warnings. we have complete coverage starting with nbc national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> matt, good morning to you. one week into his working vacation president trump is clearly in a talkative mood. yesterday when his press secretary held up a sign that said one more question the president just plowed ahead and took one after another for minutes more, defying his critics, stepping up his rhetoric against north korea and calling senate republicans failure to repeal and replace obamacare disgraceful. president trump delivering another ominous warning, doubling down on his fire and fury threat against north korea. >> if anything, maybe that statement wasn't tough enough. >> later sharpening his words for kim jong-un. >> he has disrespected our country greatly, he has said things that are horrific. >> reporter: the president's response his first comments since north korea upped the ante, threatening to strike the u.s. territory of guam. >> he does something in guam, it

which nobody has seen before what will happen in north korea. it's not a dare, it's a statement. >> reporter: late thursday defense secretary james mattis with a far different tone than the president's tough stance, arguing american diplomacy is working. >> it is gaining diplomatic results. and i want to stay right there right now. the tragedy of war is well enough known, it doesn't need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic. >> reporter: the president at his golf club in bedminster meeting the press not once but twice, unplugged and unfiltered, saying he has no plans to fire special counsel robert muler. >> i'm not dismissing anybody. i want them to get on with the task, but i also want the senate and the house to come out with their findings. i didn't win because of russia. >> reporter: on vladimir putin expelling 755 american diplomats as retribution for the latest u.s. sanctions. >> i want to thank him because we're trying to cut down on payroll. >>

property. let's look more closely at this crisis, with north korea. one of guam's top government officials is issuing a call for calm, amid north korea's threats to attack that u.s. territory. nbc's miguel almaguer is there this morning. >> reporter: here in streets and the beaches are busy at this hour. taking the threats in stride, saying there's nothing they can do but sit and wait. ballistic missiles said to be aimed 20 miles off of the sun-kissed beaches of guam could be coming in a week, according to the latest threats from north korea's military. today, after another day of fiery rhetoric -- >> maybe it wasn't tough enough. >> reporter: -- it's business as usual, on an island dependant on tourists. >> i'm not too worried about it. i'mfi

protect us. >> reporter: 20 miles offshore, where the missiles can fall, tour boat owners worry that even a threat can hurt business. they're grateful the military the nearby. nearly 7,000 u.s. service members are stationed here. the air force, navy and coast guard all have facilities on an island only 30 miles long. the stronghold is known as the tip of the spear, the most western military base on u.s. soil. also protecting the island, thaad, an incoming missile defense system, that in testing has a 100% success rate. >> our motto is ready to fight. our wing mission is to provide president trump any options and air power across all of the spectrums of the battlefield. >> reporter: this morning, it's not just guam under threat. >> i'm bill neely in seoul, where people are relieved the u.s. won't act against north korea without consulting

they shouldn't have their own nuclear weapons. there's no panic here. but they're desperate for all of the tough talk to stop. >> reporter: back in guam, there are new concerns for many who live in this u.s. territory. >> i don't know what's going to happen and i'm scared. >> reporter: there is no new warning system in place. for now, guam relying on 15 sirens like these. alerting those in low-lying areas, like beaches, they must quickly find safer ground. but if north korea launched four ballistic missiles, a threat they are examining, they could hit guam just 14 minutes. still, the governor says, no need to panic. do you sleep well at night? >> i sleep very well at night. >> reporter: this morning, a plea to stay calm. for a small island in the crosshairs of a serious global threat. with tourists hitting >> reporter: wi

some hotels including our own are testing internal paging systems inside guests rooms. they are looking for a way to notify the public in the event of an incoming threat. savannah, back to you. >> i'm sure that's unnerving. thank you. there are also new developments with the investigation into what could have caused u.s. diplomats in cuba to suddenly lose their hearing. now the canadian government is saying that some of its staff may also have been victimized by what's being called acoustic attacks. kerry sanders is in miami with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this morning there are more questions than answers in the strange case of the mysterious hearing loss among some u.s. employees at the u.s. embassy as well as others who have complained of feeling nauseous. this morning it's unclear how many staff at the u.s. embassy in havana have lost their hearing and if the damage w

this came from. okay? we can't blame any one individual or country at this point yet. an investigation is under way. we take that seriously. >> reporter: former spies and intelligence officers says it sounds like a use of cold war technology. sound waves that can cause people to lose their balance and feel ill. >> this sounds like something where our diplomats inside cuba were being harassed by cuban intelligence and the technology just got out of their hands a little bit. or the intent was not necessarily to harm american diplomats, it was to make them feel uncomfortable, to feel nauseous, to feel dizzy. >> reporter: on state run tv the cuban government announcing it is not responsible and is also now investigating. how is it someone might be targeted, but not hear the attack? >> if you can hear this tone raise your hand. >> reporter: by age 10 we

its path. matt. >> as you said, a lot more questions than answers right now. kerry, thank you very much. >> a lot more to get to this morning including new orleans under a state of emergency this morning, the city's water pumping system is malfunctioning. with more rain in the forecast officials say some neighborhoods are at risk of serious flooding. new orleans is still recovering from last weekend's heavy rains. the city has only one working turbine which provides pa you are to drainage pumps. so schools are closed today as a precaution. there will be more testimony today in the criminal case tied to the alleged hazing death of a fraternity pledge at penn state university. this follows a stunning development on thursday when a detective suggested someone intentionally erased key surveillance video from the night in question. kristen dahlgren is at the courthouse. >> reporter: good morning. an attorney for the piazza

up and additional charges could come soon for one of the defendants expected any minute here for today's hearing. on day four of the hearing a shocker, a detective claiming the surveillance system from the basement of the fraternity previously characterized as malfunctioning was intentionally destroyed two days after timothy piazza's death. on the stand the detective was asked what happened to the footage in the basement responding it appears to have been deleted, adding the unidentified suspect is one of the defendants already in the courtroom. the fbi is now analyzing the security system. >> the big question becomes what could be so bad on it that it needed to be deleted versus the video we've seen which naturally was pretty horrible. >> reporter: video from other cameras on the first floor of the house has been the crux of the prosecution's case, alleging fraternity brothers forced 19-year-old pledge

ignored his injuries after he fell down the stairs into the basement. >> it's a game changer if we see on the videotape the kinds of things that we see in the first floor, we'll know what happened to tim piazza. we will know what happened during the second fall. >> charges for 18 fraternity brothers range from involuntary manslaughter to evidence tampering. in a case spotlighting the darker side of greek life. penn state is conducting its own investigation and has already announced reforms to the greek system. the contentious preliminary hearing entering its fifth day. the defendants at the hearing have decide all charges, the defense attorneys argue any new footage would show nothing more than a tragic accident. >> i'm not really concerned because i suspect that it will just show young people have a party. so this morning four more defense attorneys get to cross-examine that detective if

and savannah, the judge will rule on whether or not this will go to a full trial. >> kristen, thank you very much. there is new fallout connected to that controversial memo questioning google's diversity efforts. the tech giant was set to hold a companywide meeting to discuss gender discrimination but it was canceled at the very last minute. jo ling kent is here and you have a lot more this morning. >> reporter: this was a sudden change just minutes before it was scheduled to start the ceo of google sundar pichai canceled an all hands meeting citing the safety of employees. the meeting was scheduled to address the controversy around an internal memo written by james d'amore who said that women are underrepresented in tech due to biological differences and diversity is bad for business. he was fired earlier this week for violating the code of conduct and advancing harmful gender stereotypes. he has filed a

google now. since then some alt-right groups have named individual employees on social media and various websites threatening to go after them. so now some google employees became concerned about openly asking questions at this town hall given that firestorm and the event was canceled. now the google ceo says he plans to hold some conversations in smaller forums to get to the bottom of this. >> jo. >> all right, thank you, jo. more on that shocking video. we showed you this at the top of the show, that near disaster at an austin, texas, parking garage when a woman's car plunged seven stories to the ground. jacob rascon has that story for us. jacob, what happened? >> reporter: good morning. the incident happened a couple weeks ago but police just released the video. it happened right behind me in this alley. police say a woman driving a bmw accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake narrowly missing another driver parked directly below in this

>> terrifying moments caught on camera. surveillance video released overnight captured a car slamming into the ground moments after falling seven stories from a parking garage last month. the vehicle narrowly missing an suv marked in an alley directly below, the suv driven by william birch. >> i take you didn't see anything coming. >> no but i had a erred it. >> the noise he heard turned out to be a bmw careening off one of the top floors of the garage, crashing into the pavement before clipping the back end of the suv. >> i was on the speakerphone with my mom at the time this happened. i said a car just landed on me, i have to go. >> reporter: the bmw came to rest on its roof. bystanders coming to the aid of the driver. >> it was a little scary. >> reporter: police believe the woman driving the bmw mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the car to break through the barriers, almost a year ago a similar incident

24-year-old man crashed through the barriers on the top level, but in that case a wife wrapped around his tire and left the suv dangling on the side of the garage. according to our affiliate after the first incident police issued a citation citing unsafe cable systems. after this second incident the owner of the garage installed plastic barriers filled with water. we're told that the driver of the bmw suffered serious injuries, but amazingly she survived. guys, back to you. >> jacob, thank you very much. seven stories is a long way to fall in a car. >> i'm glad she survived, but it sounds like dealing with some injuries. >> let's turn to al. nice to have you with us. >> nice to be had. we've got some showers and thunderstorms to talk about, especially for our friends out west, especially stretching from oklahoma all the way into the southeast. 10 million people under flash flood watches and warnings from oklahoma city all the into atlanta. heavy rain will be falling.

♪ this is a "news 4 today" news break. good morning, everybody. it's 7:26 on this friday, august 11th. i'm erika gonzalez. >> and i'm aaron gilchrist. in the news this morning seat pleasant police chief devan martin is in stable condition right now but still recovering. he was in a motorcycle crash while on patrol last night. prince george's county police say good samaritans rushed over to help him. this happened on martin luther king highway. we're told that chief martin is going to be okay. if you live in prince george's county leaders want you to watch out for signs that your soil is caving in. take a look at this 10 foot sinkhole swallowing up a woman's garden in capital heights. the county says heavy rain caused the problem and it's not responsib.

and newly released video captures the moment a south carolina police officer was shot multiple times on new year's day in 2016. officer quincy smith responding to a suspicious person call when he spotted the suspect who then refused to comply with the officer's commands. >> i'm going to tase you. take your hands out out of your pocket. take your hands out of your pocket. take your hands out of your -- shots fired. >> officer smith was shot several times, he was shot in both arms and the neck. he managed to run back to his vehicle where he could be heard giving a message to his family. >> just tell my family i love them. >> officer smith survived, he has since recovered from his wounds. the shooter was convicted this week of attempted murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. >> takes a lot of courage to keep on going

taylor swift groping trial that's getting a lot of attention the pop star took the stand thursday and she did not hold back. she described what she called a horrifying and shocking encounter with a then deejay. nbc's joe fryer is at the courthouse for us in denver. joe, good morning. denver. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. during her one hour of testimony, taylor swift repeated her intention again. saying that a deejay reached beneath her skirt when posing for a photo four years ago. on the stand, taylor swift had testimony more explicit than her music. it was a belong grab. he stayed latched on my bare expletive cheek. she said she was groped during this photo during a preconcert meet and greet. the picture was introduced into evidence this .

photo with him with his hand up my skirt. pressed on why she didn't immediately say something when the photo was taking, instead of waiting until the meet and greet was over. swift said, i couldn't have with the fans overhearing what i was saying. when mueller's attorney pointed out she could have taken a break. yes. and your client could have taken a normal photo. about 30 spectators showed up to watch her testimony. >> i have no reason not to believe her. i think she was very honest up there. seemed honest to me. >> reporter: swift never reported the allegation to police. but her rep told the station kygo. two days later, he was fired. in 2013, mueller filed a civil suit against the singer and her team, saying they cost him his career. >> we did a fair investigation into an accusation. and i don't know how you sue h

good morning to you. >> reporter: we showed you the video on thursday in this show. a woman's purse exploding as she sat in a city counscil meeting. it was a misfunctioning battery, sparking a warning. it's the same kind of battery that we use every day. this morning, why the batteries keep exploding and how to prevent it from happening to you. all seemed normal at this city council meeting in nevada tuesday night. until -- this woman's purse suddenly explodes into flames. she jumps up, throwing her purse to the ground. >> she was in shock because it happened so fast. she was on fire. her purse was on fire. and it was kind of a crazy scene. >> reporter: witnesses say the woman ran outside. her clothes, still on fire. >> here's part of her shirt that was -- i tore off her. >> reporter: the fire chief said she was only burnedn

st. james united methodist church. >> if you love music, you love kansas city. >> reporter: for daryl, the two are inseparable. he grew up here, taking pictures of all of the great high school bands during the parades. he moved to texas for two decades and returned to find many of the bands were gone. the victims of budget cuts. >> i wasn't thinking that i wanted to go to the school board and petition them to make a more robust music program. i just thought i would just roll up my sleeves and do something about it myself. some of you may have powerful minds where you can memorize music. >> reporter: daryl has a full-time job as a technical writer. in his spare time, he plays piano in churches to make money to buy instruments for his orchestra. >> over the years, i wound up with enough brass and woodwind instruments for a full brass and woodwind band. >> reporter: he has a

we've had a we've had a good show this morning, but unfortunately on a friday morning we have to end by sharing some sad news about a treasured member of the "today" family. we introduced you to eric hill more than once over the years. he was one of our production assistants and next month he would have marked his 30th year with "today," but on thursday eric lost a long battle with cancer at just 55 years of age. eric was so beloved around here. he had a long standing tradition, every year he would take his annual christmas card photo with us at the macy's thanksgiving day parade. >> we want to say that our hearts go out to eric's wife rebecca, his family and
