so this is moving towards the broad run area right around 6:17 and moving at around 6:33, right along 17. if we can zoom in here a little bit more and bring up some street names and you're seeing them, you can yell them out right now, but, again, we're seeing a tornado warning for northern county until about 6:30. you can see this is the classic hook we're going to look for and it is showing up on the radar. you have about another 25 minutes with this tornado warning. we'll stay on air the entire time and keep you safe. what can you do. if you're watching and saying this is where i live, i live right by 17. you want to go to your basement and go to interior room if you do not have a basement and if you don't have an interior room, you want to go somewhere that doesn't have a lot of windows, that's what you need to know right now. watches and warnings we have this tornado warning here. this is going to go until 6:30. for another 25 minutes i'm going to pop o
6:06 pm
you can see precipitation rates right around 2 inches per hour. heavy rain fall and as we take a look at what kind of winds we're seeing, i want to query the velocity. what we're going to look for with these tornado warnings, there's a little bit of rotation. i want to reset here and show you what we're looking at. this is a wider picture of the radar. i'm going to zoom down and this is where i'm seeing this hook. this is exactly where the tornado warning has been issued. as we zoom on here, you can see not only a bit of a hook, guys, take a look at these bright colors showing up, the burgundies and the pinks. this is a hail indicator. again, this area right here showing up on storm team 4 radar. if you're in this area but zoom down in, i suspect that there's a tornado on the ground right now around carter fun road. if you're around carters run road, excuse me, carter's run road. if you're saying i lived in that area, you need to get in doors
6:07 pm
georgetown road, just south of 66, even if you're around 66, out around the plains, around marshall area, you need to get in doors now. definitely go to your basement right now, we have a tornado warning and i'm going to pop that warning back up here on our radar. this is the tornado warning. this includes parts of 15, parts of 66, 55 under a tornado warning until 6:30. i want to add the radar on and i want to show you the classic hook shape here that's showing up. when we see this on radar that's a strong indicator that's a tornado on the ground. what i want to do, guys, i'm going to query the tornado warning and give you the latest information coming from the national weather service. they detected this at about
6:08 pm
nobody on the ground is saying, hey, i'm seeing a tornado, issue a tornado warning. what we're seeing here is the radar is picking up enough rotation to say, there could be a tornado on the ground. indicators are i'm seeing the hook sheet. we can see right here, right along 17 just south of 66. south of marshall right around the plains. i'm going to step back out here and manipulate the radar and let you know where this tornado warning is. i want to reset and show you where we are on the map. we'll take you to the home screen. you can see maryland, virginia and the district, but it's in this area right here, just north of warranting that i'm focused on right now. as we zoom in on the radar and
6:09 pm
torrential rain fall is happening. i'm going to show you the winds coming in with this tornado right now as we take a look at, again, the hook here this area right here is where we're seeing the potential tornados. this is moving towards the east southeast at about 15 miles an hour. so let me queery the time impact for you. again, if you're in the county in between marshall and the warranting area, you need to get in doors right now. not only get in doors but head to your basement and if you don't have a basement, head to an interior room, a bathroom a

walls. around the area, you're saying i know where that is or what that is. this is what you need to get inside, heading to cover right now. i want to expand this out just so we're getting everybody covered here and everyone safe. a broad run area in buck land area moving towards foster fork at about 6:15. the -- so georgetown road. beverly's mills road. riley road, carters run road. if you're hearing these roads and you live on the roads in the county along 17. there was the potential for the tornado on the ground. let me bring up the watches and warnings for you right now and i'm going to zoom out here so you can see the entire area, the area in red here under a tornado warning until 6:30. we have another 20 minutes coming up on this warning right now.
6:11 pm
we're looking at that hook there right now. okay. this is what i've been trying to get at to show you. so you can see where we're seeing the red and the green coupled right here, right next to each other. it allows us to pick up rotation. many years ago there was just radar, we added in doppler radar. what it allows us to do is see that rotation winds going away from and toward the radar. and to is south of 66 and back to the west of gainesville, this area right here where you need to be heading in doors. we have a radar indicated tornado warning, tornado warnings come from the national weather service. they'v
6:12 pm
until 6:30 in the evening and, again, when we look at the wind speeds here, the rain winds are going towards the radar, red winds are going away. you kind of start to see how you can see that rotation there. i'm going to step out the screen and add that on the radar you can see that. and i'm going to zoom out to the metro area so you can get a sense as to where this warning is moving. you can see that circle showing up on radar as well. this is indicating. this is our radar indicating we're picking up rotation here, as well. let me first take off my circle here, i'm going to zoom in here and we're going to see, okay, so this is exactly where we're looking right now. south of marshall, north of the warn ton area. i'm going to take off our storm track so you can see a lot of lightning, potential indicator of
6:13 pm
see the lightning increase. i'm not looking at this hour, but, again, we're seeing a lot of lightning in that area. starting to see, still, a little bit of classic hook shape, not as well defined as i did earlier. i do understand that our anchors have a few questions right now, guys. >> amelia, for people who are coming in on 66 and taking 17 down into their homes and may not be listening -- be hearing you, obviously, they're in the car. what -- what should they be doing. what's going to happen to them. if i'm at home waiting for someone into the car. >> wow want to give them a phone call right now. let them know they should not be traveling down 17 at all. if you can get ahold of anybody that you know that's going to be traveling down 17, i will tell them to stop their travels absolutely. if you're on 66 here and you're traveling back to the west, i think the best plan of action is going to t
6:14 pm
the road and let them know not only is there potentially a tornado on the ground, but there's very very heavy rain fall that's going to be moving in. pull over and wait this out. if we can take it back a little bit more. -- slowing down the commute. now not only are we seeing heavy rain fall. down here this potential hook area and this is why we're worried about a tornado. also, wendy, folks, hopefully you're listening to us, because we're doing live updates there letting us know exactly what's going on. again, traveling along 66 right now. you want to stay on 66 or stop your travels. you do not want to continue to travel it down along 17. let's reset here. i want to go back to exactly what we're looking at here w
6:15 pm
we're going to go back to our watches and warnings, take off the radar and clear that up. here is the latest. i want to kw-- they have not issued any updates. again, i want to reset for folks tuning in. we have a tornado warning until 6:30. this is for central faulk here. northwestern prince william county. both of these in northern virginia. this tornado warning was issued at 6:02. we got on the air as soon as we found out this tornado warning was issued. this storm is moving very slowly towards the east and i can see that the national weather service just shaved off a part of that tor they doe warning. that means they're updating this warning. let me bring up the latest bulletin from them and i want to fill you in on exactly what i'm seeing. this is minute by minute. they're saying at 6:14. so just about a minute 30 seconds ago, they're issuing a severe thunderstorm capable of producing tornado
6:16 pm
the plains. moving east at 15 miles an hour, which is what i've been saying all along. hazards not only the include the potential for tornado. again, guys, this is radar indicated rotation, not only are they saying, obviously, that we're worried about the potential for tornado, but potential for debris. the winds around the tornado that could pick up the debris and send it flying. i want to reset here and i know we have another anchor question. i want to circle this area, very quickly. this is the area i'm most concerned about. so right around 17, this is just west of the gainesville area north of 22, guys. this is that classic hook that we're looking at. i'm going to take the radar and set it back over the last 15 minutes because that's how long ago this tornado warning was issued and i'm going to loop this. but first what i want to do is go into my machine and put it on a slow loop for you so it's not going too fast.
6:17 pm
okay. so take a look at this. as we take a look at this hook. you can see it and i'm going to go back to the very first frame here. so this is the moment that the national weather service said, oh, wow, that looks like a potential tornado, with that classic hook. we then go minute by minute with our radar. and you can see this storm has pretty much kept that shape. it might have lost that hook for a moment. there you see that's where i mentioned that potential for impressive hail with the coloring here on the radar. as we continue to go through time. getting you to the latest, we're back here seeing that classic hook sign showing up on the radar. this is right around the 22 area, route 22. so i want to take you to the south, i want to erase that. i want to hone in here and if you're saying, oh, i live in this area. this is the street i live on. get to your basement now. if you don't have a basement, go to a closet, bathroom, somewhere that doesn't have windows.
6:18 pm
road, mountain view drive, general hunt town road, georgetown road. if you're hearing these roads and you live in the county, you live on these roads, you need to go to cover right now. you need to protect yourself. hunt wood drive, track branch drive, country creek lane, beverly mills road, if you're in any of these areas, old alexandria pike, stone hill drive, hillside drive, these are areas where a tornado could potentially be moving toward your house, the national weather service has issued a tornado warning that's going to go for another 12 minutes for parts of the county, this storm system is moving very slowly toward the east at 15 miles an hour, you can see -- you can google it, look it up on your phone if you're not in this area or you're in safety. the hook shape on a radar and this is the image that will come up. now, if ana

somewhere between an ef 1 or ef 2. this is not the kind of tornado we'll be hearing out in the middest that is milds wide. that sort of situation. this is a very very serious situation. wendy and aaron, what's the latest from your end. >> i'm watching this with you and ie know you're talk -- and i know you're talking about being focused on that area. but i'm wondering about the potential for forward movement with this storm, folks who are the market, gainesville, those sorts of area need to be thinking about potentially taking cover if that box might be expanded by the weather service. >> i think that's a great point to make. i will say when it comes to weather, air on the side of caution it's better to be safe than sorry. this storm has been moving slowly towards the east at 15 miles per hour. if you are just to the east of this tornado warning, i will start to make plans now, grab your phone charger, head down to
6:20 pm
it doesn't need to scarey event for the kids. head to the basement. regardless of a tornado, heavy rain fall, getting indications of impressive hail and gusty damaging wind with this storm system, as well. again, we continue to track what looks to be a pretty impressive hook echo right here on radar at 6:19 and we have a live picture that we're going to take you out to on i-66 near marshall right now. so take a look at this live image. you can see it's hard to tell how strong the winds are. but you can see high rain fall rates, enough water to collect on roads. folks have their headlights on, obviously, driving in that rain. i'm going to take you to the marshall area here right now on storm team 4 radar. so, again, first i want -- before i go there, this is catching my eye. i want to take you to this area here, so what i'm seeing right here are the bright colors showing up on radar.
6:21 pm
indicator. when i do that, this is the area and this is exactly where that hook echo is showing up. this can be an indicator of a tornado, too. georgetown road, beverly mills road. riley road. if you're in these areas again, guys, you need to get to your basement. we have another ten minutes on this tornado warning right along route 29 out near beverly mills road, market ridge boulevard. again, you see erin was asking about market. it's always bleter to play it safe than sorry. if you're out, i would also start to prepare to get into a basement -- into -- if you don't have a basement d also seeing on the radar right here. i've reset this image. i'm going to zoom out a
6:22 pm
bit. >> this severe thunderstorm warning goes until 7:00 p.m. this is going to be for east central county and west central prince william county, that digging you heard was just issued because of that severe thunderstorm warning. we're getting reports of quarter size hail, not only that, guys, but the winds, up to 70 miles per hour. so wind gusts that strong certainly can produce some damage. you can see some trees falling down, branches down. this could cause some damage to homes and vehicles. so i want to reset here and show you the radar. let me take off these severe thunderstorm warning because more importantly than the severe thunderstorm warning, i'm still tracking this tornado warning that's going to be in effect for another 8 minutes. so it's this area right here that i'm most concerned about. so i showed you the radar, i'm going to put on the hail marker. this is where we can kind of see what kind of hail
6:23 pm
at. i want to kwery potential hail. we're seeing 2-inch hail. hail that's large can certainly cause some impressive damage across the area. i want to take you back and then throw up the radar back here you can see heavy rain fall just south of 66. we have about another 7 minutes for this tornado warning. maybe for parts of the county, certainly a little bit, but it's mainly parts of the county right around the marshall and area around 29 where i'm watching for the potential of a tornado on the ground. again, i want to say, if you're just tuning in. this is a radar indicated tornado warning. what that means is radar as it sends out the beam. we can see the winds are going to or away from the radar. they're to and away, close enough together we're seeing rotation. we didn't see anybody actually report a tornado on the ground, but there was enough rotation
6:24 pm
echo that i'm starting to see fall apart but not necessarily, the hail marker right there in that same location. even if there is not a tornado on the ground, though, this is intent. so i understand you guys have another question. >> if peep are shopping to do their shopping along the way, they may not know about this, you know, you're thinking of the grocery stores with a lot of glass out
6:25 pm
>> what do you need to tell them on the phone right now. >> we say this all the time. download our washington app first and foremost. we send you alerts. we let you know if you had our app you would have known that tornado warning was issued in your area, then you would know to take cover. if you do know somebody that's in a grocery store, they don't want to go to their car. you want to go to aisle somewhere interior part of the store. at least you're in an area where we're not seeing the glass breaking. you want to get down and cover your head like this to protect your head. you want to let your loved ones know. thanks so much, also for helping me out back here. i want to give you the latest impact. moving at about 6:28. as wendy said moving at about .
6:26 pm
this tornado warning right around the road, that's the area right there, right along 29 and you can see, 15 is right here. we just had a little bit further to the south because with our bar on the bottom, it's a little difficult to see that area, exactly. this is perfect right here. >> and little bit of prince william county. it was a radar indicated tornado warning. if we can hit the home radar and go back to overall view. i want to give folks an idea of what's happening elsewhere across the area right now. you can see, this is the most impressive area of rain fall right now, traveling along
6:27 pm
we're really seeing the storm move towards the east southeast i will say, again, it's moving very slowly at about 15 miles an hour. we're starting to see heavy rain fall fill in further to the east along 66, starting to move into parts of fairfax county, moving towards fairfax city, just to the north of manasa. there ease -- there's a thorough nay doe warning, as well. this area in red, you can see south of marshall, north of warn ton and back to the west. >> see they issued a severe thunderstorm warning not extended that tor they doe warning off to the east. this severe thunderstorm warning is going to go until 7:00. for another 33 minutes. this is for parts of central prince william county central and southern parts of the county.
6:28 pm
national weather service, they have not cancelled this tornado warning. if they thought that the threat for tornado was over, they would cancel the warning. they're not going to hang on to the warning unless they think there's still potentially a tornado out there. again, i want to zoom into this area right here. i'm going to throw the radar back on. i'm also going to do something where i hit our storm tracks. this is going to let us -- the -- also continuing to notice this area of very heavy rain fall likely some hail right around here and 66, as well. let me zoom on into this area and show you exactly where thi
