news 4's derrick ward continues our coverage tonight and he's live in charlottesville with more on the mood as the city tries to heal. derrick? >> reporter: erica, it's an interesting dichotomy, you might say. we are here at fourth and water. you can see the memorial that has grown up here and this is the nexus of the grief that's being felt all over the country and perhaps even all over the world as the story spreads, but if you venture down city mall things return to a degree of normalcy. people are out enjoying themselves and walking and you come back here and you start to feel the weight of what has happened here in charlottesville. boy all appearances, a normal sunday morn at mount zion first african baptist church in charlottesville, and even terry mcauliffe says he's been here before. it's been a trying weekend for the city. >>

>> reporter: a car that plowed into a car of protesters killing one woman and injuring dozens of people may as well have driven through the hearts of most of charlottesville's residents. >> to see how folks still think and how they look at race relations and issues in 2017 is pretty sad. >> indeed, impromptu memorials at or near the scene were hallowed ground in the middle of the city prompted by the violence brought by outsiders. >> they made it clear and they came in with weapons and they came in with sticks and they had one goal, to come in here and hurt our citizens. >> and the governor had advice for the supremacist groups that converged on this city. >> they're not wanted. get out. get out as fast as you can. >> reporter: apparently, they didn't heed that advice. later in the day the group staged a press conference and that led to some more tension. >> get out! get out! >>

reports of pepper spraying and even explosions in seattle. we're working to get you more details and we're going to bring you more information as it comes into this newsroom. people in our area are standing in solidarity with charlottesville. two groups are planning vigils for tonight. they start at 7:00 at lafayette park outside the white house. people are being asked to bring signs and candles to show support for charlottesville. organizers are stressing that this is a peaceful vigil to stand up against bigotry and hate. and we learned today that the teenage girl who was the unintended target of a shooting in northeast d.c. has died. 17-year-old jamahri sydnor died yesterday afternoon. she was driving through the neighborhood when gun fire erupted. officers later arrested and charged philip carlos mcdaniel, metropolitan police detectives are looking for two o

color honda accord with a new jersey license plate. all right. this next picture, it is immediately becoming the image that represents yesterday's events in charlottesville. brian kelly, a photographer for "the charlottesville daily progress" took the photo, today's wash wington post, featured the photograph prominently on their front pages. we sent one of our photographers dune to the newseum and we saw the photo was also featured on today's front pages in cities all across the country from los angeles, orlando, miami, chicago, new orleans, boston, minneapolis, st. louis, charlotte, cleveland and dallas and many, many more. but we highlighted those cities because each has dealt with tragedies like the one yesterday in charlottesville. tragedies involving hate, racial prejudice, mass

men of color. republican senator john mccain sent out a statement last night that bears repeating. he said in part, our founders fought a revolution for the idea that all men are created equal. american patriots of all colors and creeds must come together to defy those who raise the flag of hatred and bigotry.

we are learning more about the virginia state troopers who lost their lives in a helicopter crash. virginia governor terry mcauliffe knew both of them well. the pilot was lieutenant jay cullen, 48 years old from virginia. on that helicopter with him was pilot trooper berke bates from quinton, virginia. he would have turned 41 years old today. they were monitoring the rally when their helicopter went down in a wooded area outside of charlottesville. police do not suspect foul play, and the crash is still under investigation. news 4 at 6:00 is coming right back.

street in northeast late last night. news 4's darcy spencer reports about the family member who was arrested for her murder. >> reporter: ann cook was 81 years old and she lived here in this first-floor apartment for the last 40-plus years. her friends, her neighbors simply in a state of shock today after learning that her own son derek cook has been charged with stabbing her to death here late saturday night. one thing that they say they'll remember about her most is that she would often walk in the community. >> and i used to laugh at her and say how many mouths did yons did you get on those legs? >> you would see her walking with her cane and it's just sad. >> miss cook's apartment building is expec

she and her neighbors planning to move into the new building in the fall. her neighbors are saddened she will never be able to experience that new home she was looking forward to. darcy spencer, news 4. we want to take you back live to charlottesville and jay gray who is on the ground covering breaking developments there. jay, can you set the scene for us and what's been going on around you today? >> reporter: eric a what we've seen here and we're at the site of where this all took place. a lot of tears, a lot of prayers and a lot of people obviously very emotional after what's happened and that will continue. we've seen a memorial that sprung up behind us here at the spot of the attack. it's grown throughout the day, as well and we now know the department of justice has opened a formal civil rights investigation into the situation here.

>> and -- jay, if you are still there with us, we're having a few issues trying to get that story on the air, but can i ask you just about what you're seeing around you? we know that governor mcauliffe had very strong words, the mayor of charlottesville had very strong words for the people that were in that city that were not residents of charlottesville. have you seen that city clear out or are you still noticing that there are still a lot of people that normally are not there. >> a lot of people none from the at-right side are very few and what we've seen is a lot of people here who have turned out because of what happened here and a lot of what most are calling counterprotest and it's no pla

charlottesville and they want to make sure that that voice is heard much more loudly than any other voices that may have been at play here over the weekend. they say that they're united and they'll continue to be united and that one message that what happened here can't change the city and can't change what most in the city believe in. they say this is an act of domestic terrorism and they want it prosecuted that way. at this point what we know about the suspect in this case is that he is going to likely be arraigned tomorrow on several charges including second-degree murder, while the feds continue to look into whether this was domestic terrorism and if this was a hate crime and something that will play out during what's sure to be, erica, a very long and intense investigation. >> jay gray, we appreciate you hanging with us, and jay gray live in charlottesville f

to return. how about the team? how did they look? >> well, carol, some of the guys said they, too, are ready to be coming back home, but today they had their final practice. tomorrow they have a final walk-through. very early this morning, but we -- the redskins still have three more preseason games ahead so the coaching staff will have to move their evaluation process from here in richmond and take it back to ashburn. and today's practice was the last day that fans were able to take in practice where there's a treat during one-on-ones today. wide receiver jamison crowder working his way back on the hamstring injury and you saw they were making an incredible grab over d.j. swearinger, and still signing autographs once practice was over. all of the players with sharpies in hand. they thanked the fans for their support this summer
