"early today" starts right now. >> hello. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. demonstrators gathered just feet from the white house marching, chanting and directly countering white supremacist groups who carried out the weekend's protests in charlottesville as white nationalists joined by the kkk neo-nazis and armed militia demonstrated in the streets at some point beating count counterprotests are. it ended with a deadly attack when a car rapped into a group of demonstrators and injuring up to 19 individuals and killing heather heyer. here was a video of the events and a warning, it is disturbing to watch. >> the man allegedly behind the wheel, 20-year-old james alex

apprehended by police after fleeing the scene and charged with second degree murder and due in court today. his mother claims she didn't know where he was going this weekend. >> i just knew he was going to a rally. i mean, you know, i tried to stay out of his political views. i didn't know it was white supremacists. i it had something to do with trump. >> ten of those hit have been released from the hospital, nine remain in good condition. two others, a virginia state troopers piloting a helicopter over the area were also killed when their chopper went down. no foul play is expected in that tragedy. this morning, heather heyer's mother is speaking out devastated. >> i'm really not angry. i'm very sad. i'm very, very sad. but i can't be angry because angry will make me hate and hate only leads to more hate.

heather wouldn't have wanted that either. >> as of this morning, president trump has yet to specifically call out the white supremacists, kk and neo-nazi member who's took part in the white national i didn't feel rally despite these remarks on saturday. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. it's been going on for a long time in our country. not donald trump, not barack obama, it's been going on for a long, long time. >> those choice words causing outrage with many immediately taking offense from the president's lack of specificity as he placed blame on many sides rather than calling out the white nationalists who joined the event. tell us about the political fallout from the president he's facing this morning. >> exactly. many critics are saying the president is more specific when

this than he was this weekend from the violence. now, senator lindsey graham and other republicans are saying the president needs in no uncertain terms dissuade these hate groups from supporting him. vice president mike pence claire arified the president's comments. >> president trump yesterday stated clearly that he condemns hate and violence in all of its forms. and as i made clear today and the white house made clear this morning, we -- we will not tolerate hatred and violence of groups like white supremacist, the kkk and neo-nazis, these extremist fringe groups have no place in the american debate. we condemn them in the strongest possible terms. >> the first lady came out saying on twitter they condemn all of these hate groups. they should communicate without hate in our hearts. president's own daughter,va

before police moved in. that scene of violence was followed by calm vigils head throughout the day andover night across the country. the most gut wrenching take places in charlottesville for heather heyer. that's where we find maya rodriguez. how are things on the ground this morning? >> reporter: overnight, things were very quiet. no major incidents reported. this is the intersection where 32-year-old heather heyer died after the car plowed into a crowd of people injuring 19 others. people have been leaving candles and flowers and tokens of remembrances. now, the driver of that car, 20-year-old james fields, is facing second degree murder charges. he is expected in court 10:00 a.m. this morning, via video conferencing. the first time we see him since that incident happened on saturday. now, he was in town for the unite the right rally taking place that day, that gathering of white nationalists. now, both the mayor of

of virginia have placed the blame for the violence this weekend squarely on that rally, take a listen. >> i think it's clear a terrorist attacking with a car used as a weapon our hearts are grieving right now. >> my message is hatred has got to stop. we had many individuals come to our beautiful state. a vast majority were weapons tap. >> there was supposed to be a formal larger vigil for heather heyer last night on the campus of the university of virginia. however, it was canceled shortly before it was supposed to get started. organizers received a credible threat but did not elaborate what that threat was. philip, frances. >> maya rodriguez, thank you. today, president trump will reported sign an executive order to look nook whether china should this be investigated for

intellectual property violations. the move could lead to sanctions. it appears trump is using them more as leverage to get them toe stop north korea's aggressive behavior. he spoke with china's president on saturday and the two leaders agree north korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior. kelly cobiella, what's the reap between north korea and how china is factoring inning? >> reporter: good morning. this morning general dunford is meeting with the defense minister. his top -- his countrier part in south korea and he's scheduled to meet with the south korean president later today. the president's office and the defense ministry saying that the topics of discussion will, of course, be north korea and this military alliance. we're expecting a press conference later today. of course, the south koreans will be looking for reassurances

fallout of the charlottesville violence over the weekend. he did not immediately call it out as white supremacists and white narnlists. he didn't decry the kk and neo-nazi. many believe he miss add opportunity to be more specific. the president did talk about national healing. he called on all of us to condemn the violence but he said on many sides. some interpreted that as spreading the blame and not looking at the cause of the incident as being a protest that was hosted and arranged by groups from the alt-right. the president will be under continued pressure politically will about this until he gives fuller answers or explains more carefully. in part, because some of those groups have been supporters of president trump politically. there's political pressure this week on that issue and also the continuing threat of north korea and what he may need to do or how he may try to tamp down the rhetoric to determine an outcome that keeps the u.s. and our allies safe at a time of
