it's quiet in charlottesville, virginia tonight. the man accused of murder at a white supremacist rally on saturday sits in his jail cell with no hope of getting out any time soon. >> but the nationwide reaction to what happened this weekend is coming in fast and furious. we have team coverage of the political fallout tonight and new worries about hate crimes here in our communities. let begin with leon harris at the live desk. >> president trump was greeted by thousands of protesters in new york city who were upset with how he handled the violence in charlottesville over the weekend. this is what it looked like as president trump made his way to trump tower. thousands of people chanting "shame" as the president's motorcade drove by. a group of trump supporters numbering in the dozens also there. although there

shouting there are no reports of violence. a ceo of under armour announced he is stepping down from the president's american manufacturing council saying they will promote unity and inclusion through sports. he now -- [ inaudible ] president trump -- the -- you can take a look here. look at that. that was the scene at a rally against racism in durham, north carolina. protesters pulled down a confederate statue, the group cheered and started hitting and kicking the statue as it fell to the groundre

house wants a confederate statue removed here. the "baltimore sun" reports that the monument does not belong at the state house in annapolis. we'll see what happens there. hundreds of protesters also marched in d.c. to show their discontent with the president's response to the weekend violence. they met outside the white house here and walked to the trump hotel on pennsylvania avenue. no arrests or disruptions. the protest stayed peaceful. but the peace has not been felt in parts of the greater washington area. we have learned about reported incidents of hate since the protest in charlottesville. jackie bensen has more on the incidents that have law enforcement so concerned. >> reporter: jim, events in charlottesville appear to have set off a

disturbing chain of hate-related events here in the d.c. area. sunday afternoon at the aquatic center in the capitol hill neighborhood is when a man with swastika tattoos used a variable epithet to an african-american life guards. >> they saw my gay pride flag burned. >> reporter: a woman returned home from a 24 hour shift at a local hospital to find someone ripped down and set fire to her gay pride flag. >> the police said there have been a number of incidents in the area since this weekend. >> she responded by flying the burned flag one story higher and placing this poster in her window. also sunday an incident on rollins avenue. about 2:15 p.m. a man heart a couple conversing in arabic and

made anti-muslim comments and physically assaulted the husband. in an ashburn, virginia church people gathered to pray for peace and tolerance. the attorney general was asked if the murder of heather heyer meets the standard to be propertied as an act of domestic terrorism. >> it's clear that the person, the suspect, weaponized his car and intended to do as much harm and strike as much fear as he probably could. to me, that looks like an act of terrorism. >> reporter: police are still looking for the suspect in the assault here on rollins avenue. live in rockville, jackie bensen, news 4. back to charlottesville now with new information on the suspect and the victims from saturday. we told you earlier the driver charged in this deadly crash will stay behind bars. a judge denied bond for james fiel

that fields' own mother called police on him in the past, one for threatening her with a knife. and we are hearing from another mother, heather heyer's mother. she is the woman killed in saturday's crash and tonight her mother says that fields robbed her of her child but he is not angry. >> i'm very sad. i'm very, very sad. but i can't be angry because angry will make me hate and hate only leads to more hate and there is no point to that. heather wouldn't have wanted that either. >> two virginia state troopers died in a helicopter crash responding to the violence saturday. the national transportation safety board released its initial report tonight saying there was no distress call before the crash happened. new at 11:00 tonight, a vunt nig -- violent night in the district. two shootings in the past hour

or so. that is the same neighborhood where a police officer shot a man in a third incident around 6:00 tonight. news 4's shomari stone reports from the scene. >> reporter: police are gathering evidence and processing the scene. an officer put her cruiser to make sure that museum donpeople drive up here and contaminate the crime scene. officers drove to the 2600 block of naylor road responding to a drug complaint. officers found three men in a car. one allegedly had a gun and took off running. an officer chased him. the suspect allegedly pulled out the gun and the officer was forced to fire. he hit the suspect in the thigh. medics transported the suspect to the hospital and he's going to be okay. police are questioning the other two men who were in the car. the investigation continues. in southeast d.c. i'm shomari stone, news 4.

accused of showing up drunk to help a hurt child then we're told he was attacked. news 4's mark segraves obtained cell phone video that shows part of the incident after the firefighter walked out of the child's home and ends right before the attack. >> you under the influence while doing your job, huh? >> you can hear neighbors taunting the firefighter asking whether he is drunk. tonight he is in the hospital with a broken jaw. the fire department says he is the focus of an internal investigation. it's not clear where the firefighter's partner was during all of this. we're told that the child was treated and is okay. fairfax county police are trying to find a man who kidnapped and tried to sexual assault a woman in reston. police tell us the man grabbed the woman, dragged her into some woods. the attack happened near the tall oaks shopping center on

police say the man then tried to remove the woman's clothing but suddenly left. he was seen driving off in a silver or gray hyundai with a license plate that began with the letter "v." a 5-year-old girl is the victim of a sexual assault. police say someone abducted her around 5:00 last night from tower drive near lenclair park. when she rejoined her family she reported what happened to them. detectives are working to create a sketch of the subject. they are offering a cash reward for information in this case. for information that leads to an arrest. turning to our weather tonight. and a cloudy monday to start our workweek could lead to some more showers on your tuesday. >> doug, how is tomorrow morning looking? >> some areas could see shower activity. right now, nothing going on. the radar is clear for the

korea urges the u.s. to use diplomacy to stop any war. nbc's bill nealy has the latest developments. >> reporter: the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff has been here in seoul to reassure a nervous ali, south korea, anxious it is being ignored by president trump and as an ally it is being sidelined rather than consultant. so he met with the defense minister and the president and reassured them that diplomacy and economic pressure against north korea is taking center stage right now. >> that's what we are preparing for. and that's what we're trying to have a diplomatic pressurization campaign to preclude him from enhancing his capabilities. >> reporter: north korea made its own statement and in s

>> those will be jets flying overhead and not thunder and lightning. >> we could see some of that too. we might have things that wake you up tonight. we had rain earlier today and the high temperatures only in the 70s in most locations. a very cool day and it's been like. that we have not seen 90 in ten days now. i don't see too many people complaining about that. the temperatures on the mild side. 76 degrees. winds at 3 miles an hour. and temperatures in the 60s back to the west. 70s in the d.c. metro area and chesapeake. warmest in annapolis at 79. we don't have much shower activity now. but over the next couple hours we are going to see one system moving out and another system moving on in and we may see rain develop in between the two. that's something i'm going to be watching closely here. you can see the

roanoke area making it way our way. we'll time it out in a second. take a look at hurricane gert just off the southeast coast. this frontal boundary is going the help steer gert out to sea. winds of 75 miles an hour moving to the north at 8 miles an hour. on that track it comes close to our region and moves out to sea fairly quickly. could become a category 2 storm by wednesday morning. one thing it will do is produce rip currents along the coast. that something to think about in the jersey show and delmarva and virginia and north carolina beaches. if you are going down there, have friends down there, watch out for rip currents. tonight, watch what happens here, you mention the rain and chance of thunder. at 2:00 a.m., one of the computer models is giving us a dousing of heavy rain in monday come -- montgomery county. this
