survive the crash, but unfortunately, a young girl died. aaron? >> angie, thank you. it's 4:34. right now, d.c. police are putting the pieces together after an officer-involved shooting. this happened near the 2500 block of naylor road around 6:00 last night. sources tell news 4 that officers were responding to a call and found three men in a car. one had a handgun and took off running. an officer chased him. that suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and the officer was forced to fire. the suspect was taken to the hospital where we're told he should be okay. police spoke to the other two men in that car with the suspect. the suspect's name has not yet been released. it is 4:34 now. new details in the fallout at the united medical center in southeast. last week officials ordered the hospital to stop delivering babies because of what's being called dangerous mistakes the hospital staff made with pregnant women and newborns. according to a letter

were a number of instances that led to that shutdown. the letter lays out two categories of violations. failure to comply with standards of good medical practice and failure to report a case of hiv infection. the shutdown will remain in place for 90 days or until the hospital implements its plan for obstetric and nursery services. develop this morning, fairfax county police are trying to find a man who kidnapped and then tried to sexually assault a person in res ton. this happened near the tall oaks shopping center off wheelie avenue. the man grabbed the woman and dragged her into the woods. he tried to remove the woman's clothes but suddenly left. montgomery county police are asking for your help to find this man. take a look at your tv screen. this is aaron jaler. he doesn't have his medication. his family and police are concernedbo

this morning we're learning about a bizarre crime at the university of maryland. an employee reported that two toxic substances were stolen from a lab inside the chemistry building. this happened between wednesday and thursday last week. detectives are looking at video to pinpoint the suspects. police say the substances are highly diluted and do not pose a health risk to the public. a d.c. firefighter is accused of showing up drunk to help a hurt child. we're told he was then attacked. news 4's mark segraves worked to get cell phone video. it starts after t-- owe it ends before the attack. >> doing your job. huh? >> so there you can hear neighbors taunting the firefighter on sunday asking him whether he's drunk on the job. right now, he's in the hospital with a broken jaw. the fire department

wrapping up. on scene, two people were taken into custody who apparently are young woman. not clear if they're juveniles. looking at the scene behind us or behind police at 19th and p streets southeast, perhaps you can see an investigation under way. flashlights being aimed at a home near just off of 19th street as they begin their police pursuit investigation. we know that just after 3:00 or so this morning, this began as a police pursuit involving park police. as you can see, they're still here on scene at this time. the vehicle in question, we've seen them around this morning is that pickup truck back there. we've seen heavy police attention on that vehicle. unclear if that is the vehicle involved in this at this time. now, what we're trying to sort out here is just how this all began. we do know initially it did begin as a traffic stop after 3:00 a.m. we don't know what happened in between. what brought them to this area. but, again, a

out. they were sent within hours of him making his revised comments yet it took him two days to revise his comments related to the condemnation of the hate groups there. it depends who you ask. senator mark warner from virginia says it was two days too late in terms of how he should have responded to this initially. people wanted him to stay stronger terms, specifically mentioning the hate groups like he did yesterday. >> edward, we know the richmond office of the fbi launched a civil rights investigation. what's the latest on that? >> at the moment the attorney general, jeff sessions has updated the president on where that is. they talked with the fbi about that investigation. that investigation, according to the attorney general is not just going into the person who committed the act, but also possibly expanding to the groups that created the atmosphere that allowed this act to happen. the attorney general saying he's going to vigorously go after the people and groups responsible for that attack. all right. edward lawrence on the hill

us. edward, thanks. we're learning more details about the helicopter crash that killed two virginia state troopers in charlottesville on saturday. the ntsb says the troopers did not send out a distress call before the crash. they were in the air to record video of the activities happening on the ground at the white nationalist rally. just before the crash, they moved to provide air support for the governor's motorcade. the helicopter was not equipped with a flight data recorder or a cockpit voice recorder. virginia state police officers jay cullen and berke bates were killed in that crash on saturday. >> trooper pilot bates would have turned 41 the next day. bates' father says his son was recruited by the state police from florida. he was ohm on the job a few weeks. his brother says it was his dream job. >> for us, you never expect to hear it. that was the hardest part about it. >> bates leaves bin

and 12-year-old twins. cullen also had a wife and two children. a teenager days away from starting her new life in college is being remembered this morning. she was shot in the head while she was driving on saratoga avenue in northeast last week. she died over the weekend from the bullet not intended for her. now, teachers and students at her alma mater, wilson high school, are prepared to start the new school year with heavy hearts. >> we're still a family. prayers, it's going to be hard. it's a hard thing knowing that she was on her way. she was on her way. >> she was set to attend florida a&m university. police have arrested and charged philip mcdaniel in her death. officers are still looking for two other people in connection with the shooting. 4:49 now. police are working right now to find the person who sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl in the alexandria section of

controversial videos pulling dark pranks on their children. these videos show mike and heather martin screaming and cursing at the kids. sometimes even pushing them. the couple has officially been charged with child neglect and the fredericksburg news post says that they've reached a plea deal. the child neglect charges carry a maximum of five years in prison and $5,000 fine. the plea hearing is set for september 11th. in frederick county, maryland, the board of education is dealing with a lawsuit according to the frederick news post as well over a recently approved transgender policy for the district. the policy allows students to use the bathroom aligned with their gender identity. in the lawsuit, a 15-year-old girl says her right to privacy is being violated. they say it's too early in the process to comment on the lawsu. you can say cheers to this new study on alcohol. ch l
