lawson muse. >> i'm leon harris. let's go right now to mark seagraves. he's live and he's got details on the investigation and clean up effort. mark, what's the latest. >> reporter: we're looking at the front side of the lincoln memorial that most people are use to seeing where this graffiti happened is on the backside that overlooks the virginia and the patomic river, what the park service is telling us this happened about 4:30 this morning is this is when this was first reported. it's red spray paint on marble column. you can see that one expletive word is spray painted down the column and at the obama it appears to say the word "law." l-a-w. we can tell you that this is actually the second time in the past six months that this memorial here has been defaced. you'll recall in february soon

marker also wrote on the lincoln memorial. we talked to the park service this afternoon about what this means to visitors and what this means to our country. here is what a spokesperson had to tell us. >> it's frustrating not only for the park service but certainly for the visitors to come here. that anyone would vandalize any of our iconic memorials, but especially the lincoln memorial. with everything that's going on now and, you know, the calls for unity and people to come together and, you know, to go to the site of the memorial to abraham lincoln and do that, that's especially disappointing. >> i can tell you that that sentiment is reverberating through all the people that are here visiting today. now, the person that did the vandalism back in february was never arrested. police have now opened an invest into this one, as far as how they're going to get this paint off, that is a time consuming process that could take weeks because of theel

of the marble in the columns here. we're live at the lincoln memorial, mark, news 4. a controversial statute on the maryland state house grounds may not be up much longer. governor larry hogan said he wants the statute of supreme court justice roger removed immediately. tracee wilkins is in annapolis tonight. she's got the response from the governor and others who want that statute taken down. tracee, what are you hearing. >> reporter: well, leon, a lot of people may not know where this statute is located. let me show you, it's here over my left shoulder, you can see how it's positioned in front of the maryland state house. it has been here since 1872. as you said, the governor just said in a statement released a little more than an hour ago it's time for this statute to come down. this is what governor larry hogan wrote. the time has come to make clear the difference between properly acknowledging our past and glorifying the

of our history. i believe removing the justice statute from the state house grounds is the right thing to do. we will ask the state house trust to take that action immediately. as of 1857 that decision was made, he was an insulated african-american who was suing for his freedom, the freedom of his wife and his two daughters. roger wrote in his decision, he was the first, by the way, maryland supreme court justice and the only supreme court justice for, roger taney wrote that african-americans were not citizens did not have rights and therefore had no constitutional rights under the law and no right to sue. a statute in his honor was erected in 1872 here, again, in front of the maryland state house. here now from former maryland delegate and chair of the prince georges county delegation, joe lean ivy who have fought since 2007 to see this statute come down. >> tar

voted to put that statute up and they said that it was going to affirm what he had done as a supreme court justice. now, this was a controversial decision even back then, not everybody was on board even back then. >> this statute belongs in a museum, not in a place of honor on the lawn. there's a very significant difference between putting something in the history where it can be explained and putting in a place where it sends an implicit message that this is someone that we as a state hon thorough. >> reporter: the last person you heard from there is pat murray. he started a petition this weekend after what happened in charlottesville calling again for the taney statute to come down. he told us in that second interview shortly after that one that he believes the governor's decision is coming a bit late, that he wished the governor would have made this decision much sooner. he tho

i'm chris lawrence here at the live desk with some breaking news. president donald trump just stepped away from the podium. he was giving a talk on infrastructure, and then, out of the blue, he started taking questions, something he said he was not going to do. he started taking questions and you can imagine the first things people asked about was his response to what happened down in charlottesville. he -- in this case, he veered widely from where he was just a day ago and now says, there is blame on both sides. take a listen. all right i'm told we don't have the tape just yet, i can tell you, basically, he was being asked about the character, knee owe -- knee owe na --

he gave name to them and said they're thugs about them, in this case, he seemed to say, look, there were bad people on both sides. there was one group that was very bad. there was another group, that he called very violent and he seemed to make some equivocation between those two groups. we got the tape in. i want you to hear what he said. >> define alt-right to me, you define it. >> define them as the same group. >> what about the alt-left that came charging at -- as you say, the alt-right, do they have any semblance of guilt? >> let me ask you this, what about the fact they -- that they came charging with clubs in

i'm not finished. i'm not finished. that was a horrible day -- i will tell you something, i watched those very closely, much more closely than you people watched it, and you have -- you had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was, also, very violent. and nobody wants to say that. but i'll say it right now. you had a group -- >> so, again, he was sort of reverting back to his original argument in the wake of what happened out in charlottesville, which was the original quote about many sides, many sides. that there were two sides to this. mr. trump says, he was slow to condemn the hate groups because he didn't know all the facts. and today he said a lot of those facts still are not known. so, again, this is what seemed to be sort of subsiding in the

thousands of forces that would be under his command. south korea was talking about there. and keep in mind this was a press conference on the national days. this was largely domestic audience that he was targeting. what he was talking about that there would not be any kind of, in his opinion, offensive target struck by the u.s. without the south korean's involvement. pat. >> national security coordinator. thank you for joining us. >> thank you. let's talk about if weather here. just gray and yucky and give us something to small about. >> we'll look at it. >> so i come in here and i think -- well i i think i've got got them all fixed. so now -- >> what's the weather? >> do you guys see my computer, you don't see them at all. something -- it's like the gremlins in there. let me see, take an outside shot and see if i can do this, here.

it has been cool but it's been warm and muggy, that's why we'll continue to see a couple of light showers throughout the evening. tomorrow, getting up and doing some running, 83 degrees warm and humid. 89 degrees at 6:00 in the afternoon. so it's going to be a hot and humid day and a hot and humid couple of days. look at the 90s starting through the day on tuesday, the most important, we've got some storms here. but monday, the day of the eclipse that amelia draper and i have been taking a look. amelia, monday right now, looks pretty good. >> yeah, thankfully in our area here, we're talking about mostly sunny skies, summer hot and humid out there with high temperature around 91 degrees, that's what you can expect weather wise for the eclipse. what can you expect with the eclipse. take a look here, the eclipse in our area begins at 1:17 and the maximum eclipse will happen around 2:42 during the afternoon. at that point we'll have about 82% totality.
