charlottesville this past weekend, it still reverb rates even in d.c. tonight some local folks with ties to that city took to the streets all in the name of peace. as the sun was setting over the nation's capital, hundreds gathered at the jefferson memorial to embark upon a walk among the monuments. a short trek they hope would go a long way toward healing and understanding in charlottesville. >> we're coming together just to kind of process what all happened this weekend, stand together as a community. >> reporter: most were alumni from uva in the d.c. area troubled by what happened over a hundred miles south of here this weekend. working together to bind those wounds together. >> to bring love where there is hatred peace where there is discord. >> reporter: hours before the rally and march, the president was facing criticism once again for his rhetorical response to what happened in charlottesville. those alt-right and those opposed them were equally culpable about the violence. a f

wife will attend a memorial service starting tomorrow. a me marchial service for hel heather heyer will happen tomorrow. funerals for two virginia state troopers will also happen this week. their helicopter crashed while they were monitoring the weekend protest. it's still not clear what caused that crash. pilot lieutenant jay cull en will be laid to rest saturday in kmes tchester field, virgini. bates grew up in prince william county. today his brother told news 4 that trooper bates fell in love with flying when he was just 10 years old. >> the first lawsuits were filed today against the man who organized saturday's deadly protest and the man charged with running over and killing heather heyer. two women involved in that suit were right in the middle of the chaos. >> just by seeing somebody that much to the car, it brought me back to somebody

trying to kill us. god really saved us. >> the $3 million lawsuit names the suspect james alex fields and jason kessler who was the organizer behind saturday's unite the right rally. >> university of virginia officials are working to ease concerns for returning students and parents. many students were among those protesting against white nationalists this weekend. in a letter home to parents, the uva vice-president promised that the university is committed to security. one student tells news 4 outsiders have already tarnished the upcoming school year. >> it is disappointing because it does shed a bad light on uva at times. i feel like that's not fair. it's not the community itself. it is also not the charlottesville community. i think it's people coming in that are hateful. >> most uva students will return to campus this friday and saturday. >> turning to the weather now, and it is thick out there tonight, folks. a dense fog advisory just issued for parts of our

the last few minutes. >> so, doug, we want know how is that going to affect our commute tomorrow morning? >> i think it will affect the commute in some of the suburbs out there especially parts of virginia and maryland. west of i-95, high humidity across the region. we're talking about areas around frederick county, montgomery county, fairfax county, prince william county, points west. visibility less than a quarter mile advisory going through 9:00. visibility now down to a quarter mile around warren ton, cull pepper, half a mile, gaithersburg wasn't a half mile. expect morning fog for sure. that is something we're going to be watching for. and extremely hot and sticky for the rest of the week. when you get back to the 90s and watching for a chance of dense or rather strong storms later this week, i'll break that down for you. i'll show you when the storm is due in and the latest on the eclipse forecast as well. >> all right, doug, thank you. families in a fairfax county

frightened to let their children play outside. a man who tell us detectives say look like this man abdulkted and assaulted a five-year-old girl on the property this weekend. news 4 jackie ben son talked to neighbors tonight in mt. vernon. >> this is a picture we wanted to show you. we're looking for anyone who has information. his description is here. >> reporter: the sketch of the suspect distributed by police was created with details that investigators gently drew from the only witness to the crime. the victim, a frightened 5-year-old girl. >> because we believe this is a stranger abduction, sexual assault, we're trying to get the face out there as much as we can and hopefully somebody saw something on sunday, recognizes this person from sunday. >> reporter: the little girl was among a group of people who were in one of the common areas of a large apartment complex just off richmond highway on sunday evening. about 5:30, someone noticed the child was missing, but a short time later she reappeared. what she told her parents alarmed them so much, they

arrests in front of the white house today, we are told protesters deliberately sat in a closed off section of pennsylvania avenue to send a message about immigration. news 4 crews saw park police give three warnings before making the arrest. at least 15 people were handcuffed, including an illinois congressman. they were calling on the trump administration to protect the deferred action for childhood arrivals program, commonly called daca. you probably heard that name

daca went into effect under president obama. it offers some protection from deportation for undocumented children who are brought to this country, usually by their parents. the so-called dreamers have to reapply for daca status. that's every two years. now, roughly 800,000 people have used it. on the campaign trail, president trump vowed to get rid of daca, but since taking office, his administration has continued issuing daca permits. now the white house is under pressure to act. attorneys general in ten states, they will take the administration to court if it doesn't get rid of daca by september 5th. last month, john kelly said the administration would not protect daca in court. he was secretary of homeland security, you will recall at the time. now, of course, he's the president's chief of staff. >> breaking news, police

investigating a homicide in upper marlboro on new acadia lane off central avenue. they went to the area at 8:30 for a welfare check. they found a person dead in the apartment complex. when we learn more information, we'll share it with you. in the meantime, the violence we saw this past weekend in charlottesville all came about after the city discussed removing a statue of confederal general robert e. lee. now we are hearing from one of lee's descend ants who actually lives here in our area. it's an interview you'll only see on news 4. robert e. lee iv is 92 years old. he said his great grandfather would be ashamed of the violence that erupted over his statue. >> in my opinion, he never would have been on the side of the terrible people that started the riot or the ku klux klan. we don't need people like that in this country. >> after the

lee became washington and lee university. his great grandson says he saw it as a time to unite as one country. >> maryland governor larry hogan joined the growing course today calling for the removal of justice roger tonney statue from the grounds. he was chief justice in the 19th century. in the famous dread scott decision, he called african americans, quote, inferior and not worthy of u.s. citizenship. in a statement, governor hogan said, quote, it's time to make a difference between acknowledging our past and glorifying the darkest chapters of our history. well, nobody likes d.c. traffic, right? but in places like washington state and oregon, it will be a mess in the coming days as we count down to that total solar eclipse. >> up to a million people are expected to visit oregon next monday to be the first in the continental u.s. to see the eclipse.

the country to buy those special eclipse-viewing glasses, and some good news for people headed to oregon, the skies are expected to be clear. good news. and, doug, you might have mentioned a time or two that you're headed to south carolina on monday to see the eclipse there. what do you think? the weather is an important factor. >> weather is a huge factor. it's only total for 2 1/2 minutes down there in south carolina. so, you get one of those large clouds that kind of comes and sits. >> that could do it. >> that would -- i would not be very happy. i would not be very happy at all. it does look like we could see clouds. we may have to shift our viewing just a little bit or shift where we're going to be going. but, you know, we're going to see it hopefully. all right. out there right now looking pretty good, although we are starting to see some fog in parts of the area. not in d.c., as a matter of fact, you can see right across the river over towards the mgm right past the airport. we've got no problems out there in the d.c. metro area. 77 degrees, winds out of the east at 3 miles an hour.

in parts of northern virginia and we're going to continue too r to sue that tomorrow morning. dense fog advisory in effect west of i-95. it goes back to the blue ridge right until 9:00 tomorrow morning. waking up tomorrow, expect to see some fog. 7:00 a.m., fog at 74 degrees. definitely 7:00 a.m. some areas like fauquier county getting the kids ready, if you're driving you might need to leave a little early. 77 by 8:00, 70 by 9:00. i think we'll start to break out of it by 9:00, 10:00 in most areas. i don't think we'll see chances of rain, fog will be the issue tomorrow. take a look what we've got here. clearing skies. that loft allows the fog to form. behind this not much going on. this is a system that came through today that brought us the heavy rain earlier. this system also is going to keep hurricane gurt out to sea. that is good news for us. it will bring rip currents along the coast. that's really about it. gurt a

85 miles an hour continuing to track towards the east, away from the coast line. now, tomorrow here's the big story, i think. after the fog, partly sunny, warm and humid. 89, but i'm going for a heat index into the low 90s. it is really going to be very warm and humid over the next p couple of days. today not a pool day. tomorrow it will be for kids not in school. 87 by 1:00. 89 by 3:00. once again warm and humid. that will last. 88 on thursday, 90 degrees friday, saturday and sunday, and take a look at friday. good chance 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms here. some of those storms could be severe so we'll be watching out for that. right now i have five days at or above 90 degrees. could be more than that, that's something we'll watch out for. on monday that is the day we have the eclipse here. make sure you use the proper eyewear and check to see. some of them have been recalled. so, make sure you have the right ones . 82% totality here in our area. the most exciting time,
