criticized for his own response to what we saw play out in charlottesville. over the weekend he took to facebook to say that he believes the nation is being threatened by bigotry and hatred on both sides, essentially echoing the sentiment of the president. tonight i sat down with him and asked him how he thinks we can bridge in racial divide in our country. secretary ben carson will be the first to admit it doesn't feel good when you're the target of hate. >> we were out of town. our house was toilet-papered, and then they had painted f trump on it as well. >> reporter: so he took to facebook to share what happened at his home in northern virginia. at about the time a neighbor put up a confederate flag to taunt him. he says in the latest incident, neighbors cleaned up the mess and he took the high road. >> that really is the message that i try to get out to people. you can't necessarily control, you know, the animosity and the hatred

can control how you react. >> reporter: i asked secretary carson about what happened in charlottesville and the pain felt by so many when white supremacists and neo-nazis held a rally that took a deadly turn. he says he believes dialogue and understanding are the solutions. >> we need to explain to people that, you know, many of the confederate monuments that were put up were put up specifically during the jim crow era, specifically during the civil rights movement to make a statement. >> reporter: a statement he says would offend people of color. so i asked him several times if he thought president trump's response to the deadly protests displayed the leadership the country needs. >> and i want to push back and say, it's not about pointing fingers, about who should have done what and when they should have done it and when they should have said it. >> reporter: but he d

crowd snaking through the streets of philadelphia tonight for the philly is charlottesville march and rally. in the birthplace of american democracy, organizers argued the city should tear down what they called white supremacist structures in the city and the state. >> virginia governor terry mcauliffe doesn't have the power to relocate confederate monuments on his own but tonight he's calling on the general assembly and local jurisdictions to act. he says it's clear after the weekend violence in charlottesville that the monuments are barriers to equality. jackie bensen is live at the appommatox statue in old town alexandria. >> reporter: doreen, we're showing you a live look at this controversial statue. he's posed with his back symbolic i turned toward the north. now for years city leaders have advocated its removal saying that really there is no longer a good place

the question was shouted at virginia governor terry mac mcauliffe as he left funeral for heather heyer. hours later the governor recommended just that, in a statement that reads in part, as we attempt to heal and learn from the tragic events in charlottesville, i encourage virginia's localities and the generalsy sem blee, which are vested with the legal authority, to take down these monuments and relocate them to museums or more appropriate settings. >> we just need to remove all signs that separate us and look for those things that are going to unite us as one america. >> reporter: many in the d.c. area are familiar with this sculpture titled appommatox in old town alexandria. it was elected in 1889 to commemorate citizens who died in the civil war. for some time the city has been working up a plan to remove to it a nearby museum. they hope the

justice. heyer's parents say it was a cause she was extremely passionate about. >> they tried to kill my child to shut her up. well, guess what? you just magnified her. this is just the beginning of heather's legacy. >> james fields is charged with second degree murder in heyer's death. he's being held without bond. breaking news tonight, a federal grand jury indicted the truck driver involved in a large human trafficking case that led to the deaths of ten people. the charges against james bradley jr. carry the possibility of the death penalty. we don't know yet if prosecutors will pursue that. at least 40 people were trapped inside the sweltering tractor trailer when it was found at a san antonio walmart parking lot last month. ten people died including frank puentes. the 19-year-old had recently graduated from jeb stuart high school in falls church, was deported

right now the fbi is asking for your help finding a 16-year-old girl, tamisha johnson is from bristol, virginia. she was last seen in springfield on august 5th nearly two weeks ago now. johnson is 5'4" with black hair, brown eyes, last seen wearing a black hoodie, black sweat pants and a tan head wrap. if you've seen her, call police. a maryland judge upholds the life sentence for a young beltway sniper, lee boyd malvo. malvo argued his life sentences should be thrown out because the u.s. supreme court ruled in 2012245 mandatory life sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional. today's ruling rejected that argument. he was 17 when he and john allen muhammad killed ten people in the d.c. area. the montgomery county states attorney addressed the case again today. >> the law has been complied with. people should have faith that justice was done

time of the sentencing. >> a federal judge has ruled that malvo is entitled to new sentencing hearings in virginia. at last check the pedestrian hit by a car this evening in silver spring remains in critical condition. chopper 4 flew over the scene after the crash here on new hampshire avenue. police had to shut down traffic and divert it on to adelphi road. the car that hit the victim stayed on the scene. next time you catch the metro, you may not need to hang up your phone. met so says it's improved the service along the blue, orange and silver lines, so today news 4 transportation reporter adam tusk put it to the test. all of adam's calls went through just fine, even in the tunnels. he did find one rider whose call dropped just after she'd made it. bottom line, if you have a plan with one of the major carriers, your call should hold the next time you're riding in that downtown corridor. >> i like the sound of that. a news 4

guard's authority when it comes to recreational boats revolves around safety equipment that's required on board and law enforcement. >> in fact, the federal regulations are very scant. there's very little enforcement. and you have trade organizations who are setting guidelines that are voluntary. >> reporter: kane is referring to the american boat and yacht council or abyc. they can pay an amount to become a member which means they can promote their products as using abyc standards. they also offer voluntary standards as well. safety experts have a big problem with this. >> the industry sets their own standards. are they really pushing the envelope? are they ensuring that the safety of their users are first and foremost or really about what's easiest and what's the bottom line? >> reporter: news 4 took our investigation on the water with

>> organizations like abyc come and they fill in the blanks where the industry and the boaters and everyone else feels they need to add more robustness to those regulations. >> reporter: john points to this. that smaller book on the left, those are your federal rules and regulations for recreational boats. the one on the right, that's the abyc's standards. but their standards are voluntary. >> the argument around voluntary is interesting because voluntary standards, how do you know they're being met and who is checking on them and are they robust enough? >> reporter: the national marine manufacturers association or nmma. but we've learned the only ones taking these boats out and actually testing them in real life situations are the manufacturers. do they have to document all of this? >> well, there's no one that requires that they do other tha
