city of charlottesville. hundreds of people took to uva's campus for a candlelight vigil against hate and violence. the violent clashes on saturday took place off campus and on city streets. after the moment of silence, folks in the crowd sang songs to come together in peace. earlier wednesday, another crowd along with family and friends honored heather heyer at a memorial service in charlottesville. heyer was killed when a man drove a car into a crowd protesting the white nationalist rally. virginia governor terry mcauliffe wants the confederate monuments in virginia gone. the governor says they're barriers to equality. but he doesn't have the power to relocate them on his own. news 4's jackie bensen is near a confederate statute in old town alexandria with more on what happens next. >> reporter: the question was

terry mcauliffe as he left funeral services for charlottesville victim heather heyer. hours later the governor recommended just that. in a statement reading in part as we attempt to heal and learn from the tragic events in charlottesville, i urge them to take down the monuments and relocate them to museums or more appropriate settings. >> we need to remove all signs that separate us and look for things that unite us as one america. >> many in the d.c. area are familiar with this sculpture titled appomattox in old town alexandria. it was erected in 1889 to commemorate citizens who died in the civil war. for some time now, the city has been working to come up with a plan to remove it to a nearby museum. those we spoke to hope the governor's request will speed up that process. >> well, i think i

several times if he thought president trump's response to the deadly protest in charlottesville displayed the leadership the country needs and he said, he doesn't want to point fingers about who should have done what. we are following some breaking news from south korea where that country's president is hoping to jump-start diplomacy with the north. the president considers he would consider sending a special envoy to begin talks in north korea. but the north would have to stop its missile and nuclear tests. he declared there would be no second war on the korean peninsula. despite the threat from north korea, it is back to school for students in guam. all 41 public schools opened for the new school year today. the territory's education superintendent says his main concern has been helping parents and teachers have conversations with students to ease any possible anxiety. last week, north korea threatened

guam. but recently backed off those threats. the truck driver involved in a large human trafficking case has been indicted by a federal grand jury. the charges against james bradley jr. carried the possibility of the death penalty. at least 39 people were trapped inside a sweltering tractor-trailer when it was found in san antonio last month. ten people died, including a 19-year-old who graduated from jeb stuart high school in falls church. he was deported and was trying to get back to his family in the united states. right now the fbi is taking the lead in the search for a missing 16-year-old girl in virginia. we showed you tomisha johnson's picture earlier this week. she was last seen august 5th. she's 5'4", black hair, brown eyes wearing a black hoodie,

a car chase in l.a. overnight we learned a man fell off a crane to his death. police say they -- the chase started when officers spotted the man driving a stolen suv. as you can see, he was driving recklessly on the shoulder of the highway. he eventually drove to the port of los angeles, climbed the crane and took off his clothes. hours into the standoff, the man fell 160 feet to his death. oh, that pitch is a little bit outside. uncomfortable for a lot of people at a park in boston. especially for that photographer. if you are wondering, he's okay. the first pitch was made by -- everybody laughing here. by a bone cancer survivor and high schooler jordan leander. he's been having fun with

talking about getting on an airplane. but there is a growing safety concern over the air we breathe inside the plane. this summer, a number of airline passengers and crew members got sick due to what experts believe are toxic fume events. nbc's stephanie gosk explains what they are and the danger they pose. >> a jetblue flight makes an emergency landing in buffalo, new york, this month. >> they're not sure what the smell is. >> this video shows firefighters on board. while he starts to feel sick. sharp headache. >> three crew members went to the hospital. jetblue says no mechanical issues were found. the incident sounds eerily similar to something american airlines pilot experienced in june. >> we immediately noticed the smell. >> the fumes came from the engine and smelled like dirty socks. >> that can
