round later this afternoon with peak heating. i think that the parade and everything for k.d. day in seat pleasant should squeeze between the rain chances. showers moving through parts of charles county and towards clone kwlal beach. they're heading towards calvert beach and st. mary's city. keep that in mind. on the broader view, not much rain anywhere else. temperatures, mid-60s in the shenandoah valley. upper 60s and low 70s in the nearby suburbs. upper 70s downtown and bayside. so as you plan it out for today, plan on temperatures in the low to mid-70s through 7:00 or 8:00 this morning. into the 80s by 11:00. a very warm and humid day. afternoon highs today upper 80s to near 90. again, rain chances come back into the picture after 3:00 or 4:00. be rainfall-ready. we'll have a check of the weekend forecast coming up. for now, it's time for jack taylor.

good morning. since we last spoke, things escalated quickly. activity on route 9 near hillsborough and sider mill road. a vehicle overturned 95 northbound near the truck scales off to the right side. the equipment is headed to the scene. there's a potential of a slowdown. 50. near kenilworth avenue, potentially near the ramp may be in that stretch. another crash reported with potentially another vehicle overturned. the roadways are not that wet in certain spots. please take it easy out there. a lot happening early. take it easy please. back to you. >> let it shine, let it shine ♪ >> since last weekend's violence, the outpouring of support has been huge for the friends and family of heather heyer and the city of charlottesville. hundreds took to the campus at uva for a vigil against hate and violence. the clashes

and on city streets on saturday. folks in the crowd sang songs to come together in peace. the violence in charlottesville has reignited the debate about what to do with confederate statues. virginia's governor says they should all be removed. >> that means statues like the one in alexandria. this one disappears soon. megan mcgrath live in old town with more on the debate. megan? >> reporter: good morning, guys. behind me you see the statue appomattox in the middle of old town alexandria. if governor mcauliffe gets his way, it will be removed and placed in a museum. the governor released a statement saying in part, monuments should serve as unifiers that inspire us collectively and vein rate for citizens. unfortunately, the monuments have become flash points for hatred, division and violence. the governor is recommendin

removed and placed in museums. in virginia, the general assembly, though, must make that final decision. the statue here in old town is titled appomattox in the middle of the street here on south street. it was erected in 1889 in the memory of confederate soldiers who died during the civil war. the city of alexandria has been working on a plan to remove the statue, but obviously it hasn't happened yet. in baltimore, the mayor has taken action there. in the wee hours of the morning. if you take a look at the video, before the sun came up on wednesday, four statues, including the lee jackson monument, were removed. all that remains at this point are the empty pedestals. back here live in alexandria, the question is will we see a similar situation here. a pedestal and no statue here on south street. remains to be seen. but certainly, that's what the governor would like to see. back to you. megan mcgrath live in alexandria this morning. six

today friends and family will start to say goodbye to the virginia state police officers killed near charlottesville. berke bates and jay cullen died after their helicopter crashed heading to patrol -- leaving the patrol of the rally over the weekend in charlottesville. a visitation for trooper bates is happening today in richmond. friends and family come together tomorrow for lieutenant cullen. his service is also being held in richmond. this comes a day after a moving memorial for heather heyer. she was killed during the protest in charlottesville when police say james fields jr. ran her over with his car. heyer's mother had powerful words for the crowd of more than a thousand people. >> find what's wrong. don't ignore it. don't look the other way. you make a point to look at it and say to yourself what, can i do to make a difference, and that's how you're going to make my child's death worth while. i'd rather have my

golly if i got to give her up, we're going to make it count. >> the service took place in charlottesville last night. leading virginia democrats and republicans were there. heather heyer was 32 years old. on the heels of the charlottesville incident, the only african-american member of president trump's cabinet found himself the target of anti-trump vandals. this is a story only on news 4. the toilet papered hud secretary's vienna home -- these vandals toilet papered his home and wrote an ex ples tiff about the president. in the past, a neighbor hung april confederate flag to taunt him. the secretary admits being the target of hate doesn't feel good but says violence is not the answer. >> you can't necessarily control the animosity and the hatred of someone else. but you can control how you react. >> we asked the secretary several times if he thoht

good morning. i'm meteorologist samarra theodore. do you know what day it is? it is #k d-day. if you're headed to the parade, it's going to start off muggy, especially early for the lineup and participating in the parade. the good news, we should be on the dry side of things. moving throughout the duration of the parade, we expect temperatures to quickly push into the low 80s. things will be heating up fairly quickly. by the end of the parade, still on the drier end of the spectrum. keep the umbrella handy, but we should be pretty quiet. again, very muggy out here. be sure to hash tag your

live desk. it was a dramatic scene that ultimately ended in tragedy. this is from l.a. a police chase with a man behind the wheel of a stolen car weaving in and out of traffic. driving erratically down the shoulder. the man eventually led authorities to the port of los angeles. climbed a crane. and ultimately, he fell 160 feet to his death. back over to you guys. erika, thank you. 5:17 now. new information on a tragic case of human smuggling out of texas. the truck driver involved in that case has been indicted by a federal grand jury. james bradley jr. could face the death penalty. at least 39 people were trapped inside a sweltering tractor-trailer when it was found in san antonio last month. ten people died including the young man here, 19-year-old frank fuentes. he recently graduated from jeb stuart high school in falls church. he was deported and trying to get back to his family in the u.s. when he

kenilworth had been closed removing a vehicle overturned. in dale city, 95 northbound. the accident, activity and cleanup is on the right shoulder. tow trucks on scene and hopefully that's gone before you hit the road. nothing left to look at by the time you get out there. aaron and eun, back to you. >> now to our top stories this morning. funeral services begin for the virginia state police officers killed near charlottesville. trooper pilot berke bates and lieutenant jay cullen died after their helicopter crashed last saturday. a visitation for trooper bates is happening today in richmond. friends and family will come together tomorrow in richmond for lieutenant cullen. virginia governor terry mcauliffe says confederate statues are barriers to equality and he wants them gone. he issued a statement yesterday calling for their removal. the task of removing the statues falls on virginia's localities and the general assembly. in baltimore yesterday, mayor ordered four confederate statues removed from their pedestals. nobody hit t

this is such an incredible story. a high schooler's class project sparked a reunion seven decades in the making. >> listen to this. there's a holocaust survivor and the family who saved his life were reunited. this is a story only on news 4. tom van ruin was a boy in the netherlands when in 1945, two jewish children showed up in the middle of the night. ralph and his sister needed a place to hide from the nazis. they made room in their house. after the war ended in

they all lost touch until wednesday. the pair reunited at the holocaust memorial in d.c. this wouldn't have happened without tom's grandson helping to track them down. all part of a high school history assignment. >> i think every night he was up looking for e-mails or phone numbers, same as i. >> became your project too? >> yes. >> we were a team on this. >> yeah. >> this is awesome. both men were grateful for the reunion they had. ralph says that tom's family and their daring actions are the reason that he and his sister are alive today. >> tom says his parents never even talked about it. they just did what they thought was right. they saved lives and an incredible act of bravery and kindness. i love this is part of his school assignment and led to this kind of result. >> the sort of history lessons you can't get out of a textbook. you have living history right there available to you. really awesome story. >> great conversation coming up. >> i'm tel

the north would have to stop its missile and nuclear tests. north korea says it has detailed plans to fire four missiles at guam a u.s. territory. in an interview with the american prospect magazine, president trump's chief strategist, steve bannon says there's no military solution to a north korean nuclear threat. back over to you guys. erika, thank you. despite the threat from north korea, it's back to school for students in guam. all 41 public schools opened for the new school year today. the territory's education superintendent says his main concern has been helping parents and teachers have conversations with students to ease any possible anxiety. last week, north korea threatened to fire missiles at guam but recently backed off the threats. there is a massive search happening to find the five missing soldiers in a helicopter that crashed off the coast of hawaii. we don't know the soldiers' name

but a spokesman says they're going to come home. the helicopter crashed a few days ago. it's nighttime in hawaii right now and crews have to wait until it's light out to search the waters again. they've recovered debris from the helicopter, including part of the fuselage. it is still not clear exactly what caused that helicopter crash. yesterday, a maryland marine was laid to rest after being killed in mississippi in a military plane crash. the sergeant was buried at arlington national cemetery. he grew up in frederick and was a member of the special ops team. 16 people died in last month's crash. it's still under investigation. covering northern virginia now. the next time you stop to get cash, make sure to take a close look at the machine. five card skimming devices were found at atms at 7-eleven's across woodbridge this week. another heads up that something is wrong is if the
