charlottesville. >> the violent clashes on saturday happened off campus and on city streets. after the moment of silence last night, folks in the crowd sang songs to come together in peace. >> the violence in charlottesville has reignited the debate about what to do with confederate statues. baltimore has taken down four statues this week. we saw protesters rip down a statue in north carolina. >> now, virginia's governor says that he wants statues statewide taken down. that means statues like the one in alexandria could disappear soon. megan mcgrath, with more on the debate. megan, good morning. >> good morning. the statue that you see behind me here is entitled appomattox and it stands in the middle of south street and old town. it was erected in 1889 in memory of confederate soldiers who died during the civil war. if governor mcauliffe has his way, memorials like this would be removed and relocated. the governor released the statement saying in

and the general assembly vested with the legal authority to relocate them to museums or more appropriate settings. now in baltimore, the mayor has already taken action in the wee hours of the morning before the sun even came up on wednesday. four statues were removed, including the lee jackson monument. all that remains now are empty pedestals. there are many in virginia who would like to see that happen here. >> we just need to remove all signs that separate us. and look for those things that will unite us as one america. >> now, governor mcauliffe does not have the authority to remove the monuments. that is up to the localities and the general assembly. so the debate continues. back to you in the studio. megan mcgrath live in alexandria for us. megan, thank you. two of president trump's business councils are no more. the president decides to dissolve the cou

good morning. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist somara theodore. it's a pleasant start in seat pleasant, maryland, this morning. humidity is pretty high. we're going to see that humidity go up throughout the day. take a look at your kevin durant parade forecast. i made this one just for you. temperatures are going to be on the rise heading through the parade. lining up, we should be pretty quiet. temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. by the time the parade kicks off, we're talking low 80s. we'll be knocking on low 80s' doors. we are expecting a rain chance, but i think we'll be good during the parade timing. our full forecast, sheena, over to you. >> we're looking forward to it. keep an eye to the sky. we have showers on radar moving into parts of st. mary's county and calvert county, calvertsville seeing that rain currently. ths

where he ultimately leads authorities to. to the port of los angeles. he climbed a crane and ultimately fell 160 feet to his death. back over to you guys. erika, thank you. it's 6:17 right now. sniper malvo will stay behind bars for life. >> a judge upheld his sentence. they argued it should be thrown out because mandatory life sentences for juveniles are unconstitution unconstitutional. malvo was 17 when he and john allen mohammed killed ten people in the d.c. area. >> the law has been complied with. people should have faith that justice was done originally at the time of the trial. at the time of the sentencing. >> a sfral judge ruled that malvo is entitled to new sentencing hearings in virginia. we've been telling you about the

lieutenant jay cullen died after their helicopter crashed last saturday. a visitation for trooper bates is happening today in richmond. friends and family will come together in richmond tomorrow for lieutenant cullen. >> virginia governor terry mcauliffe says confederate statues are barriers. the task of removing statues falls on virginia localities and the general assembly. in baltimore yesterday, the mayor ordered four confederate statues removed from their pedestals. new information on a tragic case of human smuggling out of texas. the truck driver has been indicted by a federal grant jury. he could face the death penalty. at least 39 people were trapped inside a sweltering tractor-trailer when it was found in san antonio last month. ten people died, including a man who graduated from a falls church high school. 6:33 right now. new body cam video sng

tough task police officers in texas had over the weekend looking for undocumented immigrants trapped in a big rig. officers searched each truck on the lot right here. they finally heard somebody banging from inside. 17 undocumented immigrants were found. none needed medical attention. officers detained the driver. so far, no one has been charged. a maryland marine was laid to rest after being killed in a military plane crash in mississippi. the sergeant was buried at arlington national cemetery yesterday. he grew up in frederick and was a member of the marine raiders special ops team. the crash is still under investigation. we're learning more about a deadly crash in northern virginia. a woman was getting her mail when she was hit by a pickup truck earlier this week. glenda quiroz was 45 years old. she died. this happened in franconia on beulah street in fairfax county. they believe the driver of the truck had a

16 before the hour. we're seeing it all over the country. people coming together in spite of the violence that happened in charlottesville. >> saturday's events reignited the debate about what to do with confederate statues. megan mcgrath is in old town alexandria to explain why the governor says they must come down now. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, guys. if you've driven down south washington street in old town alexandria, you've seen this statue behind me here. it's entitled appomattox. it was erected in 1889 in memory of the confederate soldiers killed during the civil war. if the governor would have his way, it would be removed. that's what happened in

came up, the mayor of baltimore had four statues removed, including the lee jackson monument. all that remains are the empty pedestals. governor mcauliffe would like to see the same thing done in virginia statewide. he released a statement saying in part monuments should serve as unifiers to inspire husband collectively and vein rate our greatest citizens. the recent events in charlottesville say monuments celebrating the confederacy are flash points for hatred, division and violence. the governor would like to see them removed and relocated to either museums or other appropriate places. however, that's not his call here. that's up to the localities and the general assembly. they actually have a final authority on the matter. back to you. >> thank you, megan.

hundreds of people took to uva's campus for a vigil against hate and violence. the violent clashes on saturday took place off campus and on city streets. after the moment of silence, people in the crowd sang songs to come together in peace. earlier wednesday, another crowd along with family and friends honor heather heyer at a memorial service in charlottesville. heyer was killed when a man drove into a crowd protesting the white nationalist rally. >> this was the scene in philadelphia as hundreds of people took to the streets there in a show of solidarity. they took part in a rally called philly is charlottesville. organizers say the goal was to show support for those who pushed back gents the white nationalist rally last weekend. they also argued the city should tear down what they called white supremacist structures in the city and state. >> it's 6:46. now to a story you'll only see on news 4. on the heels of charlottesville, the only african-american member of president trump's
