we are keeping a close eye on the breaking news in barcelona. nbc news is now confirming the name of the man who allegedly rented the van in today's deadly terror attack. >> he's identified now as dress

it's not clear if he's considered an attacker. but according to officials, briefed by spanish officials, he's considered a suspect at this time. 12 people were killed and 80 others hurt after a van plowed into a tourist area. local police spokesperson says that two people have been detained now. barcelona's mayor there will be a moment of silence at noon tomorrow. they're now more united than ever. >> the only african-american member president trump's cabinet says his virginia home was recently the target of antitrump vandals. he posted about that on facebook. >> he spoke about the president's response to the violence in charlottesville. >> secretary ben carson will be the first to admit, it doesn't feel good when you're the target of hate. >> we were out of town, our house was toilet papered and then they had painted, f

>> so he took to facebook to share what happened at his home in northern virginia at about the time the neighbor put up the confederate plague to taunt him. he says -- confederate flag to taunt him. he says in the incident, he took the high road. >> that is the message that i try to get out to people. you can't necessarily control, you know, the animosity and the hatred of someone else, but you can control how you react. >> i asked secretary carson about what happened in charlottesville and the pain felt by so many when white supremacy and knee onoe-nazi he rally that took a heavy turn. we're need to explain to people that, you know, many of the confederate monuments that were put up, were put up specifically during the jim crow era, specifically during the civil rights movement to make

was not willing to critique the president in any form or fashion regardless of getting the endorsement, or the former grand wizard of the kkk, david duke. i pressed him on that. why do you think the former grand wizard thanked president trump for his response to what happened in charlottesville and he essentially said, you know, david duke has his own agenda. this is not on the president and he believes that the president would have been upset by it. in no way did he say the president should have taken different action in the way he responded to white supremacy who are endorsing him on social media, or anything else for that matter. >> can't help but think a lot of people would have like to have heard the president say he was not happy about that. >> and what's also interesting is that secretary carson did say that he felt the pain and could understand the pain of others when it comes to these confederate statutes and symbols. but, again, he said a

weather. 83 dc after some shower activity, we'll continue to watch that activity move up to the north and east. very small area of showers right in through the region. back to the west this is what i'm tracking tomorrow. it's a potent storm system. we've got a chance of severe weather today in parts of the ohio river valley. tomorrow that chance moves to the east coast so tonight. we've got a couple of them out there, most of us should see on the dry side after about 7:00, starting off tomorrow on the dry side, maybe a little bit in the way of fog tomorrow. watch this, noon, no problem. here comes that front and then we're get into thunderstorm activity, 2, 3, 4:00 in the afternoon. maybe stronger storms developing, too. all moving out after 8:00. what does that mean for us. it means by this weekend, we're looking a lot better. lower humidity on sunday and monday. it will be hot, not too

the state house trust decided to remove the statute of the roger from the grounds of the state house. upholding slavery in the dread scott case, the worst decision in u.s. history. >> it might have been par for the course at the time, he did not need to say what he did. >> they have not yet to do what the taney statute once it's removed. history professor, believes that all confederate statutes should be taken down, but not destr destroyed. >> i think there should be an effort made to put these statutes

people have told me it's damming when some of the voices applauding the positions happened to be former grand wizards of the kkk and they were telling me that they feel like this is unchartered territory. we're haven't seen a president operate in this fashion and they think it's unfortunate that he doesn't understand that his words matter, also, people reacting to the steve bannon comments that he made in a newspaper saying that the president may feel that this is politically working for him, well, they're very concerned about that. >> you know what may be a positive about this, is seeing and hearing more and more people trying to dig into why those confederate monuments were put up in the first place. >> right. right. and they're learning a lot. it's a lot of revealing information, many people feel like they're relative to civil war. they're thinking that there are things that have been in public spaces for a long time, right after the war. that's not

alarming reasons as well. i spoke to howard after the city department. on the monuments of other former presidents and leaders and the president wondering could they be taken down next. here is what the professor had to say. >> as far as i'm concerned. these statutes are not historical markers. if they don't explain what happened in this country. they were arrested at the end of reconstruction and the restoration of legal white supremacy, also known as jim crow. and they were arrested as white resistance to black and human progress during the so-called civil rights era. they were arrested as beariers to progress. >> dr. carl also said the monuments about history. they're about celebrating a way of life that he

exist again. you've got to keep in mind there are 700 confederate monuments, you put schools and roadways and alexandria. now we're talking about excessive, thousand different memorials to confederates in the civil war. >> baltimore we're saw this last week, managing to get four of the statutes there pulled down there over night. what are your listeners saying about what happened there. >> they're really happy to see this happen. mayor was acting on process that happened before she came in office. they say it's long over due. they're applauding her and saying that, you know, they know that it was motivated by what she saw in charlottesville. she stepped into action very quickly, as a matter of fact, many people may not know that she actually over saw some of those statutes willing removed in the middle of the night. she was right there when it happened. it's something that a lot of local governments around the government has struggled

deadlyiest in spain -- now it's back in 2004. 12 people died in today's attack in barcelona. it's being condemned by world leaders, including pope francis and president trump. >> the family of a student who died from an asthma attack at a gaithersburg high school is suing montgomery county public schools for $10 million. >> scott mcfarlane reports that they properly helped to save the girl. >> 14-year-old taylor died in november 2015 and a suit just filed, her mother said she suffered the asthma attack in jim class and the suit says, walton twice asked the teacher permission to leave class and retrieve her inhaler and was told no twice. the suit says the third time the girl asked, walton was asked to leave and her family alleges the girl collapsed and died soon there after and it cites the school and the teacher for wrongful death.

going to go right over the bay bridge here, that's going to be heavy rain there. i told you last hour, we're expecting to see storms developing and that's exactly what has happened here in the last half hour, we've seen a shower develop, right along connecticut avenue, some very heavy rain right now in and around, and -- now, where is the next area i'm watching. well, rockville and gaithersburg, watch out in this area, we're could see another shower develop here. now these are just showers, we're have not seen much in the way of lightning. we're not talking severe weather. it's something we'll be watching. i'm watching this reason right here in and over towards rockville for another shower to develop. now, tomorrow, a little bit of a different story. i think we're have a better chance of seeing some severe storm. noon, looking good. you can take the rain chance out at noon. a better chance at 2:00. much better chance at 3:00 and 4:00. they could be strong and possibly severe. we'll be tracking tomorrow. th

otherwise, temperatures around 88 degrees. we're could see the temperature drop. even here during the eclipse, maybe about 3 to 4 degrees. it's going to peak in our area at about 2:42. this eclipse is a great time to get your kids out and have some fun with science. talk about what's going to happen when the eclipse going on. talk about shadows during the eclipse, you can ask the kids what they're seeing and after the eclipse, talk about what they thought, what they saw with their glasses, not only that, with technology nowadays, there are plenty of options. i did some digging and came up with four ways to be a scientist, before, during and after the eclipse. >> the first and probably easiest way to make sure you have a pair of solar eclipse glasses. you want to make sure they have the right specifications so you can look safely at the sun. head to our nbc washington app and search "eclipse glasses". >> the next three ways include your smartphone and downloading a few free apps. the first app is globe observer.
