desk. erika? >> the only confirmed terror attack happened in barcelona where a van swerved down a busy pedestrian street. right now, there is a search for that driver. the van in the attack, though, was taken away. 13 people died in this. and in the town of cambrills, south of barcelona, six people were hurt. but police say they killed five suspects all wearing fake suicide belts. images of the town were trying to get into the newsroom for you this morning. isis has claimed responsibility for inspiring the attacks. it's not clear if the group had a hand in planning them. back over to you guys. all right, erika, thank you. more breaking news closer to home this time. another controversial statue taken down overnight. >> this time it was one on the statehouse grounds in annapolis. that's where justin finch is live this morning. st

we've been talking about all week. >> reporter: that's right. the roger b. tawny statue in annapolis has stood here more than a century. you can see that it's here no longer. but soon after the violence in charlottesville, maryland governor larry hogan said that that statue should come down and now, of course, it has. crews hauled away the statue close to 2:00 a.m. the removal the result of a statehouse vote held by e-mail. tawny, of course, a controversial -- a supreme court chief justice got who wrote the dred scott decision denying african-american citizens rights and upheld slavery. the statue has stood here on statehouse grounds since 1872. the tawny statue, of course, comes the same week as baltimore moved forward. there was a replica of

at this point, no word on where the statue will go in the meantime. we're live here in annapolis. i'm justin finch. news 4. back to you in the studio. >> justin, thank you. one of the virginia state police troopers killed near the violent outbreak in charlottesville will be buried today. one will be in richmond for trooper bates. cullen and bates were in a chopper that went down on saturday. bathe was from northern virginia. the funeral for lieutenant cullen will be tomorrow also in the richmond area. there was no distress call from the helicopter before it crashed. investigators are trying to figure out the cause. happening today, a major announcement from charlottesville mayor. he's expected to call for the removal of the robert e. lee statue from the downtown area. unite the night rally supports keeping the statue where it is. the mayor will call for a community meeting on h

killed when the rally turned violent. one petition calls for a heather heyer memorial to replace the robert e. lee statue. new details about a man wanted for trying to sexually assault a woman in fairfax county. police released this sketch of the man they're looking for. they say a guy who looks like this dragged a woman off the sidewalk and into the woods along north shore drive on monday afternoon. he may have gotten away in a silver or gray four-door car. anyone with information should call police. the man accused of murder along a popular d.c. bike trail is behind bars. victor williams and his dog were killed along the riverwalk trail in southeast last month. police arrested won dell roy. they haven't said whether he knew williams. the mother of a college-bound teenager is pleading for her daughter's killer to come forward. last night, hundreds gathered to remember jamahri sydnor as the family still searches for

answers. >> somebody out there knows who killed my baby. somebody knows who did it. >> a large crowd, many dressed in pink gathered at the site of the deadly shooting in northeast. jamari sidner was shot as she drove down the street in broad daylight. she was not the intended target. she died days later. jamahri made a big difference in the lives of a few of her mother's friends. >> our officer, artie earl, has been on the transplant list for a while. he received her liver yesterday. quite possibly saved his life. >> jamahri's mother is a veteran d.c. police officer. five others received life-saving donations from her. police arrested one person in the shooting. the search continues for two others. just about five minutes, almost six minutes after the hour. chopper 4 was over the scene at dulles international airport after a scare involving a suspicious white van. you see it right here.

terminal yesterday while a bomb squad robot checked that van parked outside the departure area. after searching the van, police didn't find anything suspicious inside. passengers were eventually let back into the airport. the entire incident lasted about two hours. later this morning, family and friends will say their final goodbyes to the honorable patsy tyser. she was the former mayor of alexandria from 1991 to 1996. tyser was a virginia state senator also. she passed away after complications from a fall. her funeral is happening in old town at 11:00 this morning. he is the face of the family that owns the nationals. mark lerner is recovering from surgery. he explained his illness and his absence from the front row seat in that park in a letter to the "washington post." he says complications from cancer and radiation led to the amputation of his left leg. he stresses, though, that he is cancer-free and hopes to be back in his seat one day

to miss any more games. he hasn't gone to a game since july 30th. that's a long time for him. we wish him a speedy recovery and all the best. today is one of the final days to stock up on the back to school items tax-free. >> maryland's tax-free week will wrap up tomorrow. megan mcgrath joining us from the west field wheaton mall with a look at how you can save some money. hey, megan. >> reporter: hey, guys. back to school shopping can be quite expensive, especially with more than one child. all the clothing and shoes. it can really add up. shoppers in maryland have been given a break this week. exemptions from the sales tax and the state of maryland. however, time is running out. if you still have shopping to do and you want to get a bargain here, you need to come in the next couple of days. two final days left. today through midnight on saturday. this is for qualifying purchases. they'll be exempt from maryland's 6% sales tax. there are some rules to keep in

attend a meeting on south asian policy at camp david today. yesterday he toured the panama canal at the end of the trip to latin america. he hailed the canal as a pathway to prosperity. as the solar eclipse gets closer, people are starting to get creative. many are moving to the areas with the best views, including in oregon. some even spent the night inside the portland airport, trying to figure out how to get rides to the gathering. that's an eclipse festival nearby. of course, there's a festival for this. there rbt many rental cars available. some are even taking out craigslist ads to get them. good luck. happy trails to them. if you have that kind of dedication, you belong at that festival. >> maybe spaceships will take them away after it's all said and done. crazy things happen during an eclipse. >> i guess so. just about 5:15 now. by tomorrow evening, you could ha

your four-legged and furry friends. make sure they have a shady place and a tall cold bowl of water. that goes for aaron and eun as well. 78 degrees right now in washington. there is a heat advisory that's been issued for basically the urbanized i-95 corridor here. heat indexes this afternoon could be as high as 105 degrees. really anywhere right here in and around the urban center. be on the lookout. it goes from 8:11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. here's the forecast for the heat indexes. by noon, heat index close to 100 degrees. by 4:00 in the afternoon, the heat index, 102 in annapolis, 105 washington. 102 annapolis or 102 manassas rather and 102 culpepper. that is dangerously high. take it easy today. hour by hour, mid-70s early this morning. afternoon highs doesn't look that impressive.

the atmosphere that's really going to fire up the heat indexes and bring up a pretty high risk for strong to severe storms as well. nothing on radar just yet. but we're under the slight risk for strong to severe thunderstorms. main timing on that is about 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. keep that in mind as you're planning to be out and about. here's future weather. by early this afternoon, thunderstorms bubbling up. it doesn't look that impressive on our model here. but any individual storm that bubbles up with that much heat and humidity to work with, could pack quite a punch indeed. that's the distinction settled down thereafter. beach-bound for the weekend. i thish i was. i'm driving to the carolinas to see the eclipse on monday. if you're a beachgoer, stormy weather the second half of your friday. saturday and sunday look perfect for beach-goers this weekend. here's our five-day forecast. near 90 today. again, very intense heat and humidity and strong thunderstos.

on saturday. a funeral for cullen will be tomorrow also in the richmond area. there is a new clue in the search for a man wanted for attempted sex assault. a guy who looks lick this attacked a woman on a reston sidewalk monday afternoon. he dragged her into the woods near north shore drive. she was able to get away. he's still out there. call police if he looks familiar. cleaning solutions dumped in the coffeepot at work. now a woman will go to prison for poisoning her co-workers. last week employees complained of stomach pain, vomiting and nausea. she put windex and ajax in the break room coffee to make her boss sick. she was sentenced this week to 3.5 years in prison. 5:35 now. a family with a child was frightened when a s.w.a.t. team surrounded their arlington apartment. this all happened because of a fake call. arlington county police are trying to find out who made that call yesterday morning. someone c

people hostage inside an apartment on north fort myer drive. the family inside had no idea what was going on. police spent three hours searching the rest of that building. they didn't find anything. >> we're working to find out how a 2-year-old boy was doing after being left inside a daycare van more than two hours. the mother is very angry after this happened on a field trip to the movies yesterday. the toddler goes to the new creation child development center at the new image community baptist church in southeast d.c. the mom tells police that the staff did not call 911 until they went back to the center. her son was taken to children's national hospital and was expected to be released last night. the daycare released a statement saying it was "an unfortunate situation that occurred, even with our policies in place, it has talked to staff and it's reviewing policies to make sure this doesn't happen again." only on news

14 before the hour. we're staying on top of the breaking news out of spain this morning. police now say that the five suspects killed in a police shootout south of barcelona were wearing fake bomb belts. >> they say the suspects plowed over pedestrians and police in a car attack. six people were hurt. the suspects are being linked to the terrifying van attack in barcelona that left 13 people dead. three people have already been arrested in connection to those two terror attacks. this is now a live look at cambrils where people have been laying flowers and holding a vigil. you can see so many
