another controversial statue removed in maryland. plus, get ready to say, aww. >> aww. >> we're getting you ready to help clear the shelters. good morning everyone. it's 6:00 a.m. i'm eun yang. i'm aaron gilchrist. sheena parveen out live right now as we prepare to clear the shelters in our pet adoption event at the humane rescue alliance in northwest d.c. >> she's a big dog person. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. first, we want to get you out the door with your weather and traffic. >> start with meteorologist chuck bell outside on the weather deck talking about some storms and a whole lot of heat around here, chuck. >> it is humid outside this morning. there's a hint of a southerly breeze. that's helping a bit. otherwise, a mostly cloudy sky and the atmosphere is thick with humidity. four things to know about the weather. a muggy morning leading to a stiflingly hot afternoon. heat

degrees. a chance of strong to severe storms between 3:00 and 9:00 before we get into a more pleasant weather pattern for the weekend. right now in the mid to upper 70s. there's the heat advisory along the i-95 corridor. that goes from 11:00 to 8:00. they could be as much as 105. actual air temperature topping out around 90 degrees. your chance of getting hit by a thunderstorm today, 70%. th dave dildine, good friday morning to you. >> good morning to you, chuck. decent travel conditions. but we do have a crash in centerville. it's slowing traffic beyond manassas. it's between 29 and 28. but it's just been moved to the left shoulder. you can see the flashing lights in the distance. police have it wrangled on to the left shoeld he were. they just reopened traffic. headlights heading towards centerville. maryland, new wreck reported from

between 195 and 895. initially reported in -- back to you. dave, thank you. it's 6:02. breaking news right now. more than a dozen families in mourning right now as police try to track down a terror suspect. erika gonzalez has the latest from spain now. >> we're following multiple incidents. right now the only confirmed terror attack happened in barcelona where a van swerved down a very busy pedestrian street. 13 people were killed. more than 100 people hurt. overnight the van in the attack, this video, was taken away. that wasn't the only place people had to run for their lives. about two hours south of barcelona, police say they killed five suspects wearing fake suicide belts. they say they also tried to run people over there. six people were injured.

for inspiring these attacks. but it's not clear if the group had a hand in planning them. back over to you guys. >> erika, thank you. breaking news closer to home. while you were sleeping another confederate statue was taken down. >> on the statehouse grounds in annapolis. justin finch is live on the scene. justin, we've been talking about this statue. tell us what's going on here. >> hey there, eun. good morning. it was taken down some hours ago. police were here in case the removal of that tawny statue caused reactions. now with the statue gone, the question now is what will replace it. close to 2:00 this morning, crews came in and picked up and hauled the statue away. it was here on the statehouse grounds for more than 100 years. roger b. tawny himself, a controversial figure and maryland native. he

decision. the decision was going to uphold slavery and also said that people like scott, african-americans were not due the rights of citizens. it is a decision that has linked him to confederate ideals for years. the statehouse trust oversees these grounds. they voted via e-mail to remove that statue. the tawny statue, again, stood here since 1872. the next stop based upon reports here is into storage. now, governor larry hogan did call for the removal of the tawny statue in the wake of the violence in charlottesville. again, as for right now, we're told it's held in storage as of right now as they decide what to do with that statue and also the discussion has been what to do with this spot behind us that does sit empty. what could go there. there are talks of abolitionists, like harriet

taking that spot. justin finch, news 4. back to you. we're also watching the president's reaction to all this. he will be at camp david today. so far, removing monuments like the statue is wrong. he said it's an attack on america's quote, history and culture wits being ripped apart. a lot of the remarks coming from twitter. happening today, a major announcement from charlottesville mayor. he is expected to call for the removal of the robert e. lee statue from the city's downtown area. he initially voted against removing the statue. organizers of last weekend's unite the right rally supported keeping the statue where it is. our affiliate in charlottesville is also reporting that the mayor may call for a community meeting how to honor heather heyer killed when this turned violent. >> one of the virginia state police officer killed in charlottesville will be buried today. the funeral for

berke fwaits will be held today. bates and miller were in the helicopter that went down. the funeral for lieutenant cullen will be tomorrow, also in the richmond area. there was no distress call before it crashed. investigators are trying to figure out the cause. we have breaking news in northeast washington. a pedestrian was struck and killed last night. you can look at the scene here. we're working to find out exactly what happened. specifically, we asked police whether this was a hit and run. they couldn't confirm that. it happened on kenilworth avenue near eastern avenue. we do believe the road is open right now. the mother of a college-bound teen is pleading for her daughter's killer to come forward. last night, hundreds gathered to remember jamahri sydnor as the family still searches for answers. >> somebody out there knows who killed my baby. somebody knows who did it. >> the large crowd, machine many dressed in pink gathered at the

northeast. jamahri was shot as she drove northeast in broad daylight. police say she was not the intended target. she died days later. two officers from the upper darby police department in pennsylvania were among those who came to honor her. her donated liver saved the life of their friends. >> our officer, artie earl, has been on the transplant list for a while and he received her liver yesterday. quite possibly saved his life. her mother is a d.c. police officer. five other people received life-saving organ donations from jamahri. they've arrested one person in the shooting. the search continues for two others. 6:07. new details this morning about a man wanted for trying to sexually assault a woman in fairfax county. police released this sketch of the man they're looking for right now. a guy who looks like this dragged a woman off the sidewalk and into the woods along north shorri

the man got away in a silver or four-door car. anyone with information is asked to call police. d.c. police have been able to arrest a man in the killing of another man and a dog at a popular bike trail. officers arrested roy today rather, yesterday. last month, victor williams and his dog were gunned down on the trail in southeast. roy is charged with first degree murder. no word on whether the two men knew each other. he is the face of the family that owns the nationals. mark lerner is recovering from surgery. he explained his illness in a letter to the "washington post." he said complications from cancer and radiation led to the amputation of his left leg. he stresses, though, he is canc cancer-free and hopes to return to the front row seat soon. >> he's been a great ambassador. always willing to talk to us. h

expected to rise with many more people still missing. the red cross, united nations have people working around the clock to save as many as they can. thank you. 6:15 right now. chopper 4 was over the scene after a scare involving a suspicious white van. evacuated part of the terminal while the bomb squad robot checked out the van. after searching the van, police didn't find anything suspicious. passengers were eventually let back in. the entire incident lasted about two hours. admit it. how many binge watch tv shows? is it affecting your sleep? you bet it is. researchers say it creates poor sleep quality, more fatigue and increased insomnia. that show you put on to maybe help you fall asleep maybe doing more harm than good. get rest. turn off the tv.

updated. chuck bell on the storm team 4 weather deck with a look at the forecast today. chuck? >> it's a hum dinger of a forecast and plenty of humidity in the air. all cloud and gunk iness out here. stiflingly humid weather is on the way. 78 degrees at 6:30 in the morning. feels like 81 already. afternoon highs today will be in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. you'll know the instant you walk outside, this humidity will matter quite a bit. heat indexes could be as high as 100 to 105 degrees. keep that in mind. good news about your weekend, though, after some big thunderstorms later today, tomorrow the humidity fades away. temperatures over the weekend still in the mid to upper 80s. let's go to dave dildine and check on the friday commute. >> not so good. looking at this camera shot on i-95 heading north at laurel and columbia. it will take time. look at all the brake lights. it's a crash north of

responsibility for the attacks. brand new video overnight from our nbc affiliate. wbal. the statue of roger b tawny was taken down from the maryland statehouse grounds. this is in annapolis. this happened a few hours ago, about 2:00 in the morning when this video was taken. he was a supreme court justice who wrote the dred scott decision. it upheld slavery and denied citizenship to african-americans. governor larry hogan called this, "the right thing to do." . this is days after baltimore removed four confederate statues. back to you. erika gonzalez. at 6:32, one of the virginia state police troopers killed near the violent outbreak in charlottesville will be laid to rest today. bates and lieutenant jay cullen were in a chopper that went down

cullen will be tomorrow also in the richmond area. part of the lincoln memorial will be scrubbed and power washed to remove the spray paint left behind one of the pillars. the letters m and e were also carved into that pillar. they will not be able to be removed. >> there's a new clue in the search for the man wanted for attempt sex a sult. fairfax county police say a man who looked like this attacked a woman on a sidewalk monday afternoon. dragged her into the woods near north shore drive. he's still out there. call police if he looks familiar. we're working to find out how a 2-year-old boy is doing after being left insield a daycare van in this hot weather. the mother is upset after she was on a movie to the -- the toddler goes to the new creation child development center at the new image community baptist

the mom tells news 4 that staff did not call 911 until they went back to the center. the son was taken and expected to be released tonight. the daycare says it was, quote, an unfortunate situation that occurred even with the policies in place. the daycare center has talked to staff and has talked that this doesn't happen again >> cleaning solutions dumped into the coffeepot at work. now a virginia woman will go to church for poisoning her co-workers. last year employees complained of stomach pain, vomiting and nausea. she put windex and ajax in the break room coffeepot. she wanted to make her boss sick. was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. we broke the news on midday yesterday. now we know a fire on church property in maryland was an accident. look at the scene

shoppers in maryland are getting to the next two days. a break on the sales tax. certain qualifying items will be exempt from the state's 6% sales tax. that really is quite a savings for folks out there. now not everything is exempt. the idea here is that they're trying to get folks ready for back to school. we're talking about clothing and shoes and things like that. keep that in mind when you're shopping. what exactly is exempt? take a closer look here. clothing and shoes that cost $100 or less. we're talking about each individual item. if it's more than $100, you're going to have to pay that sales tax. the first $40 will be tax-free. sales tax-free. the deal lasts from midnight on saturday. now, a lot of folks will be spending more than a hundred bucks. your overall bill might be several hundred dollars. will that be exempt? >> here's the rule of thumb. it doesn't matter the total bill

>> you probably saw this first at breaking news alert in the nbc washington app in the last few minutes we've learned that a 14th person died from the attack in barcelona, spain. it was absolutely chaos there yesterday. a street popular with tourists turned into a mass of injured and people running for their lives. more than 100 people were hurt overnight. police took a third person into custody. again, the driver is still on the run right now. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack in barcelona. several people were also hurt in the spanish town of cambrils. they have not called that an attack yet. still a developing story. back to you. >> president trump was quick to condemn the attack in spain. >> he's headed to camp david and he could be asked questions about the american response. he tweeted this. america, quote,

is necessary is to help and be tough and strong. we love you. the president was criticized how quick his response was to this compared to the violence in charlottesville last weekend. more breaking news you'll be hearing about today. another controversial statue taken down overnight. >> it's one we've been telling you about. live in annapolis with more on what happened while you were sleeping. justin, good morning. eun, good morning. this was one that governor larry hogan had been talking about removing for some time after the violence in charlottesville. just hours ago, that statue of former supreme court justice, roger b. tawny was pulled from the pedestal behind us back there. the work began quietly overnight. close to 2:00 a.m., crews hauled away that statue from the grounds here at the statehouse. roger b. tawny, of course, a former supreme court justice from maryland who was best known for offering the supreme court decision in 1857
