week. >> i know, what a week that town has lived through. they started out on a simmer, went to seething and tonight everything is solemn. so much has happened and yet there's still so much we don't know about what happens next. still up in the air tonight is the future of that robert e. lee statue in emancipation park that was such a draw for so many. charlottesville mayor says today that he wants a special session of the state legislature to debate its removal. but governor terry mcauliffe is saying that won't help out because the issue is so tied up in court because after a city vote to remove the statue earlier this year. another statue getting attention in richmond, this will not be the sight of any demonstrations any time soon. this video -- governor mcauliffe issued an executive order that temporarily bans rallies and protests there. meanwhile more charges were issued for the man police say rammed a car in counterprotesters saturday. james fields is already accused of murdering heather

now he's facing malicious wounding charges because some of the people injured were hurt seriously and permanently. and one of the troopers killed while monitoring that violence in a helicopter last week was laid to rest today. he was buried in richmond. lieutenant jay cullen's funeral is set for tomorrow. cullen was also in the chopper. the cause of the crash still unknown at this hour. we showed you the video of those torches from last friday earlier, but what we saw wednesday night this week gave such a more heartfelt feeling about what's happening. see this, a crowd of hundreds on the uva campus holding candles instead of torchers there singing songs and really showing the power of love over hate. you're struck by how one thing can send two completely conflicting messages. a flame just depends on the size. >> quite a contrast. >> absolutely, absolutely. >> thanks so much. wizards star john wall spoke about the events of the past week at

back-to-school giveaway. here was his message today for the children at rosedale community center in northeast. >> i want the kids to understand no matter what goes on, you can't use that to try to target anybody else. we're all one whole family, even though we're different races, we're still one big family. it's kind of amazing to understand that in 2017 going into 2018 we're still dealing with the same type of things that our great great grandparents dealt with and we thought we was going in a positive direction. all we can do is not use it as retaliation and try to stay positive. >> of this the fourth year for the john wall foundation's back-to-school event. we'll hear more from him coming up in sports. the strong storms that brought us lots of rain this afternoon led to a familiar problem at the cleveland park metro station this evening. check it out, flooding forced trains to bypass the station for about half an hour. and check out this picture. this guy apparently doesn't mind getting wet. it gives you an idea of just how much water was rushing down into thatta

i've got the latest eclipse forecast on monday. see you back here in a minimum. >> all right, thank you, doug. police are being tight-lipped tonight about a horrific crime that has everyone in a prince george's county community talking. >> three little girls with their whole lives ahead of them were found beaten to death inside a home. news4's jackie benson picks up our story now in clinton, maryland. >> reporter: the investigation into this horrific crime is very active at this point. police tell us it is, quote, confined to the home at this point. it was an unimaginably awful scene. three little girls, all under age 10, found murdered inside this home on quiet brook jane drive in clinton, maryland. police describe them as victims of blunt force trauma. the children were beaten to death. neighbors tell news4 about 7:30 a.m. it became clear something terrible had happened. >> i just feel very disturbed.

create child pornography will serve whatever sentence he gets in federal prison. federal prosecutors and authorities reached an agreement. they say the federal prison system has a more complete and effective program for monitoring and managing sex offenders. his sentencing on federal charges is scheduled for monday morning. more than 100 local and state charges are still pending. leon harris here back at the live desk where we're following a breaking news story coming out of orlando, florida. that's where our sister station is reporting that two officers have been shot. we want to show you video just coming into the newsroom. this is out of the town of kissimmee and you can see that police presence there is massive. the shooting occurred about 90 minutes ago. authorities are not saying how badly the officers are hurt or what they were investigating just before they were shot. but we're following this story here on the air as well as t he

out tonight. >> yes, they're dark. very dark. you can't see anything through them. so we know we need the glasses. now we want to know are the clouds going to interfere? >> i think we're going to be okay, i really do. we're going to see clouds like we normally do on a summer afternoon, but it's not going to be obscuring the sun all that much out there. today, the big story was really the thunderstorms and the heat across our region. we have not seen a whole lot of 90s in the month of august. look at today, 91 d.c., 93 dulles, 96 in warrenton, but the heat index hit 109 in d.c., 110 in leesburg, 110 down around the fredericksburg area too. it was extremely hot and that added to the fuel for the thunderstorm activity. you see the storms rumbling on through the region during the afternoon today and then really firing up southern portions of maryland. numerous thunderstorm warnings, a couple of flash flood warnings as well. now really starting to calm down. we've got a lot more rain still going on down around ocean city,

the last time was back on august 1st right after he hit his first career home run. however, that injury was on the right side of his neck. tonight scherzer attempted to give it a go in san diego, showing up to the ballpark an hour and a half early. instead, it was determined he would miss tonight's start. the stint on the disabled list is retroactive to august 15th so he can return as early as saturday, august 26th. currently scherzer leads the national league in strikeouts and is second in earned runs allowed. matt grace on the bump for his first career major league baseball start in place of mad max. came two against the padres, but it's howie kendrick starting the game off with a bang. nats take the 1-0 lead. bottom of the second, jarvis also looking to go yard but he missed the memo on michael a.

we have some breaking news just in. an arrest tonight in the tragic murder of those three little girls in prince george's county. just minutes ago police told us they have arrested 24-year-old antonio williams of clinton, maryland, for that triple homicide. now, he lives on the same street as the home where the girls were killed, but police are not telling us if he lived in that same house. officers are holdings a news conference tomorrow morning and we'll learn much more then, 11:00 a
