an exciting day for a lot of folks. we'll get to the eclipse team coverage in a minute. working for you to get you out the door this morning. >> rob stallworth is keeping an eye on your commute. but we begin with storm team 4 meteorologist sheena parveen for a look at our solar eclipse viewing weather. >> yes, good morning guys. we might have clouds starting to move in statement. i think we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds. the good news is we have storms in the forecast. but they look to hold off until after eclipse viewing time. here is a live look at the radar. passing clouds. dry as you head out for the morning commute. here's a look at the monday planner. around 75 degrees. mostly sunny by 10:00 a.m. mid-80s. by eclipse time, 2:42, it's the peak time for maximum totality. 82% coverage. i think temperatures are going to be dropping a little bit. not getting cold. it will be darker outside.

chances higher after that. coming up, a cloegser look at what you expect. a huge cooldown. rob stallworth, good morning. >> good morning, sheena. folks, i think everybody has dpon to see the eclipse in south carolina. the capitol beltway is looking pretty good all the way around through maryland and virginia. no real issues being reported on i-95 as you travel up to fredericksburg. headed toward the capitol beltway and beyond toward 395 and the 14th street bridge. one problem we do have is outbound on the clara barton parkway, report of an overturned vehicle there. i'm rob stallworth in the wtop traffic center. back to you. >> thank you. it's 5:01. we're working for you counting down to the start of the solar eclipse. people from oregon to south carolina are anticipating the first total solar eclipse that sweepd coast to

you see the path of totality there. >> you will notice changes between 1:20 and 4:00 this afternoon. we're already seeing signs popping up on the beltway, warning drivers about the impact on visibility. >> we have reporters across the country tracking this historic event. >> we begin our coverage with news 4's justin finch live at the national air and space museum. justin, good morning. tell us what's happening out there. >> hey there, eun. good morning. people have been waiting for this moment for years. we mean close to 100 of them. i'm joined by david dvorkin. he's a senior astronomy -- i notice this hat you're wearing. there is a purpose behind it, right? >> it's specially attire. i made it myself. it's for the eclipse. during the eclipse. if it's really bright outside and the sun is beating down, i get shade. the important thing is i put a bunch of holes in the shade. these are going to be litpi

in my shadow, you'll see a bunch much crescent suns. i got this idea because i was in an eclipse in 2006, my wife had a straw hat. we had hundreds and hundreds much solar eclipses with her straw hat. it was fabulous. >> speaking of the right apparel, attire for the eclipse, we're thinking a lot about the glasses. first question they want to know, do you have glasses here at the museum? >> well, yes. every morning we've been giving out glasses until we're out. there's plenty of glasses left. coming in at 10:00. but first come first serve. >> the glasses are much more than accessory. you need them today. >> absolutely. let me show you. these are very special high tech glasses. they don't look like much. they were made in the millions. but they are an interesting formulation. they let almost no light in. if i were to put my glasses on, which i love to do, i can

there. i can barely see it. when i look up at the sun, the only thing i see is a little orange ball. that's how you know it's safe. anything more than that and it's not safe. >> also, too, lots of glasses are not approved for an event like this. what can people look out for to make sure their glasses are safe for the eclipse sniept as i saisai. >> as i say, if they look like sunglasses, forget it. if you can't see a darn thing, you've got the -- i wouldn't stare -- even with these, i wouldn't stare for a long time. just for a few seconds. then you go off, do your stuff and 10, 15 minutes later, you notice that's a bigger bite. and after that, bigger bite. so from 1:17 in the afternoon today to 2:45, you're going to see the sun get nibbled away, nibbled away to 81% nibbled away. it's going to be a crescent.

students. they've been back in school for a few days now. but the remainder of the schools open today, it's a new beginning at the learning center. this was opened in 1977. they've been closed for a couple of years for a major renovation. $60 million in renovations. this is also a community center for the adams morgan community. the aquatic center has been closed for a year. that's going to reopen. they got a new playground. mayor bowser is to be here to dedicate the playground and deliver other school initiatives. a big day for the kids at marie reed learning center. i'm derrick ward. back to you. >> thank you, derrick. it's 5:08. now to breaking news we've been talking about. the navy is in the middle of a navy search and rescue operation for ten missing sailors. the john s. mccain

singapore. the navy says the ship sustained significant damage to the hull which led to flooding of several rooms. this is the second accident vog a ship from the navy's 7th fleet in the last two months. president trump is set to address the nation tonight on a new strategy for dealing with afghanistan. it this comes after a lengthy strategy reviewing looking at whether additional troops should be deployed to the country. the president will deliver the primetime address from arlington. you can watch the president's address tonight at 9:00 here on nbc4. we're all watching weather for the eclipse. but also weather for your commute this morning. the roads are dry. that's good. as we go through the afternoon, please don't try to watch the eclipse from the car and do not drive with the eclipse glasses on. you can't see anything through them. >> later on today, we'll

welcome back. it's what everyone is talking about today. we're working for you counting down to the start of the solar eclipse. it will begin at 1:17 in the afternoon. but 2% totality will -- 82% totality will be later in the afternoon. a lot of people are waiting for this coast to coast. clemson university expects as many as 100,000 sky watchers today. erika edwards will be one of them. she's live with more on the excitement that is building in south carolina. hey, erika. >> reporter: good morning aaron. yes, you're right. a lot of excitement building up here. i was walking around yesterday and everyone is talking about it. where are you going to be for the eclipse? where are you going to get your

students. that's an extra 20,000 people. they could get up to 100,000 people here on campus. number one, a lot of parents stayed to watch the eclipse. number two, when the weather turned sour, the forecast for charleston, south carolina and columbia, south carolina, a lot of people were changing their travel plans and are going to show up here today. now, things will start ramping up after lunch this afternoon. 2:37 is when totality will hit here. it will last for 2 minutes and 37 seconds. the eerie twilight. we cannot wait for it here. one of the cool things about it, no matter where you are in country, you will be able to see at least a partial solar eclipse as long as you have a good view of the sun. people are coming to the today, not talking about what divides us but what brings us together. that is the great american solar eclipse. aar aaron, eun. back to you. >> live for us in clemson, south

a man with killing those officers. new developments out of spain now. the mother of the man police believe was involved in a pair of deadly vehicle attacks wants her son to turn himself in. younes abouyaaqoub is one of the suspects who police say carried out attacks on thursday that killed 14 people and injured more than 120 in barcelona and cambrils. police have raided homes and set up roadblocks trying to find the 22-year-old suspect. new details this morning on a metrobus crash. eight passengers ended up in the hospital. we're told they'll be fine. metro says the driver was going over a steel construction plate in chinatown when the plate suddenly gave way. the driver lost control and hit several parked vehicles on h street near the capital one arena. fans have been flocking to the hollywood star for the late jerry lewis to pay tribute to the comedian. he died yesterday at 91 years old. he was well-known for his annual r

raised money for the muscular dystrophy association. however, lewis rose to fame in the 1940s alongside dean martin. next to one another on the big screen and the small screen. his family says he died of natural causes at his home in las vegas. lewis wasn't the only great we lost this weekend. dick gregory inspired millions around the country with his ability to bring change through comedy. here in d.c., so many felt like he was just one of them. i look around and i see washington, d.c., here. see it here. you don't have to -- >> that was gregory at the dedication for the new ben's chili bowl mural. he was added to the mural at the same time as our jim vance. yesterday people stopped by the mural to remember how gregory was a comedian and a civil right activist. >> just big i

ordeal today. we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds. here's a look at the eclipse viewing. again, the glasses. those are the glasses that you need. 1:17. mix of sun and clouds. 88 degrees. 2:42. again, that's going to be maximum totality time. most of the area should be dry. 85 degrees. we'll be dropping with our temperatures for a little bit and we'll start to rise back up once it's done. by the end of it, that's when the thunderstorm chances are going to be getting higher. we have storms in the forecast. the good news, they should be mostly after the eclipse time. here is satellite and radar. we're dry right now. passing clouds. if you're about to step outside, we're in the mid to low 70s. upper 630s across the area. this is future weather. go through the morning. the clouds hang around at 2:00 p.m. you see the mix of sun and clouds. we'll have clouds around out there. 5:00 p.m., a better chance of scattered thunderstorms. now, if you're heading to school, the bus stop or even around will you have time today, it will be mostly dry but

down confederate statues and monuments. protesters turned volatile and police moved in. this happened in memphis. at least 7 people were arrested. since the events in charlottesville, there have been more and more calls to take down some federal statues. they offer an idea for a replace. me mentment. missy elliott -- has more than 21,000 signatures on it. this is in portsmouth, virginia. a guy put up the petition on change.org last week. he's calling for the statute to be replaced with a monument with the grammy winner who has done work in the community and for the community. this petition calls elliott a true portsmouth native hero. >> the post reports that the star has not yet respond today a request on this petition. >> people think of her -- she's given sch

this afternoon. i think we'll see cloud around. but the good news is the thunderstorms in the forecast, they'll hold off until after 2:00 p.m. that's the good news. i'll shoal you the timing in a second. tomorrow will be a hot day. feeling like 105 degrees. annapolis, 2:43 for your eclipse time. winchester, temperatures this morning mild. but eclipse time is 2:47. fredericksburg, 2:42 as well as in the district. 91 for a high temperature. we'll see if we can rebound back to 91. once the eclipse happens, the temperatures will drop a bit. then when it ends, temperatures start to rise. if we have storms. moving in, we may be in the upper 80s. but the storm chance again mostly after 2:00 this afternoon. mid to low 730s across the area. we have passing clouds, but we are relatively dry right now. as we go through the afternoon, there you see the passing clouds. 2:30 in the afternoon. we look relatively dry.
