5:00 pm
with the storm center. >> lauren, some of us are seeing sun, but it may not stay that way. what's the latest. >> the latest right now, guys, as we're con to see these storms moving through the region. they're moving pretty slow. we're watching for possibly, even some flooding possible as we're continue into the afternoon. this is the moment we're watching right now. prince william county, even stafford county, this goes until 5:30, in an area that's outlined in here. so really running right along route 28 coming down 17. i can see amelia over there and coming out towards i-95. this storm right there producing a lot of heavy downpours, maybe a little bit of hail in this. this is our other area of severe thunderstorm warnings. this is charles county, and then also -- >> we're have a tornado warning just issued. thunderstorm actually just said, i was reading it out -- >> let's go ahead and take amelia's mike off. yeah, as amelia just said, we're
5:01 pm
right now this goes until 5:30. it goes mechanicsville, i know she's getting the radar right now. this is a tornado warning until 5:30 for that storm that was warned here -- here we're go right here. just around this area, that little hook right there. this can be signs of possibly a tornado forming. there she goes. she put it on there and that's where we were thinking. where this hook is. we're seeing strong winds in that area, just on the east side, amelia, what road is that? can you corden that for me, all the way down -- this is 234 right now. this area, if you're in this area, so, again, this is just south and east of mechanicsville in the southern maryland area, right along 234 and 236 intercepting. this is going to be the area that you are going to want to take cover right now, because we're do have a tornado warning in this area until 5:30. it is radar indicated. we're have not had a
5:02 pm
nothing, yet, but again if you're in this area that is outlined in red, from -- down to leonard town, you know that we've had a history and st. mary's county and also into charles county of having some tornadic activity. again, we're going to watch this. you've got something, go ahead. >> i want to let you know what the national weather service is saying. this was located nine miles east, at only ten miles an hour. that's something we've seen today. these storms have been slow moving, not only could we're see a tornado potentially on the ground, quarter size hail. this is one of the storms radar indicated rotation. so what that means is as the radar scanning the skies, we're seeing enough rotation that's being picked up on -- by the radar, this is virtually every tornado warning we're had this season as the radar scanning the skies. we're getting enough indication that there's rotation coming back. and when i showed you, as we're put on the radar, lauren, as you go and click velocity that's going to be in the left pallet. you can see here, so
5:03 pm
to see green moving away, red moving toward. that's where we're pick up the rotation. this is what we're seeing right here. we're seeing the red and green, that speed. once speed is going away and one speed is moving towards. you can kind of see when our radar is picking up, one speed going away thand's going to indicate potential for tornado. this is going to be for the area. this is really nice. this is what we're look for, not only am i seeing the hook, as we're go back, one of our radars was showing bright coloring, a little bit in this area, too, this is likely where we're going to see the hail. and so, again, you'll have the severe thunderstorm warning not only, but a tornado warning until 5:30 in parts of charles and saint mary's county, lauren if you want to hop back in here i'll drive the radar for you for a little bit. if you're around 234 you need to be getting to your basement right now. you need to go. if you do not have a basement, to an interior room that does hot have windows, lauren, i'm
5:04 pm
track here for you again and hone in on this area right here. >> on this area right here, again, just to the eastern side of allens. 234, 236 this area right here is really where we're going to be watching. and amelia is driving this right now. we're can see this on the radar. if you're watching us, stay inside. if you're travling, stay inside. this storm will continue to move to the east. here are some of the roads right now that we're seeing, oliver lane. old oak drive. let's see, kingston place right there, as well. i'm looking at this kind of sideways, as well. all of these areas we are going to watch to maybe get inside because this is where we're had that tornado warning, amelia. >> lauren, this is going to be for the patomic speedway. if you're in bethel church road, you live on that road. you know somebody that does you need to go to your basement right now. mechanicsville road. youne
5:05 pm
room of your house at this time. i'm going to bring back the radar on here right now, let's sense that for you and take you back and look at exactly what we're seeing on the radar. this is the activity we've been tracking all afternoon. you can see most of this is south and east of washington right now. so this is the area where we're seeing severe weather, very heavy rain fall, heavy winds, hail and now the latest coming in. we're have a tornado warning until 5:30. this is going to be for the eastern most part of charles county and the southern most part of the county and then this extends down into st. mary's county. this is going to go until 5:30. let me bring the radar back up, let's look at the storm reports, we're don't have any of those coming in just yet. bring up the radar right now, i'm going to zoom in here and show you the storm. it had that very distinct hook to it. still seeing a little bit of that on the radar right now. another tool that we're had, on the radar, when we're bring up the storm tracks, you can talk a
5:06 pm
seeing the signs of rotation. so what folks might be seeing there is a funnel cloud that can certainly come down to the ground and be a tornado on the ground. >> absolutely. that's what we're going to be watching for and again you need to be staying inside away from your windows if you're in this area south of the laplata. this entire area, again, not only could you see some tornadic activity because we're have the warning until 5:30. but also some dangerous hail. amelia is going to grab that out. bull run here in southern maryland, again, southern maryland not northern virginia at 5:21. laurel grove at 5:37. so, again, this is continuing to move to the east. amelia, how quick is it moving? >> it's pretty slow, right. >> this is moving to the east at 10 miles an hour, folks are tuning in. i think the other important thing to let them know this is radar indicated tornado warning. what this means
5:07 pm
up enough rotation to, potentially, indicate a tornado on the ground. so, again, i think the area most under the gun right now is going to be the area, lauren, as we're look at this, so, again, let me kind of -- >> let's move this up, a little. >> we've got this bug right here. we're can't see it on here, it's right where this thing, where you see tornado warning for saint mary's county. amelia was absolutely right. this was radar indicated at this point. we're have not seen anything that's touched the ground. they are pretty good with this area. maybe let's go back to that radar right now, to show you, not only are we're getting possible tornado warning, we're getting heavy rain. now we'll have to worry about flooding. if you're in this area, here is the hail outlook right here. we're have a pretty good chance of hail right along 230 from allens to -- inch in diameter. so that is pretty big hail, enough to damage your car. so, again, stay put. if you are in
5:08 pm
because, again, we're have a tornado warning for charles and st. mary's county, that goes until 5:30 this afternoon. just about another 23 minutes. we're will watch this to see if we're see any rotation and actually hits on the ground, but right now this is a radar indicated and as i've said, another thing we're will watch with these heavy downpours is also possible flooding for this area, as well. so, again, that's going to be something, turn around, don't drown. we're always say that, but a lot of these roadways, especially with the lower elevation out in southern maryland, they could, actually, become a little bit more flooding, a lot quicker. >> what i'm doing right here is looking at the radar in different ways. this is going to be the rain fall, how heavy is the rain fall in these areas, so when you see right around this area, right around the mechanicsville area as i hit query the rain fall. we're seeing rain fall rates in these areas, i will say over 2 inches an hour. you see rain fall rates
5:09 pm
approaching six inches. three inches an hour. another way, then, to look at the radar, put on the cloud top. the higher the cloud tops, the stronger the storms. so the area where you're seeing yellow is the area that's under the gun. even if the tornado is not on the ground. you need to get in doors. not only do you need to get in doors. you need to go to your basement, if you do not have a basement, you need to go into an sbeer roar room in the dr interior room in the house. we're seeing milestone, miles town and leonard town under this tornado warning right here and this goes until 5:30. >> we're know the history that these storms can have around this southern maryland area. we've had some tornados out there in the path. so, again, even if you're not in this area, if you're coming down 247 right now, all the way down to lexington park down into saint mary's county. again, this storm is in your path, you're going to want to pay attention and stay inside, ass
5:10 pm
hour. again, lots of rain. she just rolled out those rain rates up to three, possible six inches at times per hour. so here we're go, if you live in one of these areas or around those areas, stay in your house. but, again, this tornado warning goes until 5:30, we'll continue to see if they extend it as we're go through the next -- couple minutes or so, as we're get to the 5:30, because this will continue to stay pretty intense as it travels to the east and we'll see if it can rain itself out or hold on to that. radar indicated, tornado warning here in charles county and alts into saint mary's county, that goes until 5:30, right along 234. charles county coming down just to the east of allens fresh and then all the way down through leonard town area, also miles town in that pathway. 238, once you cross over the bridge and yo h
5:11 pm
wtop, right now, i will not suggest to go out in this area, please stay inside and away from windows. amelia. >> yeah, lauren, what i kindnnz with want to let folks know is we're saw just on august 11th, an ef 0 tornado touchdown right around the broad run area. so that was another time where we're had a radar-indicated tornado warning. again, that was on august 11th. so just over two weeks ago we were here tracking that tornado warning. again, lauren, we're still did have that large buck at the bottom of the screen, if we're can bring our radar up a little bit. that was a efr tornado. if this is in fact a tornado on the ground, it will be ef 0 to ef one or two, so the scale how tornados are rated is the intense scale it goes from zero being the lowest end tornado, to a five being the highest end tornado. if you think back t
5:12 pm
class, it's not a line. it doesn't grow linearly in the damage. we're have the tornado warning until 5:30. this is starting out to move out of this area, but still under the gun there, because you can see this little kind of lack of rain we're have right here. this is where the rotation is, just north of the center, so along 234. if you live in this area, you need to get in doors right now. you want to go to your basement. if you want to go to bathroom, closet. preferably somewhere that does not have windows. and what the national weather service is saying. this is what we're saw on august 11th, as well, where this is all on the ground. it's in a more rural location. what we're seeing not necessarily a lot of homes out this way, but certainly a -- still a very serious event where the radar is going out and scanning the skies, it's coming back and telling us that it's seeing winds that are strong enough going away from the beam and going toward the beam,
5:13 pm
that is starting to indicate the potential for a little bit of rotation out that way. we're seeing -- we're seeing, again, that tornado warning for parts of mainly saint mary's county and a little bit of charles county, this includes this area, this is going to go until 5:30. this is now starting to move toward the southeast but very slowly at only 10 miles an hour. and then, i think we're still had another severe thunderstorm warning, right, this is going to be further out to the west and parts of northern virginia, that's going to include parts of prince william. that severe thunderstorm warning also including parts of stafford county here is going to go until 5:30. this is slowly moving towards the east at only 10 miles an hour. what we're seeing on radar right now. you can kind of compare the storms and see how serious the one in southern maryland is as we're stay on this view right here, just notice the coloring that's showing up on the radar. so we're look at this and we're do see the greens, yellows, oranges that is moderate to
5:14 pm
and a little bit of burgundy right around 17 and parts of southern county. as we're hop on to this storm here in southern maryland, notice the difference. notice how large this area of heavy rain fall is right around the mickiechanicsville area. whenever we're see this, that's a good bet that impressive hail is also associated with this storm and that's what lauren is clearing right now. that hail area. if you hop on over, that will give us the potential size or, excuse me, to the right in the pallet, the one that's there in the black, that will let you know how large that hail is. but right around here, the potential hail for right around an inch, anywhere from about half an irvelg to an inch. let's click on the velocity in the left-hand pallet, that, again, is what we're use the doppler radar for, that's the doppler part of the radar, it's letting us know we're
5:15 pm
you kind of see that couplet right there. and then we've thrown the storm tracks,vy a very good suspicion just looking at the velocity that we're going to start to see those rotator signs come up. so what does storm tracks do, those are not issued by the national weather service. this is one of our tools that we're have here at storm team 4. this is what our computer program is looking at and it's agreeing with what the national weather service that is starting to see those signs of rotation. you can see them right in that same area as we're continue to see it under the gun right now. route 236, as well. again, notice we're still seeing those very bright colors, not only that. but a lot of lightning. we've had some great studies done in our area, parts of noah, the national weather service along with the university of maryland. what they discovered if the storm sees the lightning increase by a standard deviation of about two, a very high
5:16 pm
in that thorp. i don't have that information with me right now, but just looking at that storm and how much it's blown up, what we're seeing here indicated on the radar, the potential certainly for a tornado on the ground. but if you're just tuning in, we're have 14 minutes left with the tornado warning for parts of charles and saint mary's county, this is going to go until 5:30 in the evening. what this is, is a radar-indicated tornado warning. what that means is as the what lar -- radar beam is going out, the information that is radar national weather service, the national weather service in sterling, virginia indicating enough rotation to get tornado warning. no storm spotter has called it in, the radar is indicated that. i think there's a bet there's at least a weak tornado on the ground. i want to send it over to lauren who has new information. >> we've got that tornado warning until 5:30, they just reissued it. now it is
5:17 pm
so it started at 5:15, really, this is seven miles north of the -- of the river. southeast, 15 miles an hour, and, again, we are watching this at 4:00. it's picked up just a little bit of speed right now. but, again, please be careful. leonard town now in the line of sight for this. maddox, oakley, so these area, again, could possibly have a tornado in the region, so, again, we're continuing to watch that. i'm going to grab my phone because i know i have a radar on here and download the nbc washington app especially if you're in this area, we're live streaming on facebook, on the nbc washington facebook page. we're figuring out things as we're go. it popped up on air, so we're both gathering information. we're do know this tornado warning has moved a little bit further to the southeast.
5:18 pm
of that right now. this goes until 5:30. here is 234 right there. there is 236. this is the area, here is the hook right here. this is the area where we're could possibly have a tornado. again, radar indicated, we're have not gotten anything that says there is a tornado on this ground, at this point. amelia, there we're go. we're might have to read that. you might be able to see it, either, it's small. let us do the driving for you. this right here, these are the areas, we're getting down to street level of your neighborhood and telling you where to go. we're want everybody to be safe. stay inside away from windows, again, this is a very serious situation when we're get these tornado warnings not only everywhere around here, but also to the southern maryland area, not only are we're watching for tornado warnings, we're watching for flooding, possible. this will be the region where we'll continue to see, ss
5:19 pm
lots of lightning. this is moving to the southeast at 10 miles per hour. lit continue to move down towards leonard town, come down towards lexington parks and then, eventually, out to the eastern shore. but this will -- continue to watch if you're in california right now, you're seeing a little bit of rain. lexington park you're not seeing any rain right now, but it's doing to continue to move to the south and east. >> we're always want to look to the south and east, you've been under the gun, miles town, as well. areas like lexington park, california, maryland, are not under a severe thunderstorm watch nor are they under tornado warning. you'll see extremely heavy rain fall moving into the area and potential for severe weather, as well. i'm going to widen out the image here and get my bearings and then i'm going to zoom in and let you read off roads if you need help. maybe let's do some rain rates after that. because
5:20 pm
off some of these, coming right off 242. thomas court, as well. this area under the gun. kay's way, these are small neighborhoods. if you live on these williams lane right there, looks like a little bit of a cul-de-sac, please, please, please be careful. we're driving this radar as we're go. anywhere from holly field lane, hayes lane, it comes all the way out to the east, fancy discovery lane, we've got some great names here and continue off to the east with that. so, again, tornado warning until 5:30 for central, st. mary's county. we'll watch this, lots of hail. let's get the rain rates. 2.5 inches per hour right in this red area right here. there the darker the color, the heavier the rain is falling, over two-thirds. this is where we're watching right now for possible rotation, back by allen's fresh, you're dry now. but you still have the
5:21 pm
thunderstorm warning. again, you can see all of this is moving to the south and east. it looks like you're in the clear, for now, we're still have a few severe thunderstorm warnings out to the west into virginia. this is the one we're concentrating on. tornado warning still up, amelia? >> let me double check. >> i'm seeing it. yes. >> we're still have some -- let's move that up. there you go. we're still watching, there is a tor -- there's a severe thunderstorm warning in orange, that goes until 5:30. that, again, is for stafford county and then headed back off towards faulkner county. this is moving pretty slow at. quantico marine base will get clipped by that, again, areas along i-95. that will eventually move off to the southern maryland area, as well. this is something we'll watch. but, again, this atmosphere is becoming a little bit more stabilize. we're still do have that tornado warning up until 5:30. amelia. >> i'm going to read some towns where we're
5:22 pm
coming in. not only tornado, potentially, but quarter size hail. this storm, again, moving towards the south's and picking up some steam at about 15 miles an hour. leonard town, this is the area that i am most concerned about and i certainly was earlier. oakley, if you lever in these towns, you need to be in your basement now. if you do not have a basement, go to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sterdy building. avoid windows. you want to move to the closest substantial shelter and, of course, with these situations we're can always see flying debris, as well. i'm doing to kind of hone into this area just to kind of reset for you, we're still have a tornado warning. this tornado warning now, only in effect for parts of st. mary's county. this is going to go for another 8 minutes, again, a tornado warning until 5:30, another eight minutes for st. mary's
5:23 pm
are the biggest areas of concern as i look at the radar right now. again, a tornado warning for st. mary's county. this is going to go until 5:30. you're also under that tornado. 470. 242, bay side road, if you're saying i live in that area in st. mary's county, or you know somebody that does, call them, text them, let them know, along route 5, along single tree drive. you need to be getting into an interior room right now. it's this area that i'm concerned about along mechanicsville road, along 234. this is going to be the area where we are, potentially, seeing a tornado on the ground and why i'm saying potentially, this is radar indicated. when i'm looking at the hail, i'll have good news here. it looks like the hail field of the potential for the size of hail has certainly gone down somewhat, if you want to talk to folks kind of about what we're seeing with the coloring there on the map. >> the brighter the color, the bigger the hail is going
5:24 pm
around an inch, that storm has weakened just a little bit. so we're not seeing it quite up there at that point. it is still pretty big hail that is coming throughout the region. i was just checking our twitter reports right now to see if anybody had seen anything down in chapico again we're haven't seen anything yet. i know you're seeing a lot of lightning, heavy downpours, lots of rain -- rain rates up to about 3 inches per hour. we're getting about 28 strikes here. and this is going to continue to move down to this south and east at about 10 miles aur. this tornado warning goes into st. mary's county, central st. mary's county, leonard town area. and this will be in effect until 5:30. so we're just got about another six minutes or so. again, this has been radar indicated. i have not had anybody say anything. this has been radar indicated where we've seen hooks on here that would lead us to believe that there could be a storm capable of producing
5:25 pm
here are alerts going off again. i'll have amelia figure that off. just in about minutes, if you're in these areas, take shelter now. here we're go, at 5:50, leonard town. society hill just at 6:00, that is where we're going to be watching for these areas, this storm to be moving into that region. again, and now, i think i see a flash flood warning. there we're go. is that flash flood warning. and that's what what was just issued. we were getting the rain rates, amelia, it was up to six inches per hour. right now they're about two-and-a-half, to three inches. this is the area where we're have, now, another situation. we've got some flash flooding around this area, some of these roads are going to definitely have some flooding on them, please be careful. i would just not go out tonight, at least until all of this has receded, everything is out of here and you know it's going to be fine. we're don't though what's going on accept for the fact we're getting a lot of heavy rain in
5:26 pm
latest from the flash flood warning. this is from northwestern, saint eastern charles county. as you can see, this is going to go until 8:30. this storm is slow moving anywhere from 5 to 15 miles an hour. so ewe've seen about three inches. flooding definitely a concern in this area. i'm going to bring the radar back up here and reset and let you see what we're seeing right now. we're have another four minutes on a tornado warning that's in effect for st. mary's county. that radar indicated, the rar da picking up the -- radar picking up the rotation causing the weather service to issue tornado warning. when you look at the latest, we're have a lot going on here, but the first and foremost warning is a tornado warning for saint mary's county until 5:30. we're have new thunderstorm warning, northern st. mary's county that's going to go until 5:0030 and just the latest from
5:27 pm
issuing a flash flood warning until 8:34. and then, finally, the last warning here is a severe thunderstorm warning for southern and northern staffer counties. what i'm seeing right now on the radar, is these storms are just barely moving. they're sitting in one location, lauren we're talk about how much rain fall we've had so far, july was the seventh wettest july on record. and then august this month, we've had over three inches of rain for just over halfway through the month. normally, in august, our whole month we're pick up about three inches of rain fall. so we're already saw that in the first half of the month. so when you get three inches of rain down here in st. mary's county and even in southern parts of and northern stafford counties. that's going to lead to a flash flood warning. it's in effect until until 8:30. we're have three more minutes left on a tornado warning that's in effect for st. 's
5:28 pm
this tornado warning, radar indicated. i keep seeing that, i think that's very important to let you know, we're actually don't have a spotter just yet on the ground that says i see a tornado warning. what i want you to do is take the radar loop and very slowly go back. this warning came out just after the 5:00 hour. so, we're typically, loop our radar on about a two-hour time period. as we're go see this time stamp up here -- or even right here. >> i'll stop it there. >> this is when i was just tweeting the severe thunderstorm warnings if you go to my page you can see that. i was telling shomari and laura saying hey, i think we're need to keep a close eye on this storm. you can see, we're we're talk about the hook, the great time to talk about your kids, a hook echo, look it up. nws or noah hook echo, you'll see what i'm talking about. we're look for the signatures here on the radar. i saw that and soon
5:29 pm
the national weather service did put out that tornado warning that's going to go for another minute here. but i do suspect, lauren, as we're continue to advance the radar. you can see, now, how that distinct shape has kind of left the storm. now, we're just kind of seeing your more average area of heavy rain fall, very slowly moving through the region toward the southeast at 15 miles an hour. but, i do suspect there was a tornado on the ground today, it would be in that area around mechanicsville road around 2:34. we're have only 40 seconds left on a tornado warning and we're going to throw it over to lauren, now with the latest. >> and amelia they just cancelled that right now. they cancelled that tornado warning. and right on queue with what you were saying, because that hook is no longer there and here we're go, as i say that. we'll see what happens with thchlt but we're do -- tornado warning -- let's see, that was already cancelled at this point. let's see what that was coming
5:30 pm
even if you have friends that are boating out there, it was a beautiful day, a lot of people out for the eclipse. indian hit, to cobb island maryland that's until 7:00. if you have people that are in boat, that are in this area along southern maryland, up through the patomic river, out to the chesapeake bay. it's not raining there yet, please give them a call, we're do have possibly severe weather headed towards the water to the bay. so, again, a lot of people on their boats may be watching the eclipse today. be sure to call family members if they're out there, amelia. >> i want to kind of let everyone know what the beeping was, we're get beeping into our studio when a warning was issued the beeping you were hearing for the flash flood warning that's in effect for charles and saint mary's counties until 8:30 this evening. they have allowed every other warning to expire. st. mary's county no longer
5:31 pm
no longer seeing a severe thunderstorm in effect until 5:30. i want to let lauren kind of chime in here as we're wrap up our coverage this afternoon. >> and we'll get it back to news, i want to put this, we're have a severe thunderstorm warning. saint mary's county, that goes until 6:15. that's the storm you're looking at, that area is in a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:15 and we're have that one back in culpepper, that also goes until 6:15, as well. few thunderstorm warnings out there, at this point and, again, we'll continue to watch these. we'll kind of gather our notes, the tornado warning has been cancelled and that is the most important thing, again, severe thunderstorm warning, flash flood warnings still up for charles county and saint mary's county, please do not go anywhere, if you are in the southern maryland area, we're going to continue to get some details on exactly what's going on down there, but i will just stay put where you are and also if you're in the
5:32 pm
