>> savannah and craig, nice to see you both. i tried to come down to the white house this morning to talk to the vice president of the united states, mike pence, who happens to be sitting right across from me. we're doing this interview, first of all, good morning, nice to see you. doing the interview in the roosevelt room just to give people the lay of the land here, it's just across the hall from the oval office, not too much of a walk from your office, just down the hall. it's a building or an office that people use here during the day for daily meetings, at least members of the white house staff do. we're going to talk to the vice president in just a moment, but first let's go out to the north lawn here at the white house. nbc's peter alexander is joining us, we will talk more about what the president had to say on afghanistan last night. >> reporter: good morning. welcome to the white house. the president who in the past has repeatedly blasted the war in afghanistan as steet al disaster and called for a sweeping withdrawal is now taking ownership of this deepening fight. late monday outlining his

16-year conflict though offering few details about how he would do it or even what victory would look like. the president acknowledging an about face on afghanistan. >> my original instinct was to pull out, but all my life i've heard that decisions are much different when you sit behind the desk in the oval office. >> reporter: president trump now promising to pump additional troops into the war torn country, though not specifying how many and not naming any particular benchmarks for success. >> conditions on the ground not arbitrary time tables will guide our strategy from now on. i will not say when we are going to attack, but attack we will. >> reporter: the long awaited announcement following months of deliberations. >> a hasty withdrawal would create a vacuum that

including isis and al qaeda, would instantly fill. >> still the president insisting his new plan will not be open-ended. >> our commitment is not unlimited and our support is not a blank check. >> reporter: detailing what may best be described as the emerging trump doctrine. >> we are not nation building again. we are killing terrorists. >> reporter: mr. trump now the third straight president to grapple with this unrelenting conflict. >> terrorists take heed. america will never let up until you are dealt a lasting defeat. >> reporter: calling for a diplomatic surge and pressuring neighboring pakistan to step up. >> we can no longer be silent about pakistan's save havens for terrorist organizations. >> reporter: the president opening his remarks, trying to smooth over tensions following his highly critical comments in charlottesville. >> loyalty to our nation demands loyalty to one another.

conservative media outlet run by steve bannon lashed out, slamming the decision as a, quote, flip-flop that reverses course. the president notably largely stuck to the script last night. americans will wait to see what they hear from him on this evening when he heads out west for another campaign style rally, this time in phoenix. >> peter, thank you very much. the president of the united states is mike pence and he joins us this morning live. mr. vice president, nice to see you. >> thank you, matt. welcome to the white house. >> good to be here. let's talk about the president's speech last night. he's getting applause from a lot of people, some criticism, a lot of the of the criticism i'm hearing this morning deals with specifics. for example, he's going to send more troops to afghanistan but he didn't say how many and what timeline he would use for them being there. you were a key part of the discussions that led to this new strategy. how many toops are going? >> the answer to that i think will be based on the conditions on the ground, which is the fundamentaan

approach that our president has taken to afghanistan. in the past in the last administration in particular we had a changing strategy and changing tactics on the ground. there were artificial time tables for the conditions on -- >> based on -- >> -- well, what president trump has made clear here is conditions on the ground, the drive toward a stable and peaceful afghanistan will drive american policy and will drive american decisions in the region. >> you say this is a departure from the policies of the past, the obama administration, the editor of breitbart tweeted after the speech last night, quote, trump's afghanistan speech was obama's speech minus the deadline and the details. he's saying that this speech -- or this strategy is very similar to the strategy of barack obama. >> the truth is that the last administration engaged in a short-term surge in afghanistan and then announced a timetable for withdrawal, literally em

when you look at afghanistan and pakistan that region is home to 2 different terrorist organizations that are recognized by our national government, but we haven't been sending a clear signal about american commitment and resolve and after an exhaustive review, taking in the input not only of all of his generals but of our key diplomats and state department, all of our experts in the region, president trump sent a message of resolve and commitment, they said to the people of afghanistan we are with you. he said to pakistan that they need to step up, he's calling on india to be a better and more strategic partner. this is a whole new regional strategy for south asiawñg6 ands all driving toward the objective of a stable and peaceful afghanistan in the long-term. >> without numbers and without a timeline isn't this an extremely open-ended commitment to a war that's already dragged on for 16 years. >> as you are aware the pentagon in june made a request for some nearly

the region. >> is that the number? >> i think it's yet to be seen and we will certainly be making that information available as the president receives recommendations, but let me be very clear about this, what the president has decided is to deploy a sufficient number of troops at the brigade level in afghanistan to assist the afghans who are in the lead, who are at the tip of the spear in this fight, to assist them in their fight against the taliban, in their fight against the had a canny network, al qaeda, isis that are there and also the president will make available additional air combat resources using those brigade level personnel to call in that firepower. look, we're there to help the afghans win and the president made a commitment that we're going to be there until we win and the american troops with new rules of engagement will be able to accomplish that there, matt, just like they're doing in iraq and in syria. >> on the subject of pakistan, real quickly, the

to stop harboring terrorists, stop allowing terrorists to operate with free rein within their borders. if they don't tow the line is it possible he will go one step forward and he will declare pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism? >> well, pakistan just simply needs to do more. we all think back of the time that the mastermind of 9/11, osama bin laden, was found living in a compound in pakistan, literally within just a few short miles of their military academy. we are aware that terrorist elements that attack our troops, attack innocent civilians and afghan forces will bring violence and then they'll race across the border. what the president said last night to pakistan is that we're putting them on notice. they need to step up as a partner and if they want to see the united states continue to partner with them for security in the region, they need to do

organizations that are using particularly northern pakistan, the waziristan area as a safe haven. >> let me ask you about other items in the news. mr. vice president, have you ever met a neo nazi or a white nationalist or white supremacist that you consider to be a fine person? >> never in my life have i met anyone associated with white supremacists or kkk or the neo nazi movement that i would have anything other than contempt for. >> so when the president made his comments following charlottesville -- >> honestly i can't remember meeting people in that category. i see them on television and as the president has made clear, we have denounced those organizations. >> well, but the president said that there were fine people on both sides of that rally in charlottesville. so when he said those words you obviously didn't agree with him. did they offend you, those words? >> il

>> i can't account for the views of that person on their opinions. the president disavowed david duke long ago and we disavow him as well. the point is what i think is disconcerting to the american people are first the views of these bigots that again in his speech last night the president rejected. he likened america to our military personnel and he said that when one has patriotism in your heart there is no room for bigotry or hatred. that's the core of this president, the core of his administration. >> you are a loyal defender of this president and you should be commended for that, but other top republican leaders have rebuked him, top military leaders have rebuked him, business leaders have rebuked him for his comments on charlottesville and you continue to defend him. are you putting your loyalty above and in front of what's in your heart and your gut? >> matt, i kno

i know his heart and i heard him. i heard him on the day that the charlottesville tragedy happened when he denounced hate and violence in all of its forms from wherever it comes. i heard him on that monday and i heard him as well on tuesday like millions of americans did, where he condemned the hate and the bigotry that was evidenced there -- >> but went back to saying there's blame on both sides. >> look, we understand that criticism comes with this job and this president has the kind of broad shoulders to be able to take t but last night i thought what you heard the president do in addition to announcing a new strategy that we believe is going to advance the security and safety of the american people, advance stability in south asia for this generation and the next, but i think you also heard the president do, what he will continue to do, and

that we need to come together around our soldiers, we need to come together around our most vulnerable and we need to come together because as the president often says when we are united there's nothing that the people of the united states of america can't couple of hours. it's time to wrap. i will say, vice president pence, thank you for your time this morning. accomplish. >> savannah. >> matt, thank you very much. we have breaking news overnight, dozens of passengers injured when a train crashed into another train at a station outside philadelphia. nbc's rehema ellis has the latest on this stent. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the accident happened just after midnight sending more than 40 passengers -- injuring more than 40 passengers and at least four of them are listed in critical condition this morning. the train's conductor was among them, he was hospitalized, treated and released. this crash happened at the station behind me, o

busiest in the philadelphia area, rattled passengers as they were just winding down their way. overnight panic and pain for late night commuters in pennsylvania after a high speed train crashed into an empty railcar parked in a suburban philadelphia station injuring dozens of passengers. >> we got to the terminal, i stood up to get off and get ready to get to my bus on time and, smack, it hit the other trolley parked. >> reporter: officials say the inbound norristown train crashed into an unoccupied parks train at the 69th street terminal in upper darby, injuring 42 people. >> my face hit the wall, put a big hole in the wall and i went straight down, i blacked out. there was blood everywhere, yeah, the driver was all banged up and there was this one girl bleeding out of his face pretty bad. >> came in what they call hot or fast and struck the other train. >> reporter: eight area hospitals are treating patients injured in the collision, the train's

released. this crash is the third in a string of accidents in the philadelphia area in recent years. in february four people were injured when multiple cars litted near the 69th street terminal. and in may 2015, eight people died and more than 200 were injured within an amtrak train from washington, d.c. bound for new york city derailed in philadelphia. the southeastern pennsylvania transportation authority called septa said there likely will be service disruptions this morning and right now the cause of this crash is being investigated. savannah and craig. >> rehema, thank you. also this morning new developments in the search for ten american sailors missing after that collision involving the "u.s.s. john mccain" and the investigation is taking a new twist. could the ship and possibly others in the navy's fleet have been targeted by hackers?

singapore with the latest on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. that is the u.s.s. john s. mccain docked here just over my shoulder. a press conference also happening at the port here where navy officials confirming that some of the remains of the missing sailors have been found in damaged areas of the ship and that the malaysian navy has also found some remains at sea. u.s. military divers searching the flooded areas of the destroyer that collided with an oil tanker monday. it comes amid new details of what possibly went wrong. a u.s. navy official telling cnn that the war ship suffered a steering failure during its approach into the strait of mall can a. navy officials have issued a temporary halt for a global safety check. the navy not ruling out a possible

let's take a look at some video that we saw in kansas city, missouri yesterday. look at the downpours of rain that came down in that area.qxxq we saw over 6 inches of rainfall in 24 hours. the water rushing underneath that bridge there, we saw indian creek overthrow its banks and we did see several feet of water flooding areas with a number of rescues out of those floodwaters, especially in the cars that got trapped in it. because of that we do have right now flash flood warnings still in effect, more rain is falling in the general area, although the heaviest of the rain is going to continue to move through southern missouri and eventually through the northeast where we will see a chance of some stronger storms today. we also have heat advisories from new york down to philadelphia and delaware. we will have that feels like temperature with the humidity up around 100 degrees so it's going to be a the who one today. that's a look at the weather across the country, now here is a peek out your window. good morning. it's going to be a hot one

that rocked this town years ago. and prosecutors are looking into whether a separate wrongful death lawsuit may be the reason he opened fire. >> it was an ambush attempted murder on our judge. >> reporter: this morning, investigators are trying to piece together a motive why me thannial richmond tried to shoot a judge. he walked from his car into work. the jubdge returning fire with his own handgun, until a nearby probation officer started shooting. >> we got a man down. >> reporter: richmond was shot and killed. >> you have a judge shot in front of his courthouse. that affected me. steubenville has been in the national spotlight before, over a controversial rape trial in 2013, that ended

school football players convicted in juvenile court. one was the son of the suspected gunman, me thannial richmond, who begged in 2013. >> i beg for leniency. >> reporter: that case never came in front of judge brezees. >> she says a motive for the shooting is not known. but court records show he was presiding over a wrongful death lawsuit, over his mother's death. the family attorney, not representing richmond in that case, said he was struggling. >> there was an electric fire that caused her to lose her life. and i know he was set back by that emotionally. >> reporter: richmond's attorneys in the wrongful death case have not
