this is tear gas. we're in the middle of it. if it was tear gas, we wouldn't be able to breathe now. clearly some smoke filled the air. we heard two fairly large blasts, not calling them explosions, just blasts, we saw the crowd begin to scatter. we have seen recently the police have closed in here. we did see before all of this occurred a number of protesters all dressed in black with masks on faces, looking a bit like that group that we have been talking about. i have been in the crowd all day, brian, they're a very small group within what has been thousands of people, but in a very short period of time, what was a peaceful situation outside this convention center has clearly deteriorated. >> stephanie gosk overnight on msnbc.

close to noon yesterday, crushing news for neighbors here who are young and old, senior citizens, children and families, close to 100 people still living there at this time. the fire department surveyed both buildings here, finding they didn't comply with 14 of 23 fire code violations. that includes nonworking fire alarms, lots of standing trash and debris as well. the violations were first posted back on friday, giving the complex until yesterday morning to comply. neighbors tell us they had other housing options, they would have taken them already. >> be homeless. no one wants to be homeless. as a matter of fact, people that are living here are already in a homeless situation. that's why we're still here. >> reporter: the county as well as red cross are working with residents here to help them find temporary housing, housing they say would just last them about seven days. there's ao

defending himself when he used pepper spray, looks forward to his day in court. police arrested a man they say attacked two women on a bike trail in alexandria. the women attacked 30 minutes apart in broad daylight on a trail near holmes run parkway. 18-year-old joshua sprinkle is in custody, charged with attempted robbery and abduction for the first incident and sexual battery for the second. 6:34. a warning this morning. just before noon you may hear an explosion. we're here to tell you don't be alarmed. sthaer doing a controlled blast between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. this is because they're building a pedestrian underpass under the station. rockville pike will be shut down when the blast happens but not for long. now to a story first on news4. president trump signed a new bill into law, supposed to make metro safer for drivers.

law could mean for you. adam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. you expect to get from point a to b in safe fashion. keeping the train on the tracks. that's what this new bill signed into law by the president allows virginia, maryland and d.c. to create, a new safety commission that can oversee safety here on the system. take a look at this video from last year. this was derailment outside the east falls church station. after that incident half of metro track inspection team was called into question and fired. they found things like falsified reports and that trains were running over tracks that they shouldn't have been running over, quite frankly, for some time. the transit agency hasn't had an enforcement group to enforce penalty. that's what the new bill creates.
