cars, leaving with their belongings. there are other neighbors here too who want viewers to know that not every home in here was in bad shape. you'll see that in a second. but they also say that things could have been different if more of their neighbors took ownership of their community. >> i keep my stuff tight. >> reporter: his home is still fully furnished. >> this is my foundation. >> reporter: but this morning, before work, condo owner darryl lucas packed a few bags of clothes with him before leaving his home, unsure of when he can safely come back. >> i've been here 11 years. >> reporter: before leaving, he took us to a seventh floor condo, showing us a still-broken rail from where his mom fell, his hallway which he says is better kept than most because he pitches in. >> i had a leak here, i fixed that. >> reporter: the home he's maintained for years. >> have you ever been to the second floor. >> reporter: darryl's neighbor george took us to his second floor home, telling us he thinks

lynnhill's downturn started years ago. >> i blame the majority of owners that don't live here and that's about 80% of them. i blame all of them on this. i just plead to the county of maryland, step it up. okay? and help people that need help. >> reporter: after residents finished packing, the property will be fenced off and all neighbors ordered to vacate. that's after a second prince george's county fire department investigation found the condos failed to comply with 14 of 23 fire code violations. and those violations include nonworking fire alarms as well as broken doors and standing debris in the building too, but looking live here, you can see the u-haul trucks are in place, the red cross too. the prince george's county social services here as well, red cross with them helping those who are in need of finding temporary housing, which should last for at least about seven days. we can tell you what will happen next out here at noon, thi

shooter on the run right now, but arlington police say you're safe. this happened just as rush hour was ending. police say that a man -- suspect shot someone on south frederick street right off columbia pike. they're still looking for that person but they say there is no threat to the community right now. the victim was also male. no word on his age as of now. he is expected to survive. well, at first, it looked like it would be one of the few protests of president trump that would be peaceful. but it wasn't long until things spiralled out of control. >> this was the scene outside of the president's rally in phoenix last night. protesters clashed with police as they fired pepper spray and tear gas. nbc's jay gray has more. >> reporter: tensions quickly shifted to confrontation. >> resistance. >> reporter: and conflict in the streets of phoenix. >> there's a lot of people were coughing. i tried to take another route, and

holding metro accountable after years of safety concerns as we first reported, the president signed that bill that will allow for a new watchdog group that could punish the transit agency for not following proper procedures. our transportation reporter explaining what that could mean for your commute. >> reporter: well, what all of this really comes down to is making sure metro is following the rules, whether you're getting on this train over here or this train over here. making sure that you are safe and that you get from point a to point b in the right fashion. from incredible track fires and explosions to derailments where trains were running on tracks that were unsafe, metro has had its share of safety issues. now this new law allows the creation of a strong safety oversight group that could potentially punish metro for not following proper safety procedures. do you think that that's good? >> not bad. >> reporter: this rider happy to hear that mor t

intense, forceful shouting from protesters after police arrested someone on a university campus overnight. you're look at hundreds of people who came together at unc chapel hill to demand another confederate statue come down. they chanted and marched against the silent sam monument for hours. it honors unc alumni, several hundred who served in the confederate army. police arrested three people, including one student. well, a self-proclaimed white supremacist will soon be off the streets. >> the white nationalist wanted by university of virginia police says that he will turn himself in. christopher cantwell was featured in this vice news documentary. it is about the deadly rally that unfolded in charlottesville. he's wanted on three felony charges, including using tear gas. cantwell told the a.p. that he was defending himself when he used that pepper spray and looks forward to his day in court. well,

the family that was terrorized 40 years ago by a member of the ku klux klan. this story is still getting a whole lot of attention on our nbc washington app this morning, a lot of interest in it. during the 1970s, a member of the klan placed a burning cross on the lawn of a college park couple. that man is now a priest in arlington. father william atcheson took a leave of absence yesterday. he wrote, "my actions were despicable and it's hard to believe that was me." one parishioner we spoke to is willing to forgive him. >> now he was enlightened, and so he asks for forgiveness, and as a catholic, as a parishioner, i'd say okay. >> well, today, the couple's attorney will address the fact that the couple never received the restitution he was ordered to pay them. new this morning, we now know someone survived this scary crash. a

the pickup truck turned upside down in damascus this morning. this is main street right outside of the damascus library. montgomery county police did not say what caused the crash, but they did tell us whoever was inside should be okay. an off-duty sheriff's deputy saved a man and his wife by shooting at them. the florida couple's car was going up in flames just as the deputy was driving by. he jumped off his motorcycle, realized the couple was trapped and then made a split-second decision to fire his gun to get the door open. >> we had to use other means to get into the vehicle. i had to use my off-duty weapon to fire one shot and put a hole in the window. >> deputy went into the backseat and helped the couple out. they are both okay. we now know that nearly 700 drivers say that their vehicles that were splattered with all that liquid asphalt used in a road project, out on miniville road in wood bridge, it was ugly. >> it was and it was about two

told you about that tar trouble earlier this month. northern virginia bureau chief jul julie carrey talked to several drivers. >> reporter: before and after. matt goldman's pickup truck and his wife's suv looking a lot better than they did two weeks ago. that's when they were among hundreds of drivers that splashed through tar slush on miniville road and got spattered with the gunk. it's now up to the vdot-contracted paving company to make things right, to pay for cleaning. but goldman's not satisfied with the work. there's still tar specks in many spots on both vehicles, and take a look at the undercarriage. still a mess. >> vdot told me it was a hundred percent satisfaction guaranteed and i'm not a hundred percent satisfied. i know it's going to be hard to get everything off but i know i need some more cleaning. >> reporter: brenda's nearly new

she contacted us with another concern. the cleaning process damaged the finish on her car's point and dp dulled the grill and the trim. >> that's a lot of discoloration from the chemical or whatever they used to clean that gunk off of the car. >> reporter: at the car wash that handled her vehicle and dozens of others, the owner says they're trying hard to make customers happy, hiring extra staff to handle the workload. he says those who are not satisfied should let him know so he can work on a solution. >> we tried to work it out in a professional way. i have done about close to 200 cars as of today, and i do have a complaint, one or two. that's it. >> reporter: today, the car wash sent an insurance adjuster to get a look at brenda's car. the estimate, $1,700 to repair. as for matt goldman, who used a different cleaner, he's still waiting for the paving company to satisfy his

involving a u.s. warship off the coast of singapore. as nbc reports, a top commander has been relieved of his duties. >> reporter: this change of command is among the first steps in the navy's operational pause that's happening worldwide. the commander of the seventh fleet was due to retire in a few weeks anyway. his replacement was tapped in may, but this switch is going to happen immediately. there was talk of loss of confidence in a statement from pacific command. there have been two major deadly mishaps in the last two months alone, two other incidents this year. pacific command trying to determine whether this is a systemic problem and what specifically was the reason for that crash of the "uss john mccain" with an oil tanker. was it exhaustion, negligence, traffic in this busy shipping lane, even cyber attack is being considered. they say no options or possibilities are

at the same time, there is still a search underway for the ten missile sailors. divers yesterday found the remains of some of the missing sailors in the damaged part of the ship. as well, malaysia's navy recovered some remains from sea, so there is also a grieving process and a healing process that is getting under way as the search continues for those who are still missing. now back to you. and fearing the worst, a mother in texas says he's learned just last night that her 20-year-old son is among those missing sailors. she said that she had served -- that he had served aboard that warship since last fall, since october. well, it is a good reminder to think before pressing "send." a mom of three says she was belittled by the u.s. treasury secretary's wife over an instagram comment. jenny miller commented on this photo posted by steve mnuchin's wife, louise linton. it shows the two of them getting off a gnm

>> you moved to the area after working in some famous spots in new york. >> yeah. >> so tell us what we can expect at vermilion now that you're running things in the kitchen there. >> well, i am trying to incorporate a lot of my experience and just trying to make it more of my style, so today i'm going to show you a dish that i think is actually kind of definitive of that style. >> okay, cool. >> something simple, italian, but kind of shows off the produce and products of virginia. so what we're going to do is we have some fresh grilled peaches which are great right now. sun is beautiful. >> i love the peaches. >> lots of ripeness. so we're going to do grilled peaches and i think when you're grilling peaches, you want to keep them mostly raw. the sweetness and the flavor of raw peaches is delicious and it really gets complemented well. >> so just slice up your peach and put it tonigon the grill. is there a secret. >> i'm always looking for this kind of charred, bitter grill flavor, really offsets the sweetness of the peaches really

salad. >> first off, we have our peaches that i have sliced right here. i'm going to season them really quickly with a little bit of lemon juice and olive oil. no big deal. >> very nice. >> and this is a straciatelli cheese. it's like mozzarella. just make a little base of your straciatelli. >> and tell me what sorts of produce right now works. because it's sort of the end of summer but not quite fall. >> yeah. >> and speeches are still in season, which is a good thing. >> yes. well, i think peaches, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers are really good right now. all these things are really, really ripe right now, and even though the summer's almost over, it's kind of when everything is at its sweetest, just before it goes out of season. >> so get it all in right now. >> just kind of made a little pattern here with our peaches. >> very pretty. >> this is salsa verde,

new warning that's into the newsroom about a spike of cases of salmonella. remember back in may when d.c. mayor muriel bowser supported banning chicken coops for health reasons but she backed down from pressure from animal lovers. nbc reports the mayor may have been on to something. >> the whole structure is kind of the chicken coop. >> reporter: just outside atlanta, ann marie anderson, like so many americans, is raising her own chickens for the fresh eggs and the fun of it. >> i think they've become very mainstream. >> reporter: but the center for disease control warning those backyard coops have caused a nationwide salmonella outbreak. >> we're following ten different outbreaks right now. each of them is caused by a different strain of salmonella. >> reporter: the cdc reports that 961 people have tested positive for salmonella this year. that's more cases than in all of 2016. it's
