working to uncover a story about father acheson's klansman past and was close to exposing it but then the father outed him search. the father is now 62 years old. he's based here at st. leo the great catholic church off of old lehigh way. in the herald, he writes that the violence in charlottesville moved him to rebuild his past ties to kk kchl. now we know it could be something else. his past included in those times cross burnings at howard and prince george's counties in the 1970s. philip and barbara butler found one of acheson's burning crosses on their lawn in college park. they're speaking about that ordeal. butlers say it's time for acheson to name accomplices because they do not believe he acted alone. eun, if he's truly sorry, he will do them that service by outing other people who cause him so much hur in t

a lot of kids probably aren't excited about the idea that summer vacation is ending. when you've got a brand new school like this one, it probably takes the edge off a little bit. you're looking at the exterior of this school. we want to give you a look inincompetent side. equipment and classrooms. but what will stand out, there's so many windows throughout the building and in classrooms. the county says this is the first time they've ever had this type of architectural design for one of their now 90 public schools. in addition to brand new facilities and the more than 1100 students that will be attending. the principal made it her mission to try to meet every student before they even started today. the pins principal had the incoming fifth graders send a letter. they could ask her anything. and she answered every one. that will help students as they enter school for the first time in just a couple

heading back to the classroom along with 800 new teachers this year. coming up in a few minutes, meagan fitzgerald shows us why the county is so excited about this brand new middle school. >> looks gorgeous right now. >> kids heading back to school also means more traffic on the roads. as you probably already noticed the difference. >> you spend more time sitting in traffic, it can get tempting to pick up the phone. as scott macfarlane and the i-team shows us, a lot of people are getting pulled over for distracted driving near schools. >> reporter: you'll see it as early as next week. the summer traffic gives way to stop-and-go traffic. and traffic jams. making it harder to get to your parking lot and get to work. it will also get more tempting to pick up the phone and check all those e-mails and text messages. more people are doing that. an investigation by the news 4 i-team shows a spike in distracted driving cases in our region. in fairfax county alone, we found 12,000 accidents linked to driver

2014. in montgomery county, police stopped 11,000 drivers for distractions since just last year. we found 1400 of them were in school zones. at the virginia tech transportation institute, the i-team got behind the wheel on a safe test road to see how texting and driving could impact our reflexes near schools. >> nearly colliding with strategically placed hazards on the safe road. >> people are lulled into complacency in traffic. >> yes. we find out a lot in stop-and-go traffic where people will take their eyes off the road for more than four seconds. only traveling 5 or 10 miles an hour. that's when they'll have fender benders with the car in front of them. >> not just slow traffic but in fast traffic too. tonight on our investigation at 11:00, we go on the highway with police to see what drivers are doing behind the wheel at 70 miles an hour. for now, scott macfarlane, news 4 i-team.

heading toward texas in the form of a tropical storm. harvey is probably going to become a hurricane. people are stocking up to make sure they stay inside and safe. they have dozen of emergency generators ready to go. harvey has about 24 hours before it hits land and the system could affect us in the washington, d.c. area. the rough thing is it's going to sit there a couple of days. >> that's what's so bad about this storm. it could make a hurricane before it makes landfall. then it gates stationary, doesn't really move. it will dump lots of rain in southern parts of texas. they could see 15 inches or more. there could be bad flooding there. for us, locally, like we mentioned, could be impacting our area for labor day weekend. for now, we're dealing with a fantastic start to your day. your outdoor planner, roll the windows down.
