before the saturday -- at some point he will be taken to charlottesville to face three felony charges the confederate at the center of the rally is causing controversy still. a man with a gun strapped to his leg tried to cut a black tarp off the robert e. lee statue yesterday. crews had put up the tarp hours earlier as a symbol of mourning for the woman killed in the rally. the man said it was desecration. but he stopped cutting the tarp when police arrived. the stonewall jackson statue was covered also. a tale of two trumps. >> he lashed out to critics and the media. the president called for unity in reno, nevada at the american legion >> it's time to heal the wounds that divide us and seek a new unity based on the common values that unite us.

and one great flag. >> the president's speech in reno was full of calls for patriots and national healing. it is a terrible situation for military families who are already sacrificing soap. >> now a family is hoping for the best about their son. electronics technician second class kevin bushell serves on the "uss john mccain." he's one of ten sailors who wept missing in singapore. he graduated from high school in 2009. his family is asking for privacy this morning. so far the bodies of fie five of the ten sailors have been identified. it was two months ago that seven sailors died after a similar accident on the "uss fitzgeral fitzgerald." two men from the area, fitzgerald and the mccain are both in the vy

today marks 25 years since hurricane andrew hit. the category 5 hurricane tore through south florida back in 1992. >> 44 people died in that storm. it also leveled tens of thousands of buildings and left more than a million without power. andrew is still the most destructive storm to ever hit florida. i was living in florida at that time. but now we're talking about something else. talking about tropical storm harv harvey. locally, we have clouds around. we'll see the cloud cover when

then. an immigrant rights group says the agents racially profiled the people they arrested the raid happened apartment the fairmont gardens apartments. the people behind the lawsuit say the men happened to be there. >> agents in the field looking for a person and they don't find him. they basically arrest some other people they do find instead. they call it collateral arrest. we call it racial profiling. the men who were arrested in february have a deportation hearing five month from now. i.c.o. told news 4 they conduct targeted -- compliant with federal law and agency policy and it does not target people indiscriminately. the news 4 i-team found out the dump truck driver who triggered this deadly inferno will not be charged. the driver bass on his phone when he slammed into the back of an suv. there is insufficient evidence to charge the driver. ot

stops to make way for a congressional motorcade when he was hit and killed. witness also question whether that motorcade was being operated safely. investigators said the driver had ten seconds to see and stop for the motorcade but failed. he just wants to move on with his life and then hung up. this haunting video is tough to watch still and made many of you think twice about putting your kids on a ride this summer. it shows the deadly accident at the ohio state fair last month. the accident is forcing other ride inspectors to ramp up their efforts to keep your family safe. that includes the maryland state far starting today. state inspectors looked over every ride yesterday including the same fireball type ride in ohio that malfunctioned. the maryland fireball ride is never easy to inspect. >> our communications, as andy said, started two weeks ago, about what we were going to

back to you. >> all right, jack, thank you. 6:32. these are the top stories we're following this morning. it wasn't any one of us. but somebody did win the powerball jackpot. that single winning ticket matching all six numbers was sold in massachusetts. you still should check your ticket, though. million dollar tickets were sold in maryland, virginia and 17 other states. we've posted them in the nbc washington app. take a look at this video. the man in it may know something about a murder. they want to talk to him about a deadly shooting in lanham earlier this month. the video is from greenbelt. the same day troy foster was killed. a car drove into a crowd of protesters late last night in st. louis. the crowd was marching for a transgender woman who was killed by police. no one was seriously hurt. >> reporter: it's the first day of school in loudoun county much thousands of kids are getting ready to start a new school year. coming

this new middle school is grabbing so much attention. it's now 6:32. news 4 have learned about the catholic priest who admitted he had ties to the kkk. >> the priest from the arlington diocese admits to targeting people because of their race. two of his victims are seen in this video. this morning we're hearing directly from one of them. we're also learning why the priest came forward when he did. news 4's justin finch is live with what we've learned. justin? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. it turns out timing may have played a role. a reporter was working a story that would have outed his kkk past. but in his essay out this week, he says that he was moved to share his own story after the violence in charlottesville. father william aitcheson is on leave from his duties at st. leo the great -- off old lehigh

this all comes to light as his kkk past has come to light here as well. we're also hearing this week from two of his victims. philip and barbara butler who say they found one of aitcheson's burning crosses on their college park lawn. almost 40 years ago. the memory still haunts them, four decades later. >> of what's going on. your family, you know. i can't say that i was mad or i was afraid. all of it was involved. >> reporter: the butlers say they are still waiting aitcheson to pay them the court ordered $23,000 in damages. they also say if he is truly sorry, he will more than likely out the rest of his

gaithersburg high school. his family is asking for privacy and sending prayers to the families of other sailors. so far the bodies of five of the sailors have been identified. it was only two months ago that search sailors died after a similar accident involving the "uss fitzgerald" off the coast of japan. there was a sailor from baltimore, maryland and another from fluvanna county, virginia. they're both in the navy's seventh fleet. the commander has been relieved of duty. a difficult morning for a family in the trinidad neighborhood in d.c. we know a man was killed in a shooting on oats street northeast. this happened yesterday. one of two shootings within an hour in northeast d.c. as our last update, the other victim was in grave condition. after eight surgeries, a d.c. woman still can't walk after being hit by a dump truck and the man who hit her, may get off with only a ticket. d.c. police say

bianca butler as she was trying to cross the street near the shell gas station. she thought she was going to die after the truck dragged her nearly 70 feet. the driver stopped when he heard her screaming. he's been cited for failure to yield the right-of-way. butler spoke only to pat collins about the moments after that crash. >> did he talk to you after this happened? >> he didn't talk to me. he said i'm so sorry about what happened. i said that's all you got to say. look, i can't even walk now because of you. >> alvarez also faces hit and run charges after a crash. a gallaudet student was seriously hurt in that incident. expect to learn more about how a woman ended up dead, buried in the sand at a popular beach. you may remember the story. the medical examiner says ashley o'connor suffocated. she was a newlywed from texas. she was discovered when someone saw her h
