weekend. category 2 hurricane. it's getting close to texas now. bringing rain bands on shore. coming up, somara theodore will be back in a couple minutes with a closer look at the hurricane and the impact on texas. locally, i talked about the cool temperatures. we're in the 630s right now. take a look at this. 67 degrees in washington. 60 in gaithersburg. 55 in winchester. 59 warren ton. 63 in clinton. 67 in quantico. a little cooler this morning than it was yesterday morning. so you might walk outside and say it's a little chilly out there. but the roads are on the drier side. now, we had a couple showers pass through overnight. you might run into some wet roads but a lot of the rain is headed out. we'll look at that coming up. let's check the roads with jack taylor at with. top. good morning, jack. >> good morning. on the inner beltway, no slowdo t

lanes. that should be in the clearing stajts. also wrapping up the work in virginia. leaving springfield on the inner loop, the he can press lanes towards mcclain are in the process of opening. they've been closed overnight. we've had a paving project. the john hanson highway headed after 301 and towards 197. crews have been working the two right lanes getting by that also. should be in the clearing stage. eun, adam, back to you. >> jack, thank you very much. right now we're tracking hurricane harvey. the storm is getting stronger as it barrels towards texas. while you were sleeping, the storm was picking up in intensity. it's now a category 2 storm. expected to hit texas sometime today into tomorrow. >> take a look at this picture from nasa of harvey. you can see how wide it is. look at the eye of the storm too. we have storm team coverage of this storm. we want to check in with sarah dallof in galveston, texas. one of the areas expectedbe

hardest hit. how are people preparing? >> reporter: good morning, eun. they are bracing for impact. this area hasn't seen a major hurricane with winds topping 110 miles per hour in nearly a decade. harvey is shaping up to be just that. now, ahead of landfall, the governor of texas has declared an emergency in 30 counties, seven counties currently under mandatory evacuation orders. now, the problem with harvey, once it makes land, it could actually linger inland for several days dumping up to 2 feet of rain on to an already saturated area. concerns for noflooding is very very high. as for now, officials urging people to be prepared, not only for the storm but for the days following and stores are seeing shortages already of food, fuel and water. back to you guys. >> all right. sara doll after live in galveston texas for us.

the storm. >> our coverage continues with meteorologist somara theodore. it's moving in. >> yes, it is. take a look at the satellite and radar. it's got warnings from brownsville, texas to corpus christi taking the brunt of this. sorry, issues with the clicker. fon the less, the rain bands are going to be making impact. we've got rain bands beginning to make impact. as you take a look, we're starting to see the deep reds towards bay city. they are picking up the first line of heavy showers. with hurricanes, you can see thunderstorms spinning up. tornadoes are also going to be an issue they'll be having on the ground there, along with the storm surge and the flooding conditions. here's the track right now. it is creeping at 9 miles per hour towards the northwest. at landfallt could be a category 3 hurricane. that's really intense. we're expecting the timing to be late tonight into saturday morning. the folks

few more hours to evacuate. this will continue to meander over the texas coast and track towards houston. amounts of rainfall are copious. take a look at this. 10 to 30 inches possible in areas like corpus crust hristic. we'll continue to watch the storm throughout the day. it's causing chaos for people trying to fly in and out of texas as you can imagine. >> erika gonzalez picks up our coverage from the live decks. what are we seeing at the airports? >> a lot of canceled flights already. we're talking about houston, corpus christi. that's where the bulk of flight cancellations are this morning with more than 60 getting the no go. this is so big that all the other cities around the area are feeling it too. dfw with 17 cancellations. brownsville, close to south padre island. two dozen cancellations there. this video we're showing you is from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. this is a team flying right in

the h category 2 and ill could intensify before making landfall. adam? >> thank you very much. there are concerns that harvey will disrupt a hub of the oil industry in texas, which then could cause a surge in gas prices. >> justin finch is live to explain what this could mean for how much you pay at the pump. justin, good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. perhaps you were used to paying a certain price for gas. but guess what? that could change very soon at this wawa. $2.17 a gallon for regular here. that could jump between $.0 a and $.10 over the weekend with hurricane harvey. that area very oil and refinery rich. the refineries being evacuated ahead of the storm here. already disrupting production and raising gas prices per gallon. the x factors will be how bad will that

refineries get beaten up. it could further delay and disrupt production and further spike up the gas prices. the thing for drivers to consider as they make summer plans here, they met a man here this morning who says luckily a company covers his gas. each a slight increase in the prices could leave them paying a lot more. >> i'm pretty fortunate. my company takes care of all the gas expenses. drive a company vehicle. able to take advantage of that. >> reporter: you know, ahead of labor day weekend, this could really impact plans for a lot of drivers. some analysts saying we could see a jump by $.25 per gallon by labor day weekend. to put this in context here, during hurricane katrina gas prices went up by $.40 a gallon overnight. some analysts say. just fin continue finch, news 4. harvey could go down in history. amelia draper is headed

to cover the storm live. stay with "news4 today" and all weekend long for her live reports. this next story may ease the minds of federal workers in our area. a senior official at the white house says president trump would likely accept a short-term compromise to avoid a government shutdown. that would mean lawmakers could pass a resolution that funds the government for a few months but does not include money for a border wall. that same official says the president would ultimately demand funding for the wall in any long-term spending plan. you may remember the president threatened to shut down the government earlier in phoenix the a a rally if the money for the wall did not come through. four accidents, two deadly are raising concerns for the navy and those risking their lives to serve. a commander of u.s. naval operations says the collision monday between the "uss mccain" and an oil tanker near singapore is evidence of a disturbing trend. two sailors from our area died in june when a

collided with a cargo ship near japan. two more sailors from maryland have been missing since monday's accident. it's 5:09. now to a story only on news 4. take a look at this. this is video of burglars breaking into a home in southeast and a homeowner says when police arrived, they made fun of the situation rather than helping. news 4's meagan fitzgerald joins us live from d.c. police headquarters. meagan, what happened here? >> reporter: so, eun, certainly a situation that seems hard to believe. so these police officers, though they're seen on home surveillance video, not only questioning the victim's sexuality but moments later you can see them dancing. first you'll see the victim or the suspect rather, going for the back door of the home. kicking it in on wood crest drive in southeast. the suspect grabbed some clothes and he leaves with a computer as well. the alarm cpa

beltway owise h been quiet. please be very careful, especially topside of the beltway around temple. we always have the slick spots. be careful as you head out. for now, knock on wood, no accidents. adam, eun, back to you. thanks. a family is dealing with the loss of their son as police investigate a another possible gang member. miguel ruiz carrillo had been missing for three weeks. he was found in prince william county 40 miles from his home in fairfax county. they think the death is part of a recent string of gang murders in northern virginia. multiple agencies are trying to bring closure to his family. >> no matter what agency it is, we're trying to get the family some closure. they have a loved one who is deceased. we want to make sure they get justice. >> fairfax county police made three arrests in connection with the teen's disappearance. jose vincent sosa and

we're learning more about the disushing cheerleading videos out of denver. you've probably seen the videos. about to show it to you again because it is a critical part of the story. we do want to warn you that it is difficult to watch. >> you can hear the girl there saying please stop, please stop. the video shows the teen girls being forced into the splits. according to the nbc station in denver, the coach was dismissed from a similar position just last year for doing the same thing. the coach has been placed on leave again and police are investigating. really upsetting to watch. you will likely see a lot of students moving into local colleges this weekend. if you're a parent, you might want to know how to keep your kid safe when they leave home. there is now technology being used to help students, especially women, stay safe from sexual assault. there ar

can wear if they getouble. some will connect to apps if clothing is being removed while someone is unconscious. others will update your friends and family about your location or there might be a button to contact 911. >> a victim is unable to even stand up for themselves and we want to teach them those kind of situations. >> some experts say the devices are a great idea but they want bystanders to learn how to help prevent sexual violence if they see something going on. that's another important part of the story. 5:17. if you're commuting to work on your bike, there are troubling new numbers to pay attention to. across the country, more bicyclists are dying in collisions with cars. those incidents rose by 12% in 2015. this is according to the governor's highway safety association. now it found that in more than a third of cases, alcohol played a role either for the driver or the cyclist.

that's going to be heavy rain a lot of flooding expected inxa could be devastating. category 2, like i mentioned, winds sustained at 105 miles per hour. once it makes landfall, could be a category 3. kind of meanders around. there's nothing to push it out of the way until early next week. that is bad news for texas. here locally, we could see some of that rainfall. temperature right now, 67 degrees in washington. 68 gaithersburg. 55 winchester. 62 in nas as. radar -- manassas. we have rain in calvert county. mechanicsville not seeing the rain, but it will be clearing out soon. future weather moves that rain out. today, a mix of clouds and sunshine. maybe an isolated shower at best. most of the area just looking pretty good. your winery forecast if that's where you're going to be heading today or through the weekend. it's looking really good if you want to check out local wineries. temperatures ibo

somara theodore. it's moving in, somara. >> yes, it is the first rain bands hitting the coastline. to put it in perspective for the people on the ground. on wednesday, this was a tropical depression. we were seeing wind speeds at 35 miles per hour within 24 hours this reached category 1 status. that is the rapidly intensifying storm we're dealing with. and so are the people on the ground. take a look as we zoom in here. you can see the darker reds and oranges. already the first line of rain bands impacting the texas coast right now. areas towards bay city. zooming out rkt we're looking at the core of the storm where the winds are. that will be approaching this evening tonight into tomorrow morning. about 152 miles off the coast moving at 9 miles per hour. this is a slow mover. >> somara, thank you. now take a look at the current gas prices in prince george's county this morning. here's a live look. now, this could change once hurricane harvey makes landfall. news 4's justin

don't suspect foul play. still no answers as to why she climbed into that hole am o'connor was on vacation with her parents. it's 5:36. this morning, thousands of unsuspecting people have had their credit card numbers stolen and used to buy and sell illegal cigarettes. the group behind the scheme was caught all because of a gas station attendant speaking up. he saw one of the 12 suspects with 50 to 60 credit cards and then called police. this is according to the fbi. take a look here. news 4 cameras were there when federal agents raided two homes in prince george's county yesterday in connection with the investigation. agents took boxes of papers as well and took dogs and spent a lot of time around the outdoor kennel at one of the homes. >> he was -- he bred these things here. and they used them just like that. >> neighbors and sources close t

live from d.c. police headquarters. >> megan, what happened here? >> reporter: according to clarence williams, he says he was out of town and someone broke into his home. so the alarm company called 9-1-1 for police to show up. according to the video, it appears as though police didn't take it seriously. want to get to that video to show you what happened here. you can see the suspect clearly breaking into the back door, smacking that back door window. leaving a short time later with clothes and a computer. police arrive. they knock on the front door and leave. they're called back to the scene by a second time by a neighbor who noticed the smashed back door. this time, police go inside the home and they're heard questioning the man's sexuality. moments later, an officer starts dancing. >> we've got police out here dancing in my home. and acting as if this is a joke. this is serious. this i

it makes landfall in texas. it's very organized. you can see the eye very clearly. it's about 150 miles from corpus christi. it has time to strengthen. conditions look favorable for this to become a major hurricane. look at this track. little bit of a mess here. it's a little jumbled up. what's going to happen is as this storm moves on shore, it's going to stall. there is nothing to push it along. now we're looking at tuesday. it's going to be around southern texas area for the weekend. that could be dropping 25 to 30 inches of rainfall. really bad news for texas. we'll be staying updated through the weekend. radar showing light rain through calvert beach. that's approximate it. some patchy fog for manassas, warrenton. front royal, less than a half mile visibility. temperatures, mid to low 60s. if you're exercising today, it's going to be fantastic. we'll see a mix of clouds and

this is a category 2 hurricane patricia at the moment. you see it getting very close to southern texas. rain bands moving on shore. could be a category 3 once it makes landfall. it's about 130 miles
