corpus christi and this thing could bring anywhere from 25 inches or more of flooding across the area. look at the track here. as it moves on shore early in the morning tomorrow, could be a category 3 hurricane. that's a major storm. then it meanders around. that's why the track looks funny. nothing to move it along until early next week, which is why they expect so much rain. coming up in a bit, we'll talk about the local forecast and how this may impact us labor day weekend. let's look at the roads. we do have dry roads out there with jack taylor. good morning, jack. >> good morning, sheena. we had the accident activity on the topside of the beltway. it was on the outer loop before connecticut avenue. it was on shoulder, sounded like a fender bender. traded the information and moved on. it's an early delayed building. 66 eastbound. same deal as you head towards 28 and centerville. everything was on the shoulder but grabbing a lot of attention. be careful riding through that stretch. south osborn road

it's a two-lane road. equipment is blocking it. be aware if this is a normal cut through for you. it's 6:01. and we're tracking hurricane harvey. rainfall is arriving in south texas. it will only get stronger as the storm gets closer to land. it is expected to make landfall sometime today into tomorrow. while you were sleeping, the storm was getting stronger. it is now a category 2 storm with winds of 105 miles per hour. south and central texas will be hit hardest. the entire gulf coast will be impacted here. the message from officials is get out of the danger zone right now. this will be the first major hurricane to hit texas in a decade. >> we have team coverage on this dangerous storm. erika gonzalez is at the live desk right now. tell us what people are doing to get out of there on time.

flights in a second. i have to show you the video of babies. being evacuated from corpus christi, which is the bull's-eye of harvey's past. ten critically ill babies. some weighing less than a pound were flown with specialized equipment from a hospital in corpus to north texas where they're going to ride out the storm. hospitals fear massive power outages and this is the safest option with their parents driving up from the coast to meet them at the nicu of cook children's medical center in north texas. flights are increasingly hard to get in that area. we've been keeping an eye on flight aware's so-called misery map where more than 100 flights in and out of texas have been canceled. my mom was here for a visit this past week, actually. dropped her off at the airport last night. she was able to make it out with a lot of photographers, actually, from nbc that were on that same flight out of there. so definitely a situation that we're

the potential to devastate oil and gas refineries are. workers are being evacuated down there, which means production has slowed down, perhaps soon to stop. that means that prices will go up. the real concern, though, is how bad will this damage be. should that storm move in there and truly devastate those refineries, we could see prices jump significantly here, which would be felt across the country. here at this beltville, we're speaking with drivers who say they are already prepping for the cost impacts here. >> nobody likes to see it go up. that's the way it is. >> we have storms and stuff, gas usually goes up. drivers rolling with the punches here. but looking ahead to labor day weekend. look at the prices right now. $2.17 for regular. $2.49 for -- we are told by analysts

trend. two sailors from our area died in june when a destroyer collided with a cargo ship near japan. two more sailors from maryland have been missing since monday's accident. today the man accused of killing his stepfather and posting selfies with the body to social media set to be in court for an arraignment hearing. according to wtop, beverly was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month. he was charged with one count of first degree murder. prosecutors say he killed his stepfather, ronald pinckney in early july. pinckney asked for a stay away order against beverly months before that murder. >> by now, you've probably seen this disturbing video pop up on your facebook feed. i posted it on mine. if you haven't seen it, a cheerleader seemingly forced to do the splits. how parents outrage led to new action taken in this case. changes at the airport. a massive construction project under way you might not know about. i'm going to tell you about the project and what's going on at

as you mentioned, this will be winds topping 110 miles per hour that the area has seen indecade. ahead of the landfall, the governor of texas declared a state of emergency. 7 counties under mandatory evacuation orders. not only will it hit the coast, but it has the potential to linger inland for several days bringing with it more than 2 feet of rain to some already saturated areas. flooding is a real concern with this storm. for now, officials are urging people to either leave the area or if they feel they must stay, to be prepared and stores already seeing shortages on food, fuel and flashlights. adam an eun, back to you. well, the stroj he's winstr winds off the coast there. by this evening, we should see that push in. we already have te

he was the head of samsung in south korea. now he's going to jail for five years. shortly after that sentence came down, lee was found guilty of corruption. he bribed south korea's president to try to start a merger. the scandal brought down the president, too. he was also found guilty of perjury and embezzlement. back to you guys. thank you, very much. a disgruntled former restaurant employee is accused of killing the chef and holding a hostage for hours in charleston, south carolina. the suspect stormed the restaurant yesterday around lunchtime. you're looking here at the scene on your screen here. the chef has been identified as anthony shane widen. police shot and wuounded the suspect. the hostage was not harmed. we may never know all the facts after a woman was buried alive at the beach in ocean city. the medical examiner says that ashley o'connor suffocated in a three-foot hole. they say she had been drinking

while she climbed into the hole, what caused the collapse is still a mystery. o'connor is from texas and was in ocean city on vacation with her parents back in july. this next story is tough. we're learning more about the disturbing cheerleading videos out of denver. you've probably seen one of them. we're about to show you it again because it's a crucial part of story, but we want to warn you, it is tough to watch. >> the videos here show teen girms bei girls being forced into the splits. the coach was dismissed from a similar position last year for doing the exact same thing. the coach has been placed on leave. police are investigating. you saw the big baseball fight on tv. a player struck on the elbow and that made him pretty mad. >> why would you attack the catcher?

you are about to step outside, passing showers have left the area. fall-like mornings ahead for several mornings across your weekend. a cool weather pattern taking place. unseasonably cool highs in the afternoon. harvey could bring some of the rain here for labor day weekend. i'll show you that in a second. it's a category 2 hurricane. it's off the coast of texas. this is very organized. conditions are favorable for it to potentially be a category 3 before it makes landfall. it's about 150 miles or so from corpus christi. max winds, 105 miles an hour. so, again, it has a ways to go. it could strengthen to a category 3 before making landfall overnight tonight basically. as it does so, it will linger for a while. remaining stationary for a couple of days. a proximity of the center of this thing to the gulf of mexico is going to be so close, it's going to bring in moisture. that's really bad news for texas. they could continue to see

clothes and a computer. so the alarm company called police. police knocked on the front door. but then they leave. it wasn't until a neighbor notices that back door was smashed, calls police. so they return for the second time. this is where things get interesting. inside the home, you can see these officers dancing and then questioning the man's sexuality. we talked to williams, the homeowner. here's a little bit of what he had to say. >> we've got police out here dancing in my home and acting as if this is a joke. this is serious. this is my life. this is important. and i'm not going to stand for it. i'm just not going to stand for it. >> reporter: now, the police department issued a statement that i want to read for you. it says, "their behavior is not representative of the we are here to help environment. we work tirelessly on a

this is the lweents in fairfax county. they're preparing for a big ge come monday. this is the school's first pre-labor day start. the superintendent of schools says crews are making final preparations to building this weekend to welcome students back this monday. the superintendent says despite the shorter summer vacation, he thinks parents will be happy with the change overall. >> more instructional time before end of the year state assessments and our ib and ap tests. i'm really excited. kids getting out earlier in the summer is a big plus, too. >> it's also the first day of school for that new superintendent, scott bray ban. he's taking over for karen garza. 6:51 now. turning our attention back to hurricane harvey. take a look at what it looks like inside the storm from space. the center of the eye of the storm right there. you can kind of make it out. the eyewall surrounds.

>> beyond that are thein bring l rain. corpus christi is where the storm will make its first landfall. nbc's gabe gutierrez is live for us. tell us what are the conditions like right now? >> reporter: some rain here. the winds are picking up. you see the surf behind me. starting to pick up. that will be the major concern over the next few days. potential for flooding. massive storm surge up along the gulf coast. texas coast. cities like even up to new orleans are going to be dealing with this. the texas governor has preemptively declared a state of disaster for 30 counties. 700 members of the national guard are standing by in order to assist with emergency evacuations or emergency rescues. there has been a run on gas, a run on supplies over the last 24 hours here in corpus christi. here in the city, the mayor is urging people to, quote, get out of dodge. they have voluntary evacuations right now. some of the surrounding areas are under mandatory evaio
