rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. thank you for joining us. a lot to get to including the base brawl. let's start with the top story. >> the gulf coast bracing for the impact of hurricane harvey at this hour and just look at these eye popping images. they were tweeted out overnight by astronauts aboard the international space station. that is a slow moving, big storm. packing winds of up to 100 miles per hour and millions are in its path. >> so we have two reports from texas and we'll get to dylan's poe forecast in a couple of minutes. let's start with gabe gonzalez in corpus christi where hurricane harvey could make landfall sometime tonight. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we have started to see the rain pick up overnight. the winds are starting to pick up, as well. there's some mandatory evacuations for some low-lying areas and texas' govno

>> water, canned goods,ryin s t >> reporter: and gassing up. >> i'm expecting it to get kind of crazy around here. >> reporter: oil companies scrambling to shut down operations in the gulf. experts say the disruption could lead to higher prices at the pump. sandbags are at a premium. fema is prepositioning for a triple threat. the lumbering storm expected to slam into the shore at a category 3 bringing with it a life threatening storm surge of up to 12 feet and then torrential rain through the weekend dumping as much as two feet in some areas causing major flooding concerns. harvey would be the first hurricane to make landfall since 2008 with ike. in louisiana, where hurricane katrina devastated new orleans 12 years ago next week, memories are raw and concern is high because 15 drainage pumps aren't working. >> we are in a more vulnerable

not only worried about the storm surge along the coast but days expected ahead. that is certainly a fear here in galveston, a narrow island community, it is prone to flooding and it knows what a hurricane can do. this area was hit especially hard by hurricane ike in 2008. a lot of damage was caused and some people did lose their alives during that devastating storm. with both mandatory and voluntary evacuations taking place up and down the coast, some transit services were actually offering rides to get people to safer ground before the storm hits. back the you guys. >> thank you very much. dylan is in for al right now. people talk about the storm surge. tide timing is important on this. >> very important. as of right now, it looks like the storm could move in overnight at low tide and alleviate some of the most dangerous storm surge but we are going to see that next high tide

could create coastal indsp to 1. this is a category 2 hurricane. and we are looking at that life threatening storm surge. devastating flooding because of the speed at which the storm is moving. very, very slowly on shore and we have the threat of damaging winds and possible tornadoes today as the storm continues to whip towards the shore. we are looking at the forecast of a category 3 storm around 1:00 a.m. saturday morning and watch as the storm meanders along eastern texas and it is going to produce several days of rain. wednesday at 1:00 in the morning. we have flash flood watches in effect for texas, including houston and all the way west into san antonio. we are looking at a widespread, 15 to 20 inches of rain but some areas could end up with 35 inches of rainfall. this is a very low lying area so that's why we're expecting the devastating flooding. >> so hard to believe, we could be talking about it well into ne

talking the weather today, it is harvey. >> a category 2 hurricane right now. and the rain is already making its way on shore. from corpus christi up to galveston. we will be out and in of pockets of heavy rain from here on out. winds of 110. moving to the northwest and as it does so, it pushes the water on shore so that's where the storm surge comes into play. we could see a storm surge up to about five to seven feet from portmansfield to padre island. we are looking at the largest storm surge from padre island to sergeant, texas. six to 12 feet possible and then lesser amounts working the way up the coast of texas and louisiana where we could see a one to three-foot storm surge for very dangerous coastal flooding in addition to the up to 35 inches of ran that's possible with this storm. that's a look at the weather across the country. no
