down there and what may be coming over the next couple of days. >> not much going here right now when we're landed with my photographer just a couple of hours ago. we were dealing with some showers, you can see. butt of breezier but more than anything we're noticing the humidity. once we're landed our first thing that we're did before anything else was stock up on supplies and folks here doing the same thing. now there are some limits on water, we were at one store where the water was sold out here at another store, there's a two pallet limit on water, so that's a big thing we're seeing. we're also seeing that people have a pretty good handle on the storm, the folks we're talking to. it's all about the rain here. we're will get some winds, obviously, we're noticing the conditions, we'll start to deteriorate later this evening. >> yeah. she's going to be in the houston area. but houston is going to be under the gun for days andme

he tweeted out that picture of himself getting a briefing earlier today. he sent out a tweet saying that he's been in constant communication with the governors of texas and louisiana. now, as you can imagine, hurricane preparedness was a big part of today's white house briefing. we're heard of one of the president's homeland security advisers, even though they're monitoring this, watching this closely, he urged people in that region to be prepared. here is his message earlier today from the white house briefing

to be brewing as congress' summer break draws to a close. president promising a battle over funding of border wall and taking to twitter to from his own party, meet the press moderator chuck todd is here to break down another busy week. congress has less than a month to come up with some kind of a plan to avoid a shutdown. we're know from experience here, it effects thousands of people and really brings business to a stand still, can they work it out. >> first of all, we're dealing with -- we're talking about a sundo shutdown with party controls all over it. usually the shutdown because there's divided government. yes, there is a divide in this government, but it's a divide inside the party. look, the white house seems to be signaling today, we're do want to have a fight on the border wall. there does seem to be acknowledgment that september is not the time

that ceiling, there are too many things on the plate here, which i think, we're all in washington are use to, get ready for the short term, the two or three month continuing resolution that keeps government funded. they get the debt ceiling up, that's going to be difficult. and then they want to get tax reform launched. but i think in december, the next time, like, you know, as we're always know, the punt, punt, actual show down could be months down the road. i think the december or january, however long they do a short-term bill, the president symbolically believes, i think he's right about this, that that is the one promise he's held to. everything else, they'll let him -- that's what's most associated with him. he's willing to fight for it. more than anybody on -- >> what are you hearing about where the battle lines are being drawn amongst republicans with thchlt i me this. what kind of reaction are you hearing about the wake. >> i think there is some in the base of the

backs of immigration. whatever you want to describe it in your point of view there. but one of this issue of tighter immigration control. they do want to see this. the leadership of the party does worry about the political ramifications of it. in fact, we're have reporting right now that says the president may rescind the protection for undocumented immigrants who are brought here as children. that is something that leaders of the party fear, that are going to send hispanic americans away in droves, but the base of donald trump's movement does not want to see these protections kept in there. >> all come circle back around to the deep divide. t

to receive sommar savings of up to $4,500. all eyes on hurricane harvey, land fall expected later tonight. the other impacting parts of texas, looking here at live pictures, coming in from corpus christi, heavy rain, storm surge. >> looks nasty. amelia is -- amelia draper is near houston, as people get last-minute things at the grocery store before harvey hits. let's start with doug kamerere to break down the timing. >> the timing over the next hour or so, the eye wall, the outer portion starting to come on shore right now. let's take a look, this is the latest advisory as of 5:00. this storm continues to strengthen. it's 125 miles per hour and that was the latest advisory as of 5:00. but i would not be surprised to

see a new issuance here because we're just had a war and excessive wind warning around the corpus christi area winds 115 and 145 miles per hour. that's around the corpus christi area, and you can see, that storm moving very close. it's also looking like over the last half hour or hour, that's starting to slow down. that will be devastating for the koes sta koe sta costal areas here. take a look at the current winds, 75 miles an hour, this is around the naval air station, 75, that, of course, corpus christi at 56, tropical storm forced winds to the north and west. the strongest winds will be right in this area and down towards the corpus christi region, up towards the sea drift area. we're seeing the potential for some tropical storm forced

winds, as far north as the san antonio, speaking of the houston area, that is where amelia draper is. she got in there just this afternoon and is live for us right now just to the north of the houston area. amelia, i know you're going to be traveling a little bit going farther in to the storm's path. >> exactly, so basically we're landed at the airport, we're have a rental car, we're stocked up on supplies, lots of water just in case. we're haven't really encountered strong winds here yet, all of that is going to start to move in over night tonight. the biggest concern in houston and the galveston area, as you were talking about, is going to be extremely heavy rain fall over long time period. we're here under a flood warning through tuesday and i think that will be extended further, but folks here are preparing, if they're coming here and getting groceries, they have a good handle on the forecast. they know this storm is going to sit here. once the rain arrives, it's going to rain for days and days and days. you can see some video showing some water.

they were completely out of another store did place a two pallet limit on the water. we've seen lots of folks going in and out. just loading his car up with everything you can think of. fun items for his kids, but then a lot of serious items, as well, like a lot of water. people here are saying, when it rains a little bit in houston, the city flooding is terrible. so they're getting ready for about 25 inches of rain fall, that's going to start to move in later this evening. one of the all-time worst storms ever and it hit around the same areas. this one can be worse. from corpus christi, this is where a tornado watch is and one tornado warning right now, we're had a tornado confirmed. storm surge also a big threat right off -- upwards of three, to as much as 12 feet of water making its way inland as we're

there changed since you you can prepare as much as you want, i'm not sure that there's anything you can do if you get that much rain in that amount of time. you're right, people have moved to higher ground, that's the good news. some who have decided to ride this thing out they've got provisions to last two weeks about electricity. that's probably a good estimate, once the wind comes in and does its damage, the rain is going to continue, as we're talk about for the next several days, so the powerlines will be down, getting in to repair those or fix them, can't do that until the water is gone. it's going to take some time and be a mess here for the next several days, if not weeks, jim. >> you mentioned evacuations, would you say most people are

we love it! >> corpus christi texas where va lun tear e vax wagss are underway and hurricane harvey is bearing down on the texas gulf coast. texas' governor declared state of disaster in 30 counts and hundreds of national guard men and women are rescued. more than 700 people have been evacuated from corpus christi to san antonio. they've been taken on buses and authorities say this could be a rain event for days. a major concern here, potentially, catastrophic storm surge.

>> now here in have only been some voluntary e vax wa vak wags -- evacuations. a lot of people have decided to stay in town. we're saw a sign on a business just down road here that said open until all the letters on this sign blow off. flooding dangers, especially in low-lying areas, could be incredibly dangerous. we'll have more coming up tonight on nbc nightly news. we'll be talking with folks here and bringing you the very latest. >> looks like folks are taking it seriously. we'll see somebody out there in a body surfing or, you know, trying to surf their way and having fun with it. the wind is going to be the

impack, the storm surge biggest impact first before we'reet take a live look out there, you can see, remember, folks this is the gulf of mexico. this is not the atlantic ocean. you do not see waves very often in the gulf. they are right there, storm surge searing upwards. it's expected to be under 9 feet of water. right now you can see that storm close. but notice, it's really not moving much at all. the latest advisory had it moving at about 10 miles per hour, but it looks like it's slowing just a little bit and has been continuing to strengthen here. you look at just how far away it is, the current -- just looked at it, it's about ten miles offshore, the eye wall. you can see the eye wall right here, look at the latest winds, around 75 miles an hour inside the town. 56 degrees -- 56 miles per hour there and 44, back towards the county area. we're continue to see these winds on the increase, corpus christi just put out what's

called an excessive w warning. they're expecting winds of 115 to 145 miles an hour over the next couple of hours. they're expecting tornado like damage in this area as the storm comes across. here is the impact tonight. storm surge flooding from the corpus christi area all the way up towards shoe ston. winds to 125 miles an hour and power outages likely, one of the latest -- generated upwards of a million people expected to be without power from this storm over the next couple of days. here is the storm from another vantage point. here it is moving and then it just kind of sits here, only about ten miles off the coast, right around the corpus christi area, hurricane warnings in effect. we'll be watching this one for days. it may stay in that area, all the way through next thursday and friday and i had us tracking harvey for the labor day holiday. it may not come here at all now and that means most of the labor day looking pretty good. i am, however, tracking another
