meteorologist lauryn ricketts is tracking its path but we start with meteorologist amelia draper live in houston at minute maid park. what are you seeing? >> we're five minutes away from the park. there are numerous flash flood warnings for the houston greater area throughout the day today and the upcoming week. not only that but we're under a tornado watch. now, we were driving around and we are seeing flooding in widespread areas. no widespread flooding yet but you can see where water is starting to collect, it is getting deep. you can notice the road starting to flood over. officials urnging people to be cautious. this texas talking about a gun show on the hypighway there, it important to remember it fill up

we saw 6 to 9 inches of rain, another 4 to 8 today, tomorrow and will continue monday, tuesday, wednesday, likely pull away on thursday. the track of the rain has changed. overall the rainfall has not changed for houston area. we're talking 15 to 30 inches of rainfall, which is going to be catastrophic for this area. another live report coming up at 9:15. when you look at the radar, where we are in the storm system, we have outer bands. we'll have very heavy rainfall moving through. might sit here a few hours, moving out, get a break. a heavy band move back into the area. that also brings the concern, like i said, for some tornadoes. a tornado warning just to the north of us this morning right now. we're dealing with on and off heavy reyna band moving in. rainfall back here. when we set up 30 minutes ago it was absolutely pouring.

coming up in about 15 minutes. lauryn back at home, a totally different story. but again here it's just kind of been amazing to see folks. a lot of folks educated on the forecast. >> that's good especially after we saw what happened with hurricane sandy and other hurricanes. the galveston coast, corpus christi, they are used to hurricanes all the time. so i'm glad people took warning with this one considering it happened and intensified so quickly making landfall last night as a category 4 actually twice just about 10:00. can you see where amelia was, just on the outer bands right there. she was at minute maid park, moved out of minute made park, the home of the astros, moved out of there to find flooding in the low-lying areas. look at these light bands going by. that's going to be the case. she's going to be hitting a heavy one probably here in the next 30 minutes or so. maybe you'll get her for that

the heavy rain concentrated around victoria, going down here towards seadrift. again, she also said about the tornado watches, i wanted to ask her if they were having tornadoes in houston. we did see there was one tornado in houston so far, one in galveston as the overnight hours were coming to an end. i'll have to ask her about that. another thing that we're worried about besides tornadoes are the storm surge, the flooding. this storm surge with the winds rushing onshore bringing that water into the cities. it's going to have nowhere to go. greater than maybe a foot above the ground in areas. there's so many inlets in here right around victoria, coming through corpus christi that we can't see on the map. again, they are going to be dealing with this for months to come. look at the output of rain this they are going to see here, 15 to 30 inches in victoria alone. my last update i got was just about an hour ago. they have already seen 16 1/2 inches of in

that total. even out to new orleans are they going to get a good deal of rain in that area. this storm is just going to sit and hang out. it's not going to have anything to steer it. again, even by thursday it is still -- next thursday still tropical storm force winds at 35 miles an hour. it is just going to hang out right around here all the way through mid next week. now update on the weather coming our way. we've got another little system we're watching off the southeast of florida. if you're headed to the beaches you want to pay attention to the forecast. the forecast for us coming up, guys. >> lauryn, we'll check in with you in a few minutes. as can you imagine there are a lot of people paying attention to harvey. >> katy blakeney joins us with conditions from corpus christi. >> a restless night for those that stayed in corpus christi and riding out hurricane harvey. of course the hurricane

landfall around 10:00. since then it's a category 1 hurricane. the winds have died down but today the big threat will be the flooding. if you look behind me here can you seat businesses boarded up. some of them without power. about 160,000 people without power in corpus christi this morning. we are in one of the few pockets of the city where some businesses still have power. of course residents here breathing a sigh of relief because they did not take the brunt of harvey. that came in the town of rockport about 30 miles northeast of the city here. city officials still urging people do not leave homes. there are a number of power lines and trees down around the city. of course the big concern days the flooding. they are warning of catastrophic flooding. we will be here to cover the very latest with hurricane harvey. in corpus christi i'm katy blakey, back to you. >> thank you, katy, while we are far from the storm in d.c., you still might feel the e

national average $2.35 but prices could jump by $0.25 by labor day if harvey impacts a refinery. in 2005, an increase overnight. a lot of gasoline stored. the biggest issue will be if flooding hurts refiners ability to send out gas and bring in crude oil. >> some of the most fragile some of the most fragile texas residents are riding out hurricane harvey hundreds of miles away from home. at least 10 critically sick babies transported by air from a hospital in corpus christi to cook children's medical center in ft. worth. medical officials say they don't normally move babies this fragile but the storm made it a life or death situation. >> reporter: the problem keeping them there, the ventilators they are on, lifesaving ventilators would not be able to be maintained without electricity. >> some of the babies weighed less than a pound. four planes each carried one or

time right now is 9:09. cleanup continues to get overturned tractor-trailer off the inner loop of the beltway. the driver fell asleep behind the wheel here and crossed the median. it happened before 2:00 in the morning on old georgetown road. police say the driver was thrown from the truck but is thankfully expected to be okay. >> aetna doing damage control after the health care company mailed envelopes to thousands of people revealing their hiv status. 12,000 letters went out

filling prescriptions for hiv medications. this was clearly visible through the envelopes. the aids law center from pennsylvania is demanding the company change its practices. aetna has apologized saying the mistake was unacceptable. >> all right. let's turn our attention back to hurricane harvey as we continue to monitor its path. we have seen it make landfall overnight. it was a category 4 storm when it hit the coast, now down to category 1 storm but it's the rain and storm surge, which is expected to have the biggest impact yeah, i just saved a whole lot of money by swhuh.ing to geico. we should take a closer look at geico...

this is a violation of u.n. sanctions prohibiting north korea from launching missiles-of-missiles or conducting nuclear tests. all missiles appear to be short range missiles and these images were broadcast over north korea's state television today. they show leader kim jong-un meeting with military officials at what a news agency calls a target striking contest. of course. we're monitoring the latest response to hurricane harvey from president trump. you can see him right here walking to marine one. he's currently at camp david monitoring the storm. in a tweet the president said he signed a disaster declaration for texas, which will free up federal assistance. white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders says the president will try to make it to texas early next week. >> all right. let's check back in, as the sun starts to come up in texas and we get a better idea of damage. the texas coast hammered with powerful winds and ocean surges sure to cause damage

surge with a look at the storm live in galveston. good morning, sarah. >> good morning, guys. you know, hurricane harvey already breaking records as the strongest storm to hit texas in nearly half a century. when it made landfall it was a category 4. it has since been downgraded to a category 1. winds in galveston have dropped to 30 miles an hour. make no mistake, this is still a catastrophic storm as this rain steadily continues. we're expecting 15 to 30 inches across southeast texas. some areas, believe it or not, isolated areas, could see up to 40 inches. we're expecting to see widespread flooding. as the sun has come up, crews are able to go out and begin to assess the damage. we're hearing rockport, a coastal city of 10,000 people, who is really at the center of this hurricane, we know of a

collapsed. about ten people injured there. another home collapsed with people trapped there. these are just the initial reports. we expect to be seeing more serious pictures and hearing more serious reports as the morning goes on. meanwhile focus is also shifting to houston, the nation's fourth largest city already flood prone and the national weather service has begun issuing flash flood warnings for that area. we are told we could see roads and neighborhoods in houston inundated by floodwaters as early as tonight. back to you. >> all right. nbc sarah dallof live in galveston, texas. thanks so much, sarah. just imagine being on a cruise ship and being told you can't get off with all this going on. that's what happened to 20,000 vacationers stuck at sea with harvey. houston chronicle reports four ships set to dock at galveston were turned away. three carnival expected to reroute to new orleans,th

it's unclear what a royal caribbean ship planned to do. i have tape a fair amount of cruises. i cannot imagine what that would be like if you were actual hi stuck out there on the water just trying to deal with all that. when it gets a little bit rocky those boats can go up and down. dealing with a hurricane -- >> sea sick out there. >> my stomach is turning thinking about it. thinking about this hurricane just kind of intensified out of nowhere. harvey downgraded. now all of a sudden they look at it as of last thursday, the strongest hurricane to hit the u.s. coast since early 2000. again, category 4 making landfall twice, just before midnight last night. let's go ahead and talk about the hurricane out there. get to amelia outside of minute maid park out of houston. this is 20 miles south of

brunt of this storm. i do have some areas that are right along the coast that have already seen over 6 feet of floodwater in terms of what happened with storm search in that area. we have that tornado watch. for the northeastern portion of it. that quadrant always seems -- it's just the way the hurricane is set up, but that is generally always the strongest part of it. that's where we're we're looking where the tornado watch goes out through houston. i did see reports of a tornado in houston as well as galveston. storm surge all the way from galveston down south into mexico. south of corpus christi. 9 to 12 feet. that wind is going to continue to push that water from the g f gulf. look at these outlets there. with additional rainfall as well, 15 to 30 inches, storm surge, a lot of

i do believe we have amelia draper on the ground out there outside of houston watching it. amelia, what do you see right now? >> reporter: well, lauryn, a steady rain, winds not a big concern. it's all about the flooding. yesterday when we got into town we stopped at the grocery store. the first place we stopped was completely out of large bottles of water. the second place we went to had a limit. each customer bought two pallets of water. we saw maybe a couple going in and separately buying in total four pallets of water to stock up. residents heard the message the forecast is going to be catastrophic. we also talked to a lot of folks last night when we had some power outages start. they simply made the decision to get out of town. a lot of folks in the galveston area. to give you guys an idea, we're situated, our hotel south of houston. we're about 10 miles away from galveston. today we had about a 30-minute ride from

driving around we you a areas like this where we are we are seeing minor flooding. folks able to get around just fine. be cautious of hydiydro planing. talking to residents in the houston area, they said the city really has difficulty dealing with any amount of rain, let alone 15 to 30 inches of rain that are in the forecast. throughout date today we're going to continue to be in and out of the outer bands of harvey. what that means heavy rainfall. at some times. also the concern for some tornadoes. we're going to be under a tornado watch during the afternoon hours. we're going to stay safe. i'm going to say quickly thanks to everybody back in d.c. for wishing myself and beth my photographer the best safety out here and we are keeping that in mind. but you're enjoying a great weekend. >> amelia, i'm so sorry. i know, you

but it's nice to be down there and make it back because i know we have that flooding. one thing i want to mention about the flooding, they are getting yearly average of rain. even more than that, what they are used to seeing in houston, galveston, southeast texas you know it's dry. they are getting a lot of rain. really what they are concerned about people driving after. once it slows down, people will get out, and i do believe there will be a lot of water rescues. this is until thursday, not moving. that's why we're concerned about it. here at home we're not seeing anything right now. in fact, a beautiful day out there. it's going to be beautiful into sunday. we do have some changes early next week. if you like summer i have 90s on the ten-day forecast. temperatures 60s and 70s. a little crisp. 81 for your high today. get out and maybe do yard work even if you're planning afternoon
