person who was inside was not able to make it out. in houston, a woman drown after she got out of her car stuck in high water. flooding is expected to be a concern the next several days. and people in texas are not only dealing with the tropical storm but also tornadoes have been report overnight. a twister tore through missouri city outside of houston. cell phone video you are looking at there, which is 30 miles north of there, shows what looks to be a funnel cloud that has touched down. >> flooding becoming a huge concern for tens of thousands of people. houston's hobby airport closed because of water on the runways. as you can see, people have been trudging through streets overflowing. emergency crews have been working overnight to help drivers trapped in

meteorologist somara theodore and amelia reporting on the storm as it unfolds. >> we are going to go to nbc's sarah dollup who is live for us in galveston. good morning, sarah. >> reporter: good morning, adam and megan. as you mentioned, wide-spread flooding across the southeast in the last 24 hours, galveston has received 24 inches of rain. places in houston reporting an excess of 20 inches there. the coast guard now bringing in five helicopters to perform urban search and rescues in houston. they say they have received some 300 calls. they are offering advice to people to seek the highest ground in their homes but not to go into the attic, because first

them and then second they run the risk of getting trapped in their homes. one person got out of her car and was swept away by floodwaters. so they are asking not for you to travel if possible today. please stay where you are safe. meanwhile, 20,000 cruise ship passengers remain stranded at sea, and there are boats waiting for conditions to improve so they can dock at the port of galveston. wide-spread devastation and flooding and the rain is not over yet. harvey is a slow-moving system, unlike other hurricanes. it's only expected to travel about 60 miles in the next few days, and it's expected to dump rain all the way. adam and megan. >> all right, thank you, sarah. let's turn to somara

tracking now and it's not going anywhere. >> no, it's not. it's nearly stationary moving to the south-southwest at about amile-per-hour. this storm is not over. it's going to be sticking around through the middle of the week. take a look at the expected rainfall totals. we are talking 15 to 30 inches, and there are some areas that could see 40 inches of rain. this is really unprecedented. >> thank you. we are working for you on the ground there in texas. >> amelia draper has been in the greater houston area over the last couple days. amelia, you have been getting a firsthand look at the damage and flooding there, and i have to imagine that the rain continues to c

>> reporter: it was incredible last night and this morning. you are probably wondering why am i not wearing a hood? it's like, why does it matter, you are going to be wet -- my photographer is laughing. but in all sincerity, this is a catastrophic flood. right now we are southeast of the city's center of houston, and behind me is state highway 3, and houston is a very low lying area. there's so much cement in the city it has a difficult training and can you find that article on my twitter page. right now in this area we have flash flood emergencies, so typically back in d.c. we only talk about flash flood watches and warnings, and that

to another step here. overnight tonight we picked up 15 inches of rain here when it's all said and done around thursday we could see the number doubled or tripled. a lot of people are having difficulty grasping what 30 to 40 inches of rain might look like. let's say we get 30 inches of rain here, that would be 400 inches of snow or 33 feet of snow. imagine the d.c. area getting 33 feet of snow. that's what this area is getting here in houston. last night we had an interesting night. we were trying to get back to the hotel and the water was rising too rapidly. we got safely stranded half a mile away. you could see the water overflowing. we saw a nice sense of community. a mother and her child got stranded to the hotel and others pulled together to get them safe a

well. you can pull that up on my facebook and twitter pages. we will be out here all morning and in the evening. we will stick around monday and tuesday. somebody was asking me, are you going to drive around the houston area today and check it out? at least for this morning, i would not do it even if you were going to pay me $3 million. the flood something unheard of. roads are closed everywhere. people inside of the hotel staring at the weather forecast with their mouths wide open. it's hard to put into words. if you can grasp anything, think of 33 inches of snow piling up in d.c. >> stay safe. thank you for that great reporting. while the storm is far from over, one thing is clear. everybody in that area will need a lot of help. >> the american red cross volunteers from our area are headed down there right now to help any way they can.

with a look at what volunteers are doing. >> reporter: calmer scene here but no less urgent. >> reporter: if you are in the mist of a storm, this is like seeing the calvary. tell me what you are going to be doing today. >> today we will try to get ourselves down to texas. we will, once we get down there, use this vehicle to feed people. we can put 200 meals of hot food in here and serve individuals as they need it. we also have cleaning supplies so people can clean up. that's the kind of thing we do once we get one of these vehicles down there. >> that's the thing people don't think about. but in a disaster, you need this. let's look. i liken this

truck because you will feed people out of it, but it's much more serious because people are in die nere need of help. >> we are helping the first responders. these are all containers that keep food hot for hours, and that allows us to serve out of these meals to people, to individuals, down in the area where we are going to be going. we do this all over the country. right now there are about 200 vehicles, red cross vehicles just like this one coming down to texas to try and help out. >> you have a long drive ahead of you, as well. you have to plan your route so you don't become part of the problem yourself and get stranded? >> yes, we will pay attention to that, and thank you for reminding me. >> reporter: the red cross also

we are seeing cloud coverage out there with sun breaking through though. the bigger picture, though, does show a disturbance along the carolina coast. i think it's going to ride up the coast as a low pressure and that's going to impact the mid atlanta bringing us our next chance for rain for tuesday and wednesday. here's a look at the future weather. fast-forwarding to 8:00 p.m., this is back towards the i-80 corridor, and they could see a few sprinkles. maybe a lot lower cloud coverage. we move into monday morning and wake up to a good deal of sunshine and then the clouds billow in and then the moisture after that. around 3:00 or 4:00 look for isolated shower activity on monday. the monday evening commute and not the morning

he seems to be scared. doesn't know what is going on. hurricane harvey is getting ready to barrel down through here and he just kind of doesn't want to leave. >> if you have not seen this one on social media yet you probably will today. a houston taxi driver said as hurricane harvey approached this hawk got into his cab and refused to leave. nbc news spoke with the driver on the phone, and while its

difficult to verify, but many appear the wings look to be hurt. somebody managed to snap this picture of a dog carrying his own food. the dog's name is otis and he was trotting along to a group of people outside cleaning up. he was want to go eat. >> he said, yeah, the storm is here but it's dinnertime. let's go. new life is surfacing above the floods and the destruction. >> yeah, we have seen certainly so much of it in texas, but a mom in corpus christi welcomed a baby boy during the height of the storm. the baby, seven pounds and 18 inches long. as for his name, guess what? harvey was the

the time is 9:30 on this sunday morning. two people now dead because of hurricane harvey. one person killed after a house fire in rockport where the hurricane made landfall on friday night. and then in houston a woman drawn when she got out of her car in high water. and then a tornado in cypress, texas. the national weather service is working to confirm if that was a tornado. but then a tornado did touch down in missouri city which is outside of houston. no deaths or injs

volunteers from the red cross in our area are working to help those affected by hurricane harvey. they opened already 15 shelters for texas residents and more assistance is on the way. right now we are following the disastrous flooding right now happening along the gulf coast of texas. >> so much is going on with the storm. it's not over yet. we have complete team coverage. we want to start with sarah dalloff in texas where the winds and rains from kept coming. >> reporter: yeah, 24 inches in 24 hours here in galveston, as people take stock not only now of the flooding but also the damage left behind because of the hurricane. in houston the situation

some areas receiving more than 20 inches of rain. the 911 system there so overwhelmed and overloaded right now that they are asking people not to call until their lives are in imminent dangers. hundreds of water rescues overnight. the coast guard has their urban rescue team in the city right now, and that's five helicopters responding to some 300 calls and are requesting additional air support to come in. harvey is only expected to travel some 60 miles in the next few days dumping water all the way. adam and megan. >> sarah dollup live in texas for us. thank you. we just

helicopter, but those helicopters that somara is talking about, i suspect where we are positioned and towards where they are flying, they are responding to those emergency calls right now. where we are right now is along state highway 3. to give you an idea, what you are looking at right now is an overflow area where water is collecting. it was a nightmare tonight, flooded roads, wide-spread flooded roads everywhere, and we are starting to see it improve a little bit but officials are urging folks to stay off the roads. we are not just seeing flooding but there's a tornado warning 25 miles southwest of where we are. every time we have been onair since we touched ground here in the houston area, we do these live shots. it doesn't look like it's raining that hard. it might

to moderate rain out there, and then as soon as we get off the air and we try to find something and it's an downpour we are dealing with, flash flooding and that kind of thing. it's ironic. overnight we were dealing with two tornado warnings where we were stationed. but the story here, guys, continues to be the flooding. we saw at least ten inches of rain and today we will see that, and more will continue throughout the week. >> so amelia you have been talking to residents down there. what is their reaction to all the devastation? do they have a game plan as to what they will do over the next few days if the rain just stays over where they are? >> reporter: a lot of the residents we talked to did have a game plan. i will say in galveston, it seemed they were passe' about the weather forecast, and they had dry time and they were out and about thinking the worst of the storm is over. but when we landed

up on supplies. here, where we are southeast city center of houston, a lot of the folks here were prepared and are ready to sit out the storm and that's what emergency officials want them to do here. >> i spent time there in houston, and there's so much concrete and there's not surface where the water can drain, and so that's one of the big issues with that city getting that amount of rain, right? >> reporter: yeah, exactly. i mentioned this earlier, adam, and i know you love this kind of stuff, too. i was reading an interesting article last night about how the city was built-up and how quickly it was built-up and where things are stationed and with all the concrete here it makes it difficult for the water to drain. this morning we were walking around to s

today is basically a replica of yesterday. headed out the door, i know a lot of us off to a brisk start. a few of us like to call it refreshing. temperatures around 70 degrees, and it feels like 70, and we have the wind out of the northeast, and it feels how it actually is. here's four things you need to know. harvey is a tropical storm, however still packing a punch expected to dump nearly 40 inches of rain along the texas coast here. here at home, a beautiful sunday ahead. tuesday, maybe a soggy one. summer then makes a comeback. we have the satellite on here and we do have clouds. the sun is breaking through as we head throughout the day. take a look at the big picture right now. we are seeing a disturbance down along the carolina coast. as that skirts up the eastern seaboard, the

center has a 48% chance of development. as you head through your sunday, we stay dry. we will get a lot of sunshine out here. we are going to see lower clouds. maybe a few sprinkles out towards the blue ridge out along the corridor there. the onset of moisture will bring us a chance for showers monday afternoon. that's when you will see a chance for rain. nationals take on the mets today. it's quintessential weather for a game. showers and storms in there that extends into your wednesday from tuesday. temperatures will be in the 70s. we will then start to pivot up towards 84 degrees on thursday. then by the weekend, the holiday weekend, we could get to about 90 degrees over the weekend from this view. it seems as though the forecast is dry over the weekend for your labor day holiday, but we will keep an eye on that. we could tra
