but so many impacted here and displayed from homes. we're going to have the story of one woman and her young son here at the hotel. coming up. and we continue to watch heavy rain moving through houston right now. again, this is uncharted tear tear in this area and pretty much the entire united states. we'll talk about this and let you know exactly what's going to happen with the remnants of this that could impact your labor day weekend. the governor of texas says they are measuring the rain these days in feet not inches. and tropical storm harvey could dump an additional 2 feet of rain in the area in the coming days. we begin this evening in the storm team 4 weather area to get you caught up on the remnants of harvey. this catastrophic storm. two people confirmed dead including a woman in houston who died saturday night

first responders and volunteers making thousands of rescues. and we're hearing a lot of stories of heroism like the sheriff of harris county who jumped into 8 feet of water to rescue a man. the convention center in houston is being turned into a megashelter. they're evacuating the most critical patients at the hospital, ask it could take days to get everybody into a safe area. and gas prices are expected to rise. there's no word when the refineries in texas will be able to reopen. all right, so let's begin now. last time we saw at 6:00, we had this new track that's come in and pretty much put everything in a worst-case scenario. how does the new track look? >> same deal. the eye is going to

into the gulf waters, which is only going to pule it a little bit more. let's go ahead and take a look at our maps and show, yeah, this heavy rain. this dry air was circulating along this and rolling right into houston and pushing some of that heavy rain and the moisture just through the northeast. look at this. we still had some heavy bands and heavy rain moving through eastern parts of texas. and we could even some heavier rain lining up just along the area of lake charles and louisiana. of course they've got those flash flood warnings right there. but hurricane harvey continues to knock a punch through the region. these are the estimated rain totals sent friday. and you can see this bulls eye in houston over 15 inches. we had to call our weather service provider who makes these

we had a graphic to make sure it wept up 15 inches. because, again, this is water not snow we're measuring, obviously. so again lots of rain falling in that area. amelia draper has been down there since friday. she's been meeting some amazing people. earlier today she met a father who carried his son on his back and through those raging flood waters. listen to this. >> our family's lives was in jeopardy. >> why do you think your smile is so big today? >> because i'm happy that i lived. >> i'm happy you lived, too, buddy. >> and of course amelia draper continues now with our coverage with even more amazing stories of survival. >> reporter: here in webster, texas thankfully the rain ticking a bit of a break for the

that's going to allow some of those flood waters to recede. good news there. but earlier this morning it was still atrocious here. we ran into one employee lucy who was understandably beside herself. she her and young son had decided to wait it out at their home. we did what we could. we did a facebook live and you helped share the word. >> please come and rescue -- rescue my husband and my kid. >> lucy understandably distraught. her husband decided to wait out the storm in their one story home in houston with their 2-year-old son. their home started taking on water. adding to the angst is a terrible tragedy that happened not too long ago. >> i live next to the bayou. three years ago we had a flood. not as much as it is

lost my 9-year-old son. and now my husband is inside of my house with my son, 2-year-old toddler. and i just don't want to lose another son or my husband. it's very hard for me because i work in a hotel taking care of our guests, and right now they're coming in situations that, you know, they're going through the same thing. and we never, never thought that this was going to be getting worse. >> reporter: lucy told me the last time she could reach her husband, water was up to the mattress in the bedroom. >> he can't right now open doors because water would come in easily. we really need help right now. >> reporter: and thankfully the story has a happy ending. i did hear from lucy on facebook that her husband and son were rescued.

lot of this throughout the area. and of course amelia is going to continue to be down there. she's working really hard in houston. i talked to her by phone. she's going to be down there updating us. i know last time we talked to her she hasn't eaten in 24 hour. she found one place to eat and now she'll be getting some shut eye. keep it here because we're have historic flooding. as for our area tonight, we are looking at nice conditions, very cool conditions. but we've got some rain on the way. so we're going to be talking about that coming up. >> thank you, appreciate it. the power of social media doing some good work tonight. new this evening the governor of texas will be touring the damage. the president tweeted quote, historic rainfall in houston and all over texas. floods are unprecedented and more rain

spirit of the people is incredible. thanks. agencies across the country are heading to texas to provide relief. plus a fair fax county swift boat rescue left today, and they're going to help with rescues. truckloads of equipment and supplies are being taken down to texas. logistics communication and planning are handled at another plan center. the flooding conditions in houston are rapidly deteriorating tonight. a reporter from our sister station has the latest of the catastrophic flooding situation. >> reporter: the situation goes from bad to worse here in houston. take a look at south freeway. it looks like a lake. but it's not. take a look at that sign. it's supposed to be for 15'9"

spencer. lots going on here. what can you tell us about the scene here, darcy. >> reporter: erica, i can tell you just a short time ago i was able to speak to a woman who knows two men who went missing here in the potomac river tonight. both of them have been found. she says that the two men who are very close childhood friends were hanging up on the aqua dock that's right over here. one of them decided to jump into the river, ran into trouble at this point. his best friend jumped into the river to try to help but also went under. that prompted a massive search effort. again, both of them have been taken to the hospital. one in critical condition, the second his condition is unknown. >> i was actually below it.

great day tomorrow. all right, i want to switch gears and go back to tropical storm harvey. the situation dire as surrounding serb,s as more rain is forecasted for over night and for the next couple of days as nbc's jay gray reports, the state's governor is now sending in 3,000 national and state guard troops to help. >> reporter: communities cut off. homes isolated, islands and neighborhoods swallowed by flood waters. as the race to save thousands in houston grows more desperate by the hour. >> i would have been asleep-in that water if no one would have weet the door down. >> reporter: a helicopter pull these redsdants to sate. while on the ground, despite the warnings drivers still challenge the rising waters. this one rescued by bystanders who saw the dangerous situation unfold. >> i

and asked her did she need help or whatever. and she said yes. so i got one of my rescue team buddies and asked her to stay calm and we were going to get her. >> reporter: many stayed safe with only the things they could carry. and today people in the fourth largest city are struggling to find room. >> because of the widespread flooding that has taken place over the last day or so, there are a number of people that don't have a place to go. >> reporter: the convention center downtown has been converted into a massive shelter. but there's concern it just won't be enough with more rain on the way. jay gray, nbc news, houston. >> all right, we want to go back to storm team 4. with this new track not helping.

going back out to the gulf for next couple of days? >> that means it reintensifies for just a little bit, which they don't need. this thing it's just sitting there and spinning at least through next week, or amid this week, wednesday, thursday. so these heavy bands are going to continue to feed from the really warm gulf water. we're talking 89, 90 degrees is that water down there. so only fume for the fire. they've got tornado watches up, flash flood warnings obviously up there. we have some dry area trying to circulate in here and pushing this up to the north and east. but, again, we're going to have to deal with more flooding. these are the rainfall estimates from friday at noon. again, a lot of heavy rainfall in that area. we're talking about over 15,
