flood water. >> our worst fears have been realized. >> reporter: the realization for so many is so difficult. isolated by the water and unsure of what's next. nbc news, houston. >> many families in texas what's next is a long road to recovery. some people are coming back to their homes to find a trail of damage and expensive repairs. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia draper is near houston where neighbors are helping neighbors rebuild. has the rebuilding begun yet? >> reporter: it has. we are here in tony hodges house. take a look at what we are dealing with here. look at the floors just covered in mud. water still in the house. her family telling me they are throwing everything away that touched water. they are taking photographs so they have that for insurance purposes. you can see just dripping in here. we are already s

that mildew coming in. this is going to be months and months of cleanup. we talked to her family and the word continues to be how wonderful it is to see people here coming together. >> we have been stuck here for three days. people have been wonderful giving directions and telling what stores are open, lending fresh eggs or whatever we can do. most of us did keep power. the difference is this was a rain event. we had like ike we had wind and a lot of damage to this neighborhood during ike. it was primarily wind. this was very unusual. >> reporter: take a look. this is just outside. this is about three feet high. this is water that

basically to my hips in her house for days. she is very thankful that her family is here already starting to help her cleanup. i want to take you out to the road. we have seen the water go down today. the sunshine finally out today. i don't know where it is in the skype but you can see some breaks in the clouds right now. it's warm and humid out here. and we are just seeing the wonderful sense of community here. then you go and you look to see people here driving through the streets seeing if anyone needs help. checking out the areas and look at how deep this water still is outside of her home here. when you look at my boots this has gone down i would say probably about six inches when we got here. i couldn't walk out in the street because of how deep the water was. here we saw tremendous flash flooding on saturday night. and folks dealing with the impacts from harvey here for months, guys. >> looking around in that home that you have just shown us, it

the amount of work that they are going to have to do to rebuild and live in their home again. people are still staying strong, aren't they? >> reporter: absolutely. the homeowner is no longer here. they are in there cleaning it out for her. we spoke with a couple who had divorced about the husband came back to help his ex wife cheen up her home because she needed that support. the people who haven't been impacted and family and friends in the area. that happened in the house, as well. >> people come together in extraordinary circumstances like these. thank you. the deadly storm prompted more

and it could impact our area later this week. doug, what is the latest track and timing now? >> it is still a tropical storm. to more of amelia's point. that is one home done thousands of times. thousands of homes have been damaged by harvey. harvey continues to damage homes into portions of louisiana when they continue to see extremely heavy rainfall and still not moving that much. the latest advisory came out at 5:00. it is moving at 8 miles per hour to the north. still providing tremendous amounts of rain right along the texas/louisiana border. this will be making its way our way. you can see the northern extent of the rain shield here. bringing the rain with it. first off beautiful weather tomorrow for most of the day. we have a slight chance of shower tomorrow. tracking harvey as it makes its way in friday into saturday.

on south dakota avenue in northeast d.c. one was treated at the scene. the other taken to the hospital. both are going to be okay. president trump is just back from the road trip to missouri to talk about tax reform. it has been a top priority for him and he is sending a clear warning now to congress about making it happen. working this story for us from capitol hill. >> reporter: republican leaders have said that tax reform is priority number one and after that rather dramatic failure of an obamacare repeal they want this as a legislative win. president trump said to members of congress a very strong message, do not mess this up. today president trump in missouri stopping in the show me state to show his support for tax reform. >> on a plan that is

army second lieutenant richard collins iii was days away from graduating and preparing for a future in the u.s. army. it all came to a tragic end. collins was stabbed to death on the university of maryland

campus back in may. today both schools held a moment of silence in his honor. police charged someone in his murder. students are promising to protect collins legacy. aimee cho is on the bowie state campus with that part of the story. >> reporter: new school year just started here at bowie state but today for one minute everything stood still. ♪ >> reporter: our hearts are still very, very heavy as we remember a tragedy. >> his life was taken because someone did not take the opportunity to get to know him. his life was taken because of the color of his skin. his life was taken because he decided to stand for what he believed in. >> reporter: for p

>> such an incredibly powerful ceremony. richard collins was just days away from graduation. live at bowie state aimee cho, news 4. we are working for you tonight tracking the crowd marching towards d.c. pictures from social media show day three on the road. the demonstrators were marching against white supremacy and protesting president trump's response to that violence. the crowd left charlottesville on monday. today they passed through ruckersville. they will arrive in d.c. september 6. two liquor store employees are recovering from serious burns after a bizarre attack in beltsville. police tell us a man walked into the store over the weekend and tossed a molotov cocktail at workers. chris gordon has more on what may have prompted it. >> reporter: iti

p prince george's county police officer stopped a man seen running out of this liquor store. the officer noted the man's clothes smelled like gasoline. he is being charged with attempted murder, assault and arson. >> apparently there had been some type of ongoing dispute between the people in the store and the suspect. >> reporter: sunday evening the suspect arrived carrying a lit molotov cocktail. he walked inside and threw it. it saet some on fire injuring to employees in the store and were transported to a hospital burn unit. one is still in serious condition and the other was treated and released. investigators say store surveillance video shows the attack. we asked to see the video but we were told it's evidence which cannot be made public at this time. many people who live near the

we know they are glad to see some sun coming out in texas. and now we're keeping an eye on how harvey is going to effect us. >> actually right now. we saw sunshine and cloud cover. that cloud cover coming courtesy of harvey in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere. not bringing rain just yet. show you what is happening temperature wise. 78 at the airport. 81 fredrick. a very nice afternoon out here on our wednesday. looking at a pretty nice night tonight. no rain out there with the exception

laray looking at a shower. no lightning with this. a little bit of down pour right on top. looking pretty good for the most part around the rest of the area now. a few showers to the west are not going to be impactful for us. remnants of harvey still a tropical storm making its way in towards louisiana. northern extent of the rain in. moving our way, for sure. it is starting to pick up speed although not that much in the way of speed. currently it is moving north northeast at only eight miles per hour and has tropical storm force winds. take a look where it is going through the memphis area and could bring them some flooding and move our way. i do not expect flooding in our area although some areas could pick up a half an inch to an inch into saturday. tomorrow first off mix of sun and clouds during the day tomorrow. notice a couple of showers in here around 5:00. by around 8:00 most showers out

the death toll rising from harvey as flood waters begin to recede. harvey is dumping rain in louisiana and evacuation efforts are underway there. >> we saw scene after s

families plucked out of the waters one by one and hoisted up to safety in a helicopter. meanwhile in houston the sun is out today but it is revealing the grim reality. 21 people are dead. among them two missing grand par parents and four grandchildren. so far 19,000 people have been rescued in texas alone. 32,000 still need shelter. houston's airports are back open tonight. many roads are still under water. and the country's largest oil refinery is shut down. that can mean higher gas prices here and across the country. and tonight there is an emerging health crisis from harvey after hospitals have been evacuated. people have been treated in make shift centers like this one. volunteer doctors and nurses are working around the clock to treat patients. >>

a lot of chronic illnesses, high blood pressure, many people working to give medications before they left. >> reporter: on nightly news tonight chief medical correspondent takes us inside some of these temporary medical centers. these scenes are unfolding more than 1,000 miles away. it's not uncommon for us to feel helpless watching them. there are ways we can all pitch in. in the immediate after math of an immense disaster like this one emergency experts say the most pressing needs are for blood donations and financial assistance. our nbc washington app has a list of things you can do from here to help. search harvey help. now to the shattering after effects of the crash of the uss john mccain. the destroyer collided back on august 21 near singapore. ten sailors were killed

news 4 learned his family is traveling up to dover, delaware today to accept his remains. he will be buried at arlington national cemetery. kevin bushel, a friend who never had the chance to say good bye posted a moving tribute to him. a family spokesman tells us he joined the navy soon after graduating from high school back in 2009. he worked his way up to the electronics technician second class position. his father told the baltimore sun that his son was a gentle soul who would bring home injured animals to nurse back to health. he was one of two sailors from maryland killed in that crash. timothy ecles jr. was just 23 years old. dozens of people giving up their day to find a missing husband and father of two. george di

a funeral today for the youngest victim in a heartbreaking tragedy. three girls stabbed to death inside a home and a relative confessed to the crime. >> the murder split families apart. loved ones tell tracee wilkins they hope today's surface will be a step towards healing. >> it's a sad tragedy that happened. >> reporter: hundreds gathered to say good bye. her brother told police he killed her in a devastating triple murder. >> to see a young child go i feel for the family. >> reporter: 6-year-old withers and her cousins who were visiting from out

boy, it is going to hurt to hear this. each of us wastes about $350 a year when we leave time on d.c. parking meters. it's even worse in other cities. a new yorker overpays by nearly $900 a year. in san francisco that number drops to just over $400. in los angeles it is about $380 a year. mark segraves explains why parking pains impact everyone even those who don't drive. >> while there is an added cost to looking for a parking space in downtown washington there are ways to avoid the cost and the hassle. and some of those ways can be right at your finger tips. it's something lots of people don't look forward

entire city was under water. officials fear people are still stranded inside their homes. we are going to keep an eye on this developing situation and bring you any rescues live right here on news 4. that's from a black hawk helicopter over beaumont. new video shows how quickly the flood waters can rise. this is time lapsed video from garage in houston as tropical storm harvey barrelled into texas. family who lived here put everything on tables and made sure the garage door was secure. that did not stop the flooding. water started pouring in around 2:00 a.m. sunday. by lunch time the suv was half way submerged. it took a day for the water to level off and then begin to go down. that's awful to see. much more on harvey tonight on news 4 nightly news with lester holt including dramatic rescues from the air

taken to safety. doug is back with more about our weather and how harvey is going to have an impact on us. >> little is kind of an under statement compared to what they are dealing with in texas and louisiana we are talking about that for days, weeks, probably years down there around the houston area and beaumont and port arthur, texas. we look towards our region we have seen cloud cover. these clouds courtesy of harvey. we are seeing clouds from harvey moving our way with sunshine. temperature at 78 degrees. 75 by 7:00. dropping to about 70 by about 11:00. looking okay. take a look at the radar. a couple of showers. one back here towards west virginia. the rest of us have been on the dry side. we stay dry for the most part into the day on friday. then we s
