a million dollars of his own money to harvey relief efforts. >> we are working for you with a look at just how harvey could be effecting our holiday weekend, but our team coverage beginning right now with jay gray in houston. hi jay. >> hey, wendy, susan, this is the unfortunate really here right now. so many homes just a week ago, families were going through their normal daily routines, much of that normal soaked and piled up here by the curve. it's become part of a difficult tragic daily routine. survivors pulled to safety in areas still under water and patients move from hospitals in the strike zone. over seven straight days, tens of thousands have been rescued in southeast texas and the effort is still far from over in neighborhoods where the water just won't go away. >> there is no

>> fema estimates 450 to 500,000 homes that have been effected by harvey. that's the latest live in houston, susan, wendy, back to you. >> thank you, jay, that woman summed it up physically and mentally exhausting. well, more first responders from our area are leaving their family it is to help in this harvey rescue effort. 40 members from the virginia national guard headed to texas right now. that group includes texas technicians and members of the dive team. terry has sent seven helicopters to that region. >> all of that rain from harvey has to go somewhere, this afternoon, we're tracking a new hurricane that's getting stronger. >> a storm team 4 chief meteorologistist doug kamererer early today someone described this thing coming out of africa has a monster. >> that's one portions of the central atlantic, that we'll be

all of our focus on harvey, it is moving our way. moving parts through memphis area. they are going to see flash flood warnings in effect, tornados, look at this ban right here, they have numerous tornado warning and there have been confirmed tornados into parts of mississippi. whole storm itself making its way our way, we'll see a much different day tomorrow and into the weekend, this will effect part of the holiday weekend, i'll show you which days are going to be the best days for the weekend. irma, hurricane irma, winds are now at 100 miles an hour, i wouldn't be surprised the next advisory comes out, this could have winds of 115, 120, could be category expected to be a category 4 as it nears the islands, does it hit the east coast, that's something we'll watch much more on this. a lot to talk about continuing in the weather, i'll see you back here in about ten minutes. >> thanks so much. >> one of the best things you can give to

either what we locate that person or we bring the suspect into custody, we'll get closer to what the motive is? >> a quick four-minute walk from the columbia heights metro, a man is shot and killed. the 42-year-old died from last night's shooting. megan fitzgerald to show you on the scene to show you how police are together. >> we're in the back ally of the 1,400 block. we talked to neighbors and they tell us it's just before 10:00 last night when they heard a ground of gunfire. when they looked outside their window, they tell us there was a man who collapsed, he was on his bicycle and he was shot several times. just to give you some perspective. take a look over here, we're talking yards away, people are in their homes, making dinner and just outside is a crime scene. now, of course, neighbors called 911, police arrived on the scene. they started investigating, that suspect took off. it's important to know that there is surveillance out there.

>> well, it's one of the most well-known charities in times of disaster that the red cross is not getting any support from facebook in the wake of hurricane harvey, instead social media giant is prompting its users to donate to another charity. it's not clear why facebook made this move. but some have criticized the red cross on spending too much. they defend its efforts saying 91 cents of every dollar goes directly to relief efforts. many people in texas are losing everything and forced to even give up their pets. >> some of those displaced pets will soon be looking for homes here in our area. news 4 justin fench explains what local shelters here need you to do now. >> if you're looking for it, listen to this. they need your help here at the rescue alliance, a whole crowd of pets are coming in from the houston area here to the humane

the north, it has nothing to do with harvey. we've got a cold front to the north, you can see a couple of showers associated with it. the big deal the colder air that's going to be behind it. and then we turn to harvey, you can see it spinning, some strong storms out ahead of it in towards the parts of the southeast. this storm system has the potential and his had -- tornado watch in the yellow. numerous warnings, i can see it right here there, we've seen a couple of tornados and damage in this area. it's flash flooding and a tornado threat in that region. eventually it moves to us. when does it do that. first, as i mentioned. we have the cold front, here it is to the north, 7:00 through the night. watch out, here you go around 10, 11:00. there are some showers coming through ahead of that front they push down to the south and bring in the northerly winds and really bring in some cooler numbers. tomorrow is going to be raw day across our region. we may get a mix of sun, a little b

sunshine count yourself lucky, i don't expect much of it. here comes harvey. here comes the rain from harvey, saturday morning, 9:00, most of this is light rain. i expect to see some of that light rain just about all day off and on on saturday, heaviest rain right now, looks like it will be dc to the south. some locations picking up over half an inch to the rain. there will be periods, still a good idea to take the umbrella. if you have plans to be out on saturday, outdoors. sunday is going to be the better day. if you're thinking what day may be better, going to be sunday. still seeing shower activity around the region. down there towards the beaches. if you're headed towards the beaches watch out. high of only 68. cloudy and cool. late day showers will become likely tomorrow night. it will be on the cool side. we're talking about another storm. it is irma. went from a tropical storm to hurricane quickly. now, take a look at it

the atlantic. look at the eye, i think this is a category 3 storm. the latest advisory, however, came out of the 11:00, the next one comes down, had winds of 100 miles. that's a category two, now, it's expected to become a category 4 hurricane as it makes it's way towards the island. the lesser antilles and possibly close to puerto rico. it could go to main and could go to texas, a lot to look at, guys, this is going to be 7 to 10 days of watching this. so i don't want you to take anything that you've heard, oh, it's going to hit the east coast, oh it's going to hit the gulf coast. we'll continue to watch this for you and i'll give you the latest as we continue to get here in the storm center. umbrellas, yeah, you'll need them. much nicer on sunday and monday, labor day, looking good. with more on what you can expect for your labor day weekend, lauren joins me at 4:45. >> thank you so much. new ta

getting ready to pay millions more of customers after it uncovered fake bake and credit card accounts. the bank looked at two more years of sales data going back to 2009. what they found wasn't pretty. an additional 1.5 million fake accounts, that brings the total number now to 3.5 million since the bank first acknowledged the issue last year. they have tried to rebound by scrapping the sales goal and changing, wells fargo plans to pay out an additional $3 million to impacted customers. >> new at 4:00, ready for a new iphone because apple is officially up to something. the tech giant set out invitations to its annual big iphone launch. it's a couple of weeks. most experts are expecting three new iphone models, maybe an iphone that doesn't have that home button we have to press. there could also be a new version of the apple watch, the

actor mark tweeted today that he has joined the dozens of people that are marching from charlottesville to the district. they're protesting the type of white supremacy that was on display at that violent rally earlier this month, and president trump's response to that violence. they left on monday, today is the largest stretch of their 100-mile journey. 18 miles is going to land them in culpepper at the end of today. they'll arrive here in washington on

>>. now, at 4:30, new video from the coast guard, crews taking an ax to the roof of a home, breaking in to rescue the people inside. this video is from beaumont texas, that city just lost its water supply, forcing the evacuation of a hospital earlier today. while in houston, door to door searches continue to make sure nobody is stuck in their homes. the federal government is promising to get people back on their feet. fema working on a plan to house tens of thousands who lost their homes and congress voting on a hurricane aid package, we think, by next week. here is a look at another water rescue today. in this case, 78-year-old matt was stuck in a tractor. you can see it right there, that became submerged in high water, fortunately, though, emergency crews got him just

boat and we hear he is doing okay. whur troy johnson is here with today's talk around town. we are all comparing this to katrina. we're hearing this is actually the largest u.s. rescue -- rescue effort by the red cross in u.s. history. what are your listeners saying. is it triggering a lot of katrina memories, as well. >> you hit it right on the head. 12 years ago we were locked in front of our televisions watching this amazing history unfold in front of us. a devastating history unfold in front of us. and, again, here we are in the same place. think about this fact. there's enough rain that has fallen on texas to fill the chesapeake bay. >> unbelievable. >> and we're talking about a swamp of land that will cover the distance between new york and boston, a huge area, so many people effected by this storm and listeners are saying that, you know, after they remember what happened to the super dome where people were route

many people died in that situation. they're happy, at this point, that we aren't seeing anything like that, fortunately, at this point. i spoke to renee who went to school in new orleans. now she lives in dc and she told me the sight of the flood waters in houston brought back a lot of memories for her, especially the struggle that many friends of her endured in katrina. this time she tells me the aftermath of harvey feels different. >> when i see the images of the people working together, it really shows that through all the devastation, humanity really shines through. you saw people of different ethnicities, of different ages, of different backgrounds all working together towards a common goal. and that goal was to just make it out of their homes to safety. and so i hope that when people see images like that, they are encouraged and i hope it

people together. >> now, renee tells me she expects houston and southeast texas, she expects they'll recover. even with her optimism. she believes it's going to be a tough road for african-americans, that's why the federal government's response is really going to be important to this whole thing. >> let's talk about that. the president was there this week and vice president pence is there right now. what are your listeners saying about the white house response so far, good, bad, indifferent. >> a wait and see, mode, mr. trump has been to texas. what i heard from folks they were concerned they didn't really end that moment didn't really address the people who had been effected by the storm. the president is expected back this weekend, mr. pence, is in rockport today, one of the hard hit areas and folks were telling me that was good to see. there was a sense of some people i spoke to, a sense of disconnect. they haven't, yet, seen the consoler in chief. they've seen president bush, president obama in similar situations where you had

devastation, where you had this situations. they were on the ground and they were putting their arms around people and you haven't seen that yet. they're hoping that mr. trump will do something similar and something much more personal. >> i think we saw that with the vice president. >> he was touching and holing people's hands. >> that's important. >> from what i heard from people, they want to hear and see somebody who is really in there and understanding what they're going through. >> you know, getting back to katrina, we learned a lot from katrina and how to respond in the past 12 years. but your listener had to leave so many people had to leave new orleans and had to spread out and they couldn't go back. >> that's right. >> i wonder what's doing to happen to the hundred thousand and how many people in houston are in the texas area that may not be able to ever rebuild. they may not be able to go home. >> and when you look at it. this is just the beginning of this catastrophe. in the grand scheme of things just the beginning. katrina, people were displaced. they couldn't come back to new orleans, some people are still building their homes
