out. numbers will rise in the upper 70s, near 80 degrees for a lot of us. the sun will start to peek through the clouds and by 5:00 or 6:00, we get legit breaks in the clouds. highs expected to top off around 80 degrees. it's going to be breezy at times this afternoon, but i think we are shaping up nicely for your labor day holiday. stick around. i have that forecast coming up. we are following major breaking news that is likely to increase already-high tensions between north korea and the u.s. north korea tested a hydrogen bomb. this is the country's sixth nuclear test and earlier in the day the north released these pictures of its leaders, kim jong-un, inspecting the loading of a hydrogen bomb into a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

north korea will consider deploying the most powerful tactical weapons in response. we are also hearing from president trump. he responded on twitter saying north korea's words and actions continue to be hostile and dangerous to the united states. he went on to call the north a rogue nation. the president and his national security team will have a meeting later today. in a move that could complicate the u.s. relationship with south korea, trump told advisers to prepare the u.s. to with draw from a trade deal with the south. that's according to the "washington post." that move would backup the president's promise to crack down on what he calls unfair trade from other countries. the national security advisers want him to abandon that plan. today is a national day of prayer for the millions affected by what was hurricane harvey. still hard to see some of the images coming out of texas. many will send their thoughts and prayers to

>> saw it on the news today they were accepting donations at bowie, so we decided to put the jar to good use. >> church members collected items and filled rental trucks with supplies and the pastor said he and other volunteers plan to drive two trucks down to houston today. this morning there's concern about the visible damage from harvey, of course, but also what cannot be scene. ted cruz is home to 41 superfund sites. they are responsible for cleaning up some of the nation's most hazardous waste material. the epa says a total of 13 sites were flooded by harvey and there's concern about whether floodwaters also washed in pollution. be sure and watch this week's edition of

start. the 77-year-old singer of hits like "she's a lady" released a statement yesterday apologizing to fans but said the decision was based on medical advice. no further details were added to that decision. the tour is now rescheduled for summer of next year. fire crews are still in the midst of a devastating wildfire in l.a. three homes have now been lost in what is being called the biggest fire in that city's history. at least 5,000 acres are burning and fire crews think it could get bigger. hundreds of homes have been evacuated. an 11-mile stretch of the busy 210 freeway has been shut down. it's not sure what sparked the la tuna fire on friday. erratic winds made battling that blaze tough on firefighters. so far, thankfully, nobody has been hurt. let's look outside right now at the national mall. the sky brightening up and rain moving out. we are in store for a gorgeous rest of th

starting on tuesday the trail will close for up to five years to make way for the purple line and construction. the purple line is going to change the landscape in suburban maryland and many lives in suburban maryland, and a lot of people that talked to news4 are simply not happy about it. sheila flick is particularly upset because her son who goes to bethesda chevy chase high rides his bike along the georgetown trail to go to school. a temporary trail goes down busy streets so she doesn't want him riding the bike. >> my son rides his bike to school and it takes him ten minutes. without the bike he can take the bus, a school bus, and it takes 40 minutes each way on the bus. >> that's because his bus has to make many other stops picking up students from all over. there are similar stories along the path of the purple line. the

rhetoric, and north korea seems to be stepping on the gas. >> exactly. we crunched numbers here. he has done 18 missile tests, kim jong-un, since donald trump was inaugurated. his father conducted 16 missile tests throughout his entire two decade-reign. it's clear kim jong-un has put his foot on the accelerator here. sanctions are not working and the joint military exercises are not working. we heard from the president this morning and he sent a little warning to south korea saying the idea of appeasement doesn't work. some diplomats in the united states don't like to see that word used. they feel a bit handcuffed because there's not a good military option available to them and none of the diplomacy is working. so is it now time to put real pressure on china and russia, particularly russia who many believe are the ones that helped the

>> you have the olympics coming up in south korea in february. maybe he's trying to make a statement here. it doesn't get any easier for the president in terms of what options he has on the table. >> there are not a lot of options. by the way in a couple weeks we will have a big gathering of the u.n. general assembly, and i have no doubt north korea is going to be the dominant topic and they are going to want to be the dominant topic. they like to insert themselves into the conversation. make no mistake, as much as this can become a focus of this administration and maybe it becomes a laser-like focus for some, harvey aid and the recovery efforts in southeast texas and the rebuilding efforts and all the money that needs to go there, if that is not the first priority of the president and congress regardless of what is happening in north korea, they will pay a heavy political price. this is what makes the presidency hard. it's the crisis, never mind any self-infed
