scanning the roads before you hit the door. news 4's transportation reporter adam tuss will tell you what to expect as school buses clog the roads and your trek back to work. new information we learned about this powerful storm, its path and when it could hit the u.s. good morning everyone. i'm eun yang. >> look who came back from vacation. >> here i am. back for the first day of school. >> back to work, back to school. i'm aaron gilchrist. labor day holiday is behind us now. we are working for you this morning. >> that's right. we're talking about back to school for hundreds of thousands of students in our area. we have team coverage this morning. >> we're monitoring your commute and we are on the ground at school hours before the doors open. >> first we want to get your up to the minute forecast with sheena parveen. sheena, how is it looking for the kids heading back? >> how could you not be in

good mood with the back to school music. i love that music. it makes you happy. i hope we keep it around all year long and i hope the kids -- maybe it can be my ring tone. standing outside, let you know it's very comfortable for the kids at the bus stop. if you're about to leave, you can roll the windows down. it's dry outside. 70 degrees in washington. many of the surrounding suburbs in the mid-60s as we go through the day today. it's going to be warmer. the kids do not need the jacket today. later this afternoon, we have thunderstorms in the forecast. but the good news is, it's going to be missing the school day forecast. so the time frame will put it mostly around 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. you might run into the showers. storms on your evening drive home. speaking of the drive, let's check your morning commute before the day gets started. good morning, jack. >> good morning, sheena. i'll give the thumbs up on the inner loop of the beltway. the ramp to root 7, they finally pulled the cones out of the roadway. v dot still there. at least the lanes are open again on this ramp. w

a bus overheated in college park on the inner loop of the beltway as you head towards loop. there's no more smoke. try to get everything off to the shoulder. it has the possibility of an early delay. right now, knock on wood, it's not too bad. >> thank you, jack. team coverage continues with news 4's justin finch. he's live at paint branch high school in maryland. that's where i went to high school. go panthers. >> justin, tell us what can kids and other parents and students expect in montgomery county this year? >> reporter: hey there, eun. expect a lot of growth out here. you know, pretty soon you'll see the buses picking up students all over montgomery county bringing some here to paint branch high school. dropping them off here in this bus lot. their first stop before the new school year starts. again, the word here from montgomery county is going to be growth. they're expecting some 2400 new students to enroll this year. perhaps even

that's why they've gone on a teacher hiring spree, hiring more than 950 new teachers this year. montgomery county already the state's largest public school system. but some 204 schools and 161,000 students. i can tell you this morning, we've seen the principal in our front office over here. other people starting at paint branch high and also the growth continues here. a new middle school opening. silver creek also opens today. the superintendent, jack smith, is on the ground. so hear from him coming up later this hour. live from montgomery county, i'm justin finch, news 4. back to you. justin, thank you. you know what, it's not just schools in montgomery county going back today. stafford county, spotsylvania county. calvert, charles, st. mary's county. all headed back to school today. they're not alone either. shout out more. kids in frederick county, maryland. washington, howard counties getting ready for their first day of school. see the map on the screen there. arlington,

through the hurricane on sunday. you can see the camera jostling about here from all the turbulence on the plane. just two days irma has already gotten stronger since this video was taken. it is now a category 4 hurricane. >> this morning, we're getting updated satellite images from irma. take a look here. you can see the storm approaching the caribbean. eventually, the u.s. irma is expected to arrive in the leeward islands today and a move toward puerto rico on wednesday. >> let's bring in meteorologist lauryn ricketts with more on the intensity of the storm. >> the intensity is updated just about 5:00 a.m. look at this eye right there. so well-defined. these are the lesser antilles islands. tonight it will come into that area and move towards cuba. let me show thu track. i do want to let you know about a couple things. one, i see so many terrible maps on social media. makeur

your information from a meteorologist. it is likely to remain a category 4. there's no such thing as category 6. that's one thing i've seen on social media. leeward islands ton. the reason, once we go out four or five days, that track can differ from 175 miles to 225 miles. let me show you what's going on with this track right now. here are the lesser antilles islands here. this is going to continue to move just at about 14 miles an hour to the west. then just scoot north of some of these islands. puerto rico and cubament then right here it skirts between cuba and the keys. there's still a cone of uncertainty. don't concentrate on the exact track too much. we're still trying to figure this out. winds are 150 miles an hour right now. that's going to stay there continuing over the next couple of days. guys? >> lauryn, thank you. irma rages on as texas continues to recover after hurricane harvey. the death toll continues to rise there. emergey

death toll is now at 60. that's when you include people who died from indirect complications from the storm. as congress returns today, the house is expected to vote on the harvey aid package on wednesday. we're still feeling the effects of the storm at the gas pump. according to aaa, the cost of a gallon of gas increased 41 cents in maryland. $.36 in virginia and $.23 in the district. back in houston, people are using boats to salvage what they can from their homes. this is in part, due to water released from two reservoirs yesterday. people said they had no idea the flooding was going to be this bad. >> i'm angry. i'm going through a state of grief. i wake up and say how did this happen? >> thousands of people are in shelters because their homes were destroyed by the flooding. the peo

we posted a page in the nbc washington app with links on how and where to donate. search harvey help. developing now, a manhunt in charles county. police are trying to track down the man they believe it behind a deadly shooting. deputies say brian pierce shot two men outside of a home yesterday afternoon. one man died at the scene. the second is in serious condition. deputies found pierce's car on friendship landing road near a marina. investigators are still trying to figure out what led to the shooting. because of the search for pierce, the sheriff's office says extra patrols will be out near mt. hope elementary school this morning. breaking news this morning. more world leaders weighing in on north korea. angie goff has more. >> putin urges die lag with pyongyang. it could lead to a global catastrophe. he condemned the country's la t

provocation but suggested stronger sanctions that's been suggested by the u.s. wobt change anything. the comments come a day after south korea responded with military drills and a show of force following the latest nuclear test. >> also new this morning, a call for diplomacy for a diplomatic and peaceful solution to this ongoing crisis. ten minutes after the hour now. today we'll get a decision that could put the future of thousands of young undocumented immigrants up in the air. the trump administration is expected to announce it's ending the deferred action for childhood arrivals program or daca. it's likely to include a six-month delay for congress to come up with a fix. nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants have benefitted from this program since it was created five years ago. they must have entered before turning 16 and have no serious criminal background. it's cleared the way for them to get work permits

kids headed back to school today as we're already n. into september. it's going to be breezy this afternoon as well. worrying about rain after 3:00 or 4:00 tonight. sheena has the timing on that in a couple of minutes. right now, traffic with jack taylor. >> good morning. on the freeway eastbound downtown off the inbound 14th street bridge just after the exit for third street tunnel. got a crash blocking the right lane. also the bus fire that is out. beltway college park.

everything put safely to the right shoulder. thankfully, no delay. aaron, eun, back to you. >> jack, thank you. it is 6:16. a pregnant woman and several elder people are recovering right now after a car ran them down. >> this is a pretty scary scene as you can imagine. there was a block party going on in the street in philadelphia. people were celebrating, not just labor day. they were there for their friend's 80th birthday. the suv started plowing into people. it looked like a massacre. you can see the food scattered everywhere. the driver will be charmed with dui. they are all expected to be okay, though. >> today friends and family will say goodbye to a man killed as he was trying to help a stranger. she will continue helping others even though her father did that when he died. he was one of two good samari n samaritans who stopped to help drivers involved in an accident

his daughter nicole says another driver hit her father and the other good samaritan and then took off. >> i have to just pretty much keep going. it's been very hard. >> going to miss him? >> of course. very much so. my best friend. >> rios lived about two miles from the crash scene and nicole says her father loved his family. motorcycles and animals. he was a carpenter and built an elaborate doghouse for his dog lucas. sad news hitting the university of maryland. the son of a former coach was killed in a shooting. he was 25 years old. it happened on sunday night in howard county. his father, his picture here, he was the assistant football coach twice and the interim coach in 2015. still no word on suspects or a motive in the shooting. a charles county deputy is co

donated an organ to help save his life. they were best friend for 13 years and also a fellow deputy battling a degenerative kidney disease that became really bad. that's when his friend jumped in and offered to donate his own kidney. >> this is kind of where i'm at. i'm going to need it here in the next couple months probably. just step right up and said let me know what i need to do and i'll do it. >> he's my best friend. there wasn't no cutting corners with that. if i was a match, i was pretty much set. >> what an incredible gift. the surgery was conducted at georgetown university hospital. the transplant added decades to frederi frederick's life because it came from a living donor. >> i had a friend who did the same thing. he got a kidney from his brother. it changes your life. if you're dealing with dialysis. >> both of them the

>> 6:19 now. angie goff here with breaking news it from the live desk. evacuations under way here in portland because of this. this wildfire. the eagle creek fire has burned almost 5,000 acres. it's moving fast. we know that major highways are closed down in the area. despite the order, many people choosing to stay. you can see from the video there, to support firefighters, restaurants in particular. now the fire is expected to spread westward with high winds making the fight very difficult to put it out for firefighters today. i'm angie goff from the live desk. ♪ >> queen b using her influence and fans known as the beehive to raise money for those impacted by hurricane harvey. in honor of beyonce's birthday yesterday, her family and

dry. tomorrow, though, that's different. when the kids go to the bus stop tomorrow, it's going to be chilly throughout the day and showers around. then really nice for the weekend. fantastic weather and then we'll be watching hurricane irma. i'm going to show you that in a second. it's 70 degrees in washington. winchester at 64. manassas 62. so i would say really comfortable this morning. we have a light breeze out there. it will be mild by 8:00 a.m. for the bus stop forecast. 735 degrees, dry by 3:00 p.m. still on the dry side. you'll notice more cloud and temperatures in the mid-830s. we're dry like i mentioned. there's the rain to the north and west. through the afternoon, that's when it will move in. by 1:00 p.m., we're still mostly dry. the showers flare up after 4:00 p.m. even by 7:00 p.m. some thunderstorms. cloudy, cool, scattered showers for your wednesday. now we're talking about irma. look at this powerful hurricane headed towards the

team coverage. wtop's jack taylor standing by with your traffic. >> we begin with our team of meteorologists lauryn ricketts and sheena parveen. good morning. >> good morning. it is comfortable out here. i will say for the kids headed to the bus stop or anyone leaving, put the windows down. we have a comfortable breeze, temperatures are nice. about the upper 630s. around the district, near 70 degrees. as we go through the day, whether the kid at the bus stop or headed to school, lunchtime hour or just commuting, it looks good. this morning, it looks good through lunchtime. warm and breezy. temperatures in the mid-80s. through the afternoon, the school day forecast still looks dry. the thunderstorm chance won't be around until 4:00 or 5:00. if you are driving later on this evening or whatever you're doing, expect the showers and storms to be here. but the school forecast does look really good. tomorrow, though, it will be different. big temperature change for your wednesday. >> good morning, sheena.

program, they say the u.s. is their home. while supporters of the president say he's fulfilling a campaign promise. >> cultural americans. we grew up in the schools. we know american values. that's what we were raised on. >> it was an act of keeping promises that other politicians don't do. >> we'll show the american people that, whether the republicans in congress are people who are of action or of just words. >> so where will it go from there? if the president does decide to end daca or daca. it won't take effect for six month and gives congress time to act on it. >> angie goff in the newsroom. angie, thank you. hundreds of kids in montgomery county will have to find another way to school. you're looking live at the georgetown branch trail this morning. that trail will be closed for the next five years because of the purple line construction. a lot of people use it as a safe alternative to nearby roadways. opponents who rallied on the

it's 6:49. want to give you a look at this powerful storm. hurricane hunters with noaa flew through the hurricane on sunday. you can see the camera moving around here, shaking a bit because of all the turbulence. in just two days, irma has gotten stronger since that video was taken. it's now a category 4 hurricane. sheena and lauryn will be back with a look at the timing on the storm's track in a moment. >> irma's rages on as texas continues to recover after the devastation of hurricane harvey. the death toll continues to rise. emergency officials say it's at around 60 now. that's when you include people who died from indirect complications from the storm. as congress returns today, the house is expected to vote on the harvey aid package on wednesday and we're still feeling the effects of the storm at the gas pumps. according to aaa mid-atlantic, the price of a gallon of gas increased $.41 in maryland, $.36 in virginia and $.23 in the district.
