the category five storm is still churning rapidly. it passed through antigua before 2:00 this morning. working now to get you more new video out of the caribbean, showing irma's destruction already. this is the latest from hurricane hunters as they continue to fly through the storm right into the calm of the eye. good morning, everybody. i am angie goff for the second time this we can starting in the weather center because you have the latest on what's going to be a historic storm. this is massive. >> it's already been historic storm, it is the strongest storm the atlantic has ever seen. it is very strong. as we continue through the next couple hours, we'll get the latest track, we continue to watch it. we have the tracks coming

look at the school day forecast. we have rain showers. you may have heard them overnight, you definitely probably heard them yesterday afternoon. showers continue today, indoor recess. that temperature stays around 70 degrees. here's a look at irma. look at that eye, so defined. this is a spectacular image, very devastating hurricane. historic hurricane. we will continue to watch the track as it moves just to the north. we do have new information on it, we're going to be talking about that in detail and the impact on our area coming up in a few minutes. we continue our coverage on irma. it is the most powerful hurricane on record. people took refuge in homes or government shelters in antigua as it made landfall. this is the scene, yi

prepare homes for the monster storm that will hit later today. the puerto rico governor says a lot of the roads and buildings won't be able to stand up to powerful winds that are expected. some residents could be without electricity for months. nbc's dan scheneman reports while the path is clear, florida is not taking chances. all of florida is under a state of emergency. hurricane irma is spinning away, could reach florida as early as saturday. >> the storm is massive, storm surge is predicted to go miles and miles, could cover homes and go very far inland. >> reporter: members of the national guard, 7,000 members and others are on alert. >> we are getting the house ready and determining whether to stay or go. >> reporter: gas lines are long, many store shelves are empty. in miami,

computer. parents should be sure to double check the bus route. some routes have new or added stops. the school system has a transportation phone bank open at 6:00 this morning. you can find the number on the nbc washington app. all you have to do is search bus. now to another story or more stories that we are following. today we may learn the next steps for the popular trail closed for construction we have been telling you about. no one can use the trail for five years. opponents filed a temporary restraining order to lift that closure. those that use the trail say they weren't given enough notice of closing and that the detour takes them down a busy street. keep an eye on the nbc washington app, we will be updating when it comes to this issue. he pleaded guilty to killing his wife before going on a killing spree. today he will be sentenced in her death. het

he got four consecutive life terms for deaths of two people in montgomery. today he faces life without parole. the bureau chief tracee wilkins will be in the courtroom. follow updates on twitter and facebook throughout the day. president trump pushing congress to act on deferred action for childhood arrivals or daca. hours after the attorney general announced the end of it with six month delay. the president took his message to twitter saying if congress doesn't legalize it, he will revisit the issue. still unclear what all of that means. meanwhile, the outrage over the president's decision on daca was seen in washington as well as across the country. hundreds chanted yes we can outside the white house rgs and marched down pennsylvania avenue in protest of the decision. daca protects 800 thouchltng

irma is moving over antigua. we expect another update at 5:00 this morning in less than an hour. we are following a breaking situation with north korea. prugs pr russian president putin saying more sanctions aren't the solution and won't support the call for more sanctions against north korea. all members of the house will receive a briefing on the latest with the country. so far, north korea fired 18 missiles. south korea is saying it expects another missile test to happen this weekend. developing this morning, an f-16 pilot dead after a jet crashed in arizona. the jet is attached to arizona air national guard 162nd wing, the air guard's biggest training operation, and this is the second crash since 2015.

how about protect and deliver. new dash cam video shows a police sergeant helping deliver a baby. news4's barbara harrison has that story and sure to put a smile on your face. >> reporter: it is certainly not every father, mom and youngster that open the door to cameras, lights and reporters for a view of their brand new baby, but then this is no ordinary baby, or at least he didn't arrive in the order style. this officer recalls what happened when he saw this car last thursday night on east west highway. >> walked up to the minivan, mom was seated in the back here passenger seat. she showed no signs of distress. she didn't speak english much. i asked if she was okay, she kind of nodded. >> reporter: they told the officer they were headed to providence hospital, he said they were going the right way, so both cars moved

the mom said she had been there with contractions earlier, but they sent her home, saying she wasn't ready yet. the officer said after they moved on, something told him he ought to check on them again. i saw he was driving fine, wasn't driving erratic, i assumed they were doing okay. at that point i kind of went around them and no sooner than i went around them on the right side, he pulled off abruptly to the left-turn lane. >> he made a quick u-turn. >> when i got back to the van, it was a completely different scenario than five minutes prior. >> reporter: being with the canine division, may know about dogs and puppies, admits he doesn't know a lot about birthing babies. but the officer arrived just in the nick of time. >> it was game time and her child was coming down. i literally caught the baby as he came. i was just praying for him to cry. >> reporter: few seconds
