latest advisory from the national hurricane center. what does it say, sheena? >> it's not looking too different from before. we didn't expect it to change too much. computer models are agreeing. it's going to take a north turn into the week and then it's going to be impacting part of the state of florida. that still has yet to be determined. here's a look at irma from the puerto rico radar. you can see the rain and it's still a very, very big hurricane. the center of it is nearing the turks and caicos right now. it's going to stay on the path to florida going through the next couple of days. mass winds 180 miles an hour. expected to be a major hurricane even as we go into saturday morning between cuba and the bahamas. that would leave this over very warm water. favorable for it to stay a major hurricane as it impacts the state of florida. the entire state is in the cone. so it's not yet clear on where this thing is going to be hitting. we'll be tracking it. more updates throughout the day. we'll talk more about this in a bit. let look at the local weather, what you can expect for your thursday. >> good morning, sheena. good morning to the folks at

today. we're expecting a lot more sunshine. we started off with damp conditions. take a look at the forecast. 75 degrees is what we're going for. the patchy fog on the roads this morning, that's expected to burn off. take a look at the weekend forecast as well. this is a major bonus. temperatures in the low 70s. comfortable. reminiscent of fall. not quite fall yet. lots of sunshine. temperatures to peak in the low 730s. hey somara, our troubles in anne arundel county on 100 westbound as you approach i-the 7. you see the headlights sitting still. all travel lanes of 100 west blocked and diverted on to southbound i-97 until further notice. now, the district south on d.c., 295 before east capitol street. metropolitan authorities dealing with an accident. only the left lane is getting by at the scene. also got pretty sizable early delays on 210 coming northbound before the beltway. last heard the crash was in the left lane

traffic well before kirby hill. back to you. >> jack, thank you. it's 6:02. hurricane irma is now just north of the dominican republic and it's churning toward the turks and caicos islands. >> it's still a category 5 hurricane and could cause massive damage there. it's supposed to slam into florida this weekend. we're now seeing the kind of damage irma is leaving behind. we have team coverage tracking the storm. we begin with chris lawrence at the live desk. chris, good morning. >> boy, the pictures are scary, eun, aaron. i'm going to start with sad new information. we've just learned that someone has been killed on the island of anguilla. that brings the total number of dead to ten. that's the number we know of. we know the number is going to go up at some point today. most of the did he seaths confie in st. martin. there's a french side and other side. this half is controlled by france. that's where we're getting the death numbers from. it's on the

the dutch side. plenty of flooding there at the dock. reports say more than a million people in puerto rico don't have power. irma destroyed pretty much all the buildings on the island of barbuda where half the population is now homeless this morning. eun. >> chris, thank you. devastating indeed. sheena parveen picks up our coverage to talk about how people track such a monster storm. >> this can be a economy indicated process here. >> they're called the hurricane hunters. we've shown videos the past couple of days. the hurricane hunters flying through the hurricane. this is the only way to get observations of the storm when it's far out at sea. the hurricane hunters fly into the storm and show you what they do. this is an actual track from the hurricane hunters. take a look. the plane goes inside the storm and flies through the center and grabs the highest wind speeds. this was an older one. this is our most recent one because there is currently a plane right now. i

observations. this is the most recent one we have with winds over 185 miles an hour. more at flight level, but either way, this hurricane has max winds of 180 miles an hour. still a category 5. i'm going to he sho you the updated track and the local forecast through the weekend coming up. >> sheena, thank you. as the evacuations continue, we expect to our our area airports get busy. this is video from reagan national airport as people arrive from florida. one woman arrived yesterday to ride out the storm up here with her sister in montgomery county. another man left his condo behind in sarasota and flew to his home in virginia. as people are trying to leave the southeast, first responders from our area are prepared to head in and help. montgomery county fire, rescue, maryland task force one is on stand by. the haz-mat team has been sent down south to respond to hurricane irma. we've been following the storm's track hou

nbc washington app for more live reports from david culver as irma gets closer to south florida. you can follow him on twitter at david underscore culver. breaking news in montgomery county this morning. a man is dead after he was hit by an unmarked police cruiser on veers mill road. megan mcgrath is there live with more on what happened. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. all of this unfolded last night on very busy veers mill road. if you take a look right here at this intersection here. now, we've got video to show you. take a look. it was 9:45 last night. a 74-year-old man was driving a motor scooter. he was southbound on monterrey drive and was crossing over on veers mill. successfully got across the westbound lanes, but when it got to the eastbound side, that's when he was struck. the scooter was struck by an unmarked montgomery county police cruiser.

was on duty at the time. he immediately gave first aid. the man on the scooter was taken to a nearby hospital but he later died of the injuries. now, it's unclear exactly who was at fault here. there were a number of witnesses who were here on the scene. stayed on the scene and talked to investigators. at this point, they're sifting through all of that information trying to piece together exactly what happened. but a 74-year-old man was killed. back to you. >> megan mcgrath live in montgomery county for us. megan, thank you. the intercounty connector in maryland is expected to be renamed in former of a former governor. he said a top priority to ease congest con between montgomery and prince george's county. they will make it official later today in rockville. we'd like to say celebrities are like us. we've seen your kids' photos. now the

of damage in the turks and caicos coming up through the rest of the day. 60 degrees right now in washington. i'll show you irma's update in a second. 56 dulles. 59 degrees clinton. 59 gaithersburg. the thursday commute looking good. we have the patchy fog out there. keep that in mind. developing sunshine. 75 by the afternoon. staying sunny. here it is. hurricane irma, category 5. north of the dominican republic headed towards the turks and caicos. this is a very large storm. it's over 350 miles wide. max winds near the center of that. still at the cat 5 strength. it is traveling again towards the turks and caicos. then between cuba and the bahamas. a lot of models keeping it over -- it's going to stay a major hurricane. the water temperatures are about the mid to upper 80s. that is very, very favorable for continued strength. >> we see it moving into potentially the state of florida. now, i say potti

there's a wide range here in the forecast cone. so at this point, it could go closer to the bahamas. we'll have to watch where the center of it is expected to head. either way, it will be a major hurricane. it will impact florida in some way. we'll have more updates coming up going through the afternoon and evening as well. if it impacts us, which we expect some of the remnants, that wouldn't be until next week. mostly sunny and dry. same thing -- we could get outside. temperatures in the mid-70s. low humidity. sunny. monday, we should start to see increasing cloud cover from irma. it will start to get breezy, too. 74 for a high there. then we get cloudy on tuesday and wednesday. that's the day where we'll see most of impacts from the leftovers. windy and rainy. the ten-day forecast coming up. until we get to those remnants, you can really just enjoy today and through the weekend. we're looking at forecasts as we

florida is bracing for a possible direct hit from irma on sunday. >> now look at the other top stories this morning. a section of veers mill road in kensington is back open after a deadly accident there. we're told a 74-year-old man riding a scooter died when an unmarked police cruiser hit him last night. montgomery county police say the scooter had no lighting. the officer immediately called the accident in and tried to help the man. he died at the hospital, though. news 4's megan mcgrath will have a live report from the scene in a bit. donald trump jr. heads to capitol hill today. set to face questions from a senate committee about a meeting he had at trump tower. trump jr. will be questioned by committee staff behind closed doors. a maryland man will spend his life in jail for a series of shooting. tordil was sentenced to two life terms for his wife's murder outside high point high school last year. tordil shot and killed his wife and injured a man who tried to help her. now, to this developing story that's left aam

barreling toward them. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in miami with the latest. >> aaron and eun, good morning. irma expected to make landfall in the miami area according to the latest forecast sometime over the weekend. packing very strong winds. strongest storm that hit the potentially -- potentially the area. there is a run on gas and a run on supplies. we've been seeing long lines throughout the area. gas buddy.com reports that more than a third of gas stations in the miami ft. lauderdale area are out of fuel. yesterday, mandatory evacuations started to get under way in the florida keys. the governor estimates that more than 25,000 people have evacuated the florida keys. several shelters are opening up in miami-dade county. several mandatory evacuations taking effect for low-lying areas as well as miami beach. the first major evacuation for this area in 12 ye

scene now in kensington with more on what happened. megan? >> reporter: well, yeah. this all happened at this very busy intersection that you see behind me. i'm standing on veers mill road. around 9:45 last night a 74-year-old man was driving a motor scooter. he was actually southbound on monterrey drive but was trying to cross veers mill. he successfully got across the westbound lanes but in the eastbound side, the scooter was struck by an unmarked police cruiser. the police officer was on duty at the time that it happened. we're told that he did get out of his cruiser and immediately gave first aid. the driver of that scooter, however, taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead from the injuries later on. we're not real sure in terms of the exact way this all unfolded. there were a number of witnesses who stayed on the scene. they are talking to investigators. so they're still working t

perfect weather if you want to exercise. sunny and dry. school forecast for this morning. areas of fog by 7:00 a.m. 60 degrees. lunchtime, low 730s. ged outside for recess today and 3:00 p.m., mid-70s. temperatures mostly in the mid up toer 50s. 55 manassas, 59 degrees currently in clinton. now we're going to look at hurricane irma. look at this thing. it is still organized and defined. north of the dominican republic on a track to the turks and caicos as a category 5. we don't expect this to be weakening as it nears the turks and caicos. max winds 180 miles an hour. this is the most recent update from the national hurricane center. the path is looking similar. heading towards the u.s. between cuba and the bahamas. this will keep it as a major hurricane strength. either a 4 or a 5. then we expect the north turn going into saturday night and early sunday. florida, the entire state of florida, et

it could go anywhere across the state or further out into the bahamas and then towards georgia and south carolina. we'll be watching it closely. computer models still not in complete agreement but somewhat agreement with the north turn. it could be impacted in some ways. we're not sure where it's going to hit. we'll keep watching it for you. coming out later this morning, looking at the local forecast. absolutely gorgeous. irma would be impacting us next week by tuesday and wednesday. let's check the commute with jack taylor. good morning, jack. >> good morning, sheena. we had the fog hoping it continues in burn-off stages. trying to leave frederick south of -- toward 109. nothing in the roadway, but it is an unusual slowdown for this amount of volume. summer is over. at least everybody back in school. d.c. 295 moving southbound. still have delays getting into the district. getting off the bw parkway to an earlier crash.

george's county. >> right now police in maryland are searching for this missing pregnant teacher. laura wallen. her family said she never showed up for the first day of class tuesday. we have information on her car, which is also missing. that's on our nbc washington app. >> a section of veers mill road in kensington back open after a deadly accident. we're told a 74-year-old man riding a scooter died when an unmarked police cruiser hit him. that scooter had no lights. hurricane irma is still making records as a category 5 storm. it's just reaching turks and caicos right now. at least ten people have died in the caribbean. that number is expected to rise. watch the "today" show coming up for live coverage from puerto rico. >> an update on the track for irma will be up on midday. tune in for that too. as far as the local weather is concerned, below normal. normal highs in the 80s still.
