news 4 begins now with storm team 4. good morning, i'm chris lawrence. david culver is out on assignment in florida. >> we'll be checking in with him shortly. i'm angie goff. so glad you can join us early on saturday. we're tracking a lot, including the latest with hurricane irma as it barrels towards the state of florida. lauren, what's the latest now? >> right now we have the 5:00 a.m. update. winds are down a little bit to 155 miles an hour, this thing is still a monster, just to the north of cube. it has shifted west. all eyes are on the southwestern state of florida, naples, ft. myers. we're going to really have to watch the storm surge as we do through over the next several hours. should make landfall in the next 24

southeast of miami moving west northwest at 12 miles per hour. right now it is skirting along the cuba coastline as a category 4. the water temperatures are close to 90 degrees. we may see strengthening as it makes it across the florida straight. it comes across southwest florida, 125 to 155 mile-per-hour wind, storm surge of 20 feet. as we continue on sunday morning, we are looking for the wind 50 to 75 miles per hour. a storm surge of 5 to 10 feet, 12 inches of rain. as we make our way into sunday evening, central florida, looking at 100 to 125-mile-an-hour wind, storm surges, 10 inches of rainfall. southeast, 50 to 75 mile-per-hour wind, 5 inches. all

people are feeling as a result of it. here in nasa where i am, a heat warning remains in effect. tropical force winds. people in the southern bahamas, now they are trying to figure out what it's going to look like there when they get a chance to do recovery. that island was pummeled on friday. that section of the island i should say was pummeled on friday. authorities are very concerned that there may not be much of anything for people to go back to there. craig and sheinelle. >> rehema in nasa, thank you. it is hard to believe but there's another storm brewing. dylan in palm beach. dylan, good morning to you. >> good morning, guys. we are in palm beach with winds picked up significantly from yesterday and the storm is still about 24 hours away. people here are

warning. most buildings boarded up including trump's mar-a-lago. you can see the shutters on the windows. they seem to be good to go especially now that it's taking a more westward path. i want to point out jose, as you just mentioned. it is a category 4 hurricane and it is expected to hit the island of barbuda, which has just been decimated by the recent storm as hurricane irma just moved through. 90% of the structures have been damaged or did he trieestroyed. we have antigua barbuda, anguilla, a dangerous storm surge of 2 to 4 feet is also likely with this storm system. as i mentioned, it is a category 4 hurricane. winds are up to 150 miles per hour. it is going to move just to the north of barbuda. this one is

there. >> hurricane irma is barreling towards florida as you mentioned. news 4's david culver gives us a look at the eerily quite scene in florida ahead of the storm. >> you won't see me but you can hear me. ooichl i'm driving down ocean drive in south peach in this suv. if you know south beach you know on friday night, this is usually a place bustling. this isn't a place you would dare to drive, let alone pull up and park in front of the clevelander. that is the reality in south beach tonight. as i come out, i'll show you a little of what we're talking about. a lot of the folks who live in this area have evacuated. this, of course, being right next to the beach is part of the mandatory evacuation zone. we caught up with one person, her name is courtney purton, she's living here since 2003, wanted to know what did she make of this desolate area. >> it's like i had the whole beach to myself. it was amazing. i could used to it for a day or two. then i'm going to be

it's a little chilly start out there this morning. some temperatures are in the mid-40s especially when you get into frederick county, maryland. a little chilly out there. we will warm up. thanks goodness all sunshine today with temperatures running into the low 70s. what about irma. what exact is that going to have on us as we head into next week. we're going to talk about when we're going to see some rain here and have impact from her coming our way. it's all timed out in the ten-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, lauren. one person killed, four others in critical condition after a food truck crashed into a car in loudoun county. this happened yesterday just before 5:00 on evergreen mills road near watson. fire crews said to use special equipment to remove that bus from top of the car. the food truck needs to be a school bus. it was reconfigured. several people inside the car were trapped more than two hours. investigators still tried

>> 6:16, a family is thankful their daughter and if you baby is alive this morning after the victim said her boyfriend set her on fire. she was pregnant at the time. she told police her boy friend doused her with flammable liquid inside her apartment in capitol heights and then set her on fire. her father was understandably upset when he spoke to news 4 about what happened. >> he's a coward. he's less than a man. walk away. you don't want the responsibility, walk away. >> she said her daughter is in critical condition and delivered her baby seven weeks early. he says his daughter is doing okay. meanwhile the victim's sister talked about how hard it was to see the toll the fire took on her sister's body. >> walking in to see your sister burned from her face all the way down to her feet. imagine that happening to your family.

while police helped track down the suspect, charges pending against him, police have not released the man's name. >> at 6:17 this is not what you want to see riding the metrobus. take a closer look. this is what news 4 sent us yesterday. >> t dheverir caught on cell phone video reading the paper while driving a bus full of people. the man that tweeted the video said the driver was even turning the pages while the bus was move. viewer said f6 route that left fort taughten. he also sent it to metro. they poll dpifd and how old him off the road pending the investigation. i'm sure husband bosses, none too happy. a massive recall may be in the future for ford explorers. the government may step up investigation into possible carbon monoxide leaks.

2014 and 2015 explorers. again, exhaust in vehicle when auxiliary climate is on. then this from ford explorer customers. here is one from june 2011, the vehicle cabin is field with exhaust fumes. another from march 2011. my wife numerous times was having problems concentrating while driving. in all 2700 complaints over a six-year period. three reported crashes, 41 injuries. now many explorer owners are filing lawsuits against ford claiming their car is making them sick. >> i'm still waking up every day with a migraine. >> susan's attorney says cases like hers could fall unthe lemon law. >> this clearly falls within the parameters of the lemon law. if people are driving around with this carbon monoxide, all these things happening to them,

defect. >> news 4 reached out to both ford and nhtsa. it says it does not comment on open investigations. ford tells us safety is our top priority. we have not found carbon monoxide in nonpolice explorers. this preliminary information found no evidence that injuries or crashes were the result of carbon monoxide poisoning. however, it does say co levels may be elevated in certain driving scenarios. >> if this is determined to be a safety defect, ford will be on the hook for significant fines from nhtsa for nailing to address this problem when they already knew about it. >> and that was news 4's susan hogan reporting. police departments nationwide, including montgomery county, have been taking their out of service temporarily. undergoing repairs after several police officers across the nation reported getting

florida straight, north of cuba. a massive hurricane, it has weakened slightly. category 4, winds of 155 miles per hour. it continues to move right along the northern coast of cuba at this point. but the waters here are in the 90s, upper 80s and lower anyone. a little bit of reintensification could be possible as now that track has shifted west. all eyes on the southwestern coast of florida. naples, ft. myers, this is going to be by sunday afternoon. again, they are going to be watching this thing from now until it passes through florida. it will weaken slightly. one thing i am considering about right here, we are going to have a little wind shear. that could weaken it a little bit. watch the track as it continues to move up through the deep south. we will have some tropical storm-type condition once we get into the deep south. then it curves back around. that's something we'll watch. ten-day forecast and get to that

bands hitting florida, category 4, 245 miles south southeast of miami, 155-mile-an-hour winds. don't let that fool you, it's just 2 miles an hour less than category 5. saturday morning around the keys. moving slowly at 12 miles per hour. so it makes landfall sometime along the west coast somewhere near where i am monday early morning or sunday night with 120-mile-per-hour winds and then it continues on up into the southeast still as a system -- tropical storm probably. wednesday it's in the western parts of kentucky and tennessee. the storm surge, we are looking for anywhere from 3 to 8 to 12 feet, and that's going to be on top of some high tide. we have this one new traffic that comes in that shows you where the high tide and storm surge will be. marco island down to the everes

or more, so we'll be tracking that. storm surge point guard the one item that happens to kill more people than anything else in a hurricane. guys, the other thing we have to worry, this is going to be traversing the spine of the state and will be here about 24 hours. the risk of tornado increases and the rainfall. we're talking anywhere from 10 to 15 inches of rain portfolio this is over. sheinelle, craig. >> thank you, al. >> cuba and the bahamas are in the cross-hairs right now. rehema ellis in nasa. rehema, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. all of the caribbean has been fearful of the storm and right now cuba has been slammed by the fury of hurricane irma. it's expected to linger over that island for most of the day. we understand with punishing winds of 150 miles per hour. those are deadly winds and the result of what we've already seen in other parts of the caribbean. 23 deaths now reported as a re

this monster storm, that has been racing through this area. here in nasa a hurricane warning remains in effect for central and south floriwhere we are. tropical storm force winds, rain, thunder, lightning. people may think they have skirted some portion of the storm but certainly that's not the case for southern bahamas. they got pounded by irma and think there may be very little to go back it when they can can crews in the area to assess damage. back to you. >> rehema, thank you. it's hard to believe there's another storm brewing right now. dylan is palm beach with more on that. dylan, good morning. >> good morning, guys. it is hard to believe, especially for an island like barbuda, which i'll talk about murk jose in just a second. things are changing here in palm beach. the wind has increased

the ocean is starting to get really churned up. once the sun comes up you'll be able to see a better view of that. this entire area seems to have been properly evacuated. we have seen nobody around. a few sites here yesterday. they seem to have gotten out of town as everything is boarded up in this area. restaurants and shops all along the main drag here in palm beach. everything is boarded up. if not, it's because they have those hurricane windows in place. some people taking extra precautions. mar-a-lago, trump's southern white house, per se, is right up the street from where i am right now. that has been properly porded up as well. obviously the shutters in place bracing for the storm. it now looks like it is taking that westward track. we're still going to feel extreme wind gusts and a very dangerous storm surge here. let's take a look at hurricane jose. as i mentioned barbuda was an island pretty much 90% destroyed. their buildings and homes in the ea

irma. now hurricane jose is just knocking on the door. we have hurricane warnings in effect for barbuda, antigua, 6 to 8 inches with more flooding. storm surge 2 to 4 feet along with winds around 150 miles per hour. it is just a one-two punch for that poor island as category 4 hurricane moves along. this storm is going to take a much different path than hurricane irma. it is going to take a sharp turn to the north and then to the east. didn't even look like it will affect bermuda. that storm won't have impact on the united states. leeward islands are concerned about jose. >> dylan, thank you. we'll have much more on "today," msnbc and throughout the day on nbcnews.com. this has pn been an nbc news special report. at 6:36, we know that

far as it barreling towards us or having major impact to people. leaders in our states already taking action in order to get in place and help others. >> that's important. it's important that the entire country, especially in the wake of harvey, that we all pull together at this point. virginia governor mcauliffe has cleared a state of emergency ahead of irma. just days after returning from helping out in houston the fairfax county rescue group landed in puerto rico to help with recovery efforts there. and now hurricane irma barreling towards florida as we've been reporting all morning. governor rickernurging residents to be safe from the storm. that includes more than half a million people in miami-dade county. nbc sarah rosario reports from ft. lauderdale, which is right in the crosshairs. >> reporter: the message clear. >>

breaking news. we have breaking news coming out of precipitation georges county right now. police say two people are dead following a car crash in front of fairmont heights high school. you're looking at video from the scene that was taken around 3:00 this morning. from what we understand the driver crashed into a tree. we're told the driver impacted at the scene. no information at this point has been released on this tragic early morning crash. at 6:42, looking abroad, to the far east in fix, the world keeping an eye on north korea. that is because south korean officials are suggesting the north could launch another missile test this weekend. today marks the anniversary of the country's founding. north korea has a history of marking celebrations with a show of military force. meanwhile, the united states will call for united nations vote on monday calling for tougher sanctions on the north. this comes one week after north korea conducted its sixth and largest nuclear

as well as we continue to monitor jose. looks like jose will kind of wrap around. of course the leeward islands, who just got hit, are really paying teengs attention to that. we're following irma. here is the latest track. it's been downgraded slightly. now a category 4 hurricane with winds 155 miles an hour. the thing is, waters right here are in the upper 80s and lower 90s. the question is when is this going to take the turn to the north. it's just on the northern side of cuba. you can't see because it's right here. again, this southwestern site, naples, ft. myers, this is where we'll have the most devastation in terms of storm surge. also winds on the center, 150 miles an hour. this will be tomorrow afternoon. it will continue to move through tampa and deep south and start to curve back. we will see remnants here as we get into midweek. that's going to be something we're watching here.

people still staying at a shelter in houston got a special visit. janet jackson visited them at the shelter at the george r. brown convention center. she's performing at houston's toyota center tonight and is dedicating the concert to those affected by hurricane harvey. bless you. jackson is also donating proceeds from the show, the local flood relief charity. beyonce spent friday in her hometown of houston meeting with families affected by hurricane harvey. her mother posted a few videos of the visit to instagram. her first stop a church. beyonce sponsored a lunch for 400 families affected by the storm. you can see them there serving lunch. that's beyonce there in the jean jacket, in case you're wondering. she was in charge of green beans. very, very nice. with all the concentration obviously on irma right now, it's important
