good morning, everybody. i'm chris lawrence in for david culver. >> i'm angie goff. a lot to cover not only this morning but throughout the week, not only this morning but over the weekend as it changes path quickly. >> what are you seeing right now? >> powerful category 4 hurricane expected to reintensify as we go over the next several hours. a category 4 winds are 130 miles an hour and barreling in on the keys and also southwest florida as the track shifted just to the west overnight. it's about 190 miles southeast of key west. you can see nothing happening in our area, thank goodness. here is a loot irma right now. it parallel the northern border of cuba. it continues this forward motion before it will take a turn to the north. that's something we're really wanting to see exactly when that's going tha

concerned about once you get a storm of this magnitude, storm surge. this is really something we will want after it makes landfall, which will be sometime during the day tomorrow. definitely don't want to concentrate on that as much as what we're going to be seeing over the next 24 to 36 hours because the wind and rain are stretching into that area. so we could have a 9 to 12 foot storm surge in some of that region. what does that exactly mean? the winds will push all this water up. the closer to the coast, the better chance of seeing this be a little bit stronger, especially down that southwestern coast right by names, right by ft. myers. so we're going to be watching major flooding unfortunately for that area. we'll give you the latest track and let you know what's going to be expected with irma. that happens next week. more on that coming up in just a little bit. >> we're continuing to open

we're going to do everything we can to get people to safety. the keys are going to start getting hit with the winds. the big thing i'm worried about is the storm surge. unbelievable storm surge. as much as 12 feet of storm surge. you're not going to survive it. if you're in an evacuation zone you've got to get out. you've got to get out now. >> not going to survive it. pretty strong words from governor rick scott on "today" we heard in the liss hour. we'll get a live update from him coming up in a few minutes. here is a quick look, four things to know about hurricane irma. currently category 4 storm winds blowing 130 miles an hour. 23 deaths have already been reported. this monster storm is expected to pass through the florida keys tonight before moving spoke southwest florida. nbc's sarah rosario reports on ft. lauderdale, which is great in the crosshairs. >> the message clear. >> you need to go

in ft. lauderdale, nbc news. police gearing up to help first responders in texas and florida. they are sending two trailers loaded with supplies. two more left for victims of hurricane harvey. local police and fire departments collected the goods. it's 9:05. president trump will be keeping a close eye on hurricane irma at camp david. before he left, the president delivered a message on social media urging people in the path of the storm to listen to local officials. >> i ask everyone in the storm's path to be vigilant and heed all recommendations from government officials and law enforcement. nothing is more important than the safety and security of our people. we are doing everything we can to help with disaster preparations. and when the time comes, we will restore, recover, and rebuild together as americans.

the areas affected will come back stronger than ever before. while florida braces for landfall with hurricane irma, thousands across the caribbean are desperately searching for shelter after the storm. st. martin has been definite straighted. news 4 talking to a local woman whose sister is strappeded there. >> what's your greatest fear? >> not seeing her again. >> denise polk is worried. her only sister is stuck at a ravaged resort in the caribbean. >> she's our baby sister, and we just want to get her home. >> reporter: alice and her husband flew to oyster bay beach resort in st. maarten last thursday. they texted this video to denise. >> you see our view of the atlantic ocean. >> she only had me on the text message because she didn't want to worry anyone else.

>> she sent this video early wednesday morning showing hurricane irma's fierce winds at the resort. the total told guests to evacuate. denise said her sister couldn't get a flight out. >> just a text. she had to leave the room and sent the text message that says we're going to try to make a run for it. >> irma destroyed st. maarten, electricity and wi-fi signals are scarce. denise talked to her sister for a couple minutes. >> she said, denise, do whatever you can to get us home. >> now she's concerned because of hurricane jose. >> you've been in contact with the state department. what are they telling you? >> my understanding is they are trying to bring a plane in but the airport is demolished. >> right now she waits for answers hoping her sister makes it back to the u.s. >> there's no more shelter. >> shomari stone, news 4. 9:07. we continue to work for you in florida. our news 4's david culver is tr

prosecutors are saying a man parents trusted may have more child pornography victims than the dozens they already know about. christopher spate worked as a substitute teacher at bradbury heights. he was basketball coach. prosecutors say he lured students to his home and victimized them during the team's road trip. police identified the man accused of sexually attacking a woman near a metro station. take a look at the screen here. this happened near west falls church. police did not arrest him until id

is beautiful, shaping up to be wonderful. we do have rain on the way. that will be from irma. that is monday night through possibly thursday. it was a chilly start this morning. we started in the 40s and 50s, now warmed into the lower 60s in the region and will continue to warm low- to mid-70s today. a-ok today. plenty of sunshine after that chilly start. it's going to be another chilly night tonight as well. all right. let's go ahead and take you down south. this is irma right now. winds 130 miles an hour. i don't need to point it out to you. this is cuba right here. it continues to move west northwest. bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms already up in that southern tip around miami. pretty much south of miami all the way to the tip, not a lot of population, nobody lives there, once you get down to miami and naples there. it's weakened a little bit, 130 miles an hour. my system is stalling becau

the water right here is in the upper 80s to lower 90s. there we go. so begin, it could reintensify as it travels and takes the turn to the north because warm water fuels hurricanes. not a lot of wind in the upper layer of the atmosphere to sheer it apart. it could be apart by that point. might be too late. category 4 right now. expected to remain category 4 as it sweeps into the ft. myers area during the day tomorrow, then rolls through tampa, sarasota, siesta key. some of those areas evacuated and continues to move up through central florida. then by tuesday, wednesday, it's in the deep south and up through the ohio valley. we're going to start to see cloud cover debris monday morning. clouds will increase monday for our area. then by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday, that's when we could see rain out of it. once it hits land, we're going to have to concentrate on the

. when you've been married 75 years, there's going to be some good times and stormy ones as well. >> that's right. for a couple in spokane washington, there's something happening right now that caught them completely off-guard. you may ask, what's in a name. ryan overton explains. >> in two weeks, there have been two major hurricanes making landfall in the united states. first harvey in texas, and now irma into florida. hurricanes can last a few days to a couple of weeks, a different harvey and irma have lived a combined 196 years.
