upwards of 140 mile per hour wind gusts. >> take a look. here's the current radar tracking irma right now. you can see there's the eye right there. and i want to zoom in and show what we're seeing. it was heading north toward orlando, but now we're seeing that movement back towards the northwest. just getting pelted with heavy rainfall. winds close to 100 if not 1 miles an hour. the yellow here is going to be a tornado watch. and these are also flash flood warnings in effect as well. max winds at 100 miles an hour moving toords the north at about 114 miles an hour. it's going to turn towards the rt

throughout the day tomorrow it leaves florida and takes aim towards georgia. but then it's downgraded tomorrow evening to a tropical storm. it then becomes a tropical depression and starts to fizzle out by tuesday. but irma, going to bring some rain to our area. the timing and impact coming up. >> saung so much. the frightening torse of irma carving a frightening path of destruction on both coasts of florida. and in the keys it's a slow march up florida. >> and now tampa's turn to brace for impact. >> reporter: with winds topping 130 miles per hour, hurricane irma is roaring up the florida coast. a lengthy assault with no area seemingly safe. >> there's nowhere safe. >> a couple tried to ride out the worst aboard the

>> it's my home. so i was doing everything i could to save it, and it just got out of hand. >> the monster storm crashed the florida keys. bridges and homes inundated by water, and then ripping away to the mainland. topping cranes and tearing off roofs in sarasota. the area hasn't taken a direct hit from a hurricane in nearly a century. >> even though we haven't had a direct hit in 90 years, we know our number is coming. this is that day. we think we have a good plan, but you never know until you get in the middle of it. >> reporter: nowhere in the sunshine state spared with millions still in its path. with mandatory curfews and evacuations in place in still much of the state, many have no idea of the condition of their home this evening. still some

of this was grass and beautiful and serene and calm. now you can see one of trees that we were actually standing under 48 hours ago has tipped over. that same intensity ripping apart old glory, leaving the flag tattered. bringing down traffic lights, and massive trees. you can see this is one tree that is entirely up rooted, turned on its side. look at this. some of the piping. these are pipes just snapped and pulled up with it. irma getting under south florida's skin. peeling off bill boards, ripping off roofs. driving the streets, you've got to dodge debris. many roads flooded.

just some devastating images that have been coming into the newsroom on the damage caused by hurricane irma from the caribbean to florida, cities look like a bomb went off. parts of cuba are in ruins and places that people once called home are barely standing. a stark reminder of the power of a hurricane. >> and irma is still battering florida tonight with heavy winds, rain, and some storm surge flooding as well. but the good news is the storm is starting to weaken. as it continues to weaken. i'm going to let you know how it'll impact our weather here throughout the workweek. in other news, police in

charged with second degree murder. police found his girlfriend shot to death in her car on palmer street last night. he's now being held without bond. we want to switch gears and take your hearts and minds in a completely different direction. a little over a year ago a struck struck a car on the beltway killing a woman. >> samantha was 20 years old, she was a donor. and her organ helped save nine lives. >> i got the phone call about 4:30 in the morning from the maryland state police. >> reporter: it's the phone call no parent ever wants. >> the words out my mouth was was she was going to make

produce heavy rain. when this is all said and done, parts of the peninsula and especially the keys we'll see about 10 to 20 inches of rain. moderate storm surge still in effect. in addition to that damaging winds and tornadoes as well. tropical force winds extend outwards as far as 415 miles. here's the center, this is how far-out they extend. winds that strong will likely produce and still produce power outages. >> they saw some really amazing wind gusts out there. 142 mile per hour wind gusts in naples was reported at the airport. not only that, they have to deal with the storm surge. and 10 foot storm surge. as we head throughout the night, let's go ahead and take a look at what they can expect. windows right now are

miles per hour in tampa. they're actually going to see these winds start to increase just a bit. orlando 65 mile per hour winds. it's even bad out towards areas like central florida. let's go ahead and push towards the forecast. going to early morning. this is when the st. petersburg, tampa region is going to start to see things rev up. they're looking at posly 94 mile per hour wind gusts. even keeping tropical storm force winds in there as we head through late wednesday. of course, one of the components is that deadly storm surge. what we have is this north flow. and then we start to see that back ended flow. so areas experiencing heavy rain, damaging winds earlier, things have quieted down. but we're going to start to see that storm surge really moving in on the back of that storm surge flow. we have s i

but areas are still in danger. naples right now in the red. greater than 9 foot storm surge possible. and then you head up the coastline. this was an area of primary concern for me earlier. the bay expecting more than they've got right now. so that's gone down just a bit. but still dangerous. 3 to 4 foot storm surge expected in that tampa bay area. back to you. >> when we got the 9:00 p.m. advisory, it was good news. they were bringing down those storm surge warnings anywhere from 9 to 10 feet now down to about 3 to 5 feet. i want to talk about irma is going to impact us. here we are 1:00 a.m. here's irma, and here's washington. you can see still clear skies out there. but clouds do increase. by afternoon and evening hour

but those clouds tomorrow when you're noticing them, know they are from irma. tuesday morning 8:00 a.m., we keep it dry but notice parts towards southern virginia, that's the remnants of irma. maybe on tuesday evening on into wednesday morning we finally get some rain showers from what's left of irma at that point. nothing to be concerned about. certainly something we can handle. but, again, rain may be from irma in our area tuesday into wednesday. it was a gorgeous weekend here at home. 61 right now here enwauks. we start off tomorrow with light jacket weather for the kids at the bus stop. and a high of 77 degrees. we stay in the 70s for the workweek. have an umbrella handy, but most of the time you won't need to use it. right now i'm ng
