>> in northeast florida historic flooding in jacksonville is expected to continue for days. and now south carolina is dealing with storm surge and heavy rain from irma. the storm impacting roughly a dozen states now. we've got team coverage four again

harris at the live desk. >> you mentioned this storm is deadly and so far nbc news is counting 39 people killed by irma. but get this. only one so far in the entire state of florida, and that was from a traffic accident caused by the weather even though 6 1/2 million people had to evacuate. right now irma's pounding georgia and the carolinas. take a look here at the scene of the rising waters in savannah. as you can see, that city is flooded. heavy rain, high winds and downed trees also to blame for dozens of power outages. check out this water spout. this was spotted near charleston today. and charleston looks just like savannah right now, a city underwater. the heavy rain and a storm surge pretty much left the water with no place to drain off. in florida the biggest concerns tonight are in jacksonville. there have been dozens of home rescues so far in that city of 880,000. the flooding there could continue for about a week, we're told as the storm surge persists and tides rise and

>> three to four feet on top of a foot of rainfall which is causing record and historical rainfall along the st. john's river. >> we're just beginning to grasp the economic impact of irma. insurance losses alone including homes, businesses and vehicles estimated to cost between 20 and 40 billion dollars. doreen, back to you. >> leon, thank you. florida's major airports are working to reopen for business tomorrow. that includes fort lauderdale which will resume operations in just four hours. news 4's david culver has been reporting all weekend from the atlantic coast. tonight he's leaving fort lauderdale and heading to naples to take a look at the damage over there. before he left david filed this report. >> reporter: the question is how long. how long will it take south florida to get back to some sense of normalcy following irma? i'm climbing what is one of i don't know, about 100 sand dunes that line a-1a. this is in fort lauderdale beach and this has been put up here because they were sitting

along a-1a. this is just one of the many roads that had had some obstacles blocking it. they've had trees down throughout the area. flooded roads in many cases. the question is how do you get back to normal? it starts with what we've seen all day today. the cleaning operation. and there's been a lot of it. then you talk about schools and getti inting kids back to schoo. they have to use what are now shelters and turn those back into classrooms. many people were seeking shelter there throughout aroma. they now are heading back to their homes. but they're also waiting for a lot of the staff and students to return. you have to remember many of them were following the mandatory evacuation orders and in some cases flying out of town. and speaking of flying, they've got to fly back into town but airports are still struggling to open up. >> we have a lot of standing water but not on our runways right now. we're in very good shape. >> just about anyone you talk to in the southeastern porn

county or miami-dade county are breathing a sigh of relief. they really feel like irma could have been much worse here. and it's for that reason, though, that we want to continue surveying some of the damage. our coverage is going to continue as we move from here and head to points west and give you some of the yinimages on th evened of the peninsula. that's the latest in south florida. i'm david culver. we'll send it back to you. >> let's see how i amma could impact our forecast now with chief meteorologist doug kammerer. >> this is storm is just a huge massive beast. how long before it really starts to fizzle out? >> it's still going to be a day or two before we really start to see it wind down. but the hurricane it was yesterday, the tropical storm that was today has now become the tropical depression that is tonight. we're looking at the shower activity right now and really just the rain. and it has been heavy rain around the atlanta area parkts of alabama, trees down in both states. over a million people without power in georgia today, in parts of the carolinas

extremely heavy rainfall. and all of the flooding, historic flooding in jacksonville, fan nav, brunswick, over toward the charleston area and they continue to get those outer rain bands making its way in here. the center right about here. making its way across the border into alabama overnight tonight. now, we also have to talk about jo jose. it's not a very well organized storm. the winds are down to 85 miles an hour. there's a new track. i'll have that plus tell you when we do see the rain from irma. i'll be back in about ten minutes. breaking news in southwest d.c. right now. this video just in from martin luther king jr. avenue just off south capitol street. police say that somebody called them here for a stabbing about 9:30. they found a man unconscious and unresponsive. homicide detectives are on the scene right now. but we do not have an update on the man's condition. protests marking one year since a deadly shooting involving d.c. police. that shooting killed terrance sterg. tonight his friends and

where he died to d.c. police headquarters. that's where we find news 4's jackie bentsen with the story. jackie? >> reporter: well, protesters expressed frustration at both the investigation and its outcome. one year to the day after terrance sterling was killed his friends and others who are outraged by his death took to the streets. >> no justice no peace. >> reporter: they marched from 3rd and m street northeast where he was shot and killed in the earl i morning hours of september 16th after colliding with the door of a police cruiser. an autopsy found alcohol and marijuana in his system. last month the u.s. attorney's office announce td would not file charges against the officer involved. at d.c. police headquarters the protesters vented their frustration and anger at that decision. at police decisionsnd

funding for the wars in iraq and afghanistan. he protested tonight by siebltly sitting on the senate floor to stall progress on the bill until the lawmakers vote on his amendment. paul tweeted this out, "i will continue these protests and these objections for as long as need td to ensure congress do its duty and vote on ending these wars." earlier today there were different tributes to remember the victims of the 2001 attacks in new york. family members recited the names of the victims at the 9/11 memorial. at the pentagon they unfurled the american flag early this morning, something they do every year. before president trump placed a wreath in honor of the 184 people killed when american airlines flight 77 crashed. and in shanksville, pennsylvania vice president pence placed a wreath at the united flight 93 memorial. the search is active but the desperation is growing tonight for the family of that missing

months pregnant. laura wallen's family received a troubling text from her about a week ago today but couldn't get a hold of her. officers refused to say what was in that text. her students posted notes on her apartment and hung missing person posters for wallen who teaches. her boyfriend and family pleaded today for new information. >> if somebody has her, please understand that you've taken away a huge person in so many people's lives. >> authorities found wallen's ford escape at an apartment complex here in howard county last week. the suv wasn't far from wild lake high school where she teaches. wallen's family now offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to her whereabouts. it took just seconds for a family and a daycare owner's lives to change forever today. when a 2-year-old drowned in charles nt

three children this morning at small wonders daycare in waldorf. she was cooking breakfast when one boy slipped through a back door onto the above-ground deck pool and fell in. when she found him, the woman tried performing cpr on the child, but he died at the hospital. neighbors with pools in the area say they've taken extra precautions with their children. >> the things we do, we do have is alarms on the doors. so when a kid does come up and it's up high so they can't disarm so, so we know someone's in the back yard. >> the news team checked and found the daycare was inspected in june and cited for bookkeeping errors but not for any safety concerns. crisis intervention counseling will be available to first responders. the man accused of killing the lyon sisters more than 40 years ago is expected to plead guilty tomorrow. we first told you last week that lloyd lee welch reached a deal to plead guilty to the 19735

miami to get away from irma. he's been putting the fire on at night. it's an that cool. but it is dhily. 58 degrees in martinsburg, 59 in gaithersbu gaithersburg. 61 in fredericksburg. we will not in the upper 40s to low 50s like we have in the last couple of days. that blanket of clouds sitting over top of us right now. but it's not giving us any showers. you can see some trying to form down around charlottesville. but that's really about it. the rest of the area, here comes the clouds across our region. but most of this not really reaching the ground just yet. it's fairly dry. but this all reaching the ground. we've got a lot of rain down around the atlanta area. they picked up about two to three inches of rain. winds gusting to 60 miles per hour today out at the airport. and then big-time rains and big-time storms over toward parts of charleston. that's why they're dealing with the flooding they're dealing with. historic flooding into the charleston area. right now number 2 as far as the flooding is concerned. behind hurricane hugo. the worst disaster in charleston back in 1989. then down

dealing with that flooding too. all of this rain making its way to the north and west out of the region but then it will move back in across our area. and believe it or not, we are actually going to depend on irma to help us move jose. jose right now not moving much. just kind of meandering here in the atlantic. but we're hoping irma moves back up to sea and picks jose up and moves it out to sea with it. let's look at the latest advisory from jose. tropical depression now irma. and this is hurricane jose. it was up to a category 4 at one point. now a category 1 hurricane with winds of 85 miles per hour. once again not moving a whole lot. northeast at six miles moo an hour. watch what happens. it's expected to go all the way around and back to the u.s. if you keep going, extrapolate this out, southeast landfall, probably not. most of the models picking up this, has irma picking up and moving out to sea. is it something we have to watch?

all right. we're used to tough ones right out of the gate, but this was particularly a rough start. >> yeah. redskins game 1 not so good. i don't think you need to hit the panic button yet. it's only week one. but not having all of their receivers healthy over the summer and in the preseason is still no excuse for the redskins offense. some of those same blows still problems now that the regular season is here. definitely not the start jay gruden wanted as he returns to play calling duties. the redskins offense looking out of sync most of the game. and kirk cousins did not look comfortable with his receivers. one receiver we didn't see much of, 2016 first-round pick josh

no targets or catches in just 20 plays against the eagles. doctson missed most of his rookie season and a good chunk of camp with injuries. needs to prove he's in practice according to his head coach. >> i think once he establishes himself as an everyday player he's going to get the reps and then he's going to prove that he is one of our top receivers. he'll get more and more reps as the season goes on without a doubt. but he's got to earn that right like everybody does. he'll make more plays in practice. the more plays he makes in practice the more comfortable he'll be and the more reps he's going to get. that will happen. i know that will happen. josh is a great receiver. now it's a matter of putting day in and day out consistently. sunday night in l.a. for them. but "monday night football" in minnesota. randy moss getting into the viking ring of honor and getting the party started. moss started it but a former maryland terp kept it going second quarter. sam bradford to stefon diggs. 18-yard touchdown catch for the good council high school alum. then getting to show off those dance moves.
