>> a little girl is wake up in the hospital with life threatening injuries. she was hurt in a crash that left a man and a woman dead. we're told their car somehow went off the road and hit a tree on beach mill road in virginia and it happened last night. for those of you that know this area it's right down the street from the french restaurant that's very popular there. police have not said what the relationship was between the victims and the little girl. >> more breaking news out of london. a second arrest was just made in ay

train. a 21-year-old man in custody in addition to the 18-year-old police arrested yesterday. they haven't said how they might be connected. the terror threat level is at critical. another attack is believed to be imminent. >> also more protests near st. louis overnight. people took to the streets for the second night in a row. protesting the acquittal of a white police officer in the fatal shooting of a black man in 2011. things turned violent where a small group of people refused orders by police to leave. they broke windows and threw objects at police. in all nine people were arrested. >> saturday was also a day of mostly peaceful protests here in the washington area. >> it ranged from protrump

rain here by early next week. guys. >> thank you, lauren, next up is reporters notebook. >> we're back in 15 minutes with more of the day's top stories. see you then. >> good morning. it was an outcome feared by dreaded. 31-year-old laura, the pregnant teacher that was missing in montgomery county for more than a week turned up the pass week in a shallow grave. many people worried about her. looked for her. police had searched the area near where she was found. turns out the boyfriend is the suspect in this case. it's a heartbreaking end to the story. joining us is tom and mark. mark we saw the boyfriend in the press conference. it stuck in our minds. he made a plea for her to come home. for her to come back. >> as you said this is a woman so beloved by her

family, her students and that press conference and optic of not just him pleading for her to come home but prior to that he's sitting in a chair next to her parents holding hands. at that moment her parents knew that he was a suspect. police considered him a person of interest at that press conference but wanted to let him get thereupon and give him this level of comfort and see what would happen. to think of the parents sitting there next to him holding his hand knowing this man is a suspect in my daughter's disappearance and her death. >> that's the stunning thing. many people are accused of crimes and convicted later of crimes that act like they're grieving over the loss of their loved one or child or anything and we don't know what the legal case could be. i just can't imagine if i'm the parent and sitting there that

i'm possibly holding the hand oppenheim someone that might turn out to be the murder. stunning. >> there's another family that is dealing with the aftermath of a terrible tragedy after 42 years and the relentless investigation by police. it appears the case involving sheila and catherine lyon may be brought to closure. the abduction and killing of those little girls 10 and 12 haunted police and tortured the family all these decades. the states attorney says this case hung like a specter over county law enforcement. and he stopped short of an admission. what are we to make of that. >> he didn't want to admit it. i would love to hear the whole story there. i didn't cover the story but i have lived here for the 40 something years and every couple of years something would happen. it just seemed

way it ended. >> i was a little bit older when this happened. my dad knew john lion. it changed everything about the way my parents would let me go walk around and freedom. he has given inconsistent stories about what happened to the girls including implicating his uncle richard welch. so what he did here is in virginia if you abduct someone and they die you're guilty of felony murder and that's what he admitted to. that he abducted the girls. we still don't know for sure and even the prosecutor said he's no longer calling richard welch a person of interest now. they don't believe there will be any more prosecutions or arrests. i don't know that you could say this exonerates richard welch but it's a long cry from when he was called a

>> we heard the family say we're tired, we just want to go home. so they don't want anymore investigation. >> john lion was very moving in his gratitude to police and the cold case unit and just saying that the family is ready to put this behind them. >> the burden of having a child day, children die and then having to live with decades later a parent lives with that every day but then to have it brought back up in the media and exposed is extraordinary. >> the state's attorney said there's a lesson to be learned here. is there? they never gave up. >> they never gave up and the resiliency of the prosecutors and particularly these detectives because we know, particularly from our partner did a deep dive into this and what his reporting showed is that investigators had all along had a sketch from a witness that resembled lloyd lee welch back in

because the detective that drew it wasn't confident of it. that witness that saw him and connected him with it was spot on so, you know, there's lessons we learn but never giving up and just what we learned from the family. just how resilient and how they carried themselves with such dignity through all of this. >> all of those years. >> it's something amazing. >> less than 8 weeks from now virginia chooses a new governor. two days from now the democrat and republican will face-off in a one hour debate at the capital one headquaters. nbc 4 will carry the debate. chuck todd moderates and they'll be asking some of the questions. my question to you tom and mark is what kind of a debate do you expect that we'll see? and what are these candidates need to show the voters? >> well first of all -- this is

it's not like -- the national media keeps saying this is a test of trump experience and all of that stuff but trump has never been that popular in virginia. people voted for everybody else but this will show we're just a few weeks out. 7 or 8 weeks until the election. the democrats held all the statewide offices. republicans are desperate to hold a statewide office. he has been leading in the polls more recently. he barely beat him back in the primary. he has northern virginia. it's the place in the state of virginia. prince william county and loudoun county and that's where they are. they're pitching their message to northern virginia tuesday night. >> they're really going at northern rirj virgin

where we see the split in virginia. it's not like every other state. at times they're like night and day politically so you're going to see which side of the fence both of these candidates fall and i think having the first debate is going to give us the clearest vision of where this campaign is going. >> democrats traditionally to a three quarter office. republicans try everything else, south side and the valley. tom davis the former congressman, northern virginia is more like new jersey. this big change demographicicly, racially, minorities and making big changes. >> very quickly the biggest issue. is it abortion, is it jobs? is it metro funding? >> there's no one issue. if you're for it you're going to

richmond after two groups gathered in front of the statue of robert e. lee. now the counter protestors outnumbered those in support of the statue. police were out in force trying to avoid a repeat of the violence in charlottesville. 7 people were arrested and four charged with wearing a mask in public. the next step in the battle to rename jeb stewart high school will take place this week. yesterday the community voted to rename the school. this has been about two years in the making and started when students went to the school board saying the name isn't reflective of the communities values. the division superintendent will propose recommendation and present it to the school board next week and final vote is set fo
