officials scrambling for as many as 100,000 evacuees. take a look. stores in central florida already stocking up on plywood, propane and batteries. maria's long-term track is still unclear. some customers are just getting a headstart just in case. at 4:02. a team of first responders from fairfax county still in the u.s. virgin islands, they're helping with the recovery from hurricane irma. they'll have to stay there to ride out maria now. news 4's shomari stone caught up with them last night and a local church working to help with them on the island. >> this is definitely a feeling of sadness. >> pastor jones has a heavy heart. >> just knowing that my home is in destruction and disarray. just really being away. away from my father. >> his dad and stepmother live in st. thomas.

student was shot and killed saturday night. he apparently called 9-1-1 to report a person carrying a knife and a gun. when campus police arrive, schultz approached them with a knife and would not drop it. investigators say that schultz had left several suicide notes inside of his dorm room. five minutes after the 4:00 hour and we're following two stories in the russia investigation this morning. both involve former trump campaign chairman paul manafort. cnn reporting that the u.s. government wiretapped manafort under secret court order. meanwhile the prosecutors working for the special counsel warned manafort that they planned to indict him. that was after the fbi raided his virginia home in july. nbc news has not confirmed either story. all eyes as we know will be on president trump today as he delivers his first speech before the united nations general assembly. white house aides say that north korea will be the centr

president trump is expected to call on nations to "do their part" in confronting the threat of rogue regimes like north korea. you can watch special coverage of the president's address right here on nbc4 at 10:30 this morning. staying with politics, here at home today. the big political story is going to be the virginia governor's debate. democrat ralph northam and republican ed gillespie will face off on nbc4. it's a debate that will be pivotal in determining who becomes the commonwealth's next governor. that's because the race is essentially a dead heat right now. two polls out yesterday from suffolk university and the university of mary washington shows the race is basically tied. one thing you might notice tonight, ralph northam and ed gillespie trying to connect the voters by talking about local issues. >> they're going to look at the quality of their schools, look at transportation, they're going to look at

150 mile per hour sustained winds now as it went through dominique south of guadalupe. unfortunately, it will go through the virgin islands and u.s. virgin islands. worse still, this is likely to become a category 5 storm. just a little more intensification and then it will become a 5. winds now at 150 miles per hour. -- 155 miles per hour. the line between category 4 and 5 is 157. it really won't have any differentiating impact. but it's likely to have 160 mile per hour winds within the next 24 hours and make landfall somewhere on the eastern half of puerto rico as a category 5. likely to be the first major hurricane since george back in 1998. also another big storm was 1989, hugo went through puerto rico. hugo was a big problem in the southeastern u.s. fortunatel i

this month when a food truck crashed into their car at this intersection. news 4's meagan fitzgerald shows us the effort to make this road safer. >> reporter: v dot has made a number of changes on watson road to make things safer after that latest crash. for instance, they say they've made this sign right here bigger and closer to the intersection to warn drivers that there's a stop sign ahead. they also say that they've cleared the debris and the brush around that stop sign to make it more visible. they're hoping this helps them prevent another tragedy. you sdroent to look far to find someone concerned about this intersection in loudoun county. >> watson road, especially, that intersection is terrible. >> i would love something done. >> neighbors want action after last week's crash killed their friend and injured her three children and their grandmother. v dot engineers are studying the

decimated and now another powerful storm. >> antigua and barbuda had 90% of the homes damaged. this is bad. >> this has made landfall in dominique already. the prime minister saying every person he's aware of has lost their roof. 70,000 people on this island. that's in the middle of the night. not having gone out to see anything. they're really worried about it. >> this is the same path, right? >> virtually the same path. irma was 100 miles north of the path this was on. a storm that big, these same islands took a hard hit from irma, not a direct hit. now they're getting a direct hit from maria. sheena can attest, these storms, 100 miles makes all the difference. two in two weeks, trouble. >> really bad. especially around the center. that's where we have the strongest winds and anyone who takes that direct hit is going to be devastated. >> next up for maria will be puerto rico. i know they're rushing to complete the plans
