hurricane. that does not look good for the island of puerto rico. then it will be heading to the north. take the sharp north turn. the most updated track puts it more to the east of the bahamas. that would be better news for the united states. storms that go ooefts bahamas have a tendency to stay out to sea. other computer models are hinting it stays out to sea. it's too early to tell. as we go through the week, we'll have a better idea. there's the center of the storm. this is a very strong, organized hurricane. could become a category 5 soon. we'll update you throughout the morning. we'll take a closer look at the forecast. that's coming up in a bit. sheena, thank you. maria is barreling into the caribbean and we're already hearing about the devastation that it's leaving behind. >> about three hours ago, the prime minister of dominica posted on facebook that he had to be rescued from his flooded home. the island lost all what money can buy and replace. he's afraid of whate'

been killed. >> in puerto rico, people are stuck waiting out another monster storm. everyone who was let out of shelters after irma, as many as 100,000 people are trying to get back to safety, if you can imagine. as many a million could lose power again. the storm is supposed to hit puerto rico tomorrow. two other big stories we want you to know about as you start your day. president trump makes his first speech to the united nations general assembly. he's expected to call on other countries to quote, do their part in confronting the threat of rogue regimes like north korea. we'll check in with tracie potts for more in a few minutes. you can also watch the speech here on nbc4 or on the nbc washington app starting at 10:30. tonight, you'll be able to hear from both candidates for virginia governor. democrat ralph northam and republican ed gillespie will face off in a debate. meet the press moderator, chuck todd, will be moderating this debate.

police arrived, they found that teen boy brandishing a crowbar outside of his town home. police asked him several times to drop that crowbar, but he refused, they say and was shot in his upper body and died on scene. speaking to darcy spencer, his mother says that is not what she thought would happen. >> they come. i was saying okay, they're going to talk to him first and something else. but i mean, they used like -- he was not -- >> reporter: at last check, commonwealth attorney paul eave evert based on the findings, it looks like it was justified. the final results are due out this morning in a matter of hours. back to you in the studio. >> justin, thank

violent protests erupt at georgia tech after a vigil for a student killed by campus police. this is a campuswide alert that went out urging students to stay indoors. a police cruiser was set on fire. two officers were hurt and three people were arrested news 4 angie goff is monitoring the situation from the live desk. bring us new developments throughout the morning. leaders in prince george's county say they are prime to bring big jobs to the county with a second amazon headquarters. >> first the county has to be chosen as the right spot. today county leaders will reveal the locations they will propose to amazon. this is part of a public competition that communities across the country are fighting for. amazon promised to invest $5 billion in whatever community it chooses. there will be 50,000 new jobs with average salaries of more than 100,00

charter tour bus slammed into a new york city bus and into a building. this was early yesterday morning. you can see the city bus there making a turn when the tour bus comes flying down the street. sources told our news partners at wnbc that when investigators found the tour bus speedometer it was frozen at 60 miles per hour. speed limit on the street is 25 miles per hour. >> the driver of the tour bus was fired as a city bus driver in 2015 after being arrested for dui hit and run. he died along with a passenger on the mta bus and a man walking on the sidewalk. so there's still question about whether the speedometer, whether it was at 60 miles an hour when the accident happened. they do think the bus was speeding. >> looking at the impact, you can imagine how horrible it was. we've told you about how so many families lost loved ones on this stretch of road. this is

route 210. in one day, 49 cars were pulled over for speeding. averaging about 78 miles an hour. right now, there is a call for action for drivers to slow down and for lawmakers to change the laws. >> we've got mothers against drunk driving for intoxicated driving. we got nothing for speeding. >> those activists met with prince george's county police at a meeting last night. even though indian head highway is a state highway, county police are responsible for patrolling it and some are asking for that to change. if you open your e-mail and spot something that says automated traffic ticket, do not open it. >> adam tuss live on road this morning with a look at a warning from police and how folks can protect themselves. good morning, adam. >> reporter: good morning aaron. this is coming from virginia state police. we are out here on 95. taking a ride around. you know, you should not open any e-mail

virginia state police are putting this out saying that this is an absolute scam that is happening. take a look at this picture that virginia state police have been tweeting out and showing people about what is going out there in people's e-mails. it's a scam that says you had an automated ticket. some sort of traffic citation and virginia state police say they do not issue those types of citations at all. so if you get something from them in the mail that says you have an automated ticket, do not open it or click on links. this is the second time in recent weeks that virginia state police have actually been hacked into and used their information to say that there's a scam that's out there. just be very wary of any e-mail or any information that comes that says that this could be an issue for you guys. >> adam, unlike d.c. and maryland, there aren't even speed cameras in northern virginia, are there? >> reporter: no. not at all, eun. that's one

this after two officers were hurt after these clashes. now, before the violence, students gathered for a vigil for 21-year-old scout schultz. he was shot and killed over the weekend by police after schultz refused to drop a knife as he approached them. at a news conference, we did hear from a family attorney for the student and they said schultz had a mental breakdown on the night of the shooting. that's the latest. >> there are a lot of questions to that investigation. angie goff, thank you. big congratulations for michelle cottrell williams. >> she was just named virginia's teacher of the year. she was honored at the richmond museum of fine arts. she's a social studies teacher at a grade school in arlington county. been teaching for 11 years. >> she goes on to compete for the national teacher of the year

maryland has been arrested and charged with first degree sexual abuse. decor sold inside a popular store is getting a lot of people talking online. you may have seen this post shared in your facebook feed. daniel ryder, from texas, posted a photo of a fake cotton plant inside a hobby lobby store. she linked the post to the store asking it to remove the item. she wrote that, quote, there is nothing decorative about raw cotton, a commodity gained at the expense of african-american slaves. some commenters have disagreed with ryder saying it is just a plant and nothing do with race. you can imagine some of the outrage and comments from that. >> so far it's been shared 19,000 times and received more than 200,000 comments. hobby lobby hasn't commented about the post or whether or not it's going to take action after seeing the dments. 5:41 our time right now. let's turn to the weather center. >> chuck be

we're keeping a close eye on major hurricane maria, which unfortunately for the u.s. territory puerto rico, is in grave danger of a direct hit. probably within the next 24 to 36 hours. there's the path. likely to be making landfall as a 4 or a 5 category storm on the east side of puerto rico. after that it threatens parts of the bahamas. after that, keep a close eye on maria. devastating news for the folks in puerto rico. sheen ha has your ten-day forecast coming right up. yesterday it was a work zone late to clear on the outer loop right here at georgia avenue. much better news today. the barrels are safely on the shoulders and traffic is moving fairly well.
