first, the massive and fast-moving hurricane maria. it is barrelling towards puerto rico and the virgin islands. dumping rain and kicking up winds as it moves closer. it plowed into the island of dominica overnight. the prime minister had to be rescued from his home when winds ripped off the roof. and here's what maria looked like when it hit guadalupe. we are working to confirm one person was killed by a fallen tree. >> people in the northeast brace for its impact there. the storm is expected to weaken as it moves closer to new england. storm team 4 is tracking every move of both of those big storms. doug is in our storm center. doug, maria just a monster of a storm. we just were talking about this. >> it's amazing the fact that we continue to talk about these incredible hurricanes. one time jose was a category 4 hurricane. now it's just off our coast line

ocean city coast line. you can see it bringing clouds and rain back towards the del mar, back towards the eastern shore and even into southern maryland, too. this storm a very large storm and it will bring tropical storm force winds to long island, up around the boston area. this one, however, the only big concern here may be some tidal flooding and beach erosion, that's it. down to the south a completely different story. we're talking about massive devastation. we already saw on the island of dominica and now it looks like we could see it around st. croix and puerto rico. the latest advisory as the 5:00 as winds of 165 miles per hour and now the national hurricane center is expecting this hurricane to maintain category 5 status right through st. croix, right through the puerto rico area. so, again, category 5 storm moving into these extremely heavily populated areas. puerto rico over 3 million people and then it moves up towards the east coast of u.s., we'll talk a little bit more about jose and maria may interact to produce something in our weather next week.

because the eyes of the political nation really are watching this race. only one of two statewide races this november. we have just 49 more days, but a lot can happen in this debate. this is the only statewide live televised debate between these two and it is happening before 400 invited guests here at the world headquarters of capital one. we are here now, we want to show you some aerials because this place is magnificent and it is growing as we speak. it will be the second tallest structure in our region, 32 stories when all is said and done. and it will be bringing about 5,000 jobs to this region. of course, jobs will be a big topic tonight. also, expect to hear about president trump, the trump factor could play a big role in this race, perhaps in this debate tonight. >> you're going to see plenty of politics between now and elti

money. and both candidates are really going to be pushed by their parties to really make this a kind of a national referendum to demonstrate that trump is more popular than some polls might suggest, or that he's going to hurt the republicans in 2018 depending on the party's point of view. >> we talk about eyeballs around the country on this race, but money is flooding into virginia, too, from the dnc, from the rnc and from a lot of outside groups, too. they want to win this because this could be a referendum on the president. it could also be a bell weather for the mid terms coming up next year. we're going to get more into that with our julie carey, our bureau chief here in northern virginia, in just a few minutes. she's going to talk about what both candidates need to do and the third candidate who is also here tonight, he's not on the stage, though, but we'll find out what's in store for him this evening when we join him next. >> a lot going on. thank you, jim. we'll check back with you in a few minutes. and a quick programming not

atrium has quieted down. 400 guests have moved into the auditorium where candidates will be taking the stage in 45 minutes. joining me now is julie carey. nobody knows politics in virginia better than julie carey. let's talk about the campaign you've been covering from the very beginning. what do gillespie and northam need to do at this point, who do they need to target? >> it's always they need to target everybody tonight because they need to get voters focused on this race. virginia traditionally kind of refolk uses attention late. but specifically there is still a big pocket of undecided voters. we've seen it in the polls that have come out in the last 15 days, 10 to 15%. they need to make a connection to those voters, get them to the polls. and in that pool there is a lot at stake for ralph northam. a bigger percentage of those undecideds identify as democrats. there are a lot of african americans who say they are undecided. ralph northam needs to get those people to the polls i

>> you know, we were talking in the break awhile ago about is virginia a purple state, is it about to turn blue? there is a lot at stake for republicans in the commonwealth and it's been a while since mcdonald won a statewide race. >> right, right. it is still right now, i think you can call it a purple state. but i was talking to the chairman of the state republican party yesterday and he was talking about how much at stake there is for republicans because he said if we don't win this statewide race after losing several cycles of statewide elections, virginia would have to be considered a blue state. so, republicans obviously a lot, a lot of importance in this race for them. >> real quickly, you are going to be on the panel asking questions tonight. but there is also a third contender who is in the house tonight. >> there is. and we don't hear a lot about the libertarian candidate cliff. he's only polling at 2 or 3%. that's why he's not on the stage. but the northern virginia chamber invited him to come tonight. he is going to be live tweeting his responses to the questions d

barbuda again. they were under hurricane watches at a time right now. i want to show you what's going on in our area from jose. this is over towards bethany bee beach. look at these waves. high tide coming in at 9:00. watch these waves. they have a heavy surf advisory and coastal flood warning in effect through tonight. waves of 8 to 11 feet. take a look at these waves as they come in. coastal flood impacts, widespread road flooding is expected in minor property damage is possible. they already had reports of minor damage to some of the piers in that area. beach erosion will continue throughout the night tonight. that's bethany. same thing going up and down our coast lines. you can see where the storm is right now. just off the coast of ocean city by about, about 220 miles or so. but there is enough influence to get all that water up there so we're going to see some flooding overnight tonight. really around the 7:00 to 11:00 hour, two hours on either side

from jose but that's about it. it's been another great day. the rape has been to the east. i-95 eastward. that's what we talked about right along the chesapeake bay. we are seeing shower activity coming down as a result of jose. i can see some of the stronger bands. these have stronger winds sornd with them, too. but they, too, will stay out to sea. what's coming on shore tonight, this will be maria. look at that eye, just an incredible eye to look at. very small eye, too, irma's eye was almost 40 miles wide. this one is only ten miles wii wide and it's moving toward st. croix. notice the little wobbles here. there is one jog to the north. does it hit st. croix directly, does it hit puerto rico direct little? on this track is expected in the national hurricane center does say they now expect it to hit puerto rico as a category 5 hurricane. there's the eye wall. just out of the south 70 miles south of st. croix, about 140 miles south of san juan, making its way up there at about 9 miles per hour. the latest

storm came down about an hour ago. 165 mile an hour winds moving west, nofrrthwest at 10 miles a hour. moving to the bahamas as a strong hurricane 4. no longer affecting turks and caicos. may stay just east of the turks and caicos. that's good news. then to the atlantic, almost all the models i'm looking at keep maria away from the east coast. that is very good news. but it brings it in a very similar position that jose is in right now and it actually helps to bring jose back into the coast. that's why tuesday and wednesday i have tracking ma maria and jose. they will play off of one another and i do think we could see some impacts from either storm during the day next tuesday and wednesday. until then, we get warm, 88 wednesday and thursday, first day of fall coming on friday is not going to feel like it, though. the weekend looking fantastic. >> enjoy the last little bit of summer. >> i like these warm temperatures, i do. coming up in sports, a huge step
