i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. we are talking about some devastating scenes we've been watching out of mexico after a 7.1 earthquake hit mexico city. we've been hearing the death toll is climbing. more than 200 people now and the rescuers are also pulling bodies out and that's been a heartbreaking development this morning. >> they did find three survivors. it's not just rescuers, parents are digging with their hands looking for their kids who they believe are trapped inside the school building. a lot of devastating news. >> two weeks ago mexico was dealing with another earthquake. this was south and west of this current situation which killed 100 people. that earthquake was an 8.1, so larger in magnitude, but because it started out in the ocean, fewer deaths in that case. >> we're going to get all of the details you need on this in a second. i want to turn and check out our local

we'll start off with storm team 4 meteorologist sheena parveen. >> good morning. mild start to this wednesday. fall is around the corner, it will be here on friday, the first day of fall. it will be feeling like summer as we go into friday and the weekend. this morning, pretty mild. 59 in ma manassas. if you're about to walk outside and at the bus stop this morning, no jacket required. 70 degrees by 7:00 a.m. lunchtime, 84 degrees. pretty warm as the kids head outside for recess. no rain in the area. by 3:00 p.m., upper 80s. it will be feeling more like summer today. the normal high is in the upper 70s for this time of year. wait until you see your weekend forecast. 5:00 a.m. advisory on hurricane maria. that's coming up in a minute. let's check on our local traffic. good morning, dave. >> good morning. southbound 270 montgomery county heading towards it.

getting by in a couple of lanes now near the county line. southbound traffic is still very slow. away from frederick. let's see if this clears. right now it is jammed for at least a couple of miles heading towards the frederick/montgomery county line. you're above and beyond heading down. on the beltway in maryland and virginia, no signs of travel in buoy. the work zone and dump truck crash have both been cleared. in virginia, 95, 395 in great shape. >> dave dildine this morning. thank you. hurricane maria makes its way over the caribbean island. take a look at this, another monster storm in the ocean. >> right in that same area. we learned about the death toll from maria in guadalupe gone up to two people. that pso

fallen tree. we want to get to sheena parveen for the track on this storm. >> this is a very similar area of irma. it's just a little bit farther south. it is moving into puerto rico. category 4. don't look at the category, because as it's updated as a category 4, before it was 5. we're only looking at the difference of a wind speed of 5 miles an hour. now as it moves through the updated track, still keeping it east of the bahamas. as we go into the weekend taking a turn up to the middle of the atlantic. maybe it will stay out to sea. here's a live look at radar coming out of puerto rico. heavy rain into the island. look at the eye. it is about to move on land.

hit with the storm. that's 155 miles an hour. either way, this is still very devastating. as we go through the next couple of days we'll see what the track is going to do. we'll take a closer look coming up. >> thank you, sheena n. puerto rico that rain is falling across the entire island. the winds are getting stronger. the landfall expected to make a direct hit on puerto rico. the governor saying the storm could hit folks with a force and violence we have not seen for several generations. breaking news, this is what we were talking about at the top of the hour. chaos in mexico. new video coming in of crews desperately trying to save people. >> take a look here at the rubble and the buildings damaged here. just incredible damage.

people were killed in this massive earthquake yesterday. people have been evacuated from their homes, from hospitals even. as much as 40% of mexico city is without power right now. at this point we don't know exactly how much damage this earthquake caused, but you can see from the video here it is really bad. almost 9 million people live here. angie goff is watching this. >> it is horrific, eun. as parents, i can't even imagine what these parents are going through right here. aaron, you mentioned they are digging through the rubble, some of them with their bare hands. they feel helpless at this point. rescuers frantically at this hour still searching for the trapped children in this school collapse. as of right now we know 22 children lost their lives here. dozens are still missing. some parents say they have been in c

through text messages. there are other rescues. there was another one that struck 32 years ago and that was huge. it took 10,000 lives. 5:07 now. depending on when you hit the roads today, you could be caught in traffic along 66 in virginia. for everyone who lives around here, you know it's easier to get snarled in traffic on that stretch highway. today virginia's governor will announce plans to ease those pains. >> news 4's justin finch live along i-66ment he's looking at the changes along the beltway. hey, justin. >> reporter: good morning. we all know 66 backups can get ugly and end fast. especially along the beltway and especially

evening commutes. smooth sailing. the governor is aiming to make the headaches we often feel a thing of the past. this afternoon the governor is set to attend an i-66 event in falls church. you're now seeing ten new transit services to make getting around 66 inside the beltway easier. those services are expected to have toll buses, enhanced car pooling and more here. the goal is to get 5,000 more people moving through 66, that corridor each day. the hope is that these changes will cut congestion by also encouraging more people to take the bus or a car full and get fewer vehicles off the roadway. of course, coming soon we told you the road is active on 66. by december single drivers can pay a toll to ride i-66 during the rush hour which will hopefully alleviate that congestion as

life for drivers who take 66 each and every day. back in to you in the studio. >> justin finch live for us on the road. thanks. 5:09. today we'll find out whether work will start on the georgetown branch trail. it's been closed in anticipation of the purple line construction that has not started yet. that could change. the judge declined to issue an immediate ruling to halt construction on the trail and that means construction could start as early as today. we turn now to decision 2017 and one of the most closely watched races of the year. the virginia governor's race. ralph northam and republican ed gilles pea squared off on the debate. this debate was mostly cordial as you might expect in virginia. the candidates agreed on some issues. things got testy when deportation and sank two wear ray cities came up. >> but

>> we don't have sanctuary cities. let's go back to that vote. it was an interesting day. it came up, a republican voted in favor of it, and it created a tie. and i was proud to break a tie because we don't have a problem with sanctuary cities. >> now the candidates were also asked about metro funding. they both agreed the transit agency is important to northern virginia. neither would commit to the money, putting more money into the metro situation without getting any information how it will make its challenges. we didn't get a commitment. >> what's the question that people had. they were curious about the monuments? >> that was one of the big issues that kept rising to the top. i asked a question about race relations in virginia, how the

>> so this may not be the best time to take a dip in the ocean. jose continues to weaken as it moves north and east. coming up in a few minutes, our sheena parveen will give us the full forecast for the day ahead. a ninth person has died from the florida nursing home. the man was 93 years old. it had been three days since irma blew into florida when the nursing home staff finally called 911. the lack of air conditioning made it unbearably hot inside the nursing home. 145 patients had to be relocated. you see that happening in some of the video from last week. this is now a criminal investigation into why staff didn't call for help sooner. >> there were some reports about taking care of the people who were left. it's so awful. >> 5:17 right now. developing this morning, an urgent plea from prince george's county police to lock your doors and windows, especially at night. >> we told you about this case on saturday. police say a college park

intruder around 3:30 in the morning. dorothy spencer is live to explain why this investigation is now widening. darcy, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. i can tell you this is something that is definitely concerning residents here in college park as well as students. this is gilford road. a lot of students rent out houses here. it's a couple of blocks south of the university of maryland campus. police are now investigating three separate incidents along gilford road. they were already investigating that sexual assault you mentioned saturday. it happened around 3:30 in the morning here in the 4500 block. a man came in from an unlocked window, a woman screamed and he ran away. police were speaking to neighbors and learned there were two other incidents in the very same block. one earlier that day, the other happened on september 9th. both of those incidents happening right around 1:00 in the morning. now the man got in thrgh

with winds at 145 miles an hour. very heavy rain. extreme wind. this is going to be devastating here and then it's going to move out into atlantic. hurricane maria continues mostly east of the bahamas. here the coast takes it out taking the sharp north turn. we'll see where it ends up mid week next week. typically if the storm stays east of the bahamas, it remains off shore. we could be seeing it pretty close mid week next week by wednesday or so. temperature wise about to walk out the door. mid to upper 60s. 68 leesburg. forecast looking pretty good. 70 degrees by 7:00 a.m. by 3:00 p.m. feeling like summer. talking about the mid 80s. we're locally dry, maybe a few sprinkles. what we had yesterday is a tropical storm, that's jose. off the coast line and not dealing with it today. look

balloons were released into the sky in southeast d.c. for talata williams. she was killed over the weekend. she used a ride share service to get home from work. d.c. police say a pickup truck hit the car she was riding in head on. this is on good hope road saturday night. williams driver and the truck drivers are now in serious condition at the hospital. her family blames the truck driver for cutting her life short. >> why? why was you on the other side of the street? my sister was on her way home from work. >> the driver has not been charged with any crime. they're waiting for toxicology results to see if that person was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. a lot of people have talked about this issue, speed cameras in d.c., and the question whether they're designed to make money. a lot of people say that's the whole point. well, because of the news 4 report the d.c. council is looking i
