of the campaign behind them virginia's top candidates are heading into the final phase of the race and as the new tv ads just released a few days ago are any indication the tone maybe about to change by the end. julie and tracy are with us this morning. most people agree they sort of came off as very much like southern gentlemen. who do you think had the strongest performance. >> a agree. they were on their best behavior and i do hate to call a winner or a loser but let me talk about what i think both accomplished. i think he did a good job of meeting the goal i think he had for himself. his challenge is to reach out to two different camps. the trump fans and the never trumpers and on the side of the trump fans we heard him talk about things that would appeal to him like

on confederate memorials he wants them to stay in the public space with more historical context. now the more moderate republicans a lot of whom are in our audience, he really tried to portray himself as a guy who wants to drive virginia's economy. somebody that knows the numbers so we even heard him drop the name of senator john warner. one of the best known moderate republicans. i think he was saying i'm a john warner kind of republican. on the other side, i don't think he capitalized on the evening as well as he could have. there's still a lot of undecided voters out there and the polls we got this week show they identify more as democrats and he needs to reach them and get them motivated to go to the polls.
6:17 am
>> during the campaign we heard rhetoric we didn't hear repeated during the debate. name labeling i'll say. do you think it matters to voters what the tone is? and do they judge the debates differently than the rest of the campaign? >> that's a good question. the candidates and their campaigns have gauged there's some desire out there for a more civil debate. but on the flip side they both dropped very negative campaign ads. the most negative of this cycle so that's an open question to me. will the voters fault them now for the negative ads. will they see them as separate things. can they remain untarnished. >> so they needo

undecided to the polls. >> we wondered whether folks would be in that camp but polls showed 90% of them say they'll vote for him. on the democratic side those that identify with democrats, it's people in the middle that they really have to get fired up. >> one of the issues that came up during the debate was amazon, amazon's new headquaters, the quest for new headquaters. prince george's is making a full-court press. tell us about it. >> yeah, amazon, hq2. everybody is hoping to be incl.

salary of 100,000 per employee. so prince george's county is looking for economic development and opportunities to have more jobs. inside of the county and they were on the final list and it didn't happen but they were finalists. that's a huge deal for the county. they have mgm in there and they're about to have a new medical center as well so they feel they are poised to compete for these. they were saying i want to see amazon come and have all kind of conversations and the county executive wanted to get on officially say prince george's county could be a goodloe kags and we're interested. >> is the county offering or talking about financial incentives or are incentives an issue when you're talking about amazon. >>nc

unbelievable that we have these cases happening in one block different apartment houses. all student housing. and three women were involved in three of the break ins and attempted break ins and then we have a group of male students that had their apartment broken into and quite a few items taken out as well. police are still looking to see if this is all connected. one incident happened last weekend that resulted in the sexual assault of a woman. she woke up and screamed and the guy runs out. shortly before that someone's apartment is broken into into the apartment house next door. they took out computers and some other expensive things and before that there was a girl that we talked to that says she was in her apartment and sees a hand come through the window and she screams what are you doing? i'm going to call the police and the person snatches her handbag and runs so whoever was involved in this

15-year-old boy has raised a lot of questions over the past week. the county prosecutor says it appeared to have been a justified shooting. his family says it was murder. some observers question the police response in this case. they were responding to a possible hostage situation. what are your thoughts on this case and how it might have been handled. how was it handled by the police here. >> well, first of all, tragedy all the way around. the loss of life of a 15-year-old. this young man tried to take his life the night before. his father was out of the country and he's the one that makes the 911 call to say that there a

6:27 am
other departments have the option of rubber bullets sometimes so would there not have been a way to try to use less than lethal force? and we have seen in fairfax county that emerged from a very bad police involved shooting that resulted in charges against one of the officers they have retooled and revamped their whole approach to these crisis situations and they had been working very hard to train all of their officers. in addition we have been able to spotlight that they have been able to use less than lethal force. they were still able to deescalate that and use less than lethal force. >> changes and procedures. another very disturbing case involving a pregnant
