neighbor looking for help, but it was too late. he collapsed against a post and fell dead to the ground. >> he was coming for help. when i opened the door, i see him on the ground. >> reporter: the family says that flores, jr., is in the service. that from time to time he lives with his father here. amanda flores is the victim's sister. what brought this on? >> i have no idea. i wish -- i wish i know. they used to get along very good. i just -- i have the feeling that alcohol have a lot to do with this tragedy. >> reporter: as the day wore on, friends and family gathered at the murder scene trying to make some sense of this bloody, violent attack that has torn this family apart.

>> we never experienced any death in our family, not this close. and we are devastated. we're in pain. we are in pain. >> reporter: hector flores, jr., in jail tonight facing murder charges. in leesburg, pat collins, news 4. >> we want to pick it up right here at the live desk. we have some breaking news coming in. just learned about this. we want to take you live out now to the parking lot at white flint plaza where they have just discovered a body in a car of the parking lost. now, this is on nicholson lane in rockville. to give you perspective, we're talking about white flint park, metro station. just in the last 15 minutes, they found a body unresponsive in that car. they called the police

that area taped off. several police cars surrounding that area. the person is dead. it is still way too early to know how that happened. i think right now they would be looking possibly -- looking through their records to see if there are any missing persons cases in montgomery county. again, police there on the scene. we'll keep monitoring it and as soon as we get more information we'll be sure to bring it to you. ♪ and the rockets red glare ♪ >> more protests like this one expected during monday night football tonight. nfl players banding together against the president after his criticism of players who kneel during the national anthem. it is not just football. this is a debate that is consuming the sports world. today wizards guard bradley beale had harsh words for the president. >> to me you're a clown. like you're -- that's -- like that's unacceptable.

>> we have team coverage tonight. we're going to begin with meagan fitzgerald with both sides of this debate going on in the district. >> reporter: yeah, wendy, the uproar over the nfl protests is certainly grabbing the attention of young high school athletes like the ones behind me here on the field of roosevelt high school here in northwest. they're watching very closely. so, we reached out to a lot of different public school districts and they say, look, if students want to protest at their own sporting events they have the right to do so. but we also touched base with a lot of other folks who say they believe these professional athletes are setting a bad example. ♪ for so many americans, the national anthem is a sign of pride and respect for our nation. this weekend it has become a platform for widespread protests by nfl players. last year colin kaepernick took a knee to speak out against police brutality towards african

americans. but after president trump's latest tweets and remarks -- >> i think it is very disrespectful to our country. i think it's very, very disrespectful to our flag. >> reporter: more and more players are kneeling or locking arms in solidarity. >> i don't think it's wrong. i think they're just expressing themselves, using their first amendment rights. >> reporter: but it is an expression that offends some veterans like doug rich. >> i think it's a shame and digs grace to tower country and i am fed up with the nfl. >> reporter: so folks like rich say they won't be attending nfl games any more. >> these young people are protesting state violence. that's what they're doing. and if wre are to take the firs amendment of the constitution seriously, they are well within their rights. >> reporter: dr. greg carr from howard university says not only do the players have the right to protest, but it is not uncommon. >> athletes have platforms. entertainers have platforms. and this is well within the tradition of entertainers, public figures, athletes using their platforms to speak to public issues.

hurricane center. winds at 80 miles an hour, it is moving slowly to the north at 7 miles an hour. and it is still a category 1 hurricane. this is what we can expect by tomorrow afternoon. still a cat 1 hurricane. you can see mainly off the coast of north carolina. it then weakens to a tropical storm. wednesday afternoon thankfully it takes a nice curve out to see. but what can folks in the outer banks expect? well, take a look. we are under tropical storm warnings pretty much from the virginia, north carolina border down to just north of the wilmington area. so, gusts anywhere around 50 miles per hour in the warnings. that is going to lead to high surf, beach erosion, rip currents, also storm surge, flooding in those areas. here at our beaches we're talking about breezy conditions with rip currents here on into the weekend. i'll have more on our weather here when you humidity breaks and when fall returns at 5:25. >> we have some breaking news for you this afternoon. a metro bus has crashed on

a former police officer is in jail tonight, arrested this weekend near the white house. after officers found an awful lot of guns, knives and ammunition in the trunk of his car, the man just appeared in d.c. superior court late this afternoon. news 4 mark segraves is there with not only more on the security scare, but why this former police officer came to the district. >> reporter: yeah, wendy, a lot of unanswered questions in court today. what we do know is yesterday morning a secret service officer noticed the suspect urinating by the side of his car jus

he also noticed on his car license plate it indicated that he might be a police officer so he asked him, do you have any guns? when he searched that man's car, he found a small arsenal inside. 37-year-old timothy bates was arrested by secret service officers sunday morning after he was seen urinating outside the gallery across the street from the white house. a search of his car found multiple weapons including an ak-47, a glok hand gun and a silencer as well as a machine gun. police say most of the guns were loaded. bates was a police officer in memphis, tennessee for 13 years. he left that department in 2013 with a medical discharge. according to court documents, bates told police he was at the white house to see either general mattis or admiral rogers about missing paychecks and to get a dog chip removed from his head, which he said had been implanted by the cia. he was taken to a hospital for a mental healthva

today. his defense attorney said she did not think he needed further mental evaluation. bates is charged with multiple weapons violations in addition to the guns, he also had knives, brass knuckles and a small club known as a black jack. he told police he had been injured while he was a police officer in memphis, and had suffered headaches, shaking, and convulsions ever since. he also said it was after the injury in memphis that the cia began cyber torturing him. now, what we also learned from court records today is that he was discharged medically from the police department in memphis in 2013, but earlier this year he was involuntary committed to a mental hospital for mental issues. he was released from then and in july he had another altercation with police. it is unclear where that altercation in july took place. we do know that this case in d.c. superior court, because he had a machine gun, could get transferred to f

that is the very latest here. jim, back to you. >> mark segraves, mark, thank you. jonathan tran jumped a white house fence, romed the grounds undetected for 15 minutes in march you may recall. instead of jail time he received two months probation at his sentencing today. prosecutors sought a six-month sentence. he was mentally ill and obsessed with president trump and wanted to warn him about so-called fake news. >> a killing inside the apartment of a university of maryland student happened at a complex that's popular with college kids. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins has more on this from college park. >> reporter: davie serpas is in custody charged with shooting two people and killing one inside the sechl inspring apartments in college park. those close to the investigation say the apartment was rented by college students including one who attends the university of maryland. there is crime tape outside the building

police say sunday morning a party ended with an argument and shots fired. none of the victims were students. 24-year-old rogelio of silver spring was shot and killed. a second victim who has not been named is expected to survive. the apartment complex is home to a large number of umd students. the university's shuttle makes multiple stops here. students are shocked something like this could happen where they live. >> i had no idea that had happened that day. that's crazy. that's just so sad. >> it is very frightening, especially my baby, he goes to school here, you know. yeah, but thank god we were not here during the weekend. >> reporter: i talked with the university of maryland police and asked why there wasn't an alert sent out to the campus to let them know about what happened here. they are saying even though they do that for some off-campus incidents, this one is technically outside of the area that they send alerts for. reporting live in college park, i'm tracee wilkins. back to youn

>> tracee, thank you. the deadline is fast approaching for republicans to pass the latest effort to repeal and replace obamacare. inside capitol hill, hundreds lined up for hours ahead of of the hearing graham/cassidy bill. dozens wound up being arrested, taken out by capital police officers. the gop has made some revisions to try to court enough votes before sunday when they'll need more than 50 votes to pass it. nbc's mark murry with a look at where things stand. >> reporter: the republican sponsors of the senate legislation on health care have tried to make the legislation more palatable to win over some holdovers like alaska senator lisa murkowski, to maybe help them with a senator rand paul of kentucky. but right now it doesn't seem that the overtures have worked so far. the hard nose are from rand paul as well as john mccain, the senator from arizona.
