for help. and that is where he collapsed and died. >> tonight his 28-year-old son is locked up and our pat collins is live for us in leesburg. pat, you spoke to the victim's sister today. >> reporter: there's a lot of sorrow here today, jim. you know, this was an argument that led to a fight that ended in a case of murder. a father is dead. a son is charged. the weapon, kitchen knife. great sorrow at the leesburg home of 47-year-old hector anthony flores, sr. mr. flores murdered here last night, stabbed by his son, 28-year-old hector anthony flores, jr. at the nearby police headquarters, flores, jr., turned himself in to the cops. after it happened, the wounded mr. flores went t

neighbor looking for help, but it was too late. he collapsed against a post and fell dead to the ground. >> he was coming for help. when i opened the door, i see him on the ground. >> reporter: the family says that flores, jr., is in the service. that from time to time he lives with his father here. amanda flores is the victim's sister. what brought this on? >> i have no idea. i wish -- i wish i know. they used to get along very good. i just -- i have the feeling that alcohol have a lot to do with this tragedy. >> reporter: as the day wore on, friends and family gathered at the murder scene trying to make some sense of this bloody, violent attack that has torn this family apart.

>> we never experienced any death in our family, not this close. and we are devastated. we're in pain. we are in pain. >> reporter: hector flores, jr., in jail tonight facing murder charges. in leesburg, pat collins, news 4. >> we want to pick it up right here at the live desk. we have some breaking news coming in. just learned about this. we want to take you live out now to the parking lot at white flint plaza where they have just discovered a body in a car of the parking lost. now, this is on nicholson lane in rockville. to give you perspective, we're talking about white flint park, metro station. just in the last 15 minutes, they found a body unresponsive in that car. they called the police

that area taped off. several police cars surrounding that area. the person is dead. it is still way too early to know how that happened. i think right now they would be looking possibly -- looking through their records to see if there are any missing persons cases in montgomery county. again, police there on the scene. we'll keep monitoring it and as soon as we get more information we'll be sure to bring it to you. ♪ and the rockets red glare ♪ >> more protests like this one expected during monday night football tonight. nfl players banding together against the president after his criticism of players who kneel during the national anthem. it is not just football. this is a debate that is consuming the sports world. today wizards guard bradley beale had harsh words for the president. >> to me you're a clown. like you're -- that's -- like that's unacceptable.

>> we have team coverage tonight. we're going to begin with meagan fitzgerald with both sides of this debate going on in the district. >> reporter: yeah, wendy, the uproar over the nfl protests is certainly grabbing the attention of young high school athletes like the ones behind me here on the field of roosevelt high school here in northwest. they're watching very closely. so, we reached out to a lot of different public school districts and they say, look, if students want to protest at their own sporting events they have the right to do so. but we also touched base with a lot of other folks who say they believe these professional athletes are setting a bad example. ♪ for so many americans, the national anthem is a sign of pride and respect for our nation. this weekend it has become a platform for widespread protests by nfl players. last year colin kaepernick took a knee to speak out against police brutality towards african

americans. but after president trump's latest tweets and remarks -- >> i think it is very disrespectful to our country. i think it's very, very disrespectful to our flag. >> reporter: more and more players are kneeling or locking arms in solidarity. >> i don't think it's wrong. i think they're just expressing themselves, using their first amendment rights. >> reporter: but it is an expression that offends some veterans like doug rich. >> i think it's a shame and digs grace to tower country and i am fed up with the nfl. >> reporter: so folks like rich say they won't be attending nfl games any more. >> these young people are protesting state violence. that's what they're doing. and if wre are to take the firs amendment of the constitution seriously, they are well within their rights. >> reporter: dr. greg carr from howard university says not only do the players have the right to protest, but it is not uncommon. >> athletes have platforms. entertainers have platforms. and this is well within the tradition of entertainers, public figures, athletes using their platforms to speak to public issues.

side you're on, the simple act of taking a knee has certainly started a national conversation. >> i understand why they're doing it. this country has unfinished business where we're still striving towards equality and justice and fairness for everyone. >> they have a right to do it. i don't think it's the best thing to do. >> reporter: so, school districts like montgomery county, prince george's county, here in d.c. all say if students do protest at their own events, they will not be penalized in any way. we did reach out to fairfax county. they tell us they are preparing a statement so, jim and wendy, we expect to receive that here soon. >> a lot of eyeballs coast to coast are on the football fields. that's for sure. meagan, thanks so much. players on our local teams, i was at the redskins game last night getting quite emotional about president trump's recent comments. >> the skins displaying unity last night, you heard the wizards expressing strong words, sherri burruss joins us

>> you said it, you saw the demonstration with the nfl players. today nba players are sounding off. not only did president trump take a stab at the nfl, he disinvited the nba champion golden state warriors because one of the best players in the league and on that team, steph curry, was hesitating oncoming according to trump. so, he withdrew his invest tafgs. the wizards weighed in and i asked bradley beale on his thoughts on the president's latest actions. >> to me you're a clown. like you're -- like that's -- that's unacceptable. like, that's not what a leader does. like your job is supposed to bring everybody together. and everybody in the world feels like since you got in office that hasn't been the case. >> i don't like anything he's been saying. i don't respect it. i feel like you can't control what people want to do and we have a bigger issues in this world that you need to be focusing on instead of focusing on people taking a knee. >> reporter: the redskins on fedex field l

choosing to kneel. that emotion felt hours later. >> when the president says this is not about race, what do you say? >> tah what president? i don't have a president. he was chosen, true, but when a president acts like that, what do you say to that? i mean, that's not someone that stands for dignity, pride, respect, honor. where is the honor in that? >> i heard earlier today locking arms is cool, right? it's cool. but it's the same thing. we're together. we're bringing awareness to something that needs to be addressed. and we all know what that is. it's equality. that's what it is, and that's what guys are fighting for. if you want to make it right, then help. help out the cause instead of turning people against you as the president of the united states of america. then help make it right. >> now, we aren't sure if the redskins will continue to link arms during the national anthem for the rest of the season, but as t

scott brooks said the team hasn't made a decision if they'll do anything, but whatever they do, he says, guys, it will be done together. >> stay tuned. all right. sherri, thanks so much. >> thank you, sherri. >> the situation in puerto rico remains dire tonight after nearly a week after hurricane maria battered that island for much of puerto rico, the power remains off still and could stay that way for up to six more months or even longer. flooding has cut off some communities, wiping out bridges, threatening the integrity of dams there. take a look. there has been a major breakdown for communications and that's impacting the efforts of first responders. >> this is a disaster that's still unfolding, though, on many parts of the island. >> it is. and we just don't know of it because we can't get communications with most people. >> virginia task force one which had a team on the ground in puerto rico to conduct search and rescues as well as damage assessments will be coming back

hurricane center. winds at 80 miles an hour, it is moving slowly to the north at 7 miles an hour. and it is still a category 1 hurricane. this is what we can expect by tomorrow afternoon. still a cat 1 hurricane. you can see mainly off the coast of north carolina. it then weakens to a tropical storm. wednesday afternoon thankfully it takes a nice curve out to see. but what can folks in the outer banks expect? well, take a look. we are under tropical storm warnings pretty much from the virginia, north carolina border down to just north of the wilmington area. so, gusts anywhere around 50 miles per hour in the warnings. that is going to lead to high surf, beach erosion, rip currents, also storm surge, flooding in those areas. here at our beaches we're talking about breezy conditions with rip currents here on into the weekend. i'll have more on our weather here when you humidity breaks and when fall returns at 5:25. >> we have some breaking news for you this afternoon. a metro bus has crashed on

a former police officer is in jail tonight, arrested this weekend near the white house. after officers found an awful lot of guns, knives and ammunition in the trunk of his car, the man just appeared in d.c. superior court late this afternoon. news 4 mark segraves is there with not only more on the security scare, but why this former police officer came to the district. >> reporter: yeah, wendy, a lot of unanswered questions in court today. what we do know is yesterday morning a secret service officer noticed the suspect urinating by the side of his car jus

he also noticed on his car license plate it indicated that he might be a police officer so he asked him, do you have any guns? when he searched that man's car, he found a small arsenal inside. 37-year-old timothy bates was arrested by secret service officers sunday morning after he was seen urinating outside the gallery across the street from the white house. a search of his car found multiple weapons including an ak-47, a glok hand gun and a silencer as well as a machine gun. police say most of the guns were loaded. bates was a police officer in memphis, tennessee for 13 years. he left that department in 2013 with a medical discharge. according to court documents, bates told police he was at the white house to see either general mattis or admiral rogers about missing paychecks and to get a dog chip removed from his head, which he said had been implanted by the cia. he was taken to a hospital for a mental healthva

today. his defense attorney said she did not think he needed further mental evaluation. bates is charged with multiple weapons violations in addition to the guns, he also had knives, brass knuckles and a small club known as a black jack. he told police he had been injured while he was a police officer in memphis, and had suffered headaches, shaking, and convulsions ever since. he also said it was after the injury in memphis that the cia began cyber torturing him. now, what we also learned from court records today is that he was discharged medically from the police department in memphis in 2013, but earlier this year he was involuntary committed to a mental hospital for mental issues. he was released from then and in july he had another altercation with police. it is unclear where that altercation in july took place. we do know that this case in d.c. superior court, because he had a machine gun, could get transferred to f

that is the very latest here. jim, back to you. >> mark segraves, mark, thank you. jonathan tran jumped a white house fence, romed the grounds undetected for 15 minutes in march you may recall. instead of jail time he received two months probation at his sentencing today. prosecutors sought a six-month sentence. he was mentally ill and obsessed with president trump and wanted to warn him about so-called fake news. >> a killing inside the apartment of a university of maryland student happened at a complex that's popular with college kids. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins has more on this from college park. >> reporter: davie serpas is in custody charged with shooting two people and killing one inside the sechl inspring apartments in college park. those close to the investigation say the apartment was rented by college students including one who attends the university of maryland. there is crime tape outside the building

police say sunday morning a party ended with an argument and shots fired. none of the victims were students. 24-year-old rogelio of silver spring was shot and killed. a second victim who has not been named is expected to survive. the apartment complex is home to a large number of umd students. the university's shuttle makes multiple stops here. students are shocked something like this could happen where they live. >> i had no idea that had happened that day. that's crazy. that's just so sad. >> it is very frightening, especially my baby, he goes to school here, you know. yeah, but thank god we were not here during the weekend. >> reporter: i talked with the university of maryland police and asked why there wasn't an alert sent out to the campus to let them know about what happened here. they are saying even though they do that for some off-campus incidents, this one is technically outside of the area that they send alerts for. reporting live in college park, i'm tracee wilkins. back to youn

>> tracee, thank you. the deadline is fast approaching for republicans to pass the latest effort to repeal and replace obamacare. inside capitol hill, hundreds lined up for hours ahead of of the hearing graham/cassidy bill. dozens wound up being arrested, taken out by capital police officers. the gop has made some revisions to try to court enough votes before sunday when they'll need more than 50 votes to pass it. nbc's mark murry with a look at where things stand. >> reporter: the republican sponsors of the senate legislation on health care have tried to make the legislation more palatable to win over some holdovers like alaska senator lisa murkowski, to maybe help them with a senator rand paul of kentucky. but right now it doesn't seem that the overtures have worked so far. the hard nose are from rand paul as well as john mccain, the senator from arizona.

well, fall began on, what, friday? it is beginning to set in. >> 90, right? >> about three degrees away from a record-high temperature. i want to go back to maria quickly and show you a stunning image i shared on my facebook and twitter. you want to check it out. it is a telling image of just how bad this situation there is. this is from noaa satellite. a before and after of maria. this is a satellite night image of puerto rico and you can see the before, all the bright light there. those are the lights on. the one in the imagery below, can barely see anything. almost looks completely black. that is because the power grid was knocked out. millions still there without electricity. so, again, that image is on my facebook and twitter pages. currently here back at home, like wendy was saying, it is

88 in washington as well as leesburg. and 88 degrees in annapolis as well. we have some high clouds out there, but the radar completely dry right now. exactly what we want for a monday evening. already starting, though, to see some bands from maria move into parts of north korea out around the kill devil hills area and approaching hatteras right now as well. on tuesday, you can probably leave the sunglasses at home. looking at plenty of clouds that will thicken throughout the day. you don't need the small umbrella either unless you live in southern maryland. small chance for isolated shower there. tomorrow for the kids, it's once again t-shirt weather. 6:00 a.m. we're in the low 70s, right around 72. it's humid. by 8:00 a.m., we haven't warmed up all that much as the sun comes up. we are still at 73. it is dry for everybody as we get out the door on our tuesday. a high temperature of 83 degrees, plenty of clouds throughout the day and again still noticing that mugginess. we really don't see the humidity drop here until our thursday. so the weather despite the humidity, though

here with the live desk, we want to update you on the breaking news that could affect the commute home. a metro bus crashed on southbound 395. we just learned three people have been injured, fortunately, none of them all that seriously. the 21 d bus was on its way to lan mark mall when it hit a concrete barrier. you're looking at a live picture of the scene between duke street and seminary road. it is affecting traffic in both directions. you can see folks are getting by to the right of that crash scene. we'll keep an eye on 395. back to you. >> chris lawrence, thank you. a new proposal in the district targets private employers who offer free or subsidized parking to their employees. a bill now before the d.c. council would require those employers to offeree kwal benefits to workers who take mass transit or bike to work. tom sherwood reports it's an effort to help reduce traffic congestion.

>> reporter: heavy traffic, every workday the district's population nearly doubles. a steady building boom means more people, more cars. many people have turned to bikes and mass transit. >> i mostly bike because commuting in the city is hard. >> our study shows d.c. is the 9th most congested city in the united states and the congestion is only getting worz. >> reporter: ward 6 council man says private employers already subsidize employee parking. his new bill would require employers to do the same for those who bike, walk, or take mass transit to help reduce traffic problems. it won easy support on the street. >> supporting people who get around by bicycle is a really great thing. >> i think you should only give discounts to people who use public transportation. we have enough cars around here. >> reporter: but local business groups caution the bill could force employers to drop the free parking, or cause

administrative headaches to figure out the equal benefits. >> economically how does this impact economic development and investments we're making -- the city is making? >> reporter: councilmember allen and mary chase say everyone benefits from balanced transportation. >> i don't think this is something that actually is bad for business. i think it's good for business. >> reporter: the employee parking bill and another measure allowing school teachers to park in restricted neighborhood areas could be voted on later this year. in the district, tom sherwood, news 4. >> an emotional end to a walk that covered nearly 700 miles. demetrius nashe teared up today as congressman john lewis thanked him for raising awareness about gun violence. nashe walked from the south side of chicago here to the district saying he was -- he used to deal drugs but now he wants to be part of the solution and hopes to inspire young men to put down their guns and

will build community centers instead. >> as friends and family remember a young teen gunned down in d.c., we are learning more about the message zaire kelly gave his family the night he was killed. kelly was heading home when another teenager tried to rob him and we learned that teen tried to rob say air's brother. kristin wright is at thurgood marshall high school where they are honoring him. kristin? >> reporter: jim, one of the teaches said to me one of the sad est things to her is zaire was doing the right things yet his life was taken violently. the gym inside the school filled with young people who are so sad that this young man is gone. his track team getting on stage as their coach spoke about zaire. but today is not so much about the grief inside thurgood, marshall, it isut

an angry mob. >> elizabeth green, jefferson thomas, terrence roberts, carlota waltz lanier, mini jean brown, they wilma they were knos the little rock 9. they enrolled after the supreme court outlawed segregation. many states still refused to integrate. on the first day of school, the governor of arkansas used the national guard to surround the school and block the little rock 9 from entering. weeks later, after a tense standoff, on september 25th, 1967, president dwight eisenhower intervened and sent a military escort for the students. today the eight surviving members of the group were honored during a ceremony in arkansas, and they didn't hold back on where they think the country now stands on race relations 60 years later. >> when are

a popular weight loss app is losing customers who joined hoping they could get cash for losing weight. the federal trade commission has gone after the app's developers for making these false promises. >> and our consumer reporter susan hogan joins us now with what we need to know to get paid back. not that i signed up for it, susan. >> you don't need it. well, this app is appropriately called the pact app, p-a-c-t. they make commitments to fitness goals and they get cash

reached. according to the ftc instead of getting their cash, many customers were getting unfairly billed. it works like this. customers agree to exercise a certain number of times a week. if they don't, they actually agree to be automatically charged between 5 and $50 per missed activity. if you meet your goals, customers are supposed to receive a share of the money collected. but the ftc says pact app charged tens of thousands of dollars to customers who met their goals. the ftc reached a settlement agreement with the app developers who have agreed to refund all of the their customers. now more than $940,000. pact has already begun the refund process. of course we tried to reach out to the company for a comment but we have not heard back from the pact app. back to you. >> a lot of money. >> i'm

up. we were shedding layers because it was so darn hot down there, amelia. >> yeah, 92 yesterday, 91 today, tomorrow low 80s. it's going down. >> we're heading in the right direction. >> slowly by surely. by the weekend it is going to feel very much like fall out there. it is only monday so let's get through the rest of the workweek. here are your weather headlines. take a look. it is going to not only be humid, but kind of on the warm side, on the hot side through wednesday. so, that is your first weather headline. feeling like summer through the middle part of the week. thursday is our transition day. those humidity levels drop. we have a nice breeze. and then friday on into the weekend, it's feeling like fall. you can turnoff the acs, might even have to turn the heat on especially on sunday morning. i'll make sure to point that out to you on the ten-day. you can see pretty much everybody in the upper 80s to low 90s. there's that 91 in washington as well as frederick. your planner for tomorrow. we start off the day very similar to today. temperature wise, at 72 degrees. but more clouds

still nice. we do keep it dry. by lunch time it is not as hot. only in the mid 70s at that point, 76 degrees. a high tomorrow afternoon of 83 degrees. with more clouds around from start to finish for the most part, mostly cloudy skies. clouds act like a blanket, keeping the sunshine out of the area. 7:00 p.m. it is still humid and still kind of mild out there. 79 degrees at that point. maybe an isolated shower tomorrow afternoon in southern maryland. but for most of us it is dry and we're just going to be talking about the humidity. this is through wednesday, kind of in that muggy and oppressive range. as we look to our thursday, well, the humidity levels start to lower, starting to feel more like fall on thursday. and by friday it's comfortable. not only comfortable, but refreshing and that trend continues on into the weekend. take a look. on saturday a high temperature of 72 degrees. relatively speaking, feeling kind of cool out there on saturday as we look to sunday, high temperature of 73 degrees. now, saturday morning i am seeing a very small chance for an isolad

people in montgomery county are already starting to see changes to their neighborhood because of the purple line. and today crews were out early cutting down trees in silver spring. news 4's adam tuss has a closer look at the impact of the new construction. >> reporter: take a look as these crews are out here cutting down trees in this neighborhood. this is flower avenue in silver spring. down goes the trees and the residents are here watching what's going on. now, a lot of them know about the purple line, but still for some, this work is a shock. trees coming down. one after the next. most of these
