what to wear today, short sleeves and sunglasses. the temperatures near 70 now. 85 today. cooler weather by the weekend. details coming up later on in the show. back to the news. breaking news in laurel. one person badly hurt in a crash that they had to be airlifted to the hospital. >> take a look at the scene here. right now, you can see the car went totally off the road and into those trees. first responders trying to extract that car from that area. this happened on the bw parkway near 197 in laurel. news 4's justin finch is live with more on the major impact this is having on traffic right now. justin, what are you seeing? >> reporter: eun, good morning. minutes before 6:00 a.m., we got word that that wrecked vehicle had been towed away and also that the left lane of the southbound bw parkway here was remaining closed. but traffic was moving on the right-hand side.

we saw an immediate impact once that word came down. traffic really moving in a way it was not a few minutes ago. traffic is being diverted on to route 197. i want to take you now to the skies here. this is chopper 4 looking down on the scene here where perhaps by this point, you can see movement going on out here. this was completely blocked for a very long time here. the southbound bw parkway lanes. those closures had extended between route 197 and powder mill road. on the ground, park police confirming to us, this appears to be a single vehicle crash. one person was injured. and the park police helicopter got that person to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. hours later, the wreck and response did block the southbound bw parkway lanes. again, looking live. you are seeing traffic move here on the southbound parkway lanes. however, you may still find backups making your way out this morn

the storm. >> 4:00 in the morning, the hotel, the structural engineers were up with us. we pulled the teams out of their rooms at 6:00 and went to the safe zones. we were in those areas until 7:00 that night as it went over. >> the members of maryland task force one from montgomery county are still on the ground in puerto rico, helping with the growing humanitarian crisis there. right now hurricane maria is close enough to be causing problems for people in the united states and it's affecting one place that's already had problems this year. angie goff is at the live desk with what's going on in the outer banks. >> that's what they're thinking here tourists are being forced to flee north carolina beaches. this time, though, because of the storm. because of maria threatening the outer banks. this is on ocracoke island. there's a tropical storm warning in place right now. we know that storm surges, they expect to see themtw

4 feet. that could be very dangerous. tourists are evacuating by ferry. some residents allowed to stay there. last month, you might recall when the construction crew cut that underground cable, that line, causing a massive blackout. an evacuation during a peak vacation weekend. this time because of maria. a storm that seems like it doesn't want to go away. eun, aaron. >> angie, thank you. we continue to monitor the track of maria and the impact of the storm. >> sheena parveen has been watching for the update on this all morning. what do we know now? >> it's still a category 1 hurricane. you're right, we've been watching this for a really long time. it's the closest to the u.s. -- the hurricane is still maintaining that category 1 strength off the coast of north carolina. but it's maxed out at

this is barely hanging on to category 1 hurricane strength. take a look at the track now. going to keep moving north and it's going to take a sharp turn out to sea. that's because of a cold front moving through that. cold front will help to push it offshore. that will bring us nice fall weather finally. we have a huge temperature drop in the forecast. we'll take a closer look at that coming up. sheena, thank you. 6:07 now. today, dogs from the hurricane battered british virgin islands will arrive in frederick, maryland. >> the dogs were rescued from tortola. that was the story during hurricane irma. take a look. this is video of a group of dogs arriving at the greenbrier veterinary hospital in frederick last week. a new round of dogs will be received today. they found the dogs wandering around a destroyed animal shelter. since hurricane irma hit, r

400 animals. two sides of the debate being heard today. first, everyone would welcome more money in their paychecks. the other side of this. not all business this is montgomery county can afford a minimum wage increase. both sides will be at a meeting in rockville. here's what's being considered. a bill to allow businesses with fewer than 25 employees to wait until 2022 to raise their wages to $15 an hour. many business owners say raising the minimum wage too fast could end their businesses. county executive ike leggett vetoed a similar bill in january. it's 6:08. maybe you used to shop at the landmark mall or drive past a spot where it's getting a makeover. until that happens, the land could be used to help the homeless. an alexandria shelter leased the former macy's site to turn it into a homeless shelter. they say the shelter w

investigators looking for clues. chopper 4 was over white flint mall yesterday afternoon. a man's body was found inside a car there. you can see investigators searching the scene. no word yet on how that man died. angie goff at the live desk. frantic evacuations continue near anaheim, california. the fast moving canyon fire torching 2,000 acres in the santa ana mountains. it continues to threaten homes there. flames lighting up a mountain ridge. we saw that earlier as people were driving dangerously close to the thread. as you can see, there were firefighters on the ground and helicopters dropping buckets of water on the flames overnight into the morning. checking temperatures, they've cooled off with rising humidity. firefighters think they have a good shot at getting control of some of this fire. eun? >> angie, thank you.

we want the gym somewhere to get healthy and get your exercise in and not get sick. doctors say there are a lot of things to watch out for. germs are almost everywhere at the gym and they travel through sweat. yuck. here's what you can do. make sure you shower after you workout. change the towels as often as you can and most importantly, use the wipes. the worst way to catch something is if someone else's sweat is there. this is not good breakfast material. in addition to cleaning equipment, though, clean your gym bags. throw all the gym clothes and dirty shoes in the bag and you don't clean thatment clean that, too. give everything an anti-bacterial wipe-down. spray them down with lysol and everything. it is gross. the reason why we tell you is because it's flu season. we want to keep you healthy. take those precautions. i know what you're going to say. >> we worry about every little thing. >> you don't want to get sick. >> yes, wipe things down. be

ticonderoga, where we get over 100 pounds of honey a year >> that's fantastic. tell us about the process. we have samples of the jarred honey on the table. what are we looking at right here? >> the honey will be harvested from the super frames inside the beehive here. >> this is a real behave? >> this is a real behave. it's typically what's used by modern-day farmers. it has the super frames inside which the honeycomb comes on. you scrape it off into a glass bowl and then it can be jarred and processed, ready to sell. we have regular honey and then we sell honey with the comb. has medicinal properties with the cone. a lot of people enjoy having the cone. >> it's right inside there. >> i know you do educational lessons for the public to learn about honey and the bees add all of that and the benefits. tell me the reaction from the public to learning about this? >> a lot of people don't realize that 80% of our food is

beyond that point. suffice it to say, don't bother with the bw parkway today. brad freitas is live on the scene with more. >> dave, you hit the nail on the head. 295 not where you want to be this morning. let's start off north of 197. this is the southbound lanes on the right side. we have a multivehicle crash there that police are on the scene still. southbound, we've got one vehicle disabled just at the exit for 197. that was a two-vehicle crash that the police and the ems moved on from. after 197, we had a four-vehicle crash all moved over to the right shoulder. those vehicles have been removed. remember, this was the southbound spot where the serious accident was before 2:30. on the northbound side after 197, we had a crash involving two weeks that was moved over quickly to the shoulder. the delays are

6:30 now. a busy morning around here. we've been following developments on a bad crash on the bw parkway since we went on the air at 4:00 this morning. >> chopper 4 has been all over the scene and now we have the up to the minute details. wtop's dave dildine has the up to the minute information on what's going on. dave? >> yeah, guys. it's actually gone from bad to worse in the northbound direction of the baltimore washington parkway. northbound traffic is now stopped north of the beltway and just north of greenbelt road. starting with chopper 4. the southbound, the major crash was cleared, the diversion lifted at 197. in the backup, two secondary crashes. one on the right shoulder. there were two secondary wrecks on the northbound side. now there's a more serious crash closer to the beltway in the backup. all the northbound traffic has been brought to a stop. out of this picture, north of 193.

investigating. this morning, there's a $10,000 reward for information leading to a missing virginia beach college student. 19-year-old ashanti billie has been missing for more than a week. she was last seen in little creek norfolk last monday. her car and cell phone were found over the weekend. 6:34 now. angie goff is at the live desk with a new report on the virginia governor's race. angie? >> that's right. we just broke it down. the new numbers in the governor's race that could show problems for both candidates at this point. we want to start with republican candidate ed gillespie. he may be taking a hit, they said, because of the president's low popularity in the state of virginia. 96% of northam supporters will -- as for north a&m, on the issue of monuments, 54% of

first responders trying to remove the car out of woods there. it happened on the bw parkway near 197 in laurel. news 4's justin finch is live with more on how traffic is finally moving now that the lanes are back open. so are you seeing progress there, justin? >> reporter: good morning. we are seeing progress out here. we're off of powder mill road. that's the parkway here. the top of the hour. traffic began to move on the southbound bw parkway lanes. soon realized that those lanes have been reopened to traffic after that single vehicle wreck left one person requiring helicoptering to the hospital this morning. park police telling us that vehicle appears to have crashed into a tree. the reason at this point being investigated. but the response led to closures on the southbound bw parkway lanes. the closures between route 197 and powder mill

wednesday, a cold front approaches, pushes that out to sea. the cooler air moves in. look what's going to happen to our temperatures. normal high 76. today will be in the mid-80s. tomorrow near 90. thursday, we start to see that transition happening, highs in the low 80s. friday, we drop below normal. actually in the mid-70s. into the weekend, even a little bit cooler. look at that. saturday and sunday really feeling like fall around here. look at these morning temperatures in the 50s. afternoon highs in the low 70s. we stay nice and dry. a perfect fall-like weekend. we have had a rough morning on the baltimore washington parkway. breaking traffic news on the northbound side of the parkway. they had to stop all traffic beyond greenbelt road at another serious crash. police are still in the process of setting up there. the left lane is getting by. but
