at the live desk, chris lawrence, news 4. >> all right, chris. at least one person is dead after an awful crash in springfield. >> this video is just in to our newsroom. a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer collided near the intersection of back lick road and fuller ton road. we are still working right now to find out how it happened and who was killed. . >> two weeks after a deadly house fire, news 4 was on the scene as explosives teams returned to search the home. we have also learned that tunnels have been found on the property. news 4's chris gordon live outside the house on danbury road in bethesda with more.

are spending time in the yard. are they digging? >> reporter: they're focused on the yard. they are collecting evidence. there are two large dumpsters outside of this chain link fence and police tape still up. they are taking this very seriously. they returned here this afternoon. they've been here every day. we are told it is a bunker-like situation in the basement with a tunnel with bedding, chemicals and gasoline being stored. these are making for challenging conditions for the investigators who are coming here every day trying to determine the cause of this fatal fire. >> this has been an incredibly complicated fire scene for our investigators. >> reporter: investigators are finding underground tunnels dug around the house. a piece of heavy earth moving equipment sits in the backyard. investigators are collecting and testing chemicals that are stored here. they are finding electrical wiring and hoarding

all kinds of materials. fire fighters with chain saws are cutting trees and bamboo to clear the backyard, looking for clues. but more than two weeks after the fatal fire that killed a man trapped in the basement of this bethesda home, investigators are still seeking answers. >> they think they have narrowed down the area of origin, tried to identify what in that area could have ignited the fire. >> reporter: the resident of the home got out and yelled for help. he suffered injuries and was treated at a local hospital and released. the flames were too intense to get to the man who died inside the house. police investigating the death say they need the results of the autopsy. >> we are waiting on results from the medical examiner regard to cause of death and other information as well. >> reporter: now, behind me you see a montgomery county police cruiser with an officer inside. there has been a

here every day since september tenth because if criminal charges result from this fatal fire, they want to make sure they have preserved the scene. that's the latest. live in bethesda, pat back to you. >> thank you, chris gordon. thank you, chris. president trump says puerto rico is in deep trouble and needs help after hurricane maria. those comments on twitter came as the president announced he's going to make a trip to the territory next tuesday. the president says he can't go any earlier because it would disrupt recovery operations. today he also said that he may visit the u.s. virgin islands hit hard by maria and irma. puerto ri puerto ricans are struggling to find supplies. most stores are still closed because there is no power. puerto rico's governor says some ports are beginning to reopen. that will get much needed aid to the island. >>t

still a monster. churning off in the atlantic just off the carolina coast, the question is is that going to impact us in any way? amelia draper in the storm center with a word on that. amelia. >> well, leon, any clouds we saw today were from maria. still a category 1 hurricane but i suspect in the 5:00 update issued by the national hurricane center the storm will be downgraded to a tropical storm, no longer hurricane. take a look. i'm showing you our local radar. just so you know it's completely dry in our area. but notice when i add on the clouds with the satellite, you can see there's maria. pretty hard to miss. bringing some clouds into the area. right now especially east of 95, areas of southern maryland, over to the beaches, seeing some clouds. even some rain down around the norfolk area and around the outer banks. all of that is due to maria. here's the latest track. max winds at 75 miles an hour, it's still moving really slowly to the north at 7 miles an hour. you can see it is during the day tomorrow that it is going to start to make that nice easy

park. 84 in reston. a nice summer like evening out there. when i talk about the humidity, we measure the humid with the dewpoint temperatures. dewpoint around 65. we start to say it is a little humid out there. when we get close to 70 that's when it's muggy. 75 would be tropical-like moisture. we're definitely noticing that humidity and kind of unusual for late september. not out of the question, but just not an everyday occurrence. take a look at your planner tomorrow. very similar to today as far as temperatures are concerned. but we'll have plenty of sunshine from start to finish. just some clouds around tomorrow morning from maria but as it pulls away from the coast, we're going to see the sunshine increasing. by lunch time we'll have 82 degrees for temperature. highs tomorrow near 90. by 7:00 still humid, 84. maybe an isolated shower tomorrow afternoon, mainly east of 95. weather having a pretty low impact on your wednesday. out the door tomorrow, it's mild and it's dry so good news there. if you want to have lunch outside it's almost too hot.

nearly everything in its path. >> we begin at 4:30 with breaking news in the effort to help the people of puerto rico. >> first responders from the district are now joining the massive relief effort in san juan. ten d.c. police officers are leaving in the morning. >> and we've just learned that eight of them are either from puerto rico or have family and friends on the island. we caught up with the chief of police about 15 minutes ago. >> as the chief of the metropolitan police department, i could not be more proud of these folks that stand behind me, willing to go to another country to help. >> these officers will be helping the state police force in puerto rico. no word on how long they'll be there. chief newsome says they are planning to bring supplies and that all the officers will have satellite phones to help them km communicate. >> right now the national guard is rushing aid to puerto rico trying to help people that have no power. they have no gas, in some cases no water

hurricane maria. >> and with every passing day there are growing concerns that thousands of people may permanently flee the island for the u.s. main land. nbc's gabe gutierrez is watching the feverish rush to help the territory. >> reporter: this morning growing signs throughout puerto rico of another crisis. already ravaged by the most powerful hurricane to hit the island in decades, it could soon face a huge migration. puerto ricans by the tens of thousands leaving what's left of their homes and coming to the u.s. main land. the governor sounding the alarm. are you expect a mass exodus of puerto ricans to the u.s. main land? >> if conditions are inhospitable, if we don't have the resources to rebuild properly, then yes. and this is going to cause a problem for puerto rico, but of course it is going to cause a problem for the main land as well. >> reporter: all over the u.s. territories, these american citizens are struggling to survive. no running water. gas is scarce and they could be without power for months. nbc's lester

with the national guard flying into san juan with desperately needed supplies. >> people talk about how bad it is, but you really don't see it until you see it. >> reporter: overnight, president trump tweeting because of its broken infrastructure and massive debt, puerto rico is in deep trouble. much of the island was destroyed with billions of dollars owed to wall street and the banks which sadly must be dealt with. of course puerto rico's ballooning debt crisis has already forced many people to leave this island. about half a million people over the last decade. but now there are concerns that the widespread devastation from hurricane maria could speed up that process. and the governor now urging the federal government to step in to help stop the bleeding. back to you. >> thank you for that, gabe gutierrez. hurricane maria still just sitting out there on the atlantic. >> amelia draper is keeping an eye on it. so, amelia, how much is it going to impact us and when does this storm dissipate? >> we are finally going to see the storm pull away from the area tomorrow morningo

been saying all along, at this point now along the outer banks. you can see all the areas here in red are under tropical storm warnings. these actually go through friday now, although i think some of them will be canceled a little bit earlier. but about 10,000 people have evacuated. parts of the outer banks. you can see this morning stretches up from around norfolk down to route surf city just north of wilmington, north carolina. the clouds you see painted in the sky right now, those are actually from maria. having a very low impact here. 85 degrees right now. by 6:00 p.m. it is still warm with temperatures in the low 80s. 83. 8:00 we're a mild 79. by 10:00 tonight 77 degrees. so as we close out our tuesday and look forward to our wednesday, what can you expect at the bus stop and what is the pollen looking like? somara theodore joins us in about 15 minutes, pat. >> we feel the pollen in our

where the devastation from hurricane maria has been described as apocalyptic. hurricane recovery is just one of the items on his agenda with north korea and the failure of health care reform also looming large. blayne alexander is tracking it all on capitol hill for us. blayne? >> reporter: well, pat, you're absolutely right. today in a wide ranging news conference, president trump talked about those relief efforts in puerto rico and north korea, but threatening to overshadow all of that his controversial comments on the nfl. today president trump said that talking about that is just as much a part of his job as anything else. president trump while holding a joint news conference with the prime minister of spain leveling a new threat against north korea when asked about possible military action. >> not a preferred option, but if we take that option, it will be devastating, i can tell you that. devastating for north korea. >> reporter: but mixed in with talk of terror a

criticism that he used his office to divide the nation over nfl players kneeling during the national anthem. >> to me the nfl situation is a very important situation. i've heard that before about was i preoccupied. not at all, not at all. i have plenty of time on my hands. all i do is work. and to be honest with you, that is an important function of work. it's called respect for our country. >> reporter: the president announcing he will visit puerto rico next tuesday. more than a week after it was ravaged by hurricane maria, pushing back on criticism that his administration is not doing enough. >> i think we've done a really good job. we are continuing to. we are literally unloading on an hourly basis water, food supplies. >> reporter: as the president spoke, republicans on capitol hill announcing they are pulling the plug on a bill that may be their last shot at repealing obamacare. >> we don't have the votes. >> reporter: earlier with house members a frustrated president trump lashing out at fellow republicans. >> we are disappointed at

new health care legislation. in recent days the so-called graham/cassidy legislation lost support among gop senators. they were trying to beat a saturday deadline to pass it with a simple majority. president trump says he will travel to puerto rico next tuesday to see the devastation himself from hurricane maria. the situation on the island is dire with dwindling amounts of gas and food and safe water. >> this young woman from prince george's county has been missing for more than a week. 19-year-old ashanti billie graduated from henry wise high school, but attends school in virginia beach. that's where she was last seen september 18. the fbi offering a $10,000 reward for any information. and a student with a gun at a local high school caused a big security scare at potomac high in oxon hill. an alert teacher spotted a former student exchanging cash with a tenth grade boy who was then found with a hand gun.

>> four years, neighbors have been waiting for new shops and redevelopment at the lan mark mall in alexandria. >> they say immediate changes are coming but it is not exactly what people expected. >> a temporary homeless shelter will soon occupy a space where the landmark macy's store now sits vacant. news 4 meagan fitzgerald takes a look at this controversial plan. >> reporter: it's been nearly a year since folks walked through the doors of what was a macy's. now the city of alexandria says this area here will be taken over by the carpenter homeless shelter while they work to renovate their current location near old town. over the last several years the landmark mall has turned into a bit of an eyesore. >> it's just been unattended to. >> from a zoning perspective -- >> reporter: former alexandria mayor kerry donlly the chair of the carpenter homeless shelter came up with an idea a few months ago. >> we have been having conversations with howard hughes for like the last six

the owner of the building about using the macy's as a temporary shelter while they renovate the current shelter near old town. >> the time line seemed to match up in terms of their redevelopment plans and our need for a temporary site for our current shelter. >> reporter: donlly says the howard hughes company needs about two years to figure out how they will transform the mall into new retail shops and residential properties. so while they figure it out, the old macy's building will soon see new tenants. donlly says neighbors can expect anywhere between 60 and 80 residents to occupy this temporary homeless shelter. he says they will likely sign the lease in the next two weeks and they can expect residents to move in by the first of the year. reporting in alexandria, meagan fitzgerald, news 4. >> we have now some breaking news coming in on that case of a missing woman we were talking about. >> wendy rieger is in our newsroom. what have you learned, wendy? >> her family made an emotional plea for her return. the fbi is offering

by now you know there is a big push in our region to woo amazon's second headquarters to the d.c. area. even metro has jumped on the amazon train. transportation adam tuss takes a look at what metro has to offer the massive online retailer. >> reporter: metro wants in on amazon. specifically the transit agency says it has plenty of land and development opportunities around stations that it absolutely could accommodate a sprawling new headquarters for amazon. potentially 50,000 new employees would work at the location. >> it's a good idea. it will bring more jobs to our
