it is on 15th street in northwest. two of the firefighters we have learned, they are in the hospital right now being treated. the d.c. fire department tweeting out this video of the two alarm fire just a few hours ago. you can see that it was a very intense scene at one point. took them about two hours to battle the flames from inside. still no word on what discussed this fire, but crews remain at the scene we know and they continue to put out the hot spots. we'll stay on top of this story. also new this morning, anger and hurt on the campus of american university. this after images of confederate flags popped up across the campus. ten of these posters with cotton branches attached to them were found at three different locations on campus yesterday. now this happened on the same night the school unveiled its plans towards anti-racism center. that center was created in response to remember that story about the

no arrests have been made in that case. now police are searching for whoever is responsible for this latest incident. at 4:02, news 4 captured this exclusive video as officers took a tenth grade boy into custody at potomac high school. they told us that that student had a gun in school yesterday morning and this all started when a teacher spotted a boy exchanging some money, some cash with another teenager who was trespassing. a school resource officer was immediately called and the school was put on lockdown. the school's principal says students need to be educated about the seriousness of guns. >> young people make bad decisions and i think we have to teach them the right way. >> while the search fortress passing teen continues, he may be a former student. this morning the family of a 19-year-old, dashonte

no one has seen the prince gorges county woman since monday, september 18th. if you can take a look at the video and share it, that would be great. she arrived at work at joint expe dairy creek in norfolk. she vanished. her cell phone all charged up showed up in a dumpster. five days later they found her car on a dead end road. despite all of this, billings mother says her gutt says her daughter is still alive. >> my mom instinct tells me she's okay. she's scared and she's hurt, but she's okay. i feel that she's okay. she's still with us, i feel that. >> billy was living in norfolk while attending school. the fbi still offering that $10,000 reward for information leading to billy's whereabouts. 4:04. nowo

rico where the situation is really becoming more desperate. hurricane maria hit a week ago as you know and still there is no running water on parts of the island. only half of the island in fact. only about 5% of the island has power, has the lights back on. puerto rico's governor saying more help is needed from the federal government. fema now says it is sending thousands more troops and a navy hospital ship to the island to help. president trump will visit puerto rico next tuesday. today ten d.c. police officers will also head to san juan to help puerto rico's state police force. this is more than just an assignment for these officers. most of them have either worked in puerto rico or they have a family connection -- they have family there. one officer said a week after maria he finally got to hear his son's voice. >> i went back to the mission. i'm happy that i was able to reach out to him and he can call me, but

million people in puerto rico, u.s. citizens actually need our help. >> d.c. police chief says the officers will bring supplies as well as satellite phones. that's the only way people can get calls out which don't need cell service to operate. meanwhile, thousands of people are trying to get off the island. relief supplies are not arriving fast enough. some people arrived in our area last night. news 4's jamari stone was there for the emotional reunions. >> as planes land at ragan national and people pick up their relatives, in baggage claim -- >> i love you guys. >> -- marie vasquez lopez. >> you know i love you. i'm from puerto rico. i love my island. >> welcomes her mother maria with a kiss. she just arrived from hurricane ravaged puerto rico with maria's

>> it's so hard. >> they waited at san juan's airport for five hours with no ac and little water. hurricane maria destroyed homes leaving the island with no electricity and a small supply of gasoline. >> there's no water. >> reporter: marie's niece camilla has bad memories of ravaged neighborhoods. >> i'm worried because there are a lot of people to help and i'm grateful that i have gotten here. >> reporter: and now they're all in good hands. >> they want to take a long shower and they want to have a nice, hot meal. >> reporter: such a nice reunion. marie tells me that her mother, nephew and niece will stay here in the d.c. area until the recovery effort is finished in puerto rico. see says the last thing she wants to do is send them back and then she's concerned, worried about their well-being. no word on how long that recovery will take. at ragan national, news 4.

any damage from hurricane irma, but the storm will still impact your budget. orange juice prices, they're going up as much as $2.30 a gallon. irma destroyed half of florida's scitrus crop. they're trying to bring oranges in from brazil. that's very, very expensive. as you know, chuck, i don't know about you, but orange juice, we go through it like this with two kids at home. it's kind of like gasoline though. you'll pay what you have to. >> it's not only good with breakfast, it's good for you. my sister has a touch of osteoporosis. they recommend a glass of orange juice. it pushed it back. >> oh, wow. >> good news. bad news about the prices. yikes. i hate it when prices go up that much. temperatures now are mostly in the 60s and 70s. it's another very warm start to the day today. 74 now here in sh

you're watching "news 4 today." well, a border wall with mexico is no longer just an idea. already eight wall prototypes are under construction in southern california. you can see the heavy machinery right there digging into the ground. this is out in san diego county. some of the walls will be concrete while others will be made from some alternate materials. they will stand between 18 and 30 feet tall. the u.s. customs and border protection says the designs might be tweaked over time. not everyone happy with president trump's decision to build the wall. it is 4:12. we all know peyton manning the football player. but how about senator

an eye on for today. a chance for a few stray showers of what is now tropical storm maria. just about 150 miles or so off the cape hatteras coast of north carolina. breezy conditions for tomorrow. since it's hump day, the most important thing is the weekend. we have not had to update the numbers on the forecast. cool to crisp and chilly saturday and sunday morning and saturday and sunday afternoon both still look dry for all of your outdoor plans. there's maria at this point. you can get a sense, there's a little bit of moisture on the far northwest corner of it. that is what the computer models are picking up on. skies partly to mostly cloudy across the area. clouds thicker from i-95 east to the bay and south to southern maryland. look what's happening in future weather, 3:00 in the afternoon. every model i've looked at has hinted some little chance for some showers. one band is far north

landmark mall in alexandria, and the city keeps saying it's coming, but in the meantime there's a controversial plan now to utilize that empty space as a temporary homeless shelter. news 4's megan fitzgerald explains. >> reporter: the one iconic landmark mall has turned into a bit of an eye sore. now only one store remains and people are hoping for a change. >> retail residential sounds like a nice idea for revitalization. >> reporter: many say they never expected a temporary homeless shelter to occupy this. >> it seems odd but at the same time there's a need. here's an opportunity. >> reporter: for years the plan has been to redevelop the old mall but the owners say it will take them about two years to figure it out. >> the time line seemed to match up in terms of their redevelopment plans and our need for a temporary site

current shelter. >> reporter: former alexandria mayor, kerry donnelly, said it will take two years to renovate their current location so he called it an ideal situation but some neighbors disagree. >> i don't know. i just don't think this is a very good idea. >> reporter: donnelly says neighbors can expect anywhere between 60 and 80 residents to occupy the temporary homeless shelter. they will likely sign the lease in the next two weeks. they can expect residents to move in by the first of the year. reporting in alexandria, news 4. and it's 4:26.
